After the nice and easy start to the weekend on Friday, our weekend really took off on Saturday! Both kids had their own activities at the same time. We got up and promptly set off in two separate directions. Peyton’s gymnastics and Brandon’s game were both at 930am. After gymnastics, Peyton and I headed over to watch the tail end of the game. From there, we went to the snack shack, then went on home. We were planning on going to the pizza party for the screen-free week, but we had to wait for an hour. Instead, we fed the kids home food, and then had them go down for a nap. The wedding didn’t start until 4pm, but it was a ways away, so we wanted to head out early. Both kids took baths early, then headed off to nap. While the kids were napping, I showered, and then got mostly ready. Since it was too early to change, I decided to take a nap myself. I didn’t get up until a little before 2pm! At this time, the kids were up, and we quickly got them and ourselves changed and headed out the door. We ran into some traffic over the hill, but we had still allowed for plenty of time to arrive. Peyton was fussing with her shoes, telling me they hurt. I asked her where does it hurt, and she told me, “On the heel.” I didn’t think it was that bad, then she continued, “And on the toe, in the front.” Oh, so that’s not good. She was wearing them without socks, so I’m sure that didn’t help either. So I asked her, “Peyton, you don’t want to be a slave to fashion?” They were cute little shoes with a bow in the front that I’d gotten just to match the dress that she picked out. She immediately answered, “NO!” She totally answered appropriately, although I know she has no idea what I’d asked her. I asked her to just wear the shoes inside, then we could take them off later. She agreed to it.
It was chilly there, so luckily, we’d planned accordingly, and had our jackets and sweaters. The hotel had thick stadium blankets as well, so we hijacked one for our laps. Peyton didn’t want to use it, but she did prefer to sit on my lap. I told her the condition of sitting on my lap was to let me use the blanket for my legs. She agreed, and helped keep it on both of our legs. We were on the aisle so Dave could take pictures. I’d packed tons of snacks in my bag, including water and the ipad in case. The kids didn’t even ask, and were content to look around. Once the wedding started, both were interested, especially Peyton who was on the look out for the princess. Greg and the groomsmen came walking down the hill, while the bridesmaids came down the center aisle. The ceremony was short and sweet; perfect for a wedding with a lot of kids there! We hung around for pictures, as family was requested to stay close, while everyone else was invited to the cocktail hour. Dave wanted to disown the family and go eat, but he dutifully hung around. I’d broken out the crackers for the kids, and Dave, who was starving. Since they were passing around alcohol, I thought I’d start in with some crackers, too. Peyton started in on her green beans, and shared a few with Brandon. The adults were amazed that the kids were willingly eating veggies. My aunt asked me how we get to them to eat them. I told them they were offered them from the start, and they don’t know any different. And they’re weird kids 🙂 We knew the standard kids’ meal is chicken tenders and fries, so we made sure they had their veggies beforehand.
Once the hors d’oeuvres started coming around, we started giving those to the kids. We did manage to try each of the appetizers and then some. They were all very yummy, and Brandon loved the spinach puff. Peyton was more picky, and only ate some of the components (usually the bread or carb) of each. It was finally our turn for pictures, so we got in there with the family. Hopefully the kids didn’t have evidence of the food on their faces. We headed inside to wait to be let into the ballroom. Once seated, it was nice and warm, so Peyton and I could take our jacket and sweaters off. They brought out the kids’ meals first, with fruit being their starter. Both kids, who were sitting together between us, started right in and devoured the bowl. We got our soup to start, and Brandon enjoyed some of Dave’s, while Peyton didn’t want to try any. Our beet salad came next, with the kids’ chicken and mac and cheese, following shortly thereafter. When the waiter put the food in front of Peyton, he asked her to share with him. She gave him her disinterested glare, and my cousins were cracking up at her expression. We were all laughing, and then suddenly, I saw her face was down, and she was teary eyed, asking me to fix her shoes (trying to distract me away from what had happened, and trying to keep her tears in check with a diversion). She was wiping away her tears quickly, but they still streamed down her face. I then realized we’d embarrassed her, and I whispered to my cousin about what had happened. She said her own son was very similar, so she totally got it and passed the word on to her husband. Peyton calmed down, and was able to eat, though only ate the fries and mac and cheese. My cousin’s kids, who are 17 and 19, were eyeing the kids’ meals. I separated the chicken and most of Peyton’s fries, knowing she wouldn’t eat it all. I waited a little bit to make sure I was right (I was), then offered it to them. They politely declined, and then saw once Peyton wasn’t going to eat it and it was just going to go to waste, they quickly accepted. They polished it off in an instant! I think they’d have preferred what the little kids got compared to what was served to the grown-ups. Next was our trio of duck, crab cake, and spring roll. After the kids were done eating, my cousins took turns taking them to the kids’ art table that was set up. That gave us time to enjoy the surf and turf of filet and seabass. I was getting full by this point, and had been watching the chocolate fountain being set up. Subconsciously (or not), I was holding off on the bread and starches, and waiting for the dessert. It did not disappoint, as the fountain was being manned to prevent the kids from getting into it. They had Madeline cookies, graham crackers, marshmallows, fruit, cream puffs, and pound cake all for dipping. The kids were so involved with making masks and using the styrofoam stickers, they declined the chocolate fountain! WHAT? Dave had pre-dipped some graham crackers and gave some to each. He’d gotten some on Peyton’s face, then laughed about it, sending her into tears again. It was about 9pm, so both kids were delirious, and in tears without much provocation. She agreed to stay with Briana, who was very sweet and made her feel better. Bri was also not wearing shoes, so she and Peyton were matching. Finally, they all came back, and saw their melted ice cream kiddie dessert along with the “adult” dessert, also a trio, made up of creme brulee, an espresso mousse slice, and a peach cobbler. I asked them if they wanted half the cobbler or the whole creme brulee. Both kids chose the brulee. There was also the wedding cake, and the ice cream bar! They had frozen sorbets on a stick, which were then dipped into melted chocolate and then finished off with toppings. The desserts were over the top! We danced for a few seconds while waiting to take a picture with the bride and groom, then made our way around to say our goodbyes. It was after 10pm, and both kids were still up, but Brandon was asking to go home. We took them to the potty to go and brushed their teeth, knowing they wouldn’t make it home to do so. We each took a kid, and went to our respective bathrooms. We made it home by 1130pm, and put both kids to bed. I slept with Brandon to make sure he slept in longer. I’d previously made the agreement with Brandon that I’d sleep with him only if he did not get up before 8am. He agreed. Too bad it was Peyton that woke up first and came over. I sent her back, and reminded Brandon of the agreement. He laid back down, not really putting up much of a fight, and then watched the clock until 8am. As soon as it was 8:00, he shot up and declared, “It’s 8 o’clock!” Since he’d been patient, I got up and started to get ready for our Mother’s Day brunch at my parents. My mom had been inviting everyone and their mother (truly) to the house after the wedding. She hadn’t kept track of how many she was inviting, but she did plan for an army. We stopped along the way for some pastries, and then headed up in time to help out. The kids were starving, but we’d told them we were planning on brunch, so they agreed to wait. They were one of the first to eat, since I knew their behavior would go downhill if we didn’t feed them soon. It was about 1030am by this time, so it was appropriate. They ate almost everything we gave them, except they both didn’t eat the frittata my mom made. Chase and Keira came over, and Peyton loved playing with them. We warned Brandon that they’d have to take a nap around noon, and that afterward, he could wake up and watch the Chipmunks movie my mom brought home. Brandon remembered it was the movie we went to see on his birthday. We delayed naptime a bit, as people were just starting to leave at that time. At 1215pm, Brandon headed downstairs and said, “I’m going to take a nap now.” I looked at Dave in disbelief, but he just shrugged his shoulders. As people were leaving, I called Brandon upstairs to come say goodbye. He came up, said his goodbyes, then headed down. After my dad’s side of the family all left, my mom’s side of the family stayed for MJ. 🙂 That’s just what we do. Brandon was in the room next to us, with the door closed, and he curled up and went to sleep right away. Peyton agreed to stay in my parents’ room, but only on the floor. I think she thought the bed was too high. I made a wall of pillows so she wouldn’t hit the walls or bed, and she laid right down. My mom told her if she went to sleep, she’d give her some HK underwear she’d gotten for her. The bribe, just like that for Brandon, worked like a charm. I think she wouldn’t have fought even if she didn’t bribe her, since she was tired, too. Brandon slept for over an hour, while Peyton slept for over two. I went to check on her after we were done, and my mom had already found her. She was in the bathroom, and crying, because she’d had an accident. She didn’t make it, and didn’t know what to do. We cleaned her up, got her new pants (she managed to keep her dress dry, just her pants since she was upright). I calmed her down, and then she was good. We headed home just after 5pm something, and then went back to the grocery store where we’d gotten the pastries this morning. Dave wanted to get some accompaniments for the rest of his pulled pork, and Peyton said, “Hey, this was where we were already.” I thought it was funny that she’d made that connection. We got our things, and came home to feed them a quick dinner and then off to bed. Hopefully they will both get rest for the school week. We’re restocking and trying also to get ourselves ready for the week. We’re traveling for another wedding next Saturday, so it’ll be a long one for us!
