Today, I got a text from Dave: “Should I respond to Jeff or will you?”
I wasn’t sure if he was talking about Jeff, our BIL, or Jeff, the softball player agent. But something told me it was softball related. I told him I didn’t know what he was talking about, so he checked his email again to realize that it was only sent to him.
The draft is Wednesday, so I didn’t think we’d hear anything until then.

So Dave forwarded me the email, “After the evaluations, the coaches confirmed that Peyton is capable of playing up to 3A.

I just want to double check with you that you would still like her to.

Dave did respond and now she’s in!

We’ll have to make sure she practices extra hard to prove to the coaches that she deserves to be there.
Go, Peyton!

First girls tourney

The girls broke away from the boys to play their own games today. The first game was at 9 close to my hometown. I wanted to make sure we were there early. Brandon wanted to make sure he got up early. So that he didn’t get left behind. He was up at 615. He clearly got up in enough time. Peyton woke up just fifteen minutes later and came in. We got moving and got up to the gym as set up was happening. That meant the girls got more time to shoot. H’s older sister F slept in at home while their mom told me G wanted to come along for the food. And to shoot around with B, which they did. The first game was relatively high scoring game with Peyton getting a handful of steals (Dave thinks 7-8). Toward the end, she was told to pass it and no longer shoot. She got the ball to the two that don’t hit rim, but she was still able to pass it. I think G was keeping score, and it was 16-12, Peyton’s team.
There were two games running simultaneously, and there was a whistle blown on the other court. Our kids stopped, then as they realized it wasn’t their whistle, this happened:

The girls passed really well, enough to have their 70 year old coach say, “The girls’ passing is INSANE!”

After the game, we said goodbye to H’s family who went home. The older two girls had games in two different locations. We went to my mom’s to get her back to the school. We brought her back to watch the boys’ game. They didn’t fare as well against their team. Then, we had another game to watch, so we stayed to watch our friend’s game, and then it was Peyton’s turn again. They were playing on the larger court, in the main gym area against a team from SF. They were a 2nd/3rd grade team, and much bigger. H’s dad thought it was going to be a tough match up, and he wasn’t wrong. The kids were much taller. And the score was very low. The first two minutes were played with a larger, heavier ball, and Peyton missed a few. She couldn’t even hit the rim with the ball! H’s dad noticed and walked over to the coach to question it. The ref checked the ball and sure enough it was too large. After switching out the ball, the girls were doing much better. Baskets were still harder to come by, but they were getting them up higher. Peyton has 3 soccer teammates, and they all had no problem running up and down the larger court. Peyton was getting visibly tired, with the longer distance to travel. She let one girl pass her up and take one to the basket. Fortunately, that was one of two scored by the opposing team. Peyton was not shut down by the coaches this time, and she scored 3 baskets, but also spread it out among her teammates. One of her teammates, so very sweet, told her mom she doesn’t want to play. She is super sweet, but doesn’t have a lot of understanding for the game. At one point, Peyton had to back up so the girl didn’t block her shot as she was shooting. Fortunately, it went in. They ended up beating the team 12 to 4, but it was a hard-fought game!

We stayed again to watch the boys’ team, which was just after ours. I was secretly hoping that Peyton would be called up to help them. Both teams had only 7 kids today, and with each team having 1-2 kids that cannot hit rim (I think Peyton has 3 out of 7 who cannot), it puts a lot of pressure on the others to get open and shoot. Dave refers to P and H as “thunder and lightning”. H is a soccer player, and definitely has speed on her side. Peyton can create shots and make swift passes to her teammates, almost too hard at times.

Rebounds and the pass!

She didn’t like this video as it didn’t end with a score…but I like the toughness and aggressive play from these girls!
Throughout the whole tourney ,the thing that put a smile on my face more than anything was 1) hearing Brandon cheer from the sidelines, and 2) having him tell her “Great job on the steals!”

Injury to injury

Peyton had a rough week of injuries, and it was only a four day week for her!   She told me Tuesday that she had to go to the office because she tripped on her rolling backpack.  She had a massive bruise on her hip.  Then, I was getting her a snack from the cabinet and she quickly ran to get something in her backpack.  She ran across the kitchen and into the cabinet that was open. She ran against the open cabinet, hitting her head so hard! I was flabbergasted, but she kept going.  She didn’t say anything, but when I went over to show my sympathy, she started crying.  I iced it and gave her hugs and kisses.

Finally, during her game, she fell and landed on the same area of her hip.  I couldn’t tell if she was crying, but she got up.  And then started wiping her face repeatedly. She stayed in the game, fighting through tears.  She lasted until the coach called timeout a few minutes later.  I couldn’t watch her because I didn’t want her to fall apart.  She hung in there and showed grit!

But when it comes to picking an ice cream mochi flavor, forget it! We all selected our flavors, and I was about to pay. But Peyton hadn’t picked one yet. The cashier waited patiently for her.  Finally, after what seemed like several minutes, she finally came up with “salted caramel”.  Dave asked her this morning what took her so long last night. She said, “I like to choose slowly.”  Yup. That’s about right.

Sports day

This morning, Peyton had her first pitching lesson with a coach who was driving up from Fresno. She came recommended by a dad who we know whose daughter is a year older than Brandon. She was running late, but we arrived early enough to get some warm ups in. Last night, we’d already taken both kids out to work on their fielding. I had to hit balls to Brandon since Dave was the recipient at first base. Surprisingly, I was able to hit all 10 balls requested of me to Brandon, who was at short stop. peyton worked on her pop flies, then headed to an hour of basketball practice. B and G got to play, and though G says she’s not good at basketball, she shot a few in Brandon’s face!

The coach arrived just after 830 am, and she had a chance to meet Peyton. She liked that she was already warmed up. They got to know each other a bit, then they started with some drills. She told us Peyton was “coachable” and made adjustments as requested. She didn’t waste our time! It ended promptly at 930 am, giving us just enough time to get to the park and sign her in for evaluations. Well, it was evaluations for the other kids who are old enough, but for Peyton, it was really a try out. She has to make it in the top half of the draft before she will be allowed to play with the “big” kids. She has more kids she knows and will play with at this level than the lower level, and we think she’ll do better skill-wise to play with the older kids. The draft will be on Wednesday, so we’ll see how she fares.

She started off by meeting the KP MD coach that I’d been in contact with to get the low down. He went up to her to say hi, then I came up with her number. I let him know that I was the one who had been in contact with him, and introduced him to Peyton. He told me he figured out who she was already. She was the tiniest one out there.

I really wanted her to catch her pop flies as our friend was saying this was an important dividing line between the top and bottom, and she did, 2 out of 2! I missed the first one, because I was chatting with the moms. I had to text Dave, who asked me, “Why weren’t you watching?!” I had to text Dave to remind Peyton to wear her mask. He told me to go down and tell her, since not many other girls were wearing them. I drew out on the drawing pad “WEAR YOUR MASK” and it animated. Apparently, she got the message, as she was wearing it. On the second throw back to second after catching the pop fly at short, one of the coaches watching shouted, “WOW!”

She bobbled a hit to second, but then picked up the second ball. She fielded two cleanly at short stop, and made the throw to first. This was another metric that our friend encouraged us to make sure she could do, as this separates the top from the bottom in 10u. They were allowed 5 balls off the pitching machine. She hit the first ball up the middle, then she fouled off three and totally missed one. Some girls missed all of them, so she had contact at least.

She wrapped up pitching some.

She definitely wasn’t the best, but she wasn’t terrible either. Hopefully she gets picked up as a work in progress.

After her try outs, we had to rush Brandon to his evaluations. His is truly evaluations, since he’s age-appropriate for his division. Dave had to drop by home to pick up Brandon’s shoes, and I stayed back to feed Peyton. Then, we headed to get our cookies for the year. But, I hadn’t accounted that we were so late from Peyton’s try outs, that we were going to be late for her game. So, Dave, who had forgotten Brandon’s basketball clothes (his coach from basketball was going to be to baseball and take him to the basketball game), came to get Peyton from me. I loaded 20+ cases into my car, then dropped them off at home, to then go back to Peyton’s game. Brandon’s basketball game was at 3 pm, so Dave had to leave Peyton’s game early. I could tell he didn’t want to leave, since he kept lingering. It was confirmed from Peyton, who told me “Daddy said he didn’t want to leave, and he wanted to watch the game!” It was close, and we were playing his ex-coworker’s daughter. Peyton had half-dozen steals, just as she had last night at their practice scrimmage. She also had about 10 rebounds. She also got a “prize” / goodie for boxing out, something only two of them were doing today. She was moving some girl all around the floor with her subtle hip checks while on defense.

As I was leaving, I ran into the dad who recommended the pitching coach to tell him all about the evals and the pitching lesson. He was happy to hear about her performance, though I realize it may not be quite objective. He wanted his friend (the KP MD) to pick Peyton up. I told him that I’d prefer that over another coach we knew from last summer who Dave didn’t like as he yelled at the kids and was very negative. We rushed over to the last 3/4 of Brandon’s game. He had done well in the first half, Dave said, scoring 3 baskets. The team was tied when we arrived, then there was a run on the score, as the team went up by double digits. Dave thinks Brandon has really improved, having a few steals and playing aggressive defense. That’s one thing neither kid has a problem with, aggressive play! After his game, the other baseball parents told us that they didn’t finish up evaluations. So, back to the school we went. Brandon had not yet hit, so he took some swings off the pitching machine.

He also did some pitching, and then it was time to go.

Fortunately for him, he was the only left handed pitcher. He was very slow but he threw strikes. Actually, he hasn’t thrown a pitch in over 6 months or more, so all things considered, he did fairly well with that. So, we brought home two tired kids to practice piano 🙂 I had made a deal with them that we wouldn’t have to do it first thing in the morning, and they were happy at the time. But, we did squeeze it in before a dinner out, and some mochi dessert before bringing home our tired kids for sleep.

Peyton has a tournament tomorrow, back in my hometown area. She’ll play in two games, with the girls’ team. There are 7 of them, and only 5 of them can hit the rim consistently. And only 2-3 of them can actually get it IN the rim. She’ll get to play with H, versus just scrimmaging against her or playing on the alternating team for their other team. Thunder and lightning (what Dave calls them) will be in full effect tomorrow.

Directions

I was resting my hand under my chin while Peyton was reading. She saw me and chided me for not doing the right thing.  She said I should be doing “this” and showed me the proper technique to keep my jaw open and properly aligned to avoid the TMJ issues I’ve been having. I couldn’t remember if I’d talked to her but I know she wasn’t at l appointment. Then I realized it was because she had read my after visit summary.

Dave thinks she’ll do well.  I thought she’d rock the Cty test and didn’t. Hopefully she’s more of a jock than a brain in this case.

Day “off”

The kids had a staff development day at school, so I took the opportunity to have them be productive at home with Dave. He took them to breakfast to tank them up before their aptitude test. I’d signed them up to see how they did on a test for possible summer programs available. Dave showed up early to their 11 am time frame, and they were taken early. I texted right before 11 am, and he told me they had already gone in and come out for their first break! It was a 22 minute section, and they were out in 10-12 minutes. B came out first, then Peyton followed thereafter. They took a short break, and then went back in there. They were done in less than the allotted one hour. They went to lunch down there, then headed to the batting cages. They went to two cages, since they had tokens to burn. Peyton was hitting in a 40 mph cage, which she only fouled off 2 balls last year. She told me that she hit at least 10 balls! Dave said it was even more than that. And some of the balls were too high for her to hit in any case.

This was the first set of balls, that were a bit too high for her. She had a few that were solid contact.

Basketball and Birthday

This morning, we had basketball pictures for both kids, just a few minutes apart. Then, Brandon had his game. It was a hard-fought game against a rather dirty team with some kids that were hacking away. Brandon started to get aggressive and took charge with the ball. He made a fade away shot that went right into the basket. But they still lost in double digits. We came home to eat and practice piano for Peyton, then she was sent to take a nap. We hung out until Peyton’s game. Since we ran a little late to the pictures and Dave had to be texted by Ryan, we showed up to the game super early. Dave had our two kids running dribbling drills outside in the hallway. Slowly other teammates showed up. This was a much-anticipated game, as the match up was against the other CC team. It was a close one, and according to one mom keeping score, it was 22 to 18 us. According to the other coach, it was tied. Peyton had been hacked a few times, and came up holding her left arm. She looked like she was going to cry, but kept it together. I was worried for piano! The parents were getting mad because the other coach was telling his players to hold up our team and playing illegal defense by holding the players’ arms. The ref wasn’t calling any fouls. We went home and quickly got the cake, then headed to the bowling alley. We were a bit early, so they weren’t even ready for us. We did get in after the league play was done. We got the kids set up, and then they started bowling. The big siblings were all on the same lane together. The other kids spread out on the two lanes, with Nina joining in on the third lane when she arrived.
Peyton introduced the friends who didn’t know each other. She was reluctant, but she did go ahead to do it. Soon, when the kids were all settled, they bowled with the bumpers up.

The kids had a great time, with a break from bowling to eat pizza and have cake. The bowling ended right at 7 pm, and Peyton passed out her goodie bags that she’d worked on. We got help from F, G, and H to take Peyton’s presents out. The bowling alley staff cleaned up the table, and we took the bowling pin that all the kids signed home. Here are the pictures from Peyton’s 8th birthday! Everyone loved the cake which we’d picked up yesterday evening from downtown SJ, amidst protesters marching the streets. It was well worth it for the oreo chocolate cake.

First jamboree

Peyton had her game yesterday, and she and Hope were told not to shoot anymore. Peyton would pass to a girl and that girl would pass right back. Peyton would take a look at the basket then remember her missive and pass again. There were two kids they were supposed to pass to.  One mom didn’t get it, and she yelled to Peyton to shoot the ball since she was right in front of it.  Today, she got her chance.  She was starting five in the first game.  She saw the row of chairs across the gym and asked if her team would be sitting in those.  I was worried she didn’t want to sit so far from us.  She asked, “So we can sit in them like Brandon’s team does for Coop Hopps? And how his team sits for sybl?”  Yes. I asked her what she sits on in SYBL.  She told me, “The ground.”  So she wasn’t concerned about the chairs and sitting so far away.  She was happy to sit on chairs and wait her turn!  She even mentioned one was not padded but the rest were.

The game started, but she played timidly. Maybe I’d told her not to foul so she kept her hands down. Or she was nervous. Or both.  She came back with more aggression in the second half. She ended up scoring one basket.

The second game, they were playing an even harder team. We’d seen them play the game before ours. Peyton groaned at the thought. Dave left us to take Brandon to his game. We had to hang around the gym for over an hour and sat through two games.  She was bored but hung in there. We were invited to lunch, but we didn’t have a car.  Peyton didn’t want to walk the mile or so so we stayed.  When the two of her teammates came back, she was excited to see them. To the point she waved to them and went up to them and said, “hi!”   Three of them went up to the top of the stands to watch the game. I was hoping she’d be safe and not fall off the top.  The three of them were just chatting amongst themselves. One kid noticed her shoes were LBJ’s and peyton told him what her nickname was for him: Jabron Lames.  He laughed at that.  They stayed up there then came down to watch the game with the adults.  Soon, more kids showed up, and they had more interaction.  They are really bonding.  When the second game started, the kids did better than expected. Peyton was the starting five again  and got to tip off. Peyton scored two baskets and made a free throw! The total number of points was 12.  All of her practice has paid off!  In the end, both games were blowouts but all things considered, the kids have come a long way since they met each other back in October. Most of the time, Peyton played point guard, but sometimes she’d inbounds and then brush past the point guard and whisper something. Later, I asked her if she told them to pass to her.  She said, “Yeah.”  And two times, they did and she had an open lane.  She managed to get open.  Ryan would also tell her to just take the shot.  She got many rebounds. Brandon even helped cheer Peyton’s team on. It was great to see.

Schedules

Monday, I woke up and got ready.  I was downstairs by 7, but it was super dark.  The kids had stayed up late, so it was expected that they’d not get up too early. I was getting my lunch together when I heard, “Ehem.”  I turned around and Peyton was at the stairs. She asked, “It’s Monday.  Why are you up so early? You only get up on Tuesdays and Thursdays early. It’s Monday.”  I told her it was seven already, and I had to get to work because it was raining so I needed to go in earlier. I put my stuff away and turned around. She was still sitting on the stairs.  Waiting.  I walked up to her and picked her up.  Yes, I can still carry her. I dropped her off on my bed and then reminded her to behave since I knew she would be tired. She nodded in agreement. I told her she could sleep early tonight and she agreed to that, too.

Brandon was then up at that time and was being grumpy so I just left.
