Ice cream reward (aka bribe)

For every one hundred days of consecutive piano practice (of days eligible when we’re home), Peyton receives a gift card to ice cream from her teacher. This is just enough to motivate her to make it a priority in the day. The genius move has engrained the act of practice into her.

She’s receive two cards now but we haven’t had the time or inclination on my part to go.  Until this week. I told her about the 31st of each month and what a deal she’d get. And how much further her money would go.  Teaching delayed gratification and economics all in one lesson.

We drove there after I dropped Brandon off after he did band helper for school.  Brandon had practice so it was just the two of us.  We were parking and Peyton spotted a boy she knows in the store.  This kid is a huge trouble maker but when Peyton talks to him, he gets super shy and will put his head down sheepishly.  He did it again today, as Peyton made her way to the front of the line to say hi.  She also saw her softball teammate and current classmate who were all there together.   Peyton had ice cream and friends! What more could she ask for!

From her friend’s mom:

Memorial day

Earlier in the week, I asked dave if he wanted to go pick cherries or have G’s family over for lunch/dinner.  He didn’t want to drive the distance to cherries so he texted Ryan immediately and got a response right away.  So we planned for lunch since the next day was school and work.  They came over just after 1130 am (they are notoriously prompt) and when they say a time, they mean it.

We had games ready to go as they had as well.  All the kids went to the backyard where Brandon had his nerf guns at the ready.  Dave was preparing burgers, home cut fries and salad along with green beans.  I’d gotten the cheese and crackers ready to go on my slate serving tray. We’d gotten two more video game controllers increasing the number of players from two at a time to four.  But we factored in five kids.  But they would rotate in.  That all worked well, but when Ryan saw it was Mario kart, and heard Peyton was the Tsao champ, he had to inform us all he was the Mario Kart champ of the late 90’s.  Peyton best him and the other two opponents their first race out.  It was an intense battle with all four contestants standing or hovering closely to the tv prompting dave to suggest we needed a bigger tv.

Tricia knows what a competitive bunch we all are and Peyton had been warned about losing with dignity.  She had to be reminded of this several times.  But for the most part, fun was had by all.  We ate the apple and chocolate pie that they brought over.

Luckily we had air hockey to keep two people occupied and there was a tournament style battle royals that Peyton did win with just the kids.

We chatted and hung out watching the kid antics until after four when F left to go to boba with a friend.  H was sad she couldn’t go.  P was sad she couldn’t win. So it was their cue to wrap things up.

Brandon even got into cleaning up his room:

Her teammates try to hug her and Peyton is a bit standoffish.  Dave told her she should be more friendly with them.  I told dave she’s in game mode is all.  But then I reminded him she doesn’t like to be hugged.  Only by mommy.  And she added, “Daddy, too.”

Saturday and Sunday tourney

We woke up by 6 am to arrive to the field by 7 am. There was already one dad there, but his daughter was in Japanese school, so he was by himself. Peyton made sure to tell us that she was the first KID there. This was already after a stop for breakfast, which Peyton didn’t eat.

The game was a bit rough. Peyton did great at the plate, going three for three, and 3 RBI’s. She scored once. We struggled in pitching, but that was to be expected.

We went to eat a little breakfast, round 2, but again, Peyton didn’t eat. She doesn’t eat much when she’s in tournaments. The next game started at 1130 am, meaning that warm ups started at 1030 am. We were the visitors, so we were up first. Peyton walked the first inning, then her teammate started pitching in the bottom of the inning. Her teammate walked 5, and had a girl hit off her before being pulled out. Peyton then went in. She walked the first batter she faced, but then struck out the next girl with two balls, then three strikes in a row. She walked the next batter, which then ended the inning, as the other team had scored 5 at this time. Peyton was then up again, and she singled, scoring two of her teammates (2 RBIs).

Peyton was pitching again. This time, she walked the first batter, then struck out her next batter. Her next batter popped up, and Peyton ran to get it. She got a glove on it, but it bounced out, and then she was stunned and didn’t chase it down. Runners ran around by this time. After another couple of walks, the coach took Peyton out and put in her other teammate. That inning ended up in 5 runs (the max). Peyton then popped up and the catcher caught. This is not something we typically see, though we usually practice it with the catchers. We only got 4 runs this inning for a total of 9 to 10. We headed home, and the kids got to relax. Peyton did practice piano immediately after coming home (and showering). She’s a trooper! We had them go to bed early, since we found out that the next game would be again at 8 am.

This morning, we got up early and headed out even earlier than yesterday. This time, Peyton did eat a little more breakfast. We arrived by 645 am, and the president and another 10 U coach had just arrived as well. The other coach joked that he wished Peyton could join their team. He’s seen Peyton’s defense work against him during the rec season. He didn’t know she was struggling a bit at the plate, but he’s seen her on the other side of it.

This morning we played the same team as we had lost to last night, 9-10. I saw one of the coaches reviewing the brackets, and he told another man, “Yes, this is the team we beat yesterday.” I had to bite my tongue to avoid saying, “And you won’t do it again!” We were again the visitors, so we started at bat first. Peyton was the second one at bat. She walked. With some walks, we got 4 runs up, but stranded 3 runners.

Her teammate started pitching first at the bottom of the inning. She struck two batters out, and had a fair amount of walks, which unfortunately, ended the inning at 4-5.

It was the top of the 2nd inning, Peyton pop flied to short stop, but with more walks, we got the score up to 9-5.

At the bottom of the inning, Peyton was in to pitch. This is from the app that we were using to keep track of the score.

I noticed something she had been doing since Friday, which was lifting up her foot. I mentioned it, and she admitted it was something new. Dave corrected action and informed her that these things were throwing off her timing, and she shouldn’t be messing around! Well, she pitched this inning with her toe down, as she had even just a week ago. She found her rhythm!

The score was still 9 to 5 our lead with us starting a new inning. We got on base through many walks, but Peyton had another bases loaded situation and popped out to pitcher. Her teammates were hitting better and drove another 5 runs in to end the inning 14 to 5. Since we were only in the third inning, the limit of 5 runs was still in effect. The old limit used to be 4 runs, and anything after the 4th inning, there are an unlimited amount of runs that can be scored. Peyton put up a bunch of walks, then she was pulled by her coach. Her teammate came in and got a strikeout before walking in the 5th run of the inning. Final score 14-10!

That meant we had another game at 3 pm. We went home again to rest; Peyton took a short nap before we headed back to the fields. The semi-final game was to be against the host’s team, which was undefeated.

We were batting first, and Peyton walked. Then, she stole second base, and it was a close throw down by a competent catcher. She had to slide, which she did perfectly! She got all dusty, but she used her sliding pads and was unharmed. Another mom was just asking me what the things on Peyton’s legs were. I told her that they were for if she ever decided to slide. Well, she picked a great time to do it. She had good form, per Dave, with her foot tucked under the top foot (figure 4), and her hands up. She was also wearing her batting gloves, which she hadn’t been up until recently.
Unfortunately, she was stranded on third base, after working so hard to get there. Her teammate pitched for the first inning.

Peyton pitched the second inning after the team went scoreless in the top of the second. She had a few walks, then two strikeouts in a row. She couldn’t close it out, and the score at that time was 0-10. The third inning was cut short with the other team going up by 12 runs, which is the ‘mercy’ rule. The coach was pleased that the team did as well as they did for their first tournament. It is not easy to win a game on Sunday, as it places the team in the semi-finals already. So glad we got them that experience early on. We’ll have a few more tournaments for the rest of the summer.

Brandon offered to carry her gear for the second game since we’d parked further away. So sweet.

Tourney day 1

I worked after dropping the kids off at school. Dave picked Peyton up from school first then came home just after I did.

I took her to practice piano while dave cleaned up. Here is what she played, after hearing the song at the recital last week.

Then, I sent Peyton to nap even though she said she wasn’t tired.

Here’s what I found after I woke up.

Hardly tired at all. She even went back to sleep after the alarm went off that dave had set.

We got her up and at ’em and dressed to play. We got to the field first and got everything set up.

Peyton started at first base for the first two innings.  The other team started getting hits early on, and it looked like it was going to be tough. It was 2-0 after the first half of the inning.  Our girls started with two outs with the first two girls.  Peyton was up third and took the walk.  Then, the next few batters all got on and the following batters proceeded to get 5 runs put up, which is the max early on.

The top of the second inning, it with one out, bases loaded. A girl hit the ball into the infield triangle between pitcher, second base and Peyton.  She ran in front of her teammate, yelling, “MINE!”   She made a backhand catch to make the play. Meanwhile, the runner at first had already left the bag and was trying to run back to first. Since Peyton was playing first, she looked up at the base and no one was covering (the second baseman is supposed to cover if the first baseman is fielding the ball).  So she ran back to the runner and tagged her back just before she reached the base. She was out!!  She made an unassisted double play! As she was tagging the player, she stumbled over first base and fell down because she’s Peyton after all and clumsy    She was sad to have made a small hole in her sleeve. I told her it’s better than her skin.  But she said, “but it’s a new shirt!”  At least she ended the inning!

We ended up with another 5 run inning in the bottom of the second.

Peyton was then up to pitch in the third inning. It was nice to be up 10-3, and she was able to throw some strikes.  She got two struck out and had a stand out inning!

But she’s only good for one inning. As evidence by the fourth inning where she came undone.  She walked runs in, at least 6 and allowed runs scored. It was ugly.  The coach pulled her thankfully and put her teammate in who shut it down. Peyton played first after that and one player’s grandpa said, “Just let the player hit down first base line and have Peyton take care of it.” Glad he had confidence in her there as she’d lost it on the mound.

We then dropped Brandon off to basketball clinic.  Dave stayed with him while I took Peyton to eat.  We brought food back from the restaurant and watched the rest of his practice.

We didn’t get home until after 9! And we’ll have to be up by 6 to get to the field by 7 to play by 8. Life’s rough for our little athlete.

Final score: 14-10

Last practice before tourney #1

I was out on the field today to help field balls. Another dad at practice challenged the girls to see if they could field a ball before the parents. And if not, they had to run 3 laps.  This guy is in his 50s or older. With a bad back. The girls were telling Peyton to cover me, but she yelled to them all, “No, my mom is fast!!”

The kids got their uniforms tonight:

Challenger and Piano Recital

Peyton showered and changed into her dress for her recital. Dress code was “wedding attire” so she went to her recent go-to dress.  Brandon went the opposite and got his baseball sunny weather gear together for the challenger game. We dropped him off at the field, and he went with his team, while dave, Peyton, and I went to the senior center. We arrived early, and she still didn’t want to practice. I warned her it was a new piano for her, and she should get to know it. Several of the big kids warmed up, but Peyton still declined.  She even challenged me that if she didn’t miss any notes, I’d get her ice cream.  We took our seats and waited for her turn.  She was half way through the first page of the program after many of the younger kids. Because there were some kids that had to leave, her teacher invited up the Certificate of Merit kids first.  There were only a few and one was absent.  Peyton was first to be introduced.

Then they invited all the kids up to join them.

Then she waited.  She was calm until the person right before her. She looked nervous, and I reminded her to bow before and after.  She nodded in agreement.

Here she is!

Here’s her rewards up close:

She got the special sticker for honors, which means she scored 5 or 5+ (scale is 1-5+)

We left quickly to go get Brandon, who was just wrapping up with his game. He was invited over to an impromptu swim party, so we took him to change and then Dave dropped him back off at his teammate’s grandma’s building pool. We happened to see her at the store, too!

He will be dropped off by his friend’s mom on their way back home. What a great weekend!

Four sports, 24 hours

Friday night, Brandon went to basketball clinic with Dave. Peyton went to bed early after international night. Then, on Saturday, Brandon had a baseball game at noon.  We rushed from that to Peyton’s pitching lesson for softball, then ran out of time as the coach didn’t have another lesson for the next half hour.  We chatted her up a bit more then realized how late we were.  We ran home to change Brandon as he was still in full uniform and didn’t want to be seen at volleyball in it.  He wasn’t too late, but late is late, at least 20 minutes. Peyton joined her teammate, Tyler, whose big brother was there. We got them to bed a bit earlier again because Peyton had her team practice at 8am!  We got there early and were the first ones there.  She then practiced for 2 hours, and Dave made her stay after to put into practice what she learned the day before. One dad stayed to be her batter as he asked his daughter to fill in, but she declined in favor of the play structure. Peyton practiced for another 15-20 minutes before we headed home to shower up for the next part of our day.

Post science camp and FAME

I headed to Peyton’s class for her last art lesson.

There was a picture on a grid available for the class to see. Each kid got a tile to add to the larger picture based on their class number.  Peyton was 21 and H was 22.

They’re creating:

Then as each kid finishes up, they brought them to put together:

We then went to international night where he played in the band.

And then basketball clinic.  No rest at all!

Science camp

After packing and re packing this weekend, dave dropped Brandon off at science camp on Monday.

I’d been asked by a mom friend to take pictures of G and B before departure, but I’d already arrived at work.

I did get this from another mom:

Brandon had requested David to be his roommate among a group of 5.

I later got this from the teacher: “All is well up here. So far it has been a smooth opening to science camp.
