Paris trip

We headed to the airport after dropping the kids off at school and doing a few last minute errands like snack-shopping.  Dave’s co-worker gave us a ride  since he was in Seattle.  The trip there was uneventful. I was in an aisle seat with a retired veterinarian next to me. Suong was in the row back of me at the window.  The vet chatted me up for while awhile even though I wanted to sleep and watch movies! 

We arrived and took a metro to our first Airbnb.  We showered up then headed out to explore.  We ended up at a cafe then met up  with a friend of Suong’s. He treated us to ice cream and we packed a gift for her friend.  We opened it up to makeop sure it was legit. It was. 

We turn in early that evening.  We woke up early because of jetlag. But we didn’t officially get up until 8 when my alarm was set. We made our way to Disneyland Paris. We didn’t cross the start line until 30 minutes after the start of the race. We spent the first 5k running around both parks. It was a great start, with all the runners keeping a good pace.  Then I started to slow down. I lost Suong as I fell behind after a water break.  I kept going but it wasn’t at nearly the same pace. We didn’t set an alarm. Our first time not having to! But then it was 1030 am by the time we woke up. Breakfast ended at 11 and check out was that time too. Luckily we got an extended check out. We are first and then got ready to leave. We were our right at noon.  We went to shop for last minute gifts and then headed back to the city.  We found our next Airbnb and arrived just in time to check in. We got settled and then explored again. Right before leaving, I called home to wish them all a good morning and start of their week.  We headed to the Sacre Coeur. There was a heavy military presence which was a little unnerving and definitely a theme on our trip.  

 We went to the Eiffel Tower for pictures and a ride in the elevator after scanning our bags twice.  We saw more military personnel standing on guard. We were struggling with soreness so good thing the stairs were not an option. I had considered it but was happy to ride the elevator.  We got to see the sunset from the tower and then took pictures after we departed. We headed back home and found a side walk cafe to have a late dinner. We couldn’t sleep this night, staying up until after 2am. It was so late, i even got to talk to the kids! Dave called while I was still texting him.  Peyton was taking notes on her online reading. I’d been up since last talking to her!  

I set my alarm for 1030 so as not to sleep through the day. I was up before that, and then ready to go. Suong slept in a bit, and we didn’t get out of the place until after noon.  We hit up a crepe place and then headed to the Louvre.  When we got there, we had intended to just take pictures but had considered going in. Well that decision was made for us too as the museum is not open on Tuesdays. From there, we headed down the Seine to Notre Dame for some pictures. From there, we took the metro to pick up my purses.  We did that in about 30 minutes then headed to the Arc de Triomphe.  We took pictures from the different angles before heading down the Champs Elysee. We didn’t anymore shopping but it was time to eat. We had mussels next to a fellow American outside on the cobblestone.  We headed back after our meal to slowly make our way back. It was about 9 or so now, and I wanted ice cream or some kind of dessert.  I had just wanted a cart or stand but none were to be found. We finally did find one, but I think maybe for the first time ever, I didn’t finish it!  We came home and packed up. We got to bed late but woke up early. We got out of the house and to the airport in an hour by train.  We had to walk about a half mile but we waited for the bakery to open. No such luck. Suong had a container ready to fill to take home. But we’d have to wait until the airport. It took me awhile to get the VAT back but I did. We went through customs and then another line for security. I got coffee and croissant after the final gate area. We were running out of time. So no extra airport shipping. Suong could have since she had two hours but once past our point, we were limited and there was exit or re entry at that point. Soon, we had time for one more selfie, then I was leaving to board.

Birthday…in a nutshell

This year, my birthday flew by as it was a regular Tuesday. I had a training in Pleasanton, and since Ted was on his way there, he was going to give us all a ride. Last time, Jenn drove so this time, she drove to me, and then I drove to Michelle’s. When the kids got up, Peyton asked me why I was there, since it was Tuesday. NONE of them said anything about my birthday. Jenn was the first person in person to wish me a happy birthday, followed by Michelle and Ted when we arrived. They were waiting for us to go, and we headed out right away. We made good time, and then we were even given breakfast! The training went by quickly, and it even ended early. We waited for Ted to come back, and then we made good time back. I went to go get the kids, but when I got to cdc, they were gone. The director told me dad already got them. By his signature, it was at least 45 minutes ago. I called him and he told me he’d texted me. I guess I hadn’t gotten the text, since I told him I’d go get them in the afternoon, since he was already dropping them off. I said “NO!” then recanted, “Well, I’m here at this meeting, so that’s special!” She broke into the happy birthday song. My face was red and my eyes were blurry. I’d already been announced as a board member earlier in the evening, but THIS was embarrassing. I later put all the chairs away and was chatting with the parents. The principal came over to me and told me to go home and celebrate what was left. Brandon’s teacher is the PTA liasion, and she came up to me, too. She even awarded him a green slip for helping a friend yesterday! That’s the best birthday present!

Now, I’m about to embark on a trip to Paris with Suong. I’ve dropped the kids off at school, while Dave is in Seattle, and my mom will come pick them up later today. Whirlwind birthday celebration! We learned that while I’m gone, Peyton’s  troop will be going on a “hike” for their troop meeting. I had asked a mom to pick her up on Tuesday for the meeting. Looong Day

Today, Peyton started out the day by with her softball game. We arrived over one hour before game time, even before the coach. Dave set up his nets, then coach showed up. Brandon had brought his scooter, so he was thoroughly entertained. The girls showed up slowly, and they were incorporated into practice. Our team was the visitor, so we were up first. Peyton was the lead off batter. When she got up to bat, the opposing coach yelled out to his team, “Infield, take two steps in.” She ended up walking, but it was sad that they didn’t respect her. Our team was encouraging her to hit it over their heads! We ended up scoring 2 runs that inning, as Peyton stole second and then third. For the bottom of the inning, Peyton started out the game by pitching. She pitched a strike on the first pitch. Then proceeded to hit the batter. Yikes! She ended up walking another, but she did put together some strikes. It was a long process, pitch after pitch. Later, with the second inning, the girls did well. They did get some hits off coach. I was hoping that she was relieved but she went back out there. He was going to give her a shot at it again. She looked more tired this time, with more balls going high or extremely low. She did get a few more strikes off, and then we ended up getting the outs in the end. But the other team did score some runs. She got another at bat later, and she battled against the pitcher to get to the coach. From there, she smacked one out past the third baseman to knock two girls in.

She was relieved in the third inning, but instead of sitting out, like the other pitcher had, she ended up going to short stop! This time, K was the pitcher. She did a good job, too! After the game, Coach came up to Peyton to ask her what she did right. She didn’t answer him. He wanted her to think about it and then watch some youtube videos of some pitchers in slow motion. He is also on a mission to get Peyton to talk to him, like so many others who have come before him. He’s making progress, but it’s still slow. He told her she had 6 strike outs. We think she had only 3 from herself, and that the other three were from their own coach, but we’ll take it.

After the game and snacks, we headed over to the KP event at HH. The kids were so excited, and even said so! They were giddy, and wanted to do the roller coaster. Dave got us lunch, and we ate it while the kids were in line. We could see them from the outside, and they were behaving well, so I didn’t have to intervene. Dave scouted them out from the other side, and he could tell when they were getting closer to the front. He had come back, so we said good bye, and we headed to get some food to bring to the Kao’s. Brandon was already dressed for swimming. Peyton soon got there. They almost immediately went to the pool, excited to be there. As long as the girls stayed with the girls, and the boys together, then there were no issues. The kids spent about an hour inside, then Ted grilled up some fish patties for us. We had a yummy dinner, Brandon was done, but had to wait for Marcus. Peyton had to wait until Mckayla was done, but they had finished about the same time. They all went to play, and we didn’t hear back from them as much when they were in separate areas. We wrapped up around 7, so we could get home. Peyton knew she still had piano left, just one more song, while Brandon had his whole set to go. Both finished up quickly, as I knew they were tired. Tomorrow is an “off day” for them, with CDC camp, since the teachers have staff development day. That will be a welcome break with no homework or other activities during the day. It’ll be piano as usual for Brandon.

Peyton is already getting whiny again about my impending departure. She asked me on the way out from Michelle’s, “So, um, can I, you know, do what I did last night?” She’d slept in my bed last night, earning it as a reward for not melting down. Michelle chimed in and asked, “You mean sleep with your parents?” Peyton was so caught off guard, she was stunned into silence! She looked away quickly, and I think she wanted to crawl in a hole. While I was kissing her goodnight, I helped change her from long sleeve to short, and it brushed against her head. It wasn’t even 8 pm, and she was almost out just by doing that. She was so tired.

Kids…

Peytons basketball league is very family-oriented. The parents are required to stay for all of practice. This means oftentimes there are siblings hanging around. Then her sister did the same and sat in front of her. The five year old said, “Your kid’s good.”  I asked her which kid she was talking about.  She positively identified Peyton. Then she pointed to her sister and said, “That’s my kid.”  I asked her if she’d play basketball later.  She shook her head. She plays soccer.  She told me that her dad went to go get them lunch. She said, “I think he went to get sandwiches.  But I don’t like sandwiches.”  I asked her, “Even peanut butter and jelly?”  She told me no because her brother was allergic.  Responsible five year old.  When her mom came back, I let her know about our conversation.  These girls will “grow up” together in the league. There were only four today, so they got a good work out in.

Sports Day

This morning, Peyton had softball practice. Dave went out for coffee, then came back with breakfast for everyone. We were there early, but there was a cricket match going on. We slowly rolled the cart on the field, and while we were in a certain stretch, the “pitcher” held the ball since we were in the “hit” zone. As we walked by, Brandon said, “I want to watch Daddy kick them off the field!” Uh, slick move there. Three of us made our way, then Peyton brought up the rear, causing another cessation of play. We were going to have Peyton pitch, but since they were taking over the whole field, we had to wait. They left promptly at 9 am as other members of the team showed up.

Picture Day

Yesterday was Brandon’s picture day. Not much fuss other than a hair cut while Peyton and I were at the girl scouts meeting. He had a scab on his face that he’d been picking at. Great timing, and I didn’t spring for the touch up package. Grr…

Today, I was at work by 6 am, so I didn’t help in the picture day readiness process for Peyton. I helped her pick out a dress last night, that was the extent of things. I picked up today, and she was pretty well put together. She had asked if she could wear her boots, which she had, but she’d rolled down the cuffs (to matching heights, I might add), and looked decent! Her hair was a bit of a mess, but I’m hoping it was better put together earlier in the day. I had texted Dave earlier in the morning to ask about the hair. He hadn’t said much, as usual. Glasses?

Brandon told me he couldn’t see the piano notes. I just thought it was his excuse, since he didn’t know the note names. But I made an appointment for him anyway last week on Friday. But it was the day I was trying to get my runners packet, so I postponed it until today. We were a bit late for the appointment, since I thought it was 330pm, but it was at 320 pm.
