Singing! and Playing

Yesterday morning, while he was playing in his room with Legos, Brandon was practicing his songs. I tried to capture what I could, since if I ask him to sing it, he won’t.

Interplanet Janet. When I heard it later in the day, he doesn’t actually have to sing this part; it’s sung by the lead. But he knows it!

Work was a normal day, except at the end, there was a going away party for one of our docs who is retiring. I headed over to attend and brought a card we’d signed. From there, I left to get the kids for piano. Peyton went first, then Dave picked her up to take her home to do homework. I brought Brandon home, and he changed into his uniform then read for his required amount tonight. Dave took Peyton to practice, then he was going to keep her for his own Pirates practice, while I stayed with Brandon at his game. As they left, and Brandon finished up, I saw Peyton’s water bottle on the table. I shooed Brandon out so we could drop it off on our way to the game. We saw Sydney on their way in, and I handed the bottle off to Natalie, then we headed to the game. We were super early, as Brandon wasn’t supposed to be there until 445 pm. It was just after 430 pm. Coach Rick, of the other team, invited Brandon to go warm up with his players. He was super nice, and Brandon went to play with their boys until Coach Tom showed up. Then, Brandon wandered back to warm up with Devon and later Kai. I needed gas badly; I was down to 15 miles. So, I left Brandon at the park, and headed home to get my phone, and then gas. I got back, and more of the A’s were there. I set up shop on the bleachers in the shade. I was in a tank top, and the weather was perfect! I’d packed two bottles of water for Brandon, knowing it was going to be hot on the field. He was in a better mood to play today, fortunately, so there was no drama.
They are continuing to pitch kids, but the coach pitches the first two innings.
Here is his first at-bat against Will, a first grade pitcher!

Solid base hit.
The other one, he hit into a double play, and finally, his last, a line drive, was caught by their shortstop.

The game lasted until 7 pm, then Dave came by after their practice. Peyton was very chatty, telling me about water balloons at their practice, and that she practiced with the boys, too. She told me she fielded a ball that Ryan hit. We headed to eat dinner, and we saw the Thorton’s who most likely had come from softball. Peyton went over on her own to go talk to Karlee and Hailey. I’m proud of her going by herself across the restaurant. She stayed for awhile over there before returning and scarfing her food down. Both kids were hungry, and we didn’t have to have reminders to eat. When we got home, it was way past their bedtime. Peyton didn’t want to shower even! Gross! She did finally with help, and then both were out like a light. I packed up their lunches for tomorrow, as we have to make a quick escape to school. I need to set up the art lesson while still attending the assembly to see Peyton get her walk a thon award. Peyton will go to Hope’s birthday party, while Brandon and I will rehearse (per HIS request) for his show. Maybe I’ll try to squeeze in a run there before lunchtime with the kinders. I really want to go get Brandon’s shot, but I don’t want to mess up anything with his arm and drama performance.

Practice Practice

Today, I went in to work and had an easier day because Dave was chaperoning with Brandon’s class. Since he was with one kid, that meant, in the back of my mind, I only had to worry about one. I’d reminded Dave about our shots that we needed for vacation, and since he’d returned Brandon to school by 215pm, he should just wait for Peyton and take her to get her shots along with his. I got a text later that he’d done that, and then he stopped by icebox to get her ice cream for her troubles. He ran into my OB and her son, Brandon’s basketball teammate, Nathan there. Dave was taking Peyton to their warm-up for the game at 430 pm. I left work at 424 pm, to rush home. I had to pick up the head shots that I’d mounted, along with our dinner and Brandon’s clothes. I quickly changed, then headed to the multi to pick Brandon up from drama. Today was their dress rehearsal and tech check. They had their costumes on and were sitting on their spots on risers. I chatted with a few moms there, and Ms Erica told us that they were running behind. She apologized, but then said it was okay to take kids if they needed to go. I waited, and they were done by 515 pm or so. Brandon ran to change out of his costume and back into regular clothes. Then, I grabbed his bag, and we headed out. He was in some kind of a mood, as he said he was hot and tired. I had him change in the car, and he didn’t like that. He wanted me to park somewhere else so no one would see him change. Finally, we arrived at the park with five minutes to spare. He was still grumpy and had to take the field first. His attitude was pretty bad, and it was clear he wasn’t trying his best. It was a disappointment, especially since he was lazy and didn’t get a few tags that he normally would’ve been able to get. He shook it off after a full inning, but his bat wasn’t doing well today either. He pitched in the third inning, and he walked the first two batters, including his pre-school friend, Kyle, before striking out the biggest kid on the team. After he walked another batter, then their pitcher came in to finish up the inning. Peyton ate her dinner, while I tried to watch the game.

I got my baby fix as I held Brynn, who is 8 weeks old or so. Then, the game was over, and Dave met up with the team. The other kids’ dads were raking the field. We came home and both kids showered while we got Brandon something to eat. Peyton was given some milk and the chicken I’d forgotten about. She got to sleep around 8 pm, which is really late for her, but Brandon needed to go through his script. He verbalized he was nervous about the show tomorrow. He will have an assembly for the school. Peyton was so excited, she said, “I get to see my brother in the assembly!”

While we were eating dinner, Dave got an email that Brandon was being requested to play for Coach Tom again. Dave asked Brandon, and he snapped, “No.” He said he had “stuff” to do. Dave told Tom that he had to ask Brandon himself. Next text, “I’ll be right over.” And sure enough, there was a knock on the door, and man to man, Tom asked Brandon to play for him. He said they were undefeated when Brandon played for them. In fact, Brandon preferred to play with the A’s than his own team. Brandon did tell Tom no, but finally, Tom wore him down to a handshake. The deal was sealed. We have a game tomorrow…but at least Peyton has her own practice.

The post is kind of all over the place as Dave has a lot of stuff to say to me now, telling me about his shots (hurting, all three of them – hep A, MMR – since it’s not on record, and typhoid) and the field trip. He got to see the kids in the class and how they act. He knows now why Brandon does and says some of the things he does. He said Peyton took hers like a champ! She didn’t cry at all, and she looked directly at the needle go into her arm. He’s telling me that she was asking him a million questions in the car. Like she holds all her words in and saves them for when she’s got a captive audience. Now, I am tasked with getting Brandon in there. He’s already telling me that he doesn’t want to go. oh boy!

Peyton said she got some ice cream, and that Dave got some for me, too. But then she realized, “Wait, Daddy, where is the ice cream?” Dave told her he’d eaten it, but really, he had saved it. I’ll eat it another day…maybe on a day I can run.

Not Enough Time!

There are not enough hours in the day. Today was my early shift; I was at work by 550 am. I got a good walk in with Julie, then it was off to get the kids. I had them do piano, and Peyton’s reading. Brandon has a lighter load because of testing, so he did his math online, while Peyton ate and took a shower. We were ready to go to the Girl Scouts meeting by 530 pm, but Dave wasn’t home. So that meant, we all went to the meeting. We brought Peyton’s garden, her handmade card and flowers for her leaders (all 5 of them), and her vest. Brandon brought a book. He fit right in with all the other older brothers. They disappeared to the game room, and soon each kid had a device of some sort. Peyton joined them for a bit before being kicked out to join her troop. Of course she feels most at home with a bunch of older boys. Today’s activity was a group trail mix; each friend brought one ingredient to mix together. We brought rice Chex. The girls were doing a craft first, then the meeting started. Each girl got a bowl and a spoon, and they passed ingredients around in a circle. Peyton’s eyes lit up when she saw the M&M’s and chocolate chips coming around. Twice. Luckily, she had a smaller bowl than some of the other girls, but boy did she fill it! The meeting was a bit shorter, with the activities wrapping up by 645 pm. In the meantime, Dave had come to fetch Brandon, so I didn’t have to worry about him. The last 15 minutes was the awards ceremonies. They received the rest of their petals, then they got their cookie awards. The troop lead on this one revealed the prizes in order from lowest to most sold. I think Peyton knew she’d sold a lot and patiently waited for her turn to be called.

She reviewed her prizes with her other leader, and she told her joke, as is customary now.

Brandon was willingly reading the rest of his book, wanting to finish so we can watch the movie this weekend that we’d gotten from the library. Peyton went to bed, and then Brandon. I headed out to another meeting for our reading group. We’re planning the end the year festivities. It was supposed to be 30 minutes, but ended up 1.5 hours. I got home at 10 pm, and then I got to work on my drama duties. I volunteered to mount the head shots and label with their names. I’d gotten the supplies this afternoon, when another mom dropped the pictures off from Walgreen’s. I figured it’d take me about an hour, but it took 1.5 hours. It’s almost midnight now, and I’m finally able to get my blogging in. I’m pooped!
Tomorrow is another baseball game, for Brandon but he has a late drama rehearsal until 5 pm, so he’ll run late for that. I have to pick him up in exchange for the head shots, then pick up the dinner that I made for Peyton and me before going back to the game. Dave will be chaperoning the field trip for Brandon’s class, and then off to the game at 430 pm. I think he’ll have some breathing room tomorrow, but no such luck for me!

Michelle was telling me that Marcus told Mckayla that Brandon helped him read at the museum the last time we went together.  They were reading about the decomposing mouse/hamster and beetles.  And Marcus read some words and numbers, and Brandon read him the rest.  I didn’t want to go near it as I saw enough when I went with Mckayla the first time.  Then Marcus told Mckayla that mice sleep during the day. Hike and Sunday Baseball?

This morning, we didn’t have time to lounge around as we had a girl scout hike to attend, while Brandon and Dave went to baseball practice. I had a picnic lunch packed for us, and we slathered on sunblock. I layered us in case it was cool. It was supposed to be a 2 hour hike, from 10 am to 12 pm or so, and Dave had bought tickets to the baseball game again, which started at 2 pm. Our goal was to get through one full game. The first time, we left for baseball practice, and the second time, Friday, was too late for us. We arrived early to one of the girl’s houses close to the park, and we found parking in the driveway. Once everyone showed up, we reviewed some safety tips, and then headed out. Our first stop was to take a look around at the colors in nature. The girls were given 3 crayon colors, and they were supposed to find that color in nature. The leader purposely didn’t give the girls just green or blue. Peyton got spring green, blue-green and purple. Surprisingly, we got purple first! There was a wildflower right next to us that was a similar shade that she had of the crayon. later, someone traded for it, and Peyton got green. But she did find a rock that was bluish-green, and a blade of grass that was the spring green. The leader de-briefed and reviewed the colors that the girls found. We found a field of poppies, and Peyton told me, “Those are California Golden poppies!” She has a few state books, and the state flowers are included. Our destination was a barn, which was emptied out, and had picnic benches. We ate our lunches there, and Peyton was one of the last still eating. She had some tomatoes, grapes, turkey sandwich, and apple chips and nuts. She started with the apple chips, grapes, then turkey and ended with the tomatoes. I had a salad and an apple. After lunch, we headed to see the animals in the farm. There were sheep, goats, ducks, rabbits and two cows. We saw one of Peyton’s classmates there with his family. They were checking things out, too. It was high noon, and it was pretty warm at this point. We headed back uphill, and I chatted with one of the leaders, while trying to see if Peyton would come on her own or lag behind. She was bringing up the rear with a few other girls. She didn’t look exhausted, which was a good thing, since it was hot and naptime. We all made it back, and the kids started playing with the girl’s animals – a cat and a dog. The dog was super friendly, and they were petting and being licked by it. The cat was also enjoying being petted, but I think maybe they were being too rough, as Peyton came over and showed me a scratch on her hand. The skin was broken, but it wasn’t a puncture. I waited and informed the leader of what had happened. She informed the dad/owner of what had happened, and he reassured her and me that the cat was up to date on shots, etc. I tried not to sound too alarmed, but I do remember that segment in our ID classes – animal bites. I headed straight there, and I called the advice nurse on my way over. The advice nurse set up a phone interview for an hour later with Peyton’s PCP. She was working today! As soon as I hung up with the advice nurse, I was pulling into the parking lot. My phone rang. I thought it was Dave, but it was Dr C! I told her, “Boy you are fast!” I had JUST hung up with the nurse. She said she wanted to call ASAP since she saw “animal bite” as reason for call. She wanted to be sure to call first in case it required a visit or more urgent appointment. I was hoping it wasn’t too much trouble, since I really didn’t want to go in, but I didn’t want it to get bad either. Fortunately, she didn’t have any anaphylaxis symptoms that the advice nurse had been screening for. Dr C just wanted some topical antibiotic on it, and filed an oral antibiotic in case she had further signs of infection. With that taken care of, I then called Dave to find out how to meet him to get inside. We did just as the National Anthem was being performed. My original plan was to go home after the hike and have Peyton sleep! This was not looking good for us with her being hot and tired. Dave brought clothes for Peyton, and a shirt for me. He didn’t bring me a shirt, so I was stuck in my fun run bright yellow shirt. I’d worn the same shirt as Peyton to make sure we were both identifiable. We changed in the potty, then headed to our seats after the first half-inning, not wanting to block anyone’s way. Dave had seats right by the dugout, first row. It was super close, and I was afraid of being hit by foul balls. Both kids had their gloves there, but I felt naked and exposed Dave’s glove was in my trunk, too, but I didn’t bring it in when I came. Peyton was involved in the game for at least 2 innings, then she got hot and thirsty. Dave came back with chocolate malts for the kids. Not sure how that would satisfy her thirst! We were mostly able to enjoy the game, but the kids took turns causing some trouble. While she was up, Peyton was able to call out where the play was, depending on the position of the base runners. Eventually, Peyton took a nap on Dave’s lap, while Brandon just watched the game. We made it through the full game, and since it was Sunday, the kids had the opportunity to run the bases. They declined however, as Brandon said, “I ran them at camp last year, I don’t want to.” Peyton, of course, didn’t want to by herself either. One thing to note was the on deck circle was right in front of us, and we could hear the conversations of the players, they were that close. Peyton honed in on one player, and when I reminded her to wear her sunglasses, she said, “Like Ty Moore, he’s wearing his sunglasses.” The Bruins were out in the field, so I didn’t know who was who, but sure enough, when I saw him up again, Moore’s first name was Ty! As we walked out of the stadium, the kids were trying to find the closing pitcher, Berg, who Brandon had met last summer at camp. He was wearing his camp shirt, and the head coach did point to us and say, “Hey, there’s a Bruin family!” We didn’t see Bergy, but we saw all the players load up onto the bus and head out of the stadium. Dave didn’t want to take pictures because they were in a hurry. Brandon wanted to but got shy at the end. We headed to the shopping center across the street to eat a quick dinner and get food for the week before I headed home with the kids to shower them. Dave went to pick up the prescription and came back to put it on Peyton’s hand. Lights were out right before 8 pm, which is still an hour later that I had hoped. Here are the pictures, including one of the dvr still of us in the front row 🙂

Baseball Saturday

It’s not a Saturday without baseball! Well, we did get spoiled last week during spring break, but we’re back!
This morning started with Dave’s last field prep, since it’s our last game where we are the home team. He took off for the field, while I got the kids ready. It was a twist however, since Brandon was playing for Coach Tom’s team. I drove to Tom’s house, and their kids were at the breakfast table, all in their jammies. I didn’t want to go empty handed, so I grabbed two apples, unwashed, uncut, and brought the kids over. Brandon happily sat down at the table, as they were eating Portuguese sausage, Hawaiian fried rice and eggs! Lucky him! He was offered ketchup, and he gladly accepted. Peyton and I stayed just a bit chatting with the Daron’s before leaving for her game. I thanked the Daron’s for an extra kid to their already three. We said goodbye to Brandon and left. Dave was just about done with field prep. I packed Peyton’s breakfast, and she ate that in her dugout. She asked me for a jacket, and even clarified, “Any jacket! I’m cold!” She’s not kidding that she’s cold, since asking for a jacket is taboo in our family! I started warming up with her, throwing balls to her back and forth. Finally, the rest of the team arrived. They started to warm up on their own, while Dave managed the helmets for the batting order. I chatted with the moms of course, and we cheered the girls on. They were starting to call outs now, so if the kids were out, they were pulled off the bases. I think this lit a competitive fire under the girls, as they seemed to be trying harder to make plays. Dave turned the shed keys in to the main field guy, who we’d met at the beginning of the season. He complimented Dave telling him he did the best fields of any team, and any division. Dave said he’d take the compliment, but wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing. The guy said he definitely agreed!
Here are her at-bats for today.
1) She was the home run hitter, and she spanked it out there, and you can see all the kids scramble to get it at once. She did get home without them getting it back to home plate, for a true HR!

2) She seems to struggle with her second at-bat, like she did at the last game she played.

3)
The big guy in the frame is the coach we handed the keys to, and later ran the skills competition.

Then, after the game and snacks, we headed over to Brandon’s game with Coach Tom. Dave got to semi-relax, as he wasn’t coaching, but of course, he can’t sit still. So, he was walking around, looking at everything, and then noticed the coach behind the plate as one dad from MA. I didn’t know who he was talking about, then Brandon came over and said, “Look, that’s Kyle!” OH, I couldn’t put it together his parents’ names, but I did slowly recall their names, Greg and Kathy. Brandon and Kyle had been at each other’s birthday parties, at least 4 years ago as well as a playdate in the park. I headed over to the other side of the plate to the visitor’s stands. I said hello to Kathy, and we chatted. Kyle is still at MA with some friends from preschool. This is his second year in baseball, and he’s really loving it. Kathy couldn’t believe how tall and thin Brandon was. I told her the baby fat is definitely all gone. (I didn’t want to mention that Dave is concerned Brandon is not keeping up his growth pattern compared to the rest of his friends!) I talked with her right up until the last half inning, right when Brandon was up again.

Brandon’s at-bat’s for Tom’s team, when I wasn’t chatting with other moms…
1)
Dave got this one, from behind the backstop. This is when he noticed Greg.

It clanged off the fence right where we were sitting.
2) Peyton is playing with her video game, and I’m trying to shush her. This is his last at-bat with the A’s, as I missed a few. He’s got patience, and an eye. Second walk!

I missed the ball that he hit out into deep center left field. Dave said if he didn’t hit opposite field, he’d totally crush the ball! This was right as I had scooted over to Kathy’s bench, and she asked where Brandon was when I told her he’d just hit the ball. She could find him in the outfield, but everyone looks the same with a batting helmet on.

Peyton was by herself at this point, since Dave was warming up with the Pirates. Later, after the game, I headed back over to chat with Greg, too. We actually saw each other more frequently due to drop off schedules. I pulled Brandon over to chat with Kyle, too, and both were a bit shy. Brandon took off to go play with his team, while I talked to Kyle about school. They left, and it was just Peyton and me cheering on the Pirates before some other parents arrived. Somehow it was an off day, and we didn’t get many fans until later in the innings. The Pirates played a tough game, but it wasn’t meant to be against the Brewers. Dave thinks Brandon played better for Coach Tom than he did for his own team. I think it’s because he was tired out by then! Also, because they were winning. 😉 Brandon pitched another inning, but this time, he didn’t keep it together and walked three kids before Dave came out to pitch.

1) He was tired of taking balls, apparently. He reached for this ball which was totally over his head…

2) His patience is now lost at this point, hitting off Dave. Or he’s playing too much golf.

We wrapped up the game with me taking the kids home, while Dave followed shortly after. I fed the kids here, then it was quiet time for Peyton to take a nap. She did, and Dave woke her up just before it was time to leave for her skills competition. She was still groggy, and we threw her in the car, and got her cleats ready to go. We couldn’t find parking, so Dave dropped us off, so we could go check in. Dave eventually found parking and followed up with Brandon and her bat bag. First up was the throwing competition. They had the 6U’s go first, and I’d talked about going first with Peyton. I told her the strategy on these kinds of events is NOT to go first, so you can measure your competition. I think the crowd may have scared her, or she took my advice to heart, but she was NOT first. I think she was second or third, but there were only 4 teams in her league. Peyton threw two balls, and one was out toward the outfield grass area.

Next was base-running, which Hailey did to represent our team. She ran fast! Then, it was Peyton’s turn again for batting distance

, and then throwing accuracy
I think Brandon was whispering, “Make it in!” I would like to think he’s cheering for his sister 🙂

I couldn’t tell if she’d won or not, as the main coach, who we’d turned the keys into earlier in the day, was keeping the results on a clipboard. Coach Todd was trying to guess if Peyton was a winner in any of her categories or not, but he said the winners would be announced at the closing ceremonies. Coach Todd was trying to crane his neck to see the clipboard, and said he thought he saw an asterisk by her name and maybe on the batting competition. Dave thinks she could have swept her categories if she threw the way she was throwing when he practiced with her. He said he had to shove her in line, and that she was resisting a bit when it was her turn. Hopefully she won at least one of them. While she was batting, I did overhear another mom say, “That’s the girl we played earlier today, let’s see how she bats!” right before Peyton crushed it into the field. So, we left the field to close out our baseball activities for the day. We headed home for homework for both kids, piano, and dinner. Dave took off on foot for his beer night with the PTA men. I’m proud of him for getting himself out there for the sake of fundraising and socializing with other dads at school. I think the opportunity to drink beer with dudes also was enough for him as well. Peyton had practiced piano first tonight, then I told her she could watch TV. Brandon played next, and his deal was that when he finished, he could send Peyton to bed and watch tv himself. That lit a fire under him, and he did his best to finish his songs with time to spare. She didn’t know the deal, so she agreed to go to bed. I closed my bedroom door, and let Brandon watch, while Peyton fell asleep by 745 pm. Brandon continued to watch until 830 pm, and then it was bedtime for him. Unfortunately, Peyton woke up to go potty right before that, and saw that Brandon was awake. She said, “Hey, I didn’t get to watch tv for that long (the downfall of her being able to tell time and calculate time elapsed).” I told her Brandon was sleeping right then, and she didn’t give me too much trouble. Hopefully both will fall asleep soon, and I can sit and relax!
