Hands up stand up pair up

Most Thursdays, Peyton’s class plays a game to review their vocabulary words. They pair up and battle each other shouting out answers. She’s won many times and every Thursday I ask how she does. Three weeks ago, she won a 49ers pennant. She put it on her backpack. The next week, she got another one, this time the Rams. She wanted to give it to daddy. Now Brandon wants to put in an order.

Author letter

Friday after school Peyton and I got the mail. She’d received a letter back from the author she’d written. She was so surprised and couldn’t wait to open it.

Here was her letter to the author:

Sunday

It was a lazy morning with just getting up and going to practice with Peyton. I made parfaits for everyone in the car and then a coffee run was made just before going to the field. I’d asked the coach if there was practice since the other coach was out at a bachelor party weekend. Nine out of 11 girls showed up. We knew one of the girls would be dropped off and her aunt was going to pick her up. But midway through her mom asked us to drop her off to a Girl Scout meeting. Luckily, the meeting was 2 minutes from our house. Practice ended up going until after noon, over three hours. They went over plays and had different drills today including tennis balls being hit at them. They were super bouncy and going all over the place but they worked on their agility and hand-eye coordination. Peyton and her friend were in two different groups but they both loved the drill!

There was music blaring in the school PA system through coach’s phone. This was a new thing for the girls so fun for them!

After 1215, we took Peyton’s friend for lunch for us all. She had her meeting at 1230, Brandon had to be back close to Peyton’s practice by 115 and Peyton had piano at 130. We got lunch, dropped the boys off to get their car, and I took Peyton with me to drop off her friend at the meeting. Fortunately, we know her Girl Scout leader through softball, so it was a warm handoff.

We went home, Peyton finished up lunch, showered, practiced and then went to piano for her performance party.

I went home to do laundry, then went back to get her friend from the meeting. Her mom was coming from Oakland, and they weren’t going to make it back before the meeting ended. We came back home, and we met up with her mom who came just in time for me to go back and pick up Peyton by 230. Phew. We got home and I finally ate lunch since I hadn’t had a moment to eat a salad without making a mess. She worked on her cereal commercial while the boys were out at baseball practice. When they came home, Dave cut Brandon’s hair while Peyton worked on her math online. I headed out with the girls for dinner. Michelle came to get me, and we stood in line waiting to enter the restaurant. We had reservations so we sat quickly in our spot for 8. 7 of us ended up showing up for a good time with good friends!

Happy birthday to the March birthday girls!

Growing up

Peyton spent over 3 hours on her book report project today. Still not done, but as she was doing one part, she told me “Mind you, I still need to put the picture on there”. Mind you?!? Really?!

Rainy walk a thon

For the second year in a row, the WAT was held in the rain. That meant nobody was allowed on the grass and the kids had to stay on the concrete. I signed up for a punch shift at the end so I went to work in the morning and picked Peyton up from class. We did have some sun and some drizzle but mostly it turned out for the best!

Peyton was going to walk with H but there was some drama there so she ended up going with A for awhile before going alone. I was there to support her, but I was wearing rain boots so I didn’t run with her. I got her water and food and she knew where I was. When it was my turn in the shift, she knew where to find me. Brandon made his way over even though I told him his other option was to go home. He hung out with his friends, bummed Cheetos (as evidence by the tell tale ring of shame around his mouth) and found me at the end. Peyton walked 52 laps (roughly as there were authorized double punches every 4-5 laps) since the kids weren’t technically allowed to run. She could barely walk by the end the last lap was recorded. I turned in my puncher while she turned in her lap card and after spending my tickets, we headed home. She took a bath and used her fizzy bombs H gave her for her bday. They did end up walking a few laps together so some sort of change of mind happened.

We rested up while Dave headed home with dinner.

Sunday excitement

Peyton’s team didn’t fare well on Saturday, going 1-2, so they were to play bright and early on Saturday, 8 am. This is also with the time change to take effect. We’d been getting updates from the troop all Saturday long, making sure we knew the kids were doing well and were alive.

They all had smiles, except for the picture of Peyton with a bunch of chickens feeding on her tummy (and later found out they were on her face!)

Brandon had his last opening day ceremonies for Little League, so the boys headed out the door by 845 am. I left shortly after that to head to Marin to pick Peyton up. They were all headed out by 11 am with the troop to eat lunch and get back by 2 pm. Peyton’s team lost the 8 am game, meaning they would play at 11 am. I knew we wouldn’t get there by then, but they were playing a 0-4 team, so I figured they’d have a good chance of winning that game.

I got to SF in 40 minutes, then it took another 40 minutes to get to the ranch. GPS told me “You have arrived” and I most definitely had not. I was in the middle of a one lane road, so I knew that I was not where I was supposed to be. I saw a small sign for the ranch, but it looked like I’d be driving off the cliff if there wasn’t a driveway there. I slowly inched down the gravel road, and there was a sign that said, “SLOW DOWN”. I heeded the sign, and I slowly made my way down. I saw the group of bright shirts, and figured the kids were down there. I didn’t want to “slide into home” as I’d had my car, not the 4 wheel drive there, so I inched down. I parked at the bottom of the hill and found one of the girl scout leaders packing her car up. I saw Peyton’s backpack and I got that in my car. We walked up to the girls, and I found them milking goats! It was what Peyton was waiting for!

Each group got to go, while the other group fed the goats grass. Then, they switched. They each had at least a minute, but some girls would rather feed than milk the goats.

Peyton got to spend lots of time with the goat, milking it. She even asked me if I wanted to try. I did get to try, but it was not unlike when I milked myself, twice, so I let her continue.

I asked her if she wanted to leave, and she was resisting. I didn’t want to cause a scene, so I rolled with it. I ended up staying another 40 minutes or so until the rest of the troop was headed out. It was a very windy road out, and Peyton started to moan. I knew she just needed to go to sleep. I had the AC on, music set, and I told her to just go to sleep since I needed to concentrate on driving. She did just that, and I was able to navigate back to the regular freeway. We headed to Livermore, while I kept an eye out on the game in progress. It was just after 11 am, so the game was underway. It was going to take about 1.5 hours to get there. Closer to the field, I checked the score, and it was 2-8. We were down, and Dave, who was also following from Brandon’s game and later practice, told me to just go home, since we weren’t going to win. I had faith. I was going there anyway. Soon, it was 3-8, then 5-8, and then Peyton’s “walk up song” – “Whatever it takes” by Imagine Dragons came on. I thought of her, and then suddenly, I turned around to her sitting upright in her chair looking at me. I handed her the phone to watch loosely so she wouldn’t get sick. She told me, “It’s bases loaded, and it’s tied, 8-8” Then, her friend got hit, and then was walked, meaning a run was walked in! We were 10 minutes out at that point, so I had Peyton text our mom friend that we were on our way. When she told the coach’s wife that we were coming, the coach heard and asked, “Are you serious?” My friend told the coach, “Come on, it’s Robyn, of course she’s serious.”

When we arrived, the game was already over, and we were moving on to the 2 pm game. It was just before 1 pm, and the girls were going to rest. I warmed Peyton up, by throwing to her, but I didn’t have a glove, so I caught the ball in my bare hands. Another dad offered his glove, but I told him I was a lefty, so he filled in for me to warm her up. I told all the coaches and parents that we were there to support the team, and if they needed her, they could play her. But I understood if they needed to sit her to be fair to the rest of the team. The main coach told me that she would most likely start in the outfield. I totally understood. I didn’t want any of the other families to think that I was showing up just to play her, when they all got up at the crack of dawn to play two games. They were happy though to have some relief, and they said they needed her bat!

She started in right field, true to coach’s word. Second batter up hit it foul, and Peyton ran in from the outfield to chase it down. She caught it with just a bit of room to spare for the out! Glad to see she was awake out there. We got out of the inning, and she was second up to bat. She struck out. She kept a good attitude about it, and shook it off. She went back to right field starting the second inning at defense. The third baseman wasn’t paying attention, and the other coach (last fall’s head coach) called time out. He called Peyton to third base, and then made two more substitutions, sending girls criss-crossing all over the field. Now, she was really called up to the hot corner. She was down and ready to play with each play! It was exciting to see her step in to a newer role, as she had not ever really played third base. She got another at bat, and this time, she walked, stole second, stole third, but then was stranded on third. In the end, the team didn’t pull out the win, but they ended up second in their division. They got medals and a t-shirt for their efforts. The coaches thanked her (and me) for coming.

From there, it was about 415 pm or so. She had her end of the year party at 5 pm. It was going to take longer than that to get there. She was concerned about being late, but we didn’t have any other choice. Dave and Brandon were headed there, so at least we’d have coach representation.

We arrived not too late, and the food was being ordered. It was pizza, and the girls all sat together at a long table. We all ate, and then the coaches did their presentation of gifts to the girls.

Here’s Peyton’s:
and then Brandon’s!
which was a total surprise

He was so appreciative of his gift, he wanted me to email Coach and tell him thanks again.
He got a hoop just like Peyton had won last week at the pizza place.

After dinner, we headed down the street to the yogurt shop, where the girls got to use their gift cards.
