Open House

Tonight was Open House at Brandon’s school. It started at 5:45 pm, and there was an ice cream social afterward. I came home to feed Peyton dinner first, then we headed to school. Dave and Brandon were already at the classroom. Dave had a pile of food stacked up on Brandon’s desk. Brandon was excited to show us his stuff, but even more excited to see Carter and Wyatt in the room. After showing us his stuff, he was eager to see who his third grade teachers may be. We ended up going to the third grade classes to tour there. Dave was impressed how small their writing was, and how detailed their work. Brandon wanted to go to all the classrooms before going to the kindergarten classes with Peyton. Her orientation is coming up, so I wanted to show her Ms Song before next week. Ms Song was happy to see Brandon, and even remembered Peyton’s name. She tried to joke around with Peyton, telling her she knew of a certain big girl that was starting kindergarten soon. Peyton wouldn’t budge, and didn’t talk at all. Ms Song turned her attention back to Brandon, telling him he was growing too tall. hop over to here generico levitra on line If this software manipulation doesn’t work out, you could “brick” your iPhone, leaving it entirely dysfunctional. Ms Song was assured that Peyton would take, given that she knew Brandon was a big talker. We left to eat our dinner on the picnic benches. The twins came over to the kinder classes, too, and Cameron and Leslie looked over at us, and told us we were pros at handling food. I always have Peyton eat dinner at the games (it’s something to do), and I can count of Dave to never let us go hungry. We finished up dinner, and we headed to see how bad the ice cream line was. Because Brandon had gotten trouble earlier in the week, he was skipping ice cream for the book faire that was also happening. The line was so long, and it was a red/white and blue popsicle, so we bypassed it. Neither kid complained too much knowing we would go get books instead. Peyton picked out a book I’d suggested, while Brandon tried to get a book, but ended up with a “Dude Diary”. Dave convinced him to not get the spy book, since it was cheaper online. We went back to our respective cars and met up at home. Dave changed, and he headed out with his second man-date in one week! He was meeting up with Kenny, and Andy, who was visiting from out of town. Never a dull moment around here. The kids got to bed earlier tonight, as Brandon had done much of his homework last night and this morning. Almost done with the week! But not soon enough.

Game Day

Today, Brandon’s team was playing across town. Peyton and I went home first to get her dinner and grab her homework. I knew Brandon was leading off, so I made sure to get there right on time. Sure enough, he batted first. The first two innings are coach-pitch, and Brandon hit the first pitch thrown at him. I wasn’t even ready with the camera, but I think I got most of the at-bat. Peyton did a good job with her homework, then she ate her dinner. That took about 2-3 innings, and then she was happy to sit on my lap and watch more of the game. Brandon’s team was doing really well, until they had to switch to kid-pitch. The other team had a really good pitcher, also named Brandon. At one point, it was Brandon pitching to Brandon. The other team caught notice of it, too. Brandon did pitch a bit, but he was wild. His catcher was talking to him, and I saw Brandon nod, like they do in the big leagues, and then throw a pitch. He did pitch a few strikes, but after walking three, the opposing coach stepped in to relieve. Brandon was then the fielding pitcher, standing beside the coach. There was a foul tip coming back toward our dugout, and Brandon chased it down, stuck his glove out there and made the out to end the inning. It was cute to see his teammates cheer for him, and jump up on him like they do in the pros once they got into the dugout. In the end, we didn’t win, but it is definitely fun to see the team come together to make a few plays here and there. They have improved since the start of the season for sure. During the last inning, Dave asked me to get all of Brandon’s gear out of his car and transfer it to mine. He was taking off for his science meeting, while I was going to take the kids home for dinner and bedtime. Both kids did what they were asked to do, but it was still a late night for us. Brandon has his open house tomorrow night, so I wanted to be sure tomorrow’s homework was done. We stayed up late working on his opinion writing, while Peyton tried to fall asleep. Brandon wasn’t done until 830 pm, and when he thought about it, he said, “But Daddy didn’t give us a hug!” I told him I’d give him two, and that he had to go and finish up. It’s 9 pm, and both are down, but not out. Thursday is no better – we have practice for Peyton that night. This week will fly by before we know it!

Dress

Last week, I wore a dress and boots to work. When I went to pick Peyton up, her girl friends rushed up to me. One said, “I like your boots.” The other said, “I like your dress.” And a third said, “I like your boots and your dress.” While we were walking out, Peyton said, “Maybe you shouldn’t wear a dress and boots anymore. Washington, DC

Dave went out with two of the other coaches from Brandon’s team on Thursday. When he got home, I called Tina for a ride back to her place. Since I was taking her home, I didn’t want my car over there. We ended up back at her place, and then we went to sleep since we had an early day. Our flight was 6 am, so we were leaving Tina’s at 415 am, meaning we were up and at ’em by 4 am. Paul dropped us off at the airport, and we got through security without any problem. Our first flight was the longer of the two, to ATL, with a quick layover before heading out to DC. Tina and I sat on opposite aisle seats, so we each could stretch out our legs, and have easy access in and out, yet still talk to each other. The flight had two crying kids, and that made everything difficult. They weren’t even near us, but it definitely interrupted any sleep I’d hoped to get. I think being a parent, I’m even LESS tolerant of whiny kids. Keep your kids entertained, with whatever means possible. We finally landed in ATL, and we headed to get lunch, even though we were still 3 hours behind on pacific time. Soon enough, we headed to our next gate and boarded right away. This flight was much easier and shorter. Tina and I were split up, but we made friends this way. The person sitting next to me was with a running group, and she was headed to DC for the first time. She had friends with her who worked for KP, too, only they were surgical techs and nurses. Tina and I met up and took a cab to the hotel. It was raining, which we’d expected, but we didn’t need umbrellas since we were under cover most of the time. It wasn’t too cold, but we didn’t stay outside long. We met up with Suong and Pam, who were on the hunt of umbrellas, and they took a a long time to do so. We headed out for a light dinner, and then we went back to the hotel to rest up.  The next day, Pam headed out early to sight see, while Tina, Suong and I slept in until 1030-11am, which was still early for our time zone.  At first, I checked my watch, and it said “7:30”, so I thought we were good on time, but then in my sleepiness, I’d forgotten to add 3 hours.  I figured it out, and started to get ready to start my day.  Soon, we were all up. Tina went to visit a friend, while Suong and I set out for souvenirs for the kids.  We started out with “lunch”, which was a food truck chicken shwarma.  We ate that at Capitol mall before heading over to the Natural History museum, and later the air and space museum.  I’m the boring mom who brought back books for their gifts.  I got a book on Cherry Blossoms for Peyton, and then a book on dinosaurs and then a Pearl Harbor book for Brandon.  Suong wanted a strawberry good humor bar, while I picked a hand scooped ice cream truck.  The ice cream was good, but it was almost a 30 minute wait.  We then headed to see the MLK “new kid on the block” memorial.  We met Tina there, who was done with lunch with her friend by then.  We headed over to our reservations for dinner and “carb loading”.  Pam was running late, but it didn’t hold up our reservation.  Tina, Suong and Pam all had pasta, while I had chicken pot pie with biscuits instead of traditional crust.  We all enjoyed dinner (and even agreed to go back the next night for the “real food”), and then we headed back for a quick dip in the jacuzzi.  It helped relax us, and then we tried to go to sleep for an early wake up call, by 540 am.  The race started at 7 am, and we were just upstairs from the start.  We got our clothes ready to go, and then everyone turned in for a fitful night of sleep. No one could sleep well, which is usually the case for me, but I had three other people in the room.  We all got up, groggy, when the alarms went off.  We headed down as planned, and got into our corral.  We all started in the same one, 9-9:30 pace, which is a bit faster than my usual pace, but it was better than dodging those who were walking, like they would behind us.  Pam and Tina were probably about that pace, but definitely not for Suong and me.  We all split up during the race, but we had plans to meet up after.  The race went well for me, having no potty needs and only stopping for water once.  I took a cliff shot to go, and ate that, and then collected chocolate for later.  I did have to stop to tie my shoe once, but I recovered from that.  I saw a few people stop that were cramping up, and I couldn’t bare to watch. I didn’t want to be swayed by power of suggestion, for fear I’d cramp, too.  I saw one girl vomiting the yellow hydration fluid (yuck), and I had to turn away, too.  There were some inspirational messages about fighting cancer along the way, and that got me all choked up. The sights of the monuments were also breath-taking.  The sun was out in full force, right off the bat, something different from the SF race, which is held in October.  I did run a little bit with my eyes closed, since the sun was so bright. I peeked every once in awhile to make sure I didn’t fall asleep or run into anyone.  I’d had half a cup of coffee before starting the race, so that did help keep me awake.  I finished the race, and I gathered my finisher’s goodies before meeting up with Tina and Joyce.  It took me awhile to meet up with Suong, but I’d found Pam by accident.  We hung out until she left to take her shower first.  Suong was getting her stuff about 10 minutes behind me. After everyone took showers, we headed in two different directions for lunch. Tina went off with her high school friend, while Suong, Pam and I tried this place Pam went to for dinner on her own.  We were getting brunch, so it was still a different experience.  It was called Busboys and Poets, and it was a bookstore/cafe, with a Berkeley vibe to it.  I was so hungry, I got an egg dish and a granola with yogurt.  There wasn’t as much food at the finish line as in other races, so I hadn’t really eaten as much as I normally would by that time.  By this time, we’d texted back to Dave to find out our times.  My official time was 2:08:10.  This beats my last fastest race (the Wine and Dine -2:20:37) by almost 13 minutes!  I was so surprised.  I hadn’t been trying to beat my time by that much, but I figured the 1) caffeine, 2) not stopping as much for water, and 3) training faster to be done with the gym time faster probably all accounted for the improved time.  The only “long” run I’d done prior to the race was with Brandon last week.

After a big brunch, we headed back for naps.  Tina joined us in the room after she was done, too.  After not sleeping well at night, this was much-needed.  We got up around the same time to head to the Capitol mall for a post-race picture. We were all showered up and wearing our finisher’s shirts, but the sun was not cooperating with us.  We had bad lighting, but we took the picture anyway.  We ended up going back to the restaurant from the previous night to try the “down home” food.  This time, we ordered the chicken and waffles, bruschetta, and Suong had the same.  We followed up with red velvet cake to celebrate.  We then headed back to the hotel to pack up. I went to visit a high school friend, from the class below me, who had run the race and was staying in the hotel, too.  We chatted with her roommate for about 30 minutes before I left to get ready.  Tina and I were leaving again on the 6 am flight, and we were going to have to get up by 4 am.  Brutal, since I had no idea what time zone my body was on.

Today, we got up and out of the room just as planned. The taxi ride over was quick, and we checked our bags this time.  We hadn’t on the way over for fear our running stuff wouldn’t make it to us.  Now that the race was over, I didn’t want to lug my bags through the connecting flight.  There were no babies crying on either flight, and everything went smoothly.  We did have a longer layover, 3 hours, so we continued to walk around to ease sore muscles.  They seem to stiffen up more when seated for a long time.  I don’t feel as badly in races with hills, but I’m still a bit sore.  We arrived on time, and Dave picked us up as planned.  But instead of driving back to work, he headed home with us.  He had practice for Brandon, so it wouldn’t make sense to take the train or he’d miss it.  We dropped Tina off, then I got busy unpacking before heading to get Brandon.  I dropped him off to do homework, then went to get Peyton.  When she saw me, she was in circle time.  She whispered, “You ARE here today!”  like she didn’t think it would happen.  She had a big smile on her face. I asked her if she missed me as we were walking out, and she got a little sad and said, “Yes.”  I told her about the books I had at home, and she was excited to read them. I had to stop at the store first for food, then we headed home as Brandon and Dave were leaving for practice.  She did some homework I found for her, as none was assigned, then she proceeded to read the whole Cherry Blossom book to me.  After the first 3-4 pages, she realized it was a poem and the words rhymed.  She didn’t read the smaller print, only the riddles guessing what kind of animal was among the Cherry Blossoms.  She said, “It’s too hard,” though I think she could have gotten through it.  After she ate dinner, we walked over to the practice for exercise.  She was happy to walk, and she did just fine while we riddled the rides AND did math!  I was surprised she wanted practice her math facts.  Next week is orientation, so maybe she’s honing her skills.  The kids got to bed by 8 pm, after Brandon did some homework for tomorrow, since he has a game again. The week has moved right along, and I hope to not feel as sore tomorrow, but I’m not sure that will be the case.  Here are the pictures (lots) that we took!

While we were heading back in the house from me picking her up, Peyton asked, “Is that a new necklace?”  She noticed right away!  I told her that was what I’d “won”.  Brandon asked if I won, too, and when I told him I didn’t, he said, “You never win!”  I told him I won for myself because I finished, and also because I got my necklace.  Needless to say, he wasn’t impressed.  I did miss two doubles that Brandon had hit, line drives out to center field.  Peyton did a good job, too, and she told me she caught a pop fly at third, but actually, Dave said she fielded a grounder.

Dave learned that Peyton doesn’t like flan.  He gave her some to try, and she told him she didn’t like it.  We didn’t think the kids didn’t like any desserts.  Brandon polished his off no problem.

Double Trouble

Today, both kids had practice. I picked Peyton up and brought her home just as Dave was backing out. I flagged him down, and I dumped Peyton off, just stopping long enough to go potty. I quickly changed, then headed to get Brandon at CDC. I had his pile of clothes in my car, from Dave, and he agreeably changed his clothes at school. At first, he wanted to change at home, but I told him we were there to stay. I got him to his field with 5 minutes to spare. I stood between both backstops to watch kids. Later, I played a little catch with Kai, then we played hot potato. I went back to help with managing kids behind the backstop. It makes me nervous when the kids have bats around each other. Peyton was not doing a good job of listening,so I was going to take her home, when she decided she was ready. When Dave was done, then Coach Tom took both Brandon’s to take some batting practice. Tom was throwing faster balls at him, and Brandon was ripping them! He was so happy to hit one over Dave’s head, which was effectively the little kid outfield. He’s really getting his timing down! After some time watching Brandon, I decided to take Peyton home. She needed a bath and to get a head start on dinner. It’s so difficult when the kids both have practice, especially as both had homework tonight. Brandon helped himself out by doing his math at school. Dave dropped Brandon off by 715 pm, and then headed out for Coaches’ Night Out. They were meeting up for pizza and beer. They were all very excited! I’ll wait for his return, then call Tina for a ride overnight for us to get to the airport in the city by 6 am! I already put Peyton to bed, but Brandon is still reading his 20 minutes. I’ve already told them both where I’ll be going, and that I’ll be back on Monday and will miss them very much. Peyton gave me a long, hug goodnight. I think it was half-stalling, and half-meaningful. We’ll see what Brandon does when it’s his turn to go to sleep.

Game Day

Dave took our guests to the airport today, and he returned to his “normal” day job. He did help by taking Brandon to school one last time. I went about my day, and then I left to get Peyton. We hurried home, then I got Peyton some dinner, as well as gathered my leftover lunch, since we got lunch at work. We arrived after the visitor (us) ups. I missed Brandon’s first at-bat. I did get the second, where he was safe at first. The first two innings were coach-pitch, and then it was kid-pitch. Nathan pitched inning #3 and #4, and then after 47 pitches, my boy was called up to the plate! Again, nerve-wracking! Especially when his arm is not the most accurate. I think he even balked, but he doesn’t know what that is 🙂  He pitched out of the inning, but we lost the game by 3 runs. This is an improvement over this team, but we fought a good fight. Brandon almost cried when the coach reamed him for a missed play at first. But, he did catch a pop fly, which he’s been working on! Actually both Brandon’s caught pop flies today. There were some highlights, even though it was a loss. The team is definitely working things out, and they definitely have improved!

Peyton was with me for only the first few innings, but after she was done with her dinner, she was gone. She was having fun with Alana and Kai playing tag.  Peyton saw a teammate, and she told me she said hi.  They were hanging out for a bit, and his mom came over to say hi to us.  Peyton is definitely “coming out of her shell” as Coach Tom has observed.  Glad she was able to do this via baseball!

Round #2; Reverse

Today, I took Peyton in the morning, while Dave took Brandon to school before going back to get our guests for round #2. Since Dave wasn’t sure if he needed to go out again after Brandon’s practice, so he suggested that I do my running right after work. I packed my gym bag, but then forgot it on the couch when I left. I asked Dave to bring it to Julie’s to see if he could intercept her, but that didn’t work, so he went to MA to bring it to Peyton’s school. He didn’t tell anyone about it, so I called school later to inform them. I didn’t want them to think it was a suspicious package, especially since my ipod was in there! I went about my day, meeting my boss’ boss, which was informal, but still a change in the routine. I left right after 4pm to get Peyton. The teacher reminded me about the bag (thankfully!), and then we headed off to the gym. Peyton was so excited that she was able to go to the club again. It’s such a treat for them! I ran 4 miles, then showered up before going back to get her. I was doing my usual routine, and really had to concentrate to make sure I went BACK to get Peyton! She’s not part of my routine, and I could have easily seen myself going back home without her only to realize I’d missed something. We came home and our guests were relaxing watching TV in their room. Brandon and Dave were at practice. Peyton hadn’t met them yet, but Mark came out to say hi. Peyton did not. Calista then came out, and again, Peyton just stared at them. But she was perfectly fine talking to me, and acting her usual self. We did a few addition and subtraction pages, and again, no tears. I cleaned up everything from lunch, and then Peyton took a bath. I didn’t know what was ours in the refrigerator to eat, and Dave was supposed to have brought back some yumminess for us, I held out. The boys got home by 7pm, and then the silence of the house disappeared. It was hustle and bustle until finally, homework was done by 8:30 pm. Dave and Mark went out for round #2.5/3. They spent most of their day on the east bay, going to the Farmer’s market, getting crusty bread, and doing more tasting. I had half a chicken sandwich, and some of the bread along with the cheese from yesterday. I’m starting to pack more of my clothes for my departure on Friday. Actually, I’ll be staying over at a friend’s house Thursday night, since our flight is at 6 am!! Luckily, her BF is going to take us to the airport, and Dave is going to pick us up before returning to work himself. I’ll drive us back home, and then go get him later at the train.

While Peyton was throwing her trash away, she did something, which I didn’t see. Dave started laughing, and said, “Oh my goodness!” He waited for her to leave before re-enacting what she’d done. He said she lifted up the lid, and then did a reverse dunk of her trash. He was in disbelief. I keep telling him he needs to hone his sporting efforts on her! Or send her to clown school. Either way.

The Guests

I picked up Peyton and Brandon today as we have out of town guests that Dave is showing around. They are complete strangers to us, but we are helping out friends who have recently hired this chef that is touring the US “tasting” different cities throughout. Dave was chosen as the point person for SF, so he took a day off of work to play host to our guests. Brandon and Peyton did well at dinner, and bathed themselves while the other did homework. I had to find homework for Peyton since she had asked for it and wasn’t assigned any at school today. She was working again on math, and this time, she proudly told me, “I didn’t cry even!” She did a much better job, and she is slowly getting the hang of it. I had Brandon read an online book tonight, since he has practice and a game the other two nights. He agreed, and then we even worked on his baseball paper that he has to write about for Coach Tom who assigned it over spring break. He agreed to do that as I told him he may be the only one who completes it (Dave didn’t even want to have him finish). I even told him he may get on the reward board for getting it done. He was excited about it, and he wrote it pretty quickly. Of course, he talked about the SF/LA game, and the game he watched happened to be one that SF won! It was good to see him put that in print. Lights were out by 8 pm, but the kids weren’t out until 9pm. It didn’t help that Dave returned home by 845 pm, and Brandon asked for a hug. I asked him how he knew Dave was home, and he said, “Because I see the guests coming into our home.” Peyton was still up, too, and she said, “The guests are here?!” They get so excited when we have people over, it’s ridiculous.

Tow

The other day, there were signs by CDC about a tow zone. I had to remind the kids that we had to park on the block before CDC, and Peyton had to come with us. Normally, she stays in the car, while I do the drop-off. She asked me why again, and I told her about the tow zone. By that time, we were at school. I find it fascinating when they can have their own meaningful conversations.
