Cherry Sunday

Today, I took the kids to walk for cherry pancakes. The local cherry stand was having a pancake breakfast. I mapped my route, and chose to walk through the park. Dave didn’t want to walk for cherries, so I headed out with them an hour before breakfast started. The kids saw the structure, and Brandon wanted to play, since he didn’t get to last week when he was at practice. I told them we could come back on the way home since we were on a mission. Both kids tested out their new sandals that Michelle had given me a head’s up on. Both were happy with the color selection I’d made for them. We got there in plenty of time, and fortunately, they were serving them a little early. The lady selling the pancakes poured the syrup. I asked for a little!

After we ate our pancake (I didn’t have cash to buy more), we headed to TJ’s where I got fruit. I’d brought some carry bags, which each kid held for me, then I carried it back to the park. The kids tried food there, but Peyton wasn’t that excited about the Italian salad. Brandon, of course, loved it. I let them play in the park, and Peyton narrowly missed getting kicked in the back of the head since she didn’t listen to me to walk out away from the swings. I think it scared the dad pushing his daughter more than anything. Peyton was clueless. She and Brandon started racing up the structure, when Peyton’s hands both came off the rungs of the ladder. She fell off, probably 5 feet off the ground, and hit her leg against the climbing wall. She landed on her arm, and I was more worried she’d break her arm, but it was still her doing since she was not looking straight ahead of her. I wasn’t as sympathetic as I probably should have been. He said he can only do two or three problems per sheet. But they’re right when he does it that was, so I told him it was ok.

Then both were sent to bed without complaints. Even though she slept earlier today, Peyton is still sound asleep! She was in need to catch up since she got only a mini-nap yesterday.

Baseball Saturday

We started our morning early, as usual. Brandon got a haircut, while I got Peyton ready to go for the day. She got to practice her song for a few times, then I got her breakfast. Dave and Brandon went to the field early for prep. Peyton and I walked, and she asked to play math games. She wanted me to give her word problems. But they wanted to do face painting, so I recommended she change so as not to get Misha’s clothes dirty. The girls migrated back and started using stencils to paint each other’s arms. Sydney had a bday party to go to, so she left a bit earlier, while I had no reason to pull Peyton, so I let her play until Neha had to leave. We all left together, and I didn’t get any complaints. We came home and had a quiet evening watching what else…baseball! UCLA is in contention for the CWS. And the softball team was battling it out, too.

Two-fer

I knew Peyton was getting the award today, and I hoped that Brandon would, but an email was never sent to us as Peyton’s teacher had sent. But Brandon has a sub now, so I was hoping it was because of that that we didn’t get anything.

I later taught in Peyton’s class for their final art project. That’s how I was able to “sneak” a big camera to school without it looking weird. Brandon’s sub apologized for not notifying us. While I was leaving Peyton’s class, I told her I wouldn’t be able to attend the music class that she’d wanted me to since the parents weren’t invited. She looked a bit sad, but she kept it together. I told her she could perform for me later today if she wanted. But she didn’t really want to take me up on my offer.

School Goings-On

This morning, I hung around home like a Monday and Wednesday, and it threw the kids off, even though I told them that I would be home. I left for school when Dave dropped them off. I headed to the multi while Dave hung out with the kids. The teachers were serving the volunteers breakfast. They had yummy berries, muffins, cut into quarters, and bagels. I got some fruit and a muffin quarter and sat down with some decaf. I felt like a little kid in a big school sitting alone, but soon I had friends join me. The program started with the Chorus doing a performance, then the teachers sang a song that was written by one of the teachers to a Bee Gees song. Then, the PTA took over and thanked the various volunteers. A slide show was watched, and Dave made it in there! He was in action, putting signs up at walk a thon. Gifts were given to all volunteers, with improved prizes as the numbers increased. All hours were self-reported, and Dave got a decorated cookie, while I got a serving spoon and bee measuring spoon. (The theme was “You’re the Bee’s Knees”)

The program was done just after 9 am, and then I headed to work. I worked the rest of my shift, then headed out by 2 pm to go pick up the kids again. We headed to piano, where the teacher only wanted to work on the performance pieces. Brandon surprised us by memorizing his piece!

He was so far behind where he should have been just a week ago, but we hammered it out over the past week, and now it sounds so much better! Ms M thought Brandon had memorized it, and then she took the music away and he was still able to play! Maybe piano will help his memory (and hopefully typing) as I believed it did with me! Maybe he’ll get an appreciation of music along the way, but that’s a stretch 🙂

I forgot to record Peyton, since she’d gone first. But she didn’t do as well as she had at home. She didn’t want to take a bow when I was watching! I had to turn around, then she would. Brandon definitely has a “I don’t care” attitude, which serves him well for this purpose. Peyton cares too much, and Ms. M said if she does mess up, it’s okay and to move on. Peyton has a game face on when she’s playing, so she’s trying to lighten her up a bit. I’m excited to see how the recital goes!

We chatted until it was time to pick up the kids. Both kids wanted to go home with daddy, so I got a peaceful ride home. We had a later than usual dinner, then Peyton went to bed after bath. Brandon wanted to stay up and do more math. I let him, and I knew he was stalling for bed. But it was better that he do something with me than lying in bed awake. He was more receptive than the earlier tantrum. He ended up staying up until 9 pm, and he was getting it done without complaint! He showed me his “piano”

Practicing

I wanted to make sure Peyton got some bike riding in today. She only recently got up last year in the summer and with her race coming up, I wanted to get her comfortable. This morning, she woke up and asked to do more of the puzzle. She got some pieces together before returning to her room to read. When I got up, she was happy to help me again. After a few more pieces, she agreed to practice piano. Brandon followed then breakfast was served. We went back to the puzzle before heading out to the store. When we came back, Brandon and Dave had left. They went to eat lunch and then practice with just the two of them. I took Peyton to the school nearby to ride. I wanted to make sure she could ride for at least 10 minutes straight. I set the timer and she did laps over and over. She passed ten minutes and kept going with some stops for water. You could see the smile under her face shield on her helmet as she rode by. I told her she could stay for thirty minutes and by her five minute warning, she said she was done. We went home to switch with Brandon. He was excited at first, then decided after putting his knee pads and helmet on that he didn’t want to go. He didn’t want to leave daddy at home. So we went back inside. Later, Dave took Peyton for baseball practice. When she got home, she told me all about the people at the field that were there. She said the Twins coach asked her her name and grade. She said he told her she was a good hitter (she was in the batting cages). We ate dinner before the basketball game started, then both kids raced up to watch with me. Dave was watching the LA baseball game. The kids were a bit interested in that game, but stayed with me.
