Security Camera

Dave noticed some odd activity outside our house over the weekend, and that prompted him to get a security camera to monitor the front of our house. A guy approached him while he was washing the car, and Peyton was outside. He said he was scouting out locations for a commercial, and was taking photos. Our garage was wide open, and Dave just had a funny feeling. The non-urgent police line also said it sounded suspicious, but the person had to be caught in the act before anything could be done. So, he set up a camera in Brandon’s room, to overlook our front area. I didn’t know what was going on, as I was downstairs, but Brandon told us something was clicking in his room. Dave told me to come in to the office to look at the remote cam, and then we looked around Brandon’s room. I went in to Brandon’s room to give him a hug. Dave couldn’t see him on the camera because he’d told him to lie down (and he listened!). While I was in his room, Brandon said, “I’m going to put my head over there (pointing to the foot of his bed). That thing is plugged in, and it’s looking at me (then pointing to the camera on his floor).” I hope we don’t make Brandon paranoid either.

Good Influence!

Being around his cousins is a good influence for Brandon. He was listening right away over the weekend, jumping up to put away his clothes, towel, and toys. It wasn’t the usual 3 times to remind him about something, but he’d do it when first asked. He knew the alternative would be missing out on fun time with the others if he didn’t make good choices. This carried on to the next day, on Monday, when he brought home a PURPLE card! Here’s proof:

He earned it for studying quietly. However, his purpleness seemed to end right as school did, as at CDC, he was told to put on sunblock, and he shouted back at the teacher, “You’re not the boss of me!” Not sure where he got that one, but Dave told me not to point fingers. Mei Mei

Today, Peyton was very excited to see Vivian and her little sister. I asked Peyton what Vivian’s little sister’s name was, and she said, “It’s ‘Mei Mei’.” I told her, “Are you sure? Brandon’s Wish

Today, Brandon told us he can’t wait to go to Hawaii. I asked him what he wants there. He said, “I can’t wait to bask in the sun with my coconut.” (He’s already been told he can eat a coconut when we are there). Teacher Peyton

While the big kids were engaged in flash cards, Peyton made it a point to get her BrainQuest cards out for she and Penelope. Since Peyton has seen most of the cards, she was reading them to Penelope. She sounded so teacher-ly, asking her to provide the answer to the card’s question. I think it was _est (with a picture of a vest). She “instructed” Penelope to provide the first letter of the word. Then, she was sounding out the letter, “Vah, vah…” and when Penelope said, “Vee,” Peyton said, “Good job!” again, in a very teacher-ly voice. She is motivated to learn Spanish! I recently ordered her some Spanish flash cards, and hopefully they will arrive shortly. In the car today, she asked me to give her numbers in Spanish, and then she has self-imposed to determine whether they are odd or even. It is a challenge for me now, to remember all the numbers up to 100, but she is definitely getting it! I usually look at road signs, or license plate numbers to help me make up the numbers. Always a good time in the car…

A Weekend with the Cousins

Everyone got up about the same time on Saturday to watch some early morning cartoons. We all got ready to go to Brandon’s game. Dave and Brandon took off earlier to warm up and get there for practice, while the rest of us walked. It was a walk that Peyton’s complained about before, but she walked with Abby, holding her hand, and there were no complaints. I had Penelope’s hand, and she didn’t complain either! We got to the game, and Brandon was already on third base. The younger girls went off to the park with Meg, while Jeff, Abby and I watched the game. I’d brought snacks and water, but they were all pre-occupied and didn’t need them. After about two innings, Abby and Jeff went to the park, then Jeff came back to watch the third inning. Brandon was a bit nervous, but I think he did okay. After the game, we headed back on foot, while Dave and Brandon drove ahead. He had changed by the time we walked back, and then we headed out for lunch. The kids all sat together, while the adults all sat on the other side of the table. We returned home, and the younger two took naps, while the older two played together quietly with Creationary. Then, Peyton woke up, after only 30 minutes, and I tried to get her to go back to sleep. She rested for another 45 minutes or so, before she was done. Then, we came back down and played Scrabble and Monopoly Juniors. Penelope joined us after her nap. Dave had finished up his table just the week before, finishing it off with an umbrella. He was setting up for an evening dinner al fresco, while the kids all played inside. While Dave was finishing up cooking, Meg and I then ran to the store with the younger two, in search of some dessert and a car seat for Abby. We came back and had turkey burgers, corn and sweet potatoes. After dinner, the kids all were bathed, and then had either a mango or blueberry popsicle. Dave had to take Jeff up to his hotel for the conference, while Meg and I winded down and talked while the kids all slept. Fortunately, the kids all go to bed around the same time, which makes for a nice, quiet evenings. The adults are able to sit and chat, and the siblings drank wine (the night before anyway).
This morning, we headed to a popular restaurant for brunch. Dave’s always been to the bakery side, but not to the cafe side. We arrived about 5 minutes before opening, and the place was getting packed with patrons! Luckily, I’d made a reservation, and we were seated fairly quickly. After breakfast, Meg and the girls were headed to a family friend’s house, while we headed home. Brandon and Dave left soon after to get a birthday present and card for Nico, then went to his birthday party at a gym nearby. While they were out, Peyton and I took a nap.

Brandon had pizza and ice cream, and came back with some goodies. Dave started washing his car, while the kids played a video game together. We finally figured out that two people can play the game at once, though they are tethered together. But it was cute to see the two working together, and giving each other high fives when they passed something together. Peyton soon tired of the game, and went outside with Dave, while I played with Brandon. She did some bubbles outside, and then came in for dinner. After dinner, Dave wanted to go out and look for a security camera. Today, there was someone taking pictures, apparently, “scouting for a commercial” but Dave didn’t like the look of it all. After that, we headed to get some gelato. The kids split a pear and tangerine sorbet, while Dave and I split a green tea and TCHO chocolate scoop. The kids went down to bed a little later than usual, but hopefully will not have problems starting the week tomorrow. Looks like the countdown to summer is on, as we have our next playdate with the cousins planned in July!

Eagle Eye

Peyton and Brandon’s cousins came into town today, and the kids were SO excited! Both kids ran up to their rooms, and were eager to show their cousins their rooms. Actually, both kids wanted to show their cousins how CLEAN their house and rooms were. After settling in a bit, we all went out to eat. We ordered our food, and I found us a table that would accommodate 8 of us. I grabbed one table, and saw that the one single man was about to leave. I smiled, and thanked him. He commented about what a big family we had, seeing that we’d need two tables. He grabbed his keys, and turned to leave. Shortly thereafter, he returned, looking for his keys. I did mention to him that I’d remembered him taking the keys. He searched all his pockets, while I was looking at our bench area just in case. We looked under the table, too. But, then Brandon looked across the bar area and said, “Are they over there?” The waitress bent down and picked up some keys, which were at least two tables away from us, and the man said, “Yes, those are my keys!” He promptly pulled out a dollar and handed it to Brandon, who had a huge smile on his face! I turned around, and Peyton had sunk down in her seat, with her face buried in her hands. I suspected I knew the reason, but she wouldn’t talk to me to tell me. She recovered, but not without some drama. Later, as I gave her a bath, I asked her why she was crying at the table. She just looked at me with big eyes, and didn’t respond. I pushed her a little more, then she said, “I wanted to find the keys,” and then started to cry again. I gave her a big hug, and explained to her that not everyone can win every time. She did give her best effort, but Brandon just got it first. Tomorrow, we’re all going to watch Brandon’s game. Brandon seemed a bit shy about the fact that everyone would be watching him, but I told him to just play his game. He’d been practicing with Dave earlier today, so hopefully he can give them a good show!

Nightmares; Poor Brandon

Dave said that Peyton came into the room two nights ago, at 3 am, whining about “a fish is poking me!” Dave just told her to go back to sleep, and she agreed. He hadn’t had a chance to ask her until today. He just asked, “Why did you come into the room the other night?” Peyton knew exactly what he was talking about, and said, “The fish was poking me. I was dreaming!” She remembered it though. And was able to have a good laugh at it. I thought it was funny, but since it was 3 am, Dave did not.
Peyton wrapped her arms around me, and said, “I’m going to give you a big kiss for loving me.” It was very sweet, only she’d just eaten, and her mouth had food all over it. Poor Brandon was the last kid at school today. Dave left work at 440pm, 10 minutes later than he told me he would, and got to school at 602 pm. We were having a fundraiser for baseball, so I was meeting Dave at the restaurant. I’d already gotten our food, and he only told me about him not being there at 557 pm (10 hours and 40 something minutes after I’d dropped him off this morning). So after 7 years of being in “the daycare/childcare system”, we had to pay a fine. Tomorrow, I will be in charge of pick up for both, so hopefully it won’t be on me.

Observations

Peyton told us that Ms Maria was back. When I asked her why, she said, “Because Mary wanted to come back to school.” Brandon heard us talking and said, “Well, looks like they had the going away party for no reason then.”

Then, Peyton’s teacher welcomed me back, and she asked if the conference was in Hawaii, as this is what Peyton told her. I told her, no, it wasn’t that exciting. I asked Dave if she missed me, and he said she did say, “I want Mommy, I want Mommy, I want Mommy” on Friday sometime (Dave didn’t remember when it happened, he thinks maybe during the day). But he said she was joking, and not sad about it. I think she knew I was gone.

She was puzzled when I picked her up on Thursday, as she said, “I thought you were going to a conference.” I told her that I’d be leaving that night, and that I was there to pick her up one last time.

She was the one who ran up to me this afternoon upon my return. She was so excited to see me. Brandon looked up from his book, but didn’t really care that much. He was on his way to baseball practice, and out the door with Dave when I arrived. I had to move the car, but there were no seats in the car, so I just threw her in the backseat while I moved into the garage. She was so excited to buckle up like a big girl. She sat there while I emptied the car, one bag at a time, and she watched me, buckled up the whole time. I asked her if she was ready to, and then she jumped down. Dave told me that she dropped her apples on the floor this morning, and Dave told her to throw them away. She whined about it, and then Brandon handed her one of his. Two greens. I mentioned to him that we’ll have to plan for his homework and absence when he is gone next month. He agreed, and knew exactly where we were going!
