Wedding day and beyond

After we left the swap meet, we headed back to the hotel. The kids were put down for a nap, and nap they did! Both were out for at least an hour, but due to kona coffee, Dave and I were wide awake. And not making any noise, so just staring at each other, trying to fall asleep. I was on the bed with Peyton, with her draped over me, while I told Dave NOT to disrupt Brandon by sitting on his bed. Finally, they woke up and we changed them for the wedding. We were going to stop for our second day of shave ice, but the line was too long. We didn’t want to be late, so we headed to Foodland instead for poke in the car. Unglamourous, but oh so yummy. The wedding was about an hour long, and the kids did reasonably well without any outside entertainment. Peyton enjoyed the ceremony, while we tried to stop Brandon from chanting and humming. When the wedding was over, we headed for some shopping, and we eventually made our way to the reception. Dave was worried about being there early, but apparently, he knows nothing about island time. We did get the poke though..and other appetizers that were waiting for the guests to arrive. We hung out and tried to make sure the kids didn’t knock over the wedding cake in the middle of the floor. We sat right by the slide show which was used to introduce the couple. Soon, the bride and groom took the stage for their first dance, with the groom serenading his wife! The kids lasted the whole wedding, longer than their grandparents. We stayed until the end where the bridal party came out and did a bollywood routine. We headed to our hotel to check in, with both kids passed out in the back. We got checked in, and then it was off to bed.

On Sunday morning, the kids woke up by 645 am, about an hour later than the day before. We were up and caffeinated before the pools opened up. We headed to the water slides, doing both the body slide and the inner tubes. Brandon preferred the lazy river, though he was not lazy at all. He was making friends, or enemies, whichever way you look at it. He found some entertainment in dodging tubes and swimming under people. I just hope he wasn’t too annoying. We headed to the beach, where the kids had fun in the sand. We perched some chairs right in front of them and watched by the shore. I was contemplating paddleboarding, but I didn’t want to commit for the hour. Soon, Peyton asked if we could try, so I made the move. I thought we could get one right away, but it turns out we were given a transponder to wait, like at restaurants. The buzzer didn’t go off for awhile, so I went to check. They told me 45 minutes. I was afraid I’d lose my nerve in that time, but at high noon, we were paged! We walked over to get our life vests on and were given instructions. I took Peyton out, and I was able to get the nerve to stand. And stand I did! Then, Peyton wanted to give it a shot. So I sat, and she got up. And she did great until she plunged herself off into the ocean. I grabbed on to her vest, while she kept a hand on the oar. She climbed back up with a little help, and she gave me the oar to finish up. She only wanted to get the water out of her eyes, and that took a few seconds before she asked to get up again. She got back up and did a great job. I then headed back to shore to give Brandon a shot at it. He was too wiggly, but he was able to get up, too. And he didn’t fall in! I thought he was going to make us fall in, but we did keep ourselves upright. Soon, Dave was pointing to himself to try it. He wanted a few minutes to give it a shot. Peyton switched back on to his front while he gave it a go. He was gun shy and paddled around on his knees for awhile, then when I put the camera away, he got his nerve up. And rocked back and forth until they both went for a dip in the drink! They both got back up again, and then he headed back to change with me. I went again with Peyton and we finished up our hour. She wanted me to paddle, and commented, “We go faster when you paddle!” I followed a fish around for her to see, and when I asked her to touch the buoy, she told me we shouldn’t because that was the outer barrier. She wanted to follow the rules closely. We headed back in short of our full hour, since we were given a 10 minute warning. Peyton doesn’t like being given a timer, so she preferred to call it in early before being asked to go back. Glad we had a mostly first successful go at it. We went back up to the resort for lunch and shave ice, then headed back into the slides and lazy river to round out our afternoon. Brandon broke off from us when we went on the slides and he went to the river. He found the friends from the beach. Peyton said she met a kid at the beach. I asked her how she knew his name, and she told me, “I asked him.” I asked her if the kid asked her first for her name, and she said, “No, I just asked him first, and then I told him my name.” So, they don’t introduce their friends to each other, like at birthday parties, but they will meet random people at the beach. Brandon was playing with a pair of brothers when Dave met up with him. Peyton and I were already showered when they came back. We were meeting up with Emily who was coming from in town. We had some appetizers and drinks back at the bar, then we walked Emily back to her car. We headed to the Starlight Hui, a hula/luau/cultural show. We were given mats to lie down on, and Brandon did that literally. We told him just to go back to the room. We gave him his key, and he headed back to the room. We stayed for about 45 minutes, but didn’t stay for the Disney character portion of it. Peyton didn’t want to take pictures with the characters, but she did offer to take MY picture with the characters. Uh, no. We headed back to the hotel, and Dave’s key didn’t work. We scrambled for the other two keys, and by the time we got one out, our door was opened for us. Brandon was there! I was thinking either 1) he wouldn’t be there (bad), 2) he’d have eaten all our food, or 3) he’d be asleep. His only missive was to brush his teeth. We both asked him if he had. Then, I took it a step further and asked him if he’d found the room okay. He said, “Not really. I got lost, and had to ask someone. But they weren’t that helpful, because I asked them for 273, and they just told me it was on the 2nd floor.” Then, he said he was in the different side of the hotel, but eventually found it. He was able to look out our balcony at the show, so he was looking for us. He knew the show was still going on, but he knew where we’d be. He was watching basketball on tv. I imagined him just watching cartoons. But before we even brushed up, he was sound asleep. He was super tired, but just waiting for us to come back first, I think to sleep peacefully. We all called it a night, given we had a full day in the sun.

In the morning, Dave got us up to head to the pool. We waited about 30 minutes, were the second in line for towels, and reserved some chairs. We did another 3 runs for the slides, and did a little lazy river-ing. Again, Peyton and I showered up first, then Dave went to find Brandon again, to shower them up. We then headed to another shave ice before we headed back to the airport. We were already missing hawaii and we hadn’t even left yet. We had some spam for the road, too. The flight back over was shorter, but we still arrived quite late. The kids didn’t end up going to bed until after 10 pm, and I had an early shift this morning. We all made it to where we needed to be. Dave said they woke up on their own, which was pretty amazing. Today was a long afternoon, with baseball and softball practices. Peyton’s lasted 2.5 hours, while Brandon’s was about 1.5 hours. We’re headed into tourney weekend for Peyton, her first, so we’ll be busy with that. We’re also wrapping up the school year…

Kama’aina

We woke up by 530 am. Better than I expected.  We got ready for breakfast and went to the same restaurant my parents went to yesterday.  Peyton and I split an omelette and guava pancakes that came with it. Brandon had some French toast and eggs.  Dave had curry loco moco.  My parents split an eggs Benedict.  When we got the bill, we got the Kama’aina discount of 10% off.  Dave is convinced it was because of him and his HIC shirt.  I told him he’s not dark enough.   He claims he is because of baseball.  He just can’t lift up his sleeves.

We then headed to the swap meet to get some souvenirs.  Luckily it was early since it was getting hot.  We cooled off with lots of fruit – mangoes, pineapples and an new variety of apple for us – mountain apple.  Brandon had a coconut:

First day

We dropped the kids off at school and waited through flag salute.  Everyone thought we were there to watch our kid(s) accept an award. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.  But reasonable conclusion since we’re never on campus at the same time.  We then went for coffee and a slice of poppy coffee cake.  Well, the coffee made it to us but Dave left the cake on the roof top.  And drove off.  We went back to school to check the kids out.  We then headed to the airport.  Peyton and I were dropped off first then Dave and Brandon got a ride from a coworker. I lead us to the correct security We went through security, and one TSA lady was asking the other about getting a softball team together.  Peyton’s ears perked up, and her eyes got wide. As we waited for our stuff, I turned to the agent and told her what Peyton had done. The Tsa agent looked at her and said, “You look like a short stop. Or like you play second base.”  She gave a little nod. And I added, “And one more…”  She said, “Pitcher?”  Again, she got another nod.  Then she squeezed her little bicep and said, “you look like you have a good arm.  Maybe you play catcher.”  She just shook her head quietly.  Then, the lady told her that the most important thing about the game is to have fun.  And stay in school. I then handed Peyton our tickets and had her navigate us to our gate.  She found the gate from the ticket.  Then she looked up to the airport signs and followed the gate numbers.  We found our row, and she called out the gate numbers looking at the odd and then even gates.  We found some food first then plopped on the ground in front of the gate.  The chairs were all full of passengers.  She had her car seat to sit on while I sat on the people mover ledge.  Soon Dave and Brandon came but not before I got a text from Dave asking what gate we were at.  After going to the restroom, we were in line to board the plane.  Brandon was sitting with me to do work while Peyton was with Dave in front of us.  The flight was uneventful.

When we arrived, we got our rental car with an upgrade from a small SUV to a large one. It had a third row!  We headed to a cracked seed place to stock up on snacks both for here and for our trip back.  Then we checked into the hotel and met up with my parents for dinner.  After dinner, we waited for fireworks while the kids played in the sand.  It was late by the time the fireworks ended, especially with the time change.  We headed home to shower up.  And Now we’re fighting with Peyton to sleep while Brandon is snoozing away.  She slept on the plane while he didn’t, and it’s really showing now especially since it’s midnight on home time.

Triathlete

Peyton wanted to do the triathlon again this year, but Brandon did not. So we geared up to take her over to the JC for her race at 1110 am. It was much easier setting only one kid this year. Dave wasn’t able to help in the transition area, only set her up. She was responsible for getting her gear together. Dave put her near the bike exit, and he stationed himself there while I was at the pool. I had her wear her bright orange shirt to make her a bit more visible. I wore a bright pink sweatshirt, and even from across the pool, she waved to me.

Right as the last brother was performing, she put her head down and gave a big sigh. She was very brave, and she got up there and did her thing.

Peyton wore her birthday t-shirt from the sharks ice last year. Piano Recital

This morning, Brandon was doing homework, while Dave was doing errands with Peyton. When he came home, he took Brandon to his game, while I went to do errands for Brandon for his project. I had to go to the fabric store, get some snacks for the piano recitals and pick up a picture. Brandon has to make a mini-me for his family cultural project. His game was hard-fought, in the rain, but the team couldn’t pull off a come from behind victory. Brandon did hold down the fort at pitcher in the last inning, but it wasn’t enough for the home team to come back. I took him home right away to change his clothes for his piano recital. He wore one of the shirts from Ian, tucked into some too-big pants. He looked awkward, but luckily, he didn’t care. When we arrived, the house was packed! We found some seats on the couch, and luckily, we were on time, as Brandon was up 5th.

He hadn’t practiced since his lesson on Wednesday, but he pulled it off! He played better than he has ever done in practice, dynamics and all!

Golfing

Peyton earned $225 in walk a thon pledges, so she was able to get a trip to golfland The difference is this year we were responsible for getting her there. It wasn’t a drop off, so I took her there right after school. We waited in line to get her club and ball. She was trying to figure out who to golf with. There were some Chinese girls from her class last year, but she doesn’t really hang out with them. Then there was C, who she knows from CDC, and had attended birthday parties with in the past. We also looked at the roster to see who else was coming, and there were a few boys that she knew from her grade. They weren’t there yet, but I know their moms and I would’ve enjoyed hanging out with them when they arrived. She didn’t want to hang out with the girls, so she grabbed a club and ran off with C. He was cute, and he looked out for her. He told the boys that came up behind them, “I’m first, and Peyton’s next.” He looked out for her, but not before himself. They followed each other around through all the holes. I was able to get a few of her shots. She ended up with 4 hole in ones, and one “hole in two” (she started over again after miss-hitting the first ball, and it went in on the second shot, cleanly, prompting C to label it a “hole in two”). There were some other yuckier hits, where she ended up picking up the ball and moving on. There was one hole that looks like a volcano.

The group was staying until 3 pm, but Brandon needed to be picked up by 230 pm. That meant I had to leave around 205 pm to allow for drive time and parking. I wasn’t quite sure what to do, but one of the moms that was around our group offered to watch Peyton. I stayed 18 holes, then the kids washed up and ate pizza. I left her sitting with the boys and reminded her to not leave with anyone. I went back to get Brandon, then we headed back to get Peyton. I got there and the kids were inside the game area. They were given a card loaded up with money to play video games. Another mom caught me and said she had to sign for Peyton’s game card. An adult had to sign for the card, and Peyton told her that I wasn’t there. The mom told her it was okay. She told me she was looking out for Peyton, too. I touched base with the first mom to let her know I was back. In the meantime, the second mom said she forgot her phone in the car, so I watched the three boys she drove. I asked her which three she had, and she pointed to each of them (her own, and two others). I asked Brandon to help me watch them, but it was easy since they were all in line to redeem their tickets. I named each kid, and Brandon said, “Whoah, that’s a lot of kids.” Peyton told me, “I played Luke at air hockey; I won 7 to 5.” Luke is the boy that told his mom that he goes easy on Peyton in four square. His mom told me that he is very competitive, and it was surprising to hear he was going easy on someone. I asked Luke, “Did Peyton beat you at air hockey?” He looked sheepish, and said, “Yeah, she did, but I have 210 tickets!” I responded, “Thanks for playing with her.” Later, I asked Peyton who paid for the game, if she used her card or if he used his. She told me he paid for it. She cashed in her tickets, got a huge bouncy ball, and we headed home. To continue the fun, I had them do some kinect, so Brandon could have some exercise, too. They were getting along great! It’s like the blue moon, every once in awhile, it happens.

Kinect-ing.

Then, Dave texted me to ask if I wanted to watch Zootopia. He had tickets for us, and he wanted to meet up at the theater. I let them play a little while longer, then we headed out. There was no traffic up until the exit. We were 0.5 miles away, and it took us almost 15 minutes! We arrived just as previews were underway. We missed Finding Dory, but got a few others. Soon, the movie started. I did okay watching, but at some point, I fell asleep. Like out cold! The seats were too comfy, and I had been busy all day long. The kids were happy watching, and they enjoyed the movie. We ended up eating acai bowls for dinner, and we came home for a later bedtime. This weekend both kids have piano recitals.
