“You had to be there”; Screen-free week

This is what Dave said when I told him about what happened today. I’ve been giving Peyton honey along with her antibiotics, to help with her cough. It’s getting better, but I give it to her before bed to help overnight. Instead of a spoon, I just drizzle it in her mouth. Tonight, she pointed to her mouth and said, “Just throw it in there!” Such a clown! Dave was vacuuming upstairs, and I’d asked Peyton if she got fluoride. She said, “I dunno. Go ask Dave.” I said, “Who’s Dave?” She said, “The boy, who is vacuuming!” No respect.
Brandon has taken a pledge to be screen-free starting today through Sunday. So far, Brandon: 1, Parents: 0 or -5 if you count the number of screens that are currently on. Dave: tablet + TV. Me: phone, laptop, TV. So sad. At least we waited until the kids were asleep. And I went to the gym for the first hour of the evening. Not bad, right? Okay, just fooling myself. The adults cannot live without the screens, but at least the kids can hold out for as long as they can! The school is defining screen as not just TV, but computer, handheld devices, basically anything that takes batteries and has pixels. Alexa told me about this book, we’ll have to go check it out.   The Boy With Square Eyes

It’s about a boy who stares at the screen for too long, then everything becomes pixelated, and the remedy is to go outside and look around out there.  That’ll give the kids something to think about 🙂

Sunday

This morning, Brandon was working on homework, and needed a bit of peace and quiet. I set out with Peyton to do just that. We went to get a few groceries and deposited a check at the bank. We got back, and then I had Brandon with me doing homework, while Peyton watched on. Brandon does much better with non-fiction than fiction in terms of reading comprehension. I recall not liking non-fiction much when I was younger, so good for him, trying to learn something new! He especially likes bugs and other animals. There are several nature-based books in his online reading database, so it suits him well. We headed out to the Japanese festival, and after looking for parking and walking to the festival, we found it was very crowded. We usually go to these things earlier in the day, and for good reason. It was around 1pm, and neither kid had napped yet. We stayed for only 15-20 minutes or so, just long enough to take a quick look around. Last year, we bought a book for Peyton, about the year of the Rat. I didn’t find Brandon’s year, but we did find the booth again, and they had Brandon’s book – the dog! So I got that for him, and it was signed by the author. The lines for the shave ice were too long, otherwise, Dave wanted to make up some for Brandon’s mishap yesterday. So instead, he asked where he wanted to go. Brandon responded, “Dim sum.” We weren’t sure that they’d have dim sum still since it was rather late, but we went anyways. I told Dave not to ask Peyton since I’d guessed what her answer would be about what she wanted to eat. Noodles. Dave did ask Peyton, and though I didn’t hear her answer, I heard Dave laugh and say, “Oh my goodness.” She repeated her answer, and it was indeed, “Noodles.” I know my daughter 🙂 We were a bit surprised she was still awake, and hanging in there. It helped the kids were arguing over books in the back seat. We got to the restaurant and waited about 10 minutes before getting a table. We ordered our food instead of waiting for the carts, even though the food we’d wanted started passing us by. The kids each had their favorites, but both enjoyed the gailan. Brandon wanted a little oyster sauce (we’d asked for it on the side), and when I tried to give it to Peyton, too, she whined and asked for no sauce. Good for her! After they were full, we continued to talk to Peyton to keep her up. We made it back by about 230pm or so, and she went to her bed without a problem. Dave was thinking about going riding with Ted, as they’d discussed yesterday after their ride, but then texted and asked them just to come over for dinner instead. They did that around 5pm. I was supposed to go to a dinner with the high school friends (our bimonthly event), but it had been a long day, and I’d prefer to hang out at home especially knowing that the kids would be coming over. We had an easy dinner of burgers and dogs, and the three older kids played reasonably well together. In fact, they were all playing together after dinner, with some games that I’d taken out that were age appropriate for a 3, 4 and a 6 year old. They had their own fun, and played their own game, but it was a huge mess. They had so much fun though making that mess. They all eventually helped clean it up, and miraculously, we found all 44 pieces of fruit! Later, Brandon and Mckayla in Peyton’s room, and I’d been watching them for awhile. They were playing nicely in the kitchen and with the pirate ship. I know, weird in the same sentence. I went back to see what the younger two were doing. Peyton was playing with the Beyblades, and Marcus had been watching Mickey and Chuggington. We heard giggling for the most part, then suddenly, crying. Brandon came down first, with a guilty look on his face and a smile, never a good combo. Apparently, it got a bit rough, as there was a food fight (it was plastic food), and Mckayla got a sandwich to the head. Brandon was told to get her some ice, and he applied it to her head. Both started giggling shortly after, but there was a bump on Mckayla’s head. Brandon was then sent for his bath, while the other three got some watermelon. Marcus wasn’t too interested in it, but later changed his mind. The three kids then made their way outside, playing with all the tennis balls that we’ve been using for Brandon’s t-ball practice. The tennis balls are lighter to throw, and also safer to catch, making it easier for him to practice without having a sore arm or catching one in the face. We cleaned up the balls, then the Kao’s headed out. Peyton was given a bath, while Brandon finished up with his teeth and then off to bed. One day, we will be brave enough to have all OS’ers over. We’ll have to spill outside, since we definitely don’t have enough living room space for the 7 and counting kids under 6! Hopefully it will be a zero injury day.

Oops…sno cone

So, I forgot to finish Brandon’s snow cone story.  Since he chose that, I told him he could only have one brownie bite at Laurie’s house.  I knew she would have them there, so I was prepping him for that.  As we walked back to the car, I was holding Peyton’s hand behind Brandon, while Dave was ahead of him.  Suddenly, I stopped and saw his brightly colored sno cone on the floor.  He put his head down in mourning, and Dave turned around when I’d gasped.  We don’t know what happened exactly, but I Kamdeepak capsules are developed using pure plant ingredients to improve vitality cialis generic no prescription and vigor. brand levitra 20mg Additionally worry about your performance anxiety can only makes your PE worse. Medicine taker; Awww

Peyton likes her medicine. She reminds me to give it to her, which I’m happy about, since it’s stored in the refrigerator, and a bit out of sight, out of mind. She says, “I want the new medicine that the boy (pharmacist) got. He called my name.” It seems since she started the medicine, she’s gotten sicker? Maybe it’s all just coming to the surface, but she hawked a loogie today! Brandon must have always swallowed whatever he coughed up, but being the girl that she is, she didn’t want to do that. Not that she was any girlier about it by opening her mouth to show me, I quickly grabbed her so that she could spit in the sink. Gross, with a capital G. Later, she was telling me, “Mommy, Bruddah loves mustangs (cars), and Daddy loves doggies (because he says “Doggie, doggie, doggie”). I asked her, “And what do you love?” She said, “YOU!” Awww…I love her, too. But I told her that she can love more than one thing. So she said, “Okay, I love daddy and bruddah, too.”
This morning, Dave got up early and went riding with Ted. I got up, too, since it was my normal weekly wake up time, 630am. Brandon had just gotten up, but Peyton was still asleep. I asked Brandon to flush, since he hadn’t, but as soon as he did, Peyton’s eyes opened immediately, startled. It was almost like when I’d picked her up from school unexpectedly yesterday. I was watching for her reaction when he flushed it, so I agreed with Brandon he didn’t have to flush the toilet until everyone was awake, but he had to wash his hands, since that didn’t make as much noise. So, we started our day off early. I let the kids watch cartoons while they ate breakfast, because I told them when they were done, we were working on workbooks. They agreed, and watched Doc McStuffins. After breakfast, they put all the dishes into the sink, and I washed while they were doing their own books. Later, I stopped to help each of them work on different things. For some reason, I’d thought I hadn’t washed the dishes and said I needed to do that. Brandon said, “But you already did that!” Senior moment! He was right, as I returned to the sink, and it was empty. Dave came home at 9am, as I’d requested, and I quickly got ready to take Peyton to gymnastics by 930am. We had a full class again today; here are some videos of her doing a front roll on the beam, and I think it was a cat scratch on the bar and a full rotation of activities in the bar room. Afterward, we came home briefly, so that I could change, and then we headed out to Brandon’s t-ball game. We walked, since I’d wanted to get more exercise, and stall a bit, since it wasn’t quite time for the game to start. I’d packed her some snacks – cheesestick, apple chips, and her green beans. I’d also packed water for her. She walked with me, without complaint, except that she requested to be carried across the street, as I’d had in the past. She even told me, “See, I’m walking, and no saying, ‘I’m tired, I’m tired!’ ” We got there right as the game was going to start. She immediately asked for her cheese, as we’d discussed it might get a little yucky if it was too warm. Then she ate her apple chips and then her green beans. I’d brought her workbook to keep her entertained. She looked up a some point and said, “Oh, Bruddah!” as if she’d not even recognized that he was playing. Actually, he and another boy look so alike that his teammates, coaches and even the opposing players mix them up. Another kid on the opposing team called out Brandon’s name when it was Jonathan up to bat. It’s nice to know the other kids on the other teams as well. The league is centered around our specific neighborhood, incorporating only two of districts schools, so most of the kids know each other from school. After we were done with the game, we headed over to the snack shack. Brandon was so excited to get a snow cone, and Peyton was already eating a bao, so she didn’t get anything. We used Brandon’s other snack shack ticket to get me some nachos 🙂 Thanks, son! Here are some pictures (#6, or the guy with the bright orange-ringed socks):

We came home, Brandon showered, and then we were all off to bed. We took a nap, then Peyton woke up and mumbled something, but it was too late. She’d wet herself. Good thing she was on her crib mattress at the foot of the bed, which is water proof. We got her bathed, then headed up to Laurie’s going away party. The kids were the only kids there, so we were trying to not interrupt anyone else’s fun time by keeping them entertained. We’d brought Peyton’s backpack full of stuff, and Brandon had legos. That lasted for a little bit, then Peyton started getting into Brandon’s stuff, and it all broke down. Both phones came out, and we had peace again. Screen-free week is going to be tough; luckily, we’re packed full of activities next weekend – gym, game, and bridal shower.  As we were leaving Laurie’s, there were two brothers that had just arrived.  The younger one was about Brandon’s age, while the older was probably a few more years beyond that.  Peyton was getting flirty, looking at the younger one, and giggling.  Jenny and Alexa noticed it; Dave was unaware or in denial.  After what Theo said yesterday, Dave was already questioning his intentions with his daughter.  After we got home, since we’d already eaten dinner, and it was fairly early, we walked to the parks with the kids’ bikes.  Peyton was biking, and doing it mostly on her own, but we had the stick in the back, so I could take over if she got lazy.  Brandon and Dave walked Brandon’s bike, since he’s not quite adept with it yet.  We stayed for less than an hour, then came on back home.  Peyton was on the structures at the park/school, and I didn’t see Dave anywhere, so I thought they’d gone home.  I hadn’t had keys, and when we got home, the boys were nowhere to be found.  We waited about 5 minutes, then saw them coming down the street.  They were in another parking lot out of sight of where we were.  We got the kids to bed; Brandon falling asleep faster than his sister.

Busy busy

This morning, we headed off at 715am to get Peyton to school before going back to Brandon’s school for flag salute.  They were announcing the top earners and top walkers from last month’s walk a thon.  Emmett did win the top walker for the kinders, 4 laps more than Brandon at 51.  It was all that time eating that Brandon did that slowed him down! Better walk next time. Flag salute was longer than usual, so I left by 845am. I caught Brandon’s attention to say goodbye, and he was okay with me leaving early.  We blew each other kisses, and then I ran home to meet up with Laurie.  She’s leaving after this weekend, so we were going for one more S’bucks walk.  We hung out and drank coffee and cocoa, then walked back home so that I could go back to the school for yard duty.  I was able to get a video of Brandon on his little bike.  I drove back home, then in 10 minutes, I changed and walked back to Brandon’s school.  He had only one more punches to complete his walk to school card.  We’d walked from the far corner this morning, and we would be walking all the way home this afternoon.  He selected a business card that was good for a free fish at the aquarium store!  I think it was a better gift than a ruler or eraser.  He’s old enough for his own pet now.  There was a business card from a florist for a free flower, but he didn’t choose that one either.  We’ll have to see what kind of fish it is.  Hopefully it’ll be hearty.  We walked home, had a snack, then got to reading his books.  It’s been awhile since we’ve read the books, since the levels are harder and the books more involved.  It took us 30 minutes to have the book read to him, read to me, and then answer his 10 questions pertaining to the story.  After that, he was free to play for 10 minutes, then we left to get Peyton. She knew it was me, and I grabbed her to carry her out.  I left Brandon in the hallway, and he came with me as soon as he saw me. I looked down at Peyton, and she was crying!  I think I scared her, picking her up like that.  She quietly had tears running down her face, and she was trying to wipe them away.  She was fine by the time we got to the car.  We got to KP with plenty of time and even found a great parking space.  We checked in, and both kids were playing nicely – Peyton reading books, while Brandon played with his own toys.  They called us back quickly, and checked her out.  Diagnosis: sinus infection.  Amox x 10 days.  Hopefully that will get rid of her yucky cough.  She sounds like an old man with TB.  We went back to Peyton’s school for the art show.  We were 30 minutes early, and I helped keep the kids entertained.  Dave showed up right before the art show was to start.  We paraded around to see all the kids’ art, then the kids had to pick a cookie to share.  Peyton wanted oatmeal, but Brandon wanted chocolate chip.  We asked Peyton if she’d like chocolate chip, and the Jedi mind tricks worked.  She nodded.  So Brandon split it, and Peyton got to choose first.  She picked the smaller of the two pieces, and Dave asked what’s wrong with Peyton’s brain.  We headed over to Brandon’s after school program who was having a kick off to summer.  Theo and Rohan were there already.  We had a bbq dinner, with Brandon scarfing down a hot dog and then a hamburger patty.  Peyton was slowly eating her hot dog, when Rohan looked at the two siblings and said, “Wow, you two look exactly alike.”  Theo chimed in and said, “Peyton’s cheeks are pretty big.  It’s kinda cute!”  After dinner, we headed over to the bike day at the school.  They were tuning up bikes, and reviewing the rules of the road.  Brandon’s still a novice compared to some of his classmates, who are skilled riders.  Peyton almost got clobbered on her little trike, but she was able to maneuver around danger.  One of the times, she was on the structure, walking around, and a kid was riding on the soft top, where she probably wasn’t supposed to for the fact that she almost nailed Peyton.  Luckily, she slammed on her brakes, while I pulled Peyton back.  We left before we either caused or were the victim of an accident.  We were just hanging out at home, talking about Screen-Free week from 4/30 to 5/6.  7 days without any screens!  And the school provided us with a big red banner to hang over the TV.  Dave scoffed when he saw it.  They can only use the screens for homework if it’s required, otherwise, they’ll be a lot of reading, lego-making and going outside.  Maybe that’ll encourage us to do the same!  Peyton was looking at the book faire information and said, “Look, Shoe-La-La!”  I looked at what she was pointing to, and she was right!  That was the book’s title!  We’re sending them to bed early as we have a long day tomorrow – gymnastics, t-ball, nap, then Laurie’s going away party!

This is just for posterity…

Word mix-ups; Third time’s the charm!

Peyton still mixes up some words, but she’s so sure of what she is saying. On our way in to school, after the rain, she said, “Stay out of the petal, right?” I told her, “It’s puddle.” She said, “What? Petal?” We spent the rest of the walkway reviewing puddle not petal. Today, I asked her what month it was. She said, “Apron!” Brandon giggled and said, “It’s not ‘apron’. It’s April!” Peyton said, “No, but it’s APRON! Right, Mommy? I’m right!” Finally, after dinner, Peyton wanted the dried apricots that Brandon had after he finished his dinner. She asked me for “the little red things that Bruddah ate.” I didn’t know what she was talking about. She said, “You know, the apple-cots.” I corrected her, but not very whole-heartedly; I like that one.

Single Mommy; Lip

Today, I was single mommy again. Dave took Peyton, although she was not happy about it. She didn’t give me a kiss; I kissed her on the cheek as she turned away. She was upset because she wanted me to take her to school. I got to work at 745am, then waited until 8am to sign in. That meant I could leave by 430pm to get both kids. My day didn’t go so well, having a co-worker use inappropriate words that a patient heard and was upset by. After I told said co-worker that he upset the patient, his colleague proceeded to retort that I should close my door. I had a mind to rip him a new one had the patient not been there to witness it. Instead, I shared it with my office-mate, who suggested I go to management, which I did. Totally unprofessional no matter what your role in the building. Ugh. So, I had a lunch meeting, and then headed out right at 430pm. I got Peyton first, and chatted with her teacher about the transitioning. She said whenever she is told she is going to the new class, she starts biting her fingers. The teacher said that Peyton knows she’s the shark in her current classroom, and a little fish in the new. I think the transitioning is harder than just going cold turkey. Poor thing. She told me about her new class, “But I don’t have a mat with my name on it. And I don’t have any sheets. We went to pick up Brandon. He had a hard day with the substitute teacher today. He did well at after school program, but not so much during the day. We got home, and he had to work on his journal article while I prepped dinner. I had Peyton working in her own workbook to keep her busy. Brandon followed all directions I’d given him to get his task completed before dinner was served. After that, he went upstairs to bathe himself, while Peyton finished dinner. When he was done, I was ready with her. Bath time was done for both by 645pm. We were reading shortly after; first Peyton read, “No, David” to Brandon, then Brandon and I took turns reading an Einstein’s book, while Peyton helped with the sound effects and page-turning. Brandon asked why it was so late that he was going to sleep. It was 710pm! He must really be tired! Again, the gremlin effect – he needs to eat and have lots of sleep, otherwise, he is a terror.
I texted Dave that both kids were in their beds, lights off, at 721pm. Peyton came out once, to find me stepping, then went back upstairs. Dave came home a few hours later, after I’d already showered up and was reading. Not a bad evening 🙂

59 and counting; I love you

Today was a better day for Peyton in her transition. I stopped in to touch base with her new teacher, and she assured me that she didn’t cry today, but that yesterday she did. Peyton’s been counting again, but this time, she blows by 30, and can get up to 59. I have to prompt with “Six-Zero” then she will answer, “60!” Every 10, she will get stuck, until I give her the number. I used to have to sound out the first number, but now with me telling her the actual numbers, she knows! She will repeat everything all over after reaching 100. She went around 3 cycles this morning alone on the way to school.

I asked her, “Why do you want me to go in there with you?” She answered, “Because I love you!” Aww…but it was still not enough to get me into the toy house 🙂 Heartless, I know. She got over it.
