UCLA camp
We drove down on Thursday after I went to work for a few hours. Peyton started UCLA camp on Friday. We stayed in a hotel in downtown LA, and walked 1/2 a mile to Grand Central market for dinner. P was nervous, but it was actually quite clean and relatively few bums. Especially compared to SF. The streets were pretty clean, but she held my hand tight while we walked. We each had our own meals; Peyton and I split a seafood stew, while Brandon had fish and chips, while Dave had street tacos.
We took a little tram up in the middle of downtown, then walked back the rest of the way.
We went to sleep early, as we knew we’d have a long day the next day. We checked in at the earliest time to check in, and then we had to wait another full hour before opening ceremonies.

Coach I (Kelly Inouye-Perez) fired the girls up and gave them a pep talk before they were released for lunch.
We headed to lunch, then they came back for some station work.
They were evaluating girls to see their skill levels before dividing them into teams. They did finally split into teams, came up with a team name, and also a skit to present the next night. The coaches took down contact information for the kids who had phones. Peyton learned to be responsible for her gear, her meal ticket, and being on time from meals. She was a bit nervous for lunch, since she didn’t have a team yet, but she texted me that some girls asked her to sit with them. I was happy for that. She even met another girl named Peightynn. We found her again on the field for the evening. They took metrics that first evening. She sent me this text:
We drove back to the hotel after this day. On Saturday, she went to get breakfast, but wasn’t feeling very hungry. She got two muffins, and also got me one. We walked up with her to Easton stadium, where they got to play on the actual field the softball team plays on.
They also got to check out the locker room. One of the coaches told us we could take her out on the field and take pictures of her. We snuck her out on the field and had her in the dugout and in various places. 
When we returned, the girls had already packed up their stuff, and were heading out. They were wondering whose stuff it was, and we were guilty. We walked down with her coach, and she was walking with us, and told us, “She’s good. How old is she?” We told her she was 10. She said, “If she’s this good now, I can’t wait to see what she’ll be like as she gets older.” She did mention, “She’s silent, but good.” We didn’t know what to say! I mean, we know she works hard, but it’s validating to hear it from someone else. Her coach is a player herself on CSUN. I saw her tap Peyton on the shoulder and try to talk to her.
I asked her later about it.
We continued down the hill, dropped her off at her own lunch, then we headed to lunch in Westwood. We joined another mom who was lunching already, waiting to meet up with the girls again. It was a long lunch, at least 2 hours. We didn’t know what else to do. We headed back to the field after stopping for Diddy Riese cookie sandwiches. 
Now, they were scrimmaging each other. I had warned Peyton of the schedule, and that she shouldn’t eat too much. She wanted to eat ice cream in the dorms when she found out that we were eating it.
We watched her scrimmage against the other team her age/ability. She was the starting short stop, but she did have to switch out to outfield with the other girls to make it fair. They alternated innings. But whenever she could, she would position herself there. She hustled up even though it was pretty warm out there. We were under umbrellas and still pretty warm. We then broke for dinner. We headed out to Beverly Hills for dinner, picking up some food to eat back at the stadium, as the girls were watching a movie after skit night.

Peyton’s skit required very little speaking, which was perfect for her.
The movie we watched was “Coco”. While we were leaving the stadium, another coach gave P a high five and said, “I remember you! You had 5/5 on your accuracy!”
We went home that night, as there was little traffic expected on Sunday. We still did leave by 7 am to get there with plenty of time to spare. She went to breakfast, and this time, she stayed in there and ate with her friends. She lasted at least 25 minutes this time. She even went to visit a dorm room of a friend of hers. I asked her how it was. Her response, “It was small. With bunk beds.” Her last station was another skill building with Bri Tautalafua, the third baseman.
She had them doing challenges, both infield and outfield. Surprisingly, Peyton did better in the outfield drills, coming in second for her team. She did run faster than the girl who beat her in the drill though, and Bri had to throw her a ball she didn’t think she’d get to end the multiple round tie-breakers. Finally, the girls had their last lunch, and this time, Peyton went all out. She didn’t have any more softball after lunch, so she had pizza, pasta and salad. And ice cream. They ended their day with shopping time in the student store, and fun and games, with water balloon toss. Coach I ended with closing remarks and then each coach presented their “Camper of the week awards”. I told Dave I was going to record. He thought it was presumptuous. I told him, if she didn’t get it, then I dump the footage. But on the off chance she got something, then I’d have it recorded! And I’m glad I did!
At the end of camp, she had made friends, namely a girl on her team from one of the strong LA teams in the area. She made an impression on the coaches, and had fun doing so. We didn’t get to see her coach after camp, as she went back to the field to clean up. We had Peyton text her thank you. She responded right away!
Next year she’ll go back and stay overnight! She’s ready now.
This week
We are single-childed this week. Brandon is in Chicago now. We arrived at 430 am on Tuesday morning and had trouble waking up. We showered and got to Santa Cruz for a late lunch. We went shopping and a coffee run, of course, for Dave. We’re on a mission for stickers for our drink vessels.
We did our usually reading and piano as well.
Wednesday, we headed to piano first thing then went to lunch with Dave. We waited a little bit in downtown San Jose before heading out to the mall. He’s on a mission to get sunglasses. But we didn’t find ones he liked.

We went home after this and she was allowed to stay with us since she was more vocal than usual.
Today, I cleaned a bit after she did piano and read. We’re working on cleaning up our back room. And making a dent in that “junk room” with kids’ toys.
Weekend
We were totally wiped out on Saturday, not getting up until almost noon. It was super hot outside. And inside the house. I didn’t feel like going out and putting sunblock on, but Kirby was inside the park waiting on us.
We headed in after some boba and shave ice. 
We met up with Kirby who then walked around and sat while we ate dinner. We did a few rides Peyton didn’t get to ride the day before, Autopia, 
got her phone case which she didn’t get when the other girls got theirs. I tried to take selfies while she was driving and her response was “you’re distracting me!” Told her she’d better say that in 6 more years. She wanted to learn the tricks of actually driving. We got lucky as the reserved seating section was opened for us.
We tried to end with Pooh, but it was closed.
Alas. We had one last day on Sunday.
We headed to the park a little earlier, but still after lunch with the grandparents.
This time we went on Pooh.

Sunday was great! No lines!! We also did jungle boat cruise.
Monday we had dim sum with the grandparents before packing up and heading out. We wanted to beat traffic to Cerritos so we hung out at the mall. We picked the kids up from their 4-week summer school session on Friday. They had a mini summer school open house which we attended for both kids.
We proceeded to drive down to LA after going home to quickly eat lunch. It was super hot on the way down. We had a quick stop for ice cream then dinner at Porto’s. Dave made a mistake of telling the team we’d made it down to LA and orders started coming in. We arrived to LA by 9 and the grandparents took over kid duties while Dave and I had date night.
Saturday we hung out at home until Meg, Jeff and the girls came over. Soon after that, Mike came over to lend us his camera. We headed to lunch, then went in to Disneyland.

We met up with Kirby to sell him Girl Scout cookies – finally!
We called it an early night as Coach Ray had suggested since we had an early start for our 930 am friendly. We had two games on Sunday in Fountain Valley. We headed back to the team’s hotel to swim some. Dave headed to the coaches’ meeting with the coaches while I took P and B to meet up with Debbie, Pish, Katie and Kyle. Katie was also playing in the tournament for 12’s. We met up with the team back at downtown Disney. The moms had all the kids and took them out to dinner. Our kids had already eaten so they just snacked on bread. The dads took Uber back to DTD for beers then Dave headed home with us while the dads took Uber back to their hotel. 
Our Monday game was at 8 am so it was an early wake up time. We hadn’t factored in traffic, so instead of arriving 20 minutes early, we were right on time. We had Clutch up. The team lost 6-8. We needed to check in and get bats tested for proper compression.

We headed to opening ceremonies and pin trading. It was blazing hot out there but Katie managed to find her to pin trade.
She also met up with Camrynn who she had met last January at a softball event. It took Peyton awhile to figure out how to pin trade and if she didn’t like a pin to say, “No thanks, I already have that one.”
We then headed to the beach for some bonfire fun. The girls played whiffle ball!
Brandon had a good time with Myles.
Tuesday was also early with a 930 am game against Georgia impact. There was an issue with our car which required Dave to visit the dealership. The check engine light went off and in the end, it’s an emissions issue. He dropped us off at the field early so we watched most of Impact’s first game. The team tied 1-1 against this team. Then there was a small break, then the team played patriots, who they’ve played and beaten before. Uncle Johnny brought Gregory out to this game. 
Instead of playing games with Brandon and Myles, Gregory watched intently and asked about the differences between softball and baseball, which he plays. Luckily, uncle Johnny got to see a good game that the team won!
After they left, we went back to the main field to take a team photo.
We cleaned up at the hotel and got ready for dinner. We left Brandon in the room with Myles and a pizza. We took Jiyah and Keith to dinner.

Wednesday was the start of bracket play. The first pool play games meant nothing. It started for real at another 8 am game. This time it was 7 innings. My parents and uncle Harvey came this time. They saw us against Fury from Tennessee. They’d played a late game the night before and struggled to arrive. We scored first at 2-0 then it was tied 2-2 for four innings before they woke up and ended up scoring another 7 runs. We lost 2-9. Softball was done after that and we headed to eat lunch with my parents. Then we headed to the beach with Cat and her family.

All four kids had a great time. We then headed back to watch Camrynn play at 5 pm.
We called it a night after this as we dropped to loser bracket play for another 8 am game. We had dinner then went to try a dessert – churros!
This time it was against UFP 09 who had never won against us in the past.
Unfortunately, our team didn’t show up. They bested us 3-6. They clearly came to play. So ended our PGF nationals run. Uncle Harvey and my parents came again along with Sole’s grandparents. Camrynn, Candice and Ryder were also in attendance for this super early game considering Cam had a 1230 pm game.
We went to check into our hotel, our splurge at the Grand California. We’d never stayed before, and luckily our room was ready when we arrived. We summoned the coaches to come over with us.
And party we did. Or wallowed in sorrow.
We ended our evening at Roscoe’s chicken and waffles. We had a solid meal, then we called it a night. That set us up for an early morning to Disneyland with 13 of us.
Sunrise at Grand CA
We met up with the crew at 7 am at the kiosks. We were able to get everyone into Magic Morning and hit radiator racers first thing.

Toy story mania: I was best in car! Granted, it was early in the day.
The goal was to last until midnight but in reality, our cars had to be moved from the parking lot by then. Part of the group left before the Main Street Electrical Parade which was being brought back that night. It was even live-broadcast!
There were a few who lasted but barely. We caught Taytum snoozing a few times but once the parade started, she was all in!
We headed out after this was done.
By the way, Brandon was taken to the airport around noon to meet my parents to head home, as they were headed out to Chicago the following week.
