Today Show groupies

We woke up around 8am thinking we’d try to get to the Today Show for the American Idol performance by Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis.  I watch the Today Show almost every morning when I’m getting ready for work.  Usually they have a 9 o’clock musical segment, so we were shooting for that.  We just got up and got ready as soon as possible.  We rushed down the 20+ blocks to Rockefeller Center.  When we got there, the area wasn’t so crowded, so something seemed off.  Usually, it’s really crowded, especially if we were there for AI.  Then we overheard the security guard say that the performances had just wrapped up 15 minutes ago!  Somewhat disappointed, we hung out to see what else was going on in the plaza.  The 2008 Olympic women’s gymnastics team out on the plaza, with the bar and mats.  Bela Karoli was there and was interviewed by Ann Curry.

Next we waited for Tiki Barber to interview Chef Ming Tsai who was there to demonstrate his Asian take on grilling and BBQ.  We then left and walked around for awhile trying to figure out what to do especially since this was the earliest we’ve woken up all week.  So since we were already there, we went on a tour of Rockefeller Center – up to the observation deck and also in the Target room which had motion detector lights that would go off as you moved around the room.  Brandon really liked the cause and effect lesson in the room, since even Brandon had a little marker that lit up.  Every time he moved, the little light moved.  We were on the inside of the 64th floor looking down to the 63th floor.  He saw a girl sitting down and started waving to her.  The girl kind of hesitated and the waving back!  We later saw them closer up on the same floor and the girl told her mom that this was the kid that she was waving to.  So they waved again, but then Brandon was suddenly shy and started hiding.  We took some pretty cool pictures of Brandon standing on the observation deck window until the security guard told us to have him get down, because he was afraid he would fall out of the window (I was holding onto him, so I wasn’t worried, but I guess we were scaring the security guard).

EMILY!!

For breakfast, we went to get Ess-A-Bagel for authentic NY bagels.  It must be something in the water, because bagels are so much better here!  Too much cream cheese.  We asked for what was hot and only the plain ones were.  Dave had a lox and I had a sesame with blueberry cream cheese.  The lox was so good, we had another!  Brandon loves anything bready and filled with carbs, so he was happy eating pieces of bagel.  We brought one back for Kathleen, too.  As we were walking back, I got a tea from the downstairs cafe.  It was yummy.

Later in the evening, around 5pm, Emily came over to Kathleen’s after work.  She had worked the early shift and we were going to hang out for dinner.  We all went to go have pizza at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn.

 Grimaldi's Pizza

We all took the subway there.  It was great dinner conversation as all of us love food and Emily makes it!  We were asking her to share her kitchen stories – the wing challenges, Iron Chef, and the kitchen personalities.  We went for ice cream after pizza!  We were planning to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge as the sun was setting so we could see the NY skyline as our backdrop.  We couldn’t find the entrance!  Finally after asking around, we found it, but then realized it was almost two flights of stairs up!  We managed to get the stroller up and got to see the beautiful NY skyline as the sun was fading behind it.  It was so awesome to walk over the traffic whizzing by.

 Emily, Robyn, and Brandon

After getting back on the Manhattan side, we were trying to find a place for drinks, but somewhere we could also bring the stroller.  A tall order.  Since we didn’t find a suitable place, we headed on home.  There, Kat made a “nuts and berries” cocktail which was very yummy.  We chatted again, mostly about food, as Brandon went to sleep on the mattress.  Emily left around 230am!  I went to sleep with the alarm set for 8am – the American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks and runner up, Blake Lewis, were performing on the Today Show Plaza!

Casa Mono

We walked to Gramercy Park, a small little area with the only private park in the city (you need a key to get in), and home to the restaurant, Casa Mono.  We are “Top Chef” fans and this is where Ilan, the winner of season 2, used to work.  We ordered the Fideos and Clams, one of the dishes Ilan cooked on the show, pork tenderloin, asparagus, duck and pumpkin/goat cheese croquettes (those were my favorite along with the Fideos).  The restaurant was so tiny but strategically placed tables made the most of the space.  They had to fold up our stroller and store it outside of the restaurant since there was no room for it inside.  There were cubby holes in the tables for the water glasses, so they would not clutter the tabletops.  This was perfect for Brandon to play with the toys we brought for him and so he wouldn’t play with our water, which is what usually happens.  Since we went for lunch, it wasn’t so crowded, but this was definitely the finest dining Brandon has ever experienced.  He enjoyed the croquettes as much as I did!  We all walked back to Kathleen’s and had our usual afternoon nap.

I had wanted to see a Broadway show and Dave didn’t really care to, he rather have gone out to eat.  Kathleen had a brilliant idea that she’d go to see a show with me and then go out to dinner with Dave.  Dave and Erectile dysfunction is just a sexual disorder that is related to ones emotional caliber, but breaking down is not a stable state.Dialectic typing of traditional Chinese medicine for kidney disease superfinely shattered, buying viagra in uk then the micronized Chinese medicine is permeated into kidney lesions through the skin on the back via kidney area with the help of effective penetrant and osmosis devices. I would alternate baby duty.  So after our afternoon nap, Kathleen and I headed down to Times Square to TKTS to catch a broadway show.  Brandon and Dave had some alone guy time and walked around on their own.  I wanted to see Tarzan so we bought tickets and had two hours until the show.  Since I had wanted NY cheesecake and Dave’s not a big fan, we went to Lindy’s.  We had 2 potato knishes and some French Fries and some blueberry cheesecake.  It was so light and fluffy!  We talked and chatted and had a great time!  We walked back with plenty of time to be seated and see the show.  We had pretty good seats and there was a point in the show where we were so close to the action, it was right above our heads!  We wouldn’t have gotten that in the orchestra section!  Josh Strickland, of American Idol fame, was supposed to be Tarzan, but his understudy was there that night, probably because it was a Tuesday night.  We got home from the show around 1030pm, Brandon was still up, but just getting ready for bed (he was on PST the entire trip), so really it was close to his bedtime in California.  Dave and Kathleen turned around within 15 minutes and were out the door to check out Momofuku Ssam, headed by chef, David Chang (no, not that Dave Chang).  They returned a few hours later with fully tummies.

Central Park Zoo, Katz’s deli, and Max Brenner’s

We went uptown to the Central Park Zoo today.  It was a short subway ride.  Our first exhibit at the zoo was the “Californian Sea Lions”.  What are the chances that we come all the way out here to see those!  We did see a cool polar bear hanging out in his pen, smooshed up against the glass with his face and two paws.  That was neat because you could put your own hand up to touch his and see how big they really are.  It was a pretty small zoo, apparently the one to see is the Bronx Zoo, but it’s a little bit further away.

We started walking back home and passed thorugh the NBC store.  Brandon had fallen asleep along the way, so we figured we’d grab lunch.  While we were eating, he woke up and was really upset that we had started eating without him.  After we got home, Kathleen returned from her trip to Philadelphia.  For dinner, we went to Katz’s deli, the site of the infamous “When Harry Met Sally” scene.  We ate a pastrami, corned beef and brisket sandwich ordered from our waiter, Richard.

After dinner, we went to Max Brenner’s for dessert.  It’s a dessert only restaurant!  We shared Urban S’mores – huge marshmellows roasted on a small charcoal lit on fire with peanut butter, melted chocolate, and graham crackers.  Kat had a yummy chocolate martini.  We stopped at Duane Reade to buy water and Brandon saw Elmo on the sippy cup.  “Elmo ba-ba” = “Elmo’s on the sippy cup!”   24,000 steps today!

Ground Zero

We took the subway down to Ground Zero and toured the somber site.  Brandon was surpringly very quiet and played with his NYFD car, like he knew better than to make a scene.  We took some pictures and read some of the monuments, timelines and accounts of that fateful day.  We toured through the nearby St Paul’s chapel, a little known church prior to 9/11, which has since gotten lots of traffic.  There were pictures and memorabilia all throughout.

We then walked back through Greenwich Village, Soho, Noho, and then back to Madison Square Park.  This time we decided to wait in the Shake Shack line for 30 minutes!  We had burgers, hotdog and I ordered a concrete.  It was $6.75 but I didn’t want to feel like I missed out on it, so I went ahead and ordered one.  Since it was so hot, and I wanted to eat lunch first, by the time I was ready for it, I ended up drinking it through the straw instead of eating it with the spoon.  We went back “home” and took our afternoon nap.  For our evening outting, we went to Foot Locker “just to look” and then to Nathan’s for Dave to try their “famous” hotdog.  To me, a hot dog is a hot dog, there’s nothing famous about them.  I told Dave to eat the dog and then soak the bread in water like Kobayashi.  Dave declined.  We also stood outside the front of Madison Square Garden and then walked back through Korea town.  We ended up eating at a Thai place, though, go figure.

FAO Schwartz, Shake Shack, & Foot Locker?

Kathleen was going out of town for the weekend with some of her friends.  We had the extra key and were free to do whatever.  She left us with some points of interest around her apartment – Duane Reade, we needed diapers, a pizza place, and Shake Shack – a small hamburger joint where people wait a ridiculous amount of time for hot dogs, burgers and shakes.  We didn’t leave Kathleen’s until 1230pm since we had come in so late and not in any hurry.  Close to Kathleen’s there is some shopping, an H&M store, Madison Square Park and a Foot Locker.  Dave was on a mission to use his 30% coupon to Foot Locker and checked 2 stores today to find a pair of running shoes.  He did not find what he was looking for.  I couldn’t believe we were coming all this way and going to Foot Locker!  Madison Square Park is where the Shake Shack is.  We took one look at the line and kept on walking.  We took Brandon over to the swing set and tried the infant swing (we tried at Debbie & Pish’ baby shower and he didn’t like it).  Again, freaked out as soon as we let go of the swing.  Other kids were having a great time being pushed by their parents, but not our little frady cat.  He couldn’t wait to come out.  Oh well.  We went back to Kat’s and took an afternoon nap.

Afterwards, we took the subway to 57th to do some shopping.  The subway was an interesting experience – Brandon looks like a little doggy hanging out of the car window when the subway comes whoosing by.  There’s a lot of wind which makes him gasp and hold his breath.  Since we have to collapse the stroller, I always grabbed Brandon and Dave took the stroller.  Brandon never wanted down (luckily) while waiting for the subway.  I think he knew it was dangerous, or at least we kept telling him so.  We got out and walked to FAO Schwartz – they took the one in SF out, so only two remain, one in Vegas and then here in NYC.  We saw the “BIG” keyboard that Tom Hanks played with his feet in the movie.  They were having a kids’ birthday party and had a concert.  In the baby/toddler area in the basement, we let Brandon out the stroller for the first time.  He went nuts, playing with all the stuffed animals that were larger than he was, climbing on the soft rocking chairs and trying to knock over the Bugaboo displays.  We managed to get out of FAO with just a small set of NYFD fire trucks for Brandon, and (another 🙂 ) diaper bag for me.  We saw a Mister Softee’s truck right outside FAO and had to try one.  Based on Michelle’s suggestion, I got the chocolate dipped one and ate it behind the stroller so Brandon wouldn’t see us eating it.  We also saw the Apple Store with the iPhone ads.  We went to World of Disney and got a taxi cab with Goofy stuck inside as a souvenir.  Brandon loves saying words ending in “UCK”.  He laughs when we say that Goofy is “stuck”.  Whenever we passed by a pigeon, he pointed and said, “DUCK!” and when the fire truck sirens are going, he tries to say “fire truck” but that is not so clear (too many syllables).  Otherwise, he bounces in the stroller and says “ooh, ooh” trying to imitate the sirens.

We walked the 30 blocks or so back to Kat’s and just before going home, stopped by to visit Emily, a cook at the restaurant, A Voce.   We were not planning to meet until later in the week, but since we were close by, decided to say hi.  It was just dinner time, so she was really busy, but came out to say hi anyways.  We got take out from across the street and then were in for the rest of the night.  We rearranged Kat’s furniture outside and brought the mattress from our bed out to the living room.  Brandon was using Porter’s bed as his own and rubbing his face in the doggy bed.  Also, this way we didn’t have to worry about Brandon falling through the bed.  It was a perfect fit with her L couch, we could watch TV and most importantly, that is where the AC was!  We hope she wouldn’t mind.  17,000 steps today.

Our big NYC trip…

We left today at 330pm on our upgraded American Airlines flight.  We used miles to get business class for a little more room since we’re traveling with just the 3 of us for the first time.  The last 2 times we’ve flown to Hawaii, my mom was with us and we had another pair of hands.  We got to hang out in the lounge prior to our flight.  They had a kids section which was sort of sound-proof.  The TVs helped drown out some of the noise.  After we pre-boarded, we got ourselves comfy for the 5.5 hour flight.  We had the bulkhead seats so a little more footroom which came in handy after I fed Brandon on the way up and he was out cold.  Dave thinks it was due to the lack of oxygen, but it’s usually the case on the plane for him.  We made a bed of pillows and blankets and laid him down.  The airline passes out handheld DV players with movies loaded already.  So Dave and I plugged in and waited for dinner.  They served filet mignon and as soon as they placed it in front of us, we looked down and Brandon was staring straight up at us.  He has a keen sense for food – he barely has molars, yet Step 1: Clearing away the heat and toxic material with the urine, interstitial cystitis is caused generally by the inflammation, then the infection and viagra store in canada inflammation may be eliminated through the natural way, Use acupuncture.
