Saturday

This morning, we woke up in search of breakfast. My parents, aunt and uncle joined us as they’d all been up since even earlier this morning.  We laughed at Peyton who shouted out last night, “STOP INTERRUPTING ME!”  I remember hearing it but it was Brandon who recalled the words this morning.  He also told me I muttered, “No!” In my sleep.   We were too early for some shops, namely where Dave tried kaya toast yesterday.  We found a food court and the kids got jook again.  I still can’t eat savory food like that for breakfast, so I got kaya toast and coffee from another place that’s ubiquitous in town.  We all enjoyed breakfast then headed to Sentosa island to explore.  We bought monorail tickets and headed over to the different stops for a look around.  We chose the luge to participate with Peyton joining in as a passenger.  Brandon was too big to ride along with us, but he was hesitant to drive himself. We all outfitted ourselves with helmets, on top of our hats which is brought along with us. We were given instruction of the luge with some practice drills, then we were off   Our first run, we headed down the jungle course, which was fairly curvy.  Brandon ran himself right into an embankment, but fortunately the curb prevented him from being thrown downhill.  He just didn’t react quickly enough to the turn.  He gave me the most scared pouty face, but with encouragement, he kept riding.  That may have been his first and only straw but fortunately, he hung in there as we had purchased a three pack of rides.  When we got to the bottom, we took the ski lift back.  That was more scary, in my opinion than the luge itself.  We tried the dragon course the next time with Peyton riding with me.  With Peyton comes her go pro videographic skills.  Brandon navigated this course with a smile.  The last ride was back to the jungle course with Peyton requesting more speed but not that much. She was able to “drive” part of this last course.  Brandon conquered this course for the final run. My parents were waiting for us with each ride back.  We made our way back into town for the soft launch of Kat and Spencer’s newest coffee place, The New Black.   We met the managing staff, had pastries and coffee, including frothed milk for the kids.  My parents went back to the station while we coordinated with Spencer for a proper tour for Dave.  I kept the kids entertained with their own “Best thing I ever ate” questioning.  It was fun to talk about food with them, as after all, they are both Dave’s kids.  We headed back for a nap before we would then drop them off at Kat’s place to “borrow” their nanny for a night out on the town.  She’ll have to attempt to get them to sleep. 

We’re still napping them, but since I had two coffees today, I’m a bit wired.  We’ll all go to dinner together, then the adults, including my family members, will head over to the bar where we had helped host the chef while he toured American cuisine throughout several cities’ stops last year.  Dave is super excited for the opportunity especially since we’d heard so much about from inception to fruition.  Here are the pictures so far:

Trip So Far

We got from work as usual on Wednesday and headed to dinner at the club to avoid dishes, etc.  The kids were excited, but we managed to get them to sleep while we packed up the rest of our things.  They were out in a manner of minutes though they told us they were excited.  We got them up by just before 10 pm to head out to the airport.  Both were completely out and hard to rouse.  Then we drove to the airport. Dave dropped us off with all the bags while he parked the car at work and cabbed in.  We met up with my uncle then Dave to check bags. Bee felt free checking all the big bags.  We had lots of time to walk around he empty international terminal.  The kids did some worksheets and read before we boarded.  Dave, Brandon and my uncle were in one row, and we were behind them. Peyton didn’t want to sit next to the stranger, so I did. This lady ended up keeping her light on most of the dark flight and moved around more than our kids out together. She had OCD with her blankets and elbowed me through the night. Peyton stayed awake until after our first meal was served then took nap number one.  She did for about 2-3 hours, and I did my best though the lady worked against me.  Peyton woke up and watched a movie on the headset in front of her seat. Then she wanted dried squid that I brought. I thought it might be too stinky so I convinced her to nap again before eating the chestnuts I bought.  She did, and she slept for another two hours.  She woke up and immediately asked for the chestnuts.  She was up for good for the rest of the flight while I was in and out of sleep.  We landed early in the morning in Taipei and had a few hours before our connection.  This was enough time for Dave to find a food court at 7 am. He ordered soup and xiao long bao. Peyton loved it while Brandon said he wasn’t hungry. I got some sweet tofu and  shared that with Brandon. We walked around and found hello kitty stuff, including a cost prohibitive MJ set!!  Finally we were ready to board.  The next flight, Peyton fell asleep on her own.  She was in the middle seat as I’d had enough. We headed to the hotel where my parents were already checked in.  They were in my aunt and uncle’s room waiting for their own room to be ready.  We waited a few hours before we settled in to shower up and head out.  We met up in a food court with Kathleen, Owen and Ellie.  Peyton ate again while Brandon nibbled a bit. She’s turning into an Asian foodie, having selected all the Asian options on our flight while I’d gotten the Western counterparts.  She had congee for breakfast, pork mei fun for lunch, and pork and rice for dinner for our plane meals.  We tried dragon fruit and are in search of mangosteen and wax apples.   Tim met up with us at the food court, so we were able to catch up a bit before we left to get the kids napped before our main dinner.  The plan was to head out to dinner with nine of us, but my parents came back just in time.  Our kids were snoring, so my mom came down to take over watching them while we headed out. When we got to the restaurant, Kathleen, Spencer and Tim were all waiting and were just as surprised to not see our kids as we were not to see theirs.  So five of us caught up on life. Tim is now an organic farmer in Bangkok, but he’s in town for a conference staying with a friend.  His farming business is of interest to Kat and Spencer’s food and beverage business. After dinner, we headed to their office to see their “test beverage kitchen”.  We had coffee to refuel as well as a taste of what spirits they had. We then headed out for another round of drinks at a bar nearby but said bye to Tim who had an early start at a conference.   Kat and I enjoyed fruity drinks while Dave and Spencer had their own.  We stayed out until midnight before returning to relieve my mom who went back to her own room.  The kids half awoke in the transfer and Peyton looked at my mom and said, “Hey, I didn’t know you were here! Big Sister?

Sometimes I think Peyton acts more like a big sister. I picked the kids up from school, and they had their field trip to the park. It was within walking distance, and they were told to wear their hats and sunglasses. The teachers reported to me that Peyton wore her hat and glasses both ways while walking there. Indecision

Peyton is pretty indecisive.  She usually waits for Brandon to make his decision, and she will go from there. Father’s Day

This morning, Peyton came into the room as usual. She hopped up in the bed, then moved to the middle to give Dave a big hug and said, “Happy Father’s Day, Daddy!” She smothered him with kisses, while I got to sleep a bit more. Later, we drove out for coffee for Dave, then up to my parents. We hung out there after making a reservation downtown SM, then we headed out. There was a street faire there, so we walked through it to get to the restaurant. We were early, but the kids were hungry. Brandon was HANGRY! We finally were seated, and we ordered. Brandon ordered a kid’s meal by choice, but he filled up on bread, too. We walked off lunch for a bit, then we headed to Costco for passport pictures. That particular Costco didn’t have a photo set up for passport pictures, so we left after picking up a few things. We headed back to the house to wait for the baseball game to start. I fell asleep, while the kids played. I missed out on breakfast, since Dave and I split a salad and pizza, so we headed out for “breakfast for dinner.” The kids didn’t mind at all, and happily ordered pancakes and turkey sausage. We headed home from there to get the kids showered and ready for our shortened week this week. May these next three days go by painlessly…

Our Day

This morning, we all got up and got ready for the dentist. We somehow convinced the kids that we’d eat AFTER their appointment, which was at 9 am, in addition to the 30 minutes after the fluoride treatment. They agreed, and we headed to the dentist’s as their first wave of visits. We were the first to arrive, followed by two other patients. Brandon was sent for panos, while Peyton got started on her cleaning right away. She didn’t answer the hygienist regarding flavor of toothpaste. Maybe there were too many choices. She looked to Brandon, but the hygienist called her out on it, “What? You’re waiting for your brother to answer so you can get the same thing?” She finally said, “Strawberry.” Another kid was having some procedure done, while the fourth was having a cleaning in the center row of chairs. Peyton was done before Brandon even came back! We didn’t go with him, figuring he’d be okay. Peyton didn’t know he was gone until she sat up and looked around for him. We headed to another place, but it wasn’t open until 11 am, and it was just past 1030 am. So, we tried another place, and the kids each had a bagel sandwich, while Dave had a bulgogi burrito. I was hoping for oatmeal and fruit, so I ended up not getting anything since that wasn’t on the menu. I waited until we got home to eat, then it was naptime. We awoke for Peyton’s bridging/promotion ceremony for girl scouts. It was held at the park, and there was going to be a swim party after, but she didn’t want to participate because of her nails! Such a girl! When we arrived and saw everyone dressed for the pool, she had second thoughts and wanted to go in. She huffed a bit, and then after I told her we’d go back home to change, she changed her tune. The ceremony was quick, and then Dave dropped us back home so we could change and head back. We did just that; luckily, the pool was close to home. She had a great time with her friends. This is the pool where she first took lessons, so it was familiar. However, the diving board was calling her name. I told her she had to take the swim test first. We headed to ask one lifeguard what we needed to do, then she got cold feet. The diving board was open, and the line of kids was about 5-6. After the line cleared, the diving board was closed, and the deep end was open. That is just free swim in the deep area. One of the dads had an underwater camera, so I’d asked him to help me take pictures of her as he was for his own son when he jumped. Finally, it opened up, and she got out to line up. Jake, a third grader, brother of one of the girls, headed over behind her. They waited together until it was their turn, then she went. Her first dive I missed, as I was too busy making sure she had her goggles on and didn’t drown. I had my camera up, but I didn’t push the button. She was a diving machine! The dad showed me one picture where it looked like Peyton’s bottom almost touched the bottom of the pool! She’s a shortie now, so I hope that wasn’t the case! I can’t imagine how far she’d get if she were taller! She started getting more bold, starting back to the end of the board and running up as she saw some of the adults doing.

We had a quiet night home, and then after the kids went to bed, I started to pack. It is quite daunting! I got through Peyton’s stuff, and then I’m working on mine. Brandon’s will be next, then Dave’s on his own! Tomorrow, we’ll celebrate Father’s Day with my dad.

Hugs

Peyton was particularly huggy tonight, taking any opportunity to give me a big bear hug. We drove home for dinner. In the car, I asked her who she missed the most, me, Daddy or Brandon. She said, “I missed Mommy, Daddy, Brandon AND my BED!” She stretched herself out, and just said, “AHHHHH….” They both got to bed much later than I’d intended, but both were stalling in my defenseless of single-parenting after having almost no responsibility in kids this past week. She’s Baaack

Brandon woke up after Dave left for work.  He looked past our room and went downstairs to check things out.  He came back and asked for daddy.  Nope.  Not here.  He then went to play quietly in his room.  I cleaned up a bit before getting worksheets up for him.  I got him breakfast and then he wrote about his baseball experience, then typed it up:

You would want to go because we do a routine every day, so it is not so jumbled up. First, we stretch so we are ready for the day. Then, we do games which are mini scrimmages. After games, we have stations. First, we do center field games which are mini scrimmages. Next, we do outfield where two coaches hit you pop flies and line drives. Next, we do video where we watch little league plays or we practice pitching for parts of the week. Then, we practice hitting where we hit different types of balls. After,we put our stuff away from hitting and go to the infield where three coaches hit ground balls. If you do certain things, you can get baseball cards. Then, we go to the left field game. It is like the center field game but a little different. After, we eat lunch. At lunch, we watch bloopers. After lunch, we stretch, then get to our 16-minute stations, which are just like the morning stations. After, we huddle up and talk. Then, we go home. THAT IS WHY YOU SHOULD GO TO CAMP”

I did get a video of him, too but I’ll have to open that later.  We went to see Jurassic World.  I told him not to “scream like a girl or cry like a baby” if he got scared.  I told him to close his eyes.  Actually there were even younger kids in the movie than he so I wasn’t too worried.  But I did check in with him a few times to see how he was doing.  And warned him not to repeat the words he was hearing.  

After the movie, we went to lunch, then drove up to meet Peyton. Brandon ate almost his bread plus salad and soup, so he out-ate me by the bread. Brandon estimated that there was more soup in a real bowl versus in the bread bowl.   After seeing the movie, Brandon was interested in reading Jurassic Park. We stopped by the library but it wasn’t available as either book or video. I told him I may have a copy at home, but I wasn’t sure if I could find it.  I’d read it as a kid but it’s been a long time ago.

As I opened the front door, Brandon went in first and as soon as I walked in the kitchen, Peyton ran over to me to give me the biggest hug ever!! It was a full embrace.  After she let me go, I went downstairs to look for my clarinet.  Peyton followed me downstairs while I looked. I ended up finding Jurassic Park as soon as I opened my closet door.  It took awhile but I found my clarinet, too!!  I asked her, “Did you have a good time this week?”  She shook her head and sadly said, “No.”  I asked her, “Was it because you missed me?”  She said, “Yeah.”   Haha.  Sweet baby. My mom said everyone in the dinner group or who met Peyton up there told her she was the spitting image of me.  She got her hair cut this morning.  The hairdresser knew she was a swimmer as there was evidence of chlorine in her hair.  We’ll need to get her some special shampoo and get her to wear her cap.
