Thanksgiving weekend

We left Wednesday after work. By the time I’d gotten home, the kids had already practiced piano. We headed out for our first leg. Dave booked a hotel midway through our trip to break it up this time. He stopped for his favorite coffee since GPS diverted him to the coast. How convenient!  We got food and headed out. The kids fell asleep with Peyton out first of course.  We arrived at our first stop at midnight. It was late but the kids woke up quickly. The room we were assigned was given to someone else, and the front staff even called them to wake them up!  We were upgraded to a junior suite with two kings, a fridge and microwave. It had a sitting room with a second tv, but too bad we didn’t stay long.  We slept until 730 and hit the road. We stopped in SB for Dave’s coffee and breakfast. Peyton fell asleep despite only being up for an hour.  She needs her sleep! We got into town around 11 or so. Just a few minutes ahead of the cousins!  Then it was time to eat. We went to a Chinese restaurant which was one of a few open on thanksgiving day. The dads took the kids to the park with Dave’s mom while I went to pick up turkey with Dave’s sister. We all met back at the house, and I tried to get Peyton to nap since we were going out to the basketball game later that night. She was upset that she was the only one having to go down.  She took a power nap for about 20 minutes but was down for at least 40. She woke up and when we went downstairs, we got ready to eat.  The kids decorated ugly sweater cookies first.  Then dinner was served. After dinner and dessert, we left for the game.  The gym was very small so we got up close to the game. Abby was the only one who was very interested in the game. Peyton was next up then Brandon and finally Penelope. At the end, Brandon just said, “I’m tired,” and laid down on Dave. He fell asleep with his eyes half open (how I knew he was asleep).  Peyton hung in there since she had napped.

The kids were all put down to bed and the adults hung out a bit before going to sleep. We got up in the morning to play a bit then the moms went to shop while the dads took the kids to Fry’s for electronics. We met up for lunch after we were all done. After lunch, the cousins packed up to go back to their other grandparents. Our kids were super bored. We had to take them back out. We went to go cart racing.  Dave took each kid for a tandem ride. We came back for left over dinner and watched the second round game.  They only made it to half time before being sent to bed.  This time we went and watched the game in the room with them.

Peyton fell asleep sprawled out across me while Brandon fell asleep on his own side.  When we woke up, we got ready to leave. Another round of food, then we set out. We hit up two outlets, one in the south and one at the end of our trip in the north.  It was a productive shopping trip for us. We also ate dinner at a brewery which Dave had selected. We got home past 11 and the kids showered up and got to bed.

Today, we hung out with Santa who reminded Brandon specifically to pick up the toys in his room and do his homework as asked. I asked Brandon how he knew!  We then spent the rest of the afternoon with my parents for our own thanksgiving.

Another Girl Scout opportunity

Yesterday, while Brandon was at the big game in the rain, Peyton and I got to go to the humane society for a Girl Scout presentation for our Troop.  The docent explained why and when the humane society was established (for horses, 87 years ago in 1929).  But now, they have dogs, cats and rabbits.

We got a tour of the facility and some girls brought donations. We stayed about two hours in total, then we came home to head to the Kong’s for a pre holiday get together. It was nice only having one kid since there were no sibling disagreements that we had to worry about.  We watched the Warriors game then headed to get Brandon. He was cold, wet and tired. Poor kid. He couldn’t stay warm despite having showered. We came home with two tired kids!

Today, we had Peyton’s classmate’s birthday party at a semi outdoor ice skating park. They rented the inside, covered area but there were other kids there, too.  There were snacks and hot chocolate, and Peyton helped her friends by teaching them how to stand once they’d fallen. She was doing a great job on her own skates and even skated backward.
I’d had a talk in the car with her about her worlds colliding in her upcoming basketball season. I found out another girl had asked to be on her team, making it at least 5 girls that she knows from either softball, school and now girl scouts. I reminded her she will know all of the girls, but they may not all know each other. I reminded her that she needs to be a good friend and facilitate all of their learning the game. I told her she can be aggressive and competitive in the tournament play with the boys, as they can probably take it. But with her girl friends, she has to tone it down. Dave thinks he needs a defensive presence in her, but I’m talking about spreading the ball around on the court and including all her friends. At the very least, she should not be the cause of someone else’s tears! So I was super proud of her for helping her friends up when they fell. And not just doing it for them, but SHOWING them. She reminded me that her current coach that it’s not about whether you win or lose, it’s about making the other team SWEAT! She’s practicing dribbling around her back now, and will get stronger with her left hand dribble.

Missing out!

Tuesday was a crazy day!

I worked until 130 then met dave and Brandon back for his parent teacher conference at 2.  He thought it was optional, so he wasn’t happy to be there. The teacher noticed the power struggle and intervened to get him into the room. He stayed with his back to us reading a book before engaging about 15 minutes later when she asked him about the self assessment he’d completed. He kept looking at the clock because he didn’t want to be late for drama tech rehearsal.

We wrapped up and he headed out. I went to the book faire while Dave went to get a coffee and snack. We reconvened for Peyton’s conference. Her teacher says she’s doing well and will give her special projects for a challenge in the next trimester. She said the kids are very different but also somewhat similar.

I went back to drama with Brandon while dave took Peyton home. He said they drove around in search of food but didn’t find much.  He took her to Girl Scouts by 6 while I stayed with Brandon until 630. I was informed of an incident that happened before I got there. He was being provoked by a third grader who said he was married to the chief Indian. He pushed the kid and then got a fist to his nose. It started to bleed but Gs mom helped him clean up.  I was talked to by the assistant director and warned Brandon could be kicked out of the show with another incident. While I was inside talking to him, he was getting involved with another kid about food. I can’t take my eyes off him! I had a talk with him aside and laid into him. He didn’t want to get kicked out of the show. At least it showed he cared.  I watched him like a hawk after that and the rest of the evenin was fine.  I took him home to shower and then turned right around to take him back to school for my PTA meeting. I had to present some info to the parents. Dave wasn’t back yet so Brandon read quietly in the corner just as I’d asked.

I then realized I hadn’t seen Peyton all day long!! I gave her a big hug in the morning then reminded her of missing her piano practice. Dave didn’t remind he. So she snuck in practice in the morning and then again last night.

Brandon did a better job with the show practice yesterday. I was there right after work and had my eye on him.

Today’s the first show!

Headache

While she was reading tonight, Peyton told me she had a headache. She probably didn’t drink enough today, and she did work hard. I was massaging her head as she did with mine when I had a caffeine withdrawal headache. I asked her if it helped, and she said it did. I continued and said, “But you didn’t even have caffeine!” She muttered, “Maybe I should.” Haha…hopefully not. She was so calm; I can’t imagine what caffeine would do to her.

Playdate, basketball and states

This morning, we did piano before anything else, then Peyton and I headed to get donuts to take to our playdate with the Chang kids, Sydney and her brother. We parked by Sydney, so the girls walked in together. We were tagging along on the playdate, as Julie had set it up with Natalie. Peyton was happy to hang out, and the older girls played together, though I reminded Peyton she could not hang on the spinning structures, which continued to lure her. I reminded her what happened at Auntie Bonnie’s house with the egg chair. She kept going back to the structure, but she would get off after a few rotations. I had a basketball for her, and she dribbled and played two square with Sydney for a bit. Another little boy was fascinated with Peyton’s dribbling, then told him in a little voice, “I have my own ball.” He went to get it, and he tried to dribble along with her. He was half her height, and it didn’t matter to either of them. We hung around for a little over an hour and a half, but I was watching time since I wanted to get Peyton home before basketball practice. I reminded her by showing her the time, and she’d count down the number of minutes to go. Luckily, I didn’t have to worry about sibling issues, since hers was at home. She did well playing with the other kids there, and fortunately, she did not get injured. She did try her best, getting thrown off the spinning structure, but she picked herself up and dusted herself off. The final activity was the teeter totter. There were two other kids there, and when our six came in, they promptly vacated. The kids all hopped on however they could get on, and then finally Sydney took over and put everyone in place. This was the result, with the adjustment by Peyton, who said, “Wait, let’s sit like this!” (crossing her legs out in front of the seesaw):

see-saw

Peyton and I rushed home and Dave had just gotten home with bento boxes. I quickly got food in her, then she changed. I reminded her to not throw a fit at practice, and she agreed. Little did I know that only 7 kids would show up to practice. That meant lots of repetition. Meaning, LOTS of running! Peyton likes shooting and getting open, so she ran a lot to try to get good shots. Then, she’d hustle back to be part of the next 5 to go. They would always have two free kids, and then the first three to get back were put back in the rotation. She was all sweaty and pink! She came over for a water break, and I encouraged her to keep it up, with a hug. When I hugged her, my hand touched her shirt, and it was WET! I don’t think she’s run that much in awhile. During water breaks, she was practicing and showing me her around the back passes.  She was going right to left, then dave told her to go left to right. She was embarrassed to show him but then started to try left to right.  She’s getting it! We wrapped up after just under two hours, and then we took them for acai bowls. While we were waiting for our bowls, I was flipping through FB. A friend was coming up with puns about states. But I truly needed help identifying them to get the jokes! I showed them to Peyton to test her, and lo and behold, she was able to name them all!

Veteran’s Day

This year, Veteran’s Day fell on a Friday, so I didn’t have to burn vacation for it.
Dave brought Peyton to me the night before so I could extend my sleep, while he slept downstairs as he had an early tee time. But, it failed, as he forgot something and woke us up at 615 am before he left. Peyton never went back to sleep, and thus began an early morning. I kept her quiet enough until Brandon woke up, 12 hours after he’d fallen asleep. I think he’s hit a growth spurt, or he is reading under his covers. I did check the night before, and I did not observe any signs of life. But he likes to sleep with the cover over his head, so I’ll never know what really happened. We woke up and made pumpkin pancakes. I did a little fractional math, as we were doubling the recipe. Most of it was easy to double, but it was an exercise for both of them. They helped measure and mix up the ingredients, then both made their own pancakes. Each of them enjoyed them thoroughly, and then piano was practiced before we headed out to the park. This is our fourth or fifth year running now, at least. We sat in our favorite spot, on the wall. Both kids had books to keep them entertained. We got there about an hour before, and I wanted to go return our library books. I presented Brandon with the dilemma that if we returned the books, it would be about 20 minutes round trip, and we may risk our favorite spot as well as a parking spot farther away. Brandon asked me, “Why would we do that? Let’s just wait!” So we waited almost an hour. They kept each other pretty well entertained with minimal intervention on my part. Soon, the ceremony started. This is the 10th anniversary of the program. It was most solemn as the mother of one of the victims spoke with her story, sometimes through tears. The two kids were respectful and gave their attention to the speakers. The program lasted about an hour and a half. I saw Dave come up just as the ceremony was starting, and he stood behind us through a few rows of people for the remainder of the ceremony. I didn’t want to tell the kids, otherwise, they would come unglued. They kept it together until the end, and then I walked back to Dave. We walked over to lunch, as we have after every ceremony. This is the first Dave has ever been to. We saw something a bit different. Last year, the flags were held in a stand, but the wind knocked them over and then the color guard ended up standing watch through the rest of the ceremony. This year, the color guard stood at attention to hold the flags. But, the flag and the color guard fell down! We couldn’t see the second color guard woman, but suddenly, we saw the man, trying to hold up his flag, her flag and her! Luckily, the fire and paramedics and other first responders were on the scene (generally for the veterans!). She fell to the ground on top of grass, detail that didn’t get past Brandon. It took a few minutes but they carried her off, with a clap. I was guessing to the kids what it could have been – low blood pressure. Low blood sugar. They did change out the posts every 15 minutes or so; we were watching that, too, as relief would come with a shoulder tap. The kids had brunch and enjoyed their eggs and sausage. I did tell them no pancakes, since we had them earlier in the morning.

We went home and they got to play on their own for a bit. Dave had ordered food in, while we watched UCLA basketball play.

This morning, we did piano, and then we took the kids to swim at an indoor gym down south. I did some treadmill, while Dave watched them in the water. There was a big slide, which they took turns going up and down. Dave figured they did it at least 20 times each, getting lots of exercise going up the flights of stairs. An hour later, he called me back to help shower them up. We then went to eat BBQ before going to the outlets to shop some more. We stopped by the bass pro shops. It was our first time there! But bad timing as it was Santa’s first stop for the season. It was super crowded. But we did get some hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies.
