Stellar Day!

We woke up early for Peyton’s 8 am game. Dave and she left first, while Brandon and I headed over to the gym a few minutes later. Coach wanted them there at 720 am, however when we got there, we weren’t allowed in the gym yet. That prompt a rude awakening from our coach to the gym coordinator, who was headed over. They negotiated 10 minutes of warm up time inside the gym. In the meantime, Dave went over the game plan with the girls in the lobby of the gym. They were playing against Peyton’s former softball teammates, who had decided to play together and NOT with Dave and Ryan. So, we wanted to crush this team! Two of the softball girls (from the league that we left) had never played basketball before, and the girl that was choosing them over us is shorter and slower than Peyton.

Peyton and H play on opposite teams of 5 within the team. So, they were assigned to guard that girl depending on which team was on the floor. The other team only had 8, so C, our friend on the other team, got to play a bit. She was one of their best ball handlers, but she couldn’t get through H and P. H’s mom noticed that C was frustrated as the ball was stolen quite a bit. Peyton was on her game today, mouth guard in, and ready to play. H’s mom gave her a knowing pep talk before the game to which Peyton gave a resounding nod.

They started out strong and never looked back. Peyton was capped after she scored 7 baskets. Then she was relegated to passing. Her current softball coach congratulated her on being a team player, as she had an open shot and passed to her teammate. I don’t know that he knew she had been shut down by the scorer’s table. But at some point, she was crying. Dave had to leave midway through to take Brandon to baseball evals. So at the end, when everyone was congratulating her on the win, she was teary-eyed. Ryan said he didn’t know what was going on, and that Dave didn’t either before he left. I got her in the car, and asked her to tell me what happened. They won 44 to 26, so there was definitely nothing to cry about. She still wouldn’t tell me, so as I was eating a mint, I bribed her with one. She started talking like Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth was around her! She said that there was a whistle blown, and that she stopped, but the other team, namely the point guard, didn’t stop and blew right by her, scoring the basket. She said Dave told her “you are dumb.” Then she started crying again. She made me promise not to tell Dave, but I was a bit upset by this, so I had to tell him, and let her know that I told him. I marched up to him and told him while he was waiting at Brandon’s evals the story. He said he never said that. She was already crying when he talked to her, frustrated that the refs allowed the basket to count when half of her team just stopped in their tracks because they all heard a whistle from the other game. But his story was that he saw that she was crying and said that it was dumb for her to be crying, as again, they were up by so many points.
She got over it, and at least I got it cleared up, with a few more hugs for her. She was fine watching Brandon’s evals until it was time to go to her free jazz class.

She was okay with it since she knew her friend would be there. Actually, two friends. But then another showed up, a fourth grader, and she was totally fine with it. Oh, and I bribed her. On our way to the class, I told her that if she tried hard, and did her best, then I’d get her something special. She asked me what. I asked her what she wanted. We were passing Hobee’s, and she said, “OH, coffee cake from Hobee’s.” “Sure”, I said, “I can make that happen if you do your best.” So, she did! She did great! She did what she was asked, followed the other girls; she wasn’t first, but she was second, right behind her friend, so I know she was motivated. There was one dad that squeezed in between the moms to find his daughter. He pointed to his daughter, and pointed to her to get out there. She shook her head adamantly. That was us 6 years ago, but glad we’re passed that. And that this was a free class, so he wasn’t losing the money that I did for ‘princess ballet’. The hour went by quickly, as we moms were just chatting outside the class. The girls all came out with smiles on their faces. And went to get snacks, also promised on the advertisement for the class.

They allowed us to take pictures of them, and then we went our separate ways. I headed to Dave, who was now at softball evals, looking at the old league to see if we made the right choice pulling Peyton out. Dave whole-heartedly felt right about the choice, even talking to the league president. We stayed shortly, then headed to get lunch, meeting one of our softball family friends. Their daughter played with Peyton in the fall on the travel team, and will return to the league due to time commitments. The kids all sat together, while the parents all ate together and reviewed the evals. When we were all done, we wrapped up, and headed home.

Peyton finished up her mandala, that she’d been working on in class. She finished piano, and then Brandon left for basketball practice. I had to make good on the hobee’s promise, but after I went to the gym. Peyton was excited to join me. We set up on two treadmills, side by side, and I told her to clip in and do 2 miles. She clipped in, had my ear buds, and listened to the food network. But, she kept fiddling with the ear buds and turned off the treadmill, resetting it, twice. She finally did get her two miles in, which she had to piece together using math. Then, I asked her if she wanted to try the elliptical or the bike. She chose elliptical. I asked her if she wanted to do 10 minutes, and she said, “No, like 20!” So, we went! I had the ear buds this time, as I didn’t want to distract her from the task at hand. She was a little shaky on the pedals, so I told her to hold on to the stationary handles. She chose the moving handles. I was listening to a PBS special on classical music. Gershwin came on, and I wanted her to listen, so I was going to hand her my buds. She got overconfident, took her hand off the handle, and started to lean. She leaned too much, and she went down, slowly, like in slow motion. I quickly grabbed the moving handle where her right hand would have been, luckily, I positioned us right, as I had it in my left hand. I stabilized her so she wasn’t rocking and getting caught between the stairs. She was able to get up, and that was how we completed the 20 minutes. I asked her if she was alright, and if she wanted to go home. She said she was fine, and she wanted to ride the bike. I thought with the bike, she’d only want to ride 10 minutes, but she found suduko! So she said she wanted to ride 20 minutes. She’s like my mini personal trainer, as I would have left after my 2.5 miles!

We stopped by hobee’s, got her two slices of cake (one for her, and one for three of us to share). She got to eat half of it after her shower and will save the other half for tomorrow. She has a softball scrimmage, at 10 am, arrival by 9 am. Then has basketball practice at 12 pm until 130 pm. Brandon has evals at 2 pm for a possible Cooperstown team, and then a game at 330 pm, and at 5 pm, I get to go to dinner with the girls. The day is all laid out already, and I’m tired just thinking of it!

Raise your hand

Peyton’s GA troop took a pledge to earn their “Raise Your Hand” badge. It was started by a Girl Scout who noticed boys always raise their hands while many girls do not. I know that Peyton is one of those girls.

Peyton said her teacher has cards and calls out kids’ names so there isn’t a lot of hand-raising. She said. So I told her I’d reserve her badge until I saw her raise her hand.

I hadn’t been around her much in school to know if she did, so it’s been a few months. Today I went to school to help out the art teacher. We were listening to Gregoriano Chants and learning about Michaelangelo.

The docent started out the lesson asking if anyone could name the teenage mutant Ninja turtles. I was glueing papers next to where Peyton was sitting and suddenly her hand shot up in the air. He called on her, and she answered, “Michaelangelo!” She cheated a bit as the sheets I was glueing contained a blurb about him. And she doesn’t answer unless she knows she’s 100% right. But nevertheless, the hand went up as she wanted to be called on. Now, I’ll have to sew that thing on soon enough.

The Crash

Yesterday, Peyton had practice at 6 pm. I got her and got home before 5 pm; she changed and Dave had come home during that time as well. We all went to get Brandon just after 5 pm from volleyball practice. We headed to practice taking a different way than last week. Last week by freeway took us almost an hour. We took surface streets, and we were stop and go on the street. Dave stopped, but unfortunately, the car behind us kept going. Dave said he saw it happening, so he took his foot off the brake. I was just trying to go to sleep, as I still had another 20 minutes of naptime. We were in the middle lane, so I asked the kids to turn around and get the license plate number in case the person tried to bolt. Dave moved over, and then motioned for her to move over with us. She obliged, and pulled in front of him, while we pulled behind her. Dave went to go get her information, while I called the police, as Dave wanted a report. The police told us if no injuries, then just exchange information. The lady didn’t speak much ENglish, and called her husband and gave her phone to Dave. She didn’t have insurance. She didn’t have a driver’s license. Nothing. Dave was on the ground trying to inspect the undercarriage of the car, but I told him it wasn’t worth it, lying in the street (though it was the side street). He started getting more upset with the man on the phone, and though I’d hung up with the police by now, I was going to call them back. I did get a hold of them a second time to tell them we were hit by an uninsured driver, and that she was giving us problems in terms of giving us her information. That’s when I was transferred to dispatch, and they were going to send someone out to us. She heard that the police were coming and she kept repeating, “Oh my god, oh my god.” I wouldn’t look her in the eye, and I was pacing away from our car. The kids were both inside, and surprisingly quiet. It was dusk now, and they were mostly obscured inside, but could see all that was going on with us. Dave didn’t see anything wrong with the car from what he was able to, but he did call the phone number back to confirm it was who they said it was. Dave called off the dispatched officer, and we let the lady go. Dave didn’t want to wait around as we were already late for practice. I texted Peyton’s coach to let him know we’d be late and more importantly why. His last words to us at Sunday’s practice was “don’t be late!” We aren’t on the weekends, but the weekdays are a bit harder. When we arrived at practice 20 minutes late, I walked in with the kids while Dave parked the car. Coach didn’t say anything to me, other than hi, and he instructed Peyton to get her stretches in before hitting. When Dave came in later with dinner, coach asked him, “You playing bumper cars out there?” Brandon had my laptop there and worked on his English project, while Dave and I ate. Later, Brandon ate.

We got home after 830 pm, and Brandon was washing up his dishes from lunch. I was getting Peyton her dinner, and she was just starting to eat. I noticed the kitchen light was out, so Dave went to get the replacement bulb upstairs. He was changing it over the sink when he reached for it, and it popped, spraying glass everywhere! Brandon freaked out and turned around, but by that time, there was glass on the floor! I shouted for him to stay still (seriously…it’s Brandon, how is that even possible?!). I got the vacuum and started getting the area around him, while Dave went to get the other vacuum and did the rest of the kitchen. There was glass under our kitchen table. Peyton was still eating, slowly, watching it all unfold. I told Brandon to just leave the dishes, while I sent him up to bed. Peyton still had piano to do, which she did after showering up. All in all, the kids were in bed before 10 pm, which is earlier than last week.

I wondered how she knew but she said Brandon texted G to tell her. G’s response was, “What the heck? Why are you texting me?” Later she wrote back, “My mom wants to know if you are okay.” I’d already texted her mom that we were all fine and sorry for the alarm. Apparently Brandon’s guy friend was also texted. And his response was “What?!?!? R u ok?” No wonder it was so quiet in the car.

They slept well, and late, until 720 am.
Today was an “early” day, so I picked Peyton up first. Brandon texted that he was done, and I told him to sit tight as I was coming from CDC. I got him and we were home just after 5 pm. Both asked what they needed to do tonight. Dave was late in coming home, so they showered and did their homework until he did. BOth kids were sent to bed before 730 pm. Brandon willingly, while Peyton lagged, but went. I couldn’t believe they slept so early, but I guess they were tired. Tomorrow, Brandon has a game at 345 pm, Peyton has piano from 245 pm to 330 pm, and then basketball practice from 5-630pm. Never a dull moment. Is it Friday yet?

An Extra Day

We got so much more done on this extra long weekend! Peyton practiced piano early this morning, then I dropped her off at a birthday party at 11 am. It was a tea party theme, so she “dressed” up a bit. I had a hat for her, but she was not happy to wear it.

I told her to bring it, if others were wearing one, then she would wear it. When we got there, we were informed they were making head pieces, so I kept the hat. Oh, and slime, so I left the apron.

Brandon and I went to the grocery store, while Dave changed the oil in both cars. We then went to Indian food, as Peyton doesn’t like spicy food. Funny, the family that was hosting the tea party is Indian, and they were serving tea sandwiches. We got home, and Dave was sweeping the leaves, while I told Brandon I was going to pick her up. I think since she’s been gone now twice over the weekend, he gets totally bored without her. He won’t admit it. Ever. But he looks forward to her return. So, he happily came with me to go get her. She showed us her headband, polaroid photo of her and the bday girl, and the cookie favors. Oh, and the slime. She changed her clothes, and the kids were playing. But, it got too quiet, and then Brandon said, “Go tell Mommy,” while Peyton said, “Ok, I’m going to tell Mommy.” She was giggling, and then told us they were playing hide and go seek, and she fit into the dryer. Dave was super mad, as that is a new dryer, and it was not designed to hold her kind of weight. Sigh. We went to get some car parts at the dealership, to the mall to potentially return a sweater that Brandon received, only to find out, without a receipt, it was not worth returning. Then, we all went to the gym. I’d called ahead and asked what the minimum age for treadmills and other cardio equipment. I was told it was at least 8. Perfect! Brandon was excited to run, while Peyton was a bit hesitant. I stood next to her while she got started. At 2 mph. She was walking funny, and I told her to walk normally. She got used to it, after Dave had clipped her in to make sure the emergency break-away mechanism was engaged. She was excited to watch Tv, so the two kids were talking across my treadmill (I didn’t want them together) to compare tv stations. Brandon was fine, as Dave was on his other side. He was running at a max of 6.7 mph. I wanted them to run at least 2 miles. Peyton was fiddling with her clip, and accidentally stopped the machine. She continued, but I think she was the last to finish up. She had to add up the two pieces of her workout. Lesson learned for her. While we were walking out of the parking lot, I asked her how she liked it. She said she did, and I told her she ran 2 miles! One more mile, and she’d have run a 5K! She was super excited. I reminded her that she didn’t even throw up! Both kids were weirded out thinking that, even though they were in the parking lot, they still felt they were on a treadmill running. Brandon wanted to run more! It’ll help with their conditioning, especially, as Peyton was struggling during her basketball games.

We ended with dinner out, and going to a Japanese grocery store for some items. Short week ahead!

Things he says

My friend, from way back in high school, and I were texting each other. It’s been a very long time since we had a chance to catch up. I was telling her that Brandon has been going to his middle school dances, but it’s not for the girls. It’s for the food! He’s gone to two, and each time he was pulled out by Dave for baseball. His biggest “news” from the first dance was that they sell food for $0.25! Like pizza, chips, soda. Ugh, really? He didn’t have his own money, but he has friends, who have money. Brandon said, “Yeah, weed. It’s not good for you.” Well, at least he knows.

Parallel conversations

Yesterday before the jamboree, Peyton asked me for one of the tank top underwear tops to wear under her basketball jersey. She normally wears a white t-shirt. I’d bought some for her for summer time under her softball gear. I asked her why she wanted the tank top when it was going to be cold inside the gym as we were the first game.
