Last Weekend Games

This morning, we did a few workbook pages, then Brandon and Dave left for Brandon’s game. Peyton and I worked on telling time. She got into it, but she also got very frustrated. We walked to Brandon’s game, though Peyton was very reluctant. She had lots of spring in her step when we played a new game – “Guess the Princess!” She was even skipping, trying to keep up with me. We were early, as the game before us was still going on. We set up our chairs, and another dad was keeping score, relieving me from doing it. I thought I was having to do it, so I was sure to get there early. The team hung in there, but the most exciting part of the game was Brandon pitching again. He had a strike out even! This is progress. He is throwing side-arm, so we’re going to have to fix that. Dave is going to sign him up for pitching lessons, so he can learn the right way. As soon as Brandon was done, Peyton had her game. Dave took her while I escorted Brandon to get his snack shack. He chose a snow cone, which was perfect, as it was really warm out today. We headed over to Peyton’s game, and she was motivated to get a snow cone, too. I knew it was going to be rough on her, as the game started at 130pm. She had NO nap, NO food, and had already sat through Brandon’s game. She even hit without the tee, and got on base out right! Great way to end the season!! She went to get her snow cone, and then we hurried home to change into our swimming clothes. The team was meeting up at the local cabana club for the end of the season party. The kids were all in the pool, and ours joined them. The deepest is 5 feet in the long part of the L, then the short part was 9 feet. I went in with Peyton, who was trying her hardest to keep up with the big kids. I ended up playing with her away from the group, while Brandon hung in there with his peers. He had to tread water, and ended up scoring some flippers which helped him swim. I wasn’t worried about him until he ducked under the rope, and he was swimming around in the 6-9 foot area. Since it was so crowded, it was hard to watch both him and Peyton. Dave got him back in the main part of the pool, and then I ignored him again.  Peyton was jumping into the deep end of the pool, right in the mix.  She’s actually able to get to the wall again, but I just worried about the big kids getting in her way, and her freaking out.  Later, when it was just her, and I’d already dried off, I let her do it by herself.  I really didn’t want to go in and save her, but I was still watching her.  She’s really comfortable in the water now, and even in 4 feet of water, she can push off the bottom and get herself up to a back float.  Finally, she got out, and the kids both ate.  There was basketball and ping pong, too.  The kids ate a lot of strawberries, watermelon, oh, and chips.  Lots of chips. They went nuts with the chips.  Granted, we skipped lunch, so they needed some food in them.  We came home, and everyone showered up.We’re hoping for an easy night, as the kids are tired out.  We have another busy day tomorrow, but for now, the kids are watching Free Birds. One of Peyton’s teammates had her #4 in the stroller, asleep, before heading over to take pictures of her #2 playing on Peyton’s team.  Problem was the 5 month old wasn’t totally asleep when she put him down, and the cheering woke him up.  He was crying, and I rocked the stroller without success, and tried to play with him, and again, no luck.  So, I picked him up (something I don’t normally do, especially with those I don’t know well, but she’s really low key), and as soon as I did, he stopped crying.  She didn’t know he was up and out until after Yoav was up.  At this point, she saw me and was surprised he’d gotten up.  She said whenever I was tired, I could put him back, or she welcomed me to him as well 🙂  I took her up on the latter, and I held him the rest of the half-inning the kids were up.  Brandon wanted to come over and see what was going on, and he thought it was funny that he was asleep.  Peyton didn’t notice anything, and I’d put him down before she came over.  Dave looked up, and then he looked stunned, as if to check to make sure the baby wasn’t coming home with us.  Then, both parents warned the boys not to wake the baby up, and if they did, they’d have to put him back down.  Brandon backed away quickly!  Later, while we were watching Free Birds, Peyton crawled into my lap.  I held her like a baby, and I was telling her about Yoav’s baby.  She was curious and wanted to know what I’d done to get him back to sleep, how he fell asleep, how I held him, over my left or right shoulder, whether he played with my necklace, and whether he was right or left handed (of all things).  She even suggested I ask his mommy whether he were left or right handed.

Full Day; International Night

This morning, I dropped Peyton off with Brandon, then headed to Brandon’s school. Brandon signed the Thank You card for his teacher in the office, then I went to sign out my book for the class. There was an extra long flag salute, and when it was done, I headed to my car to study for the reading. 30 minutes later, I headed to Brandon’s class for my last reading session of the year! It went well, and I handed out each child’s certificate that Dave helped me make. It was a great experience, and a great way to meet all of Brandon’s classmates. After, I headed to meet with our leadership team in the multi-purpose room for next week’s thank you coffee/breakfast. After an hour-long meeting, I headed to the gym. I was on a mission to run 5k, and I did so quickly (for me). I got it to 9:10 per mile. Then, I headed to shower up before heading back to get Brandon. We headed to 85 degrees for him to pick out a pastry for himself as well as Peyton. We headed home for him to do a book online, then picked out some books online. He is into “You Wouldn’t Want to Be” books, and when I looked up the AR levels, I agreed with him to get them. So, we went to the library, and we searched for several different books. We ended up with a whole bag full of books, both for Brandon and Peyton, too. We headed over pick Peyton up, who was in the middle of their monthly birthday party. We took her veggies to go, but I told her no more sweets (she had just inhaled a pre-wrapped brownie), and had a sugar cookie on her plate. I’d mentioned to her teacher how she’s been throwing up after eating too many sweets lately. We headed over to swim class, and I had both kids change in the car. Brandon immediately saw some friends, and went to play soccer, while we walked around with Peyton. We tried foods from around the world, but Peyton wasn’t too interested. There were many desserts, but some savory dishes, too. Finally, Brandon caught up with us, saying he got hit with the ball. We kept losing Peyton, who was drawn to the performers. She could care less about the food! Dave doesn’t like potluck style food either, so he sat with Peyton to watch the Korean drumming, and later African drumming. Brandon was hungry, and he walked around trying everything. He even saw the Scotland booth, and was almost going to try haggis! Dave did, but said it was bland. Brandon didn’t take it, but opted for the shortbread instead. I don’t even think he knew what he had just missed. Dave was done after the African dancing, and we headed back to the car. More Pictures!

Peyton’s friends reminded her to get her art file cleared as I was getting her sweatshirt from her cubby. When I turned around, she had appeared with her big pile of art. I’d not looked through her sight word packet either, so today, I sifted through her papers.   Here are some more of her pictures that she was so excited for me to see. She loves her some Ariel! Today, I picked Peyton up, and then met Dave at Brandon’s game only to switch kids.  Peyton hopped out of one car, and jumped into another, while I walked back over to Brandon and the team, who were warming up.  I was all set with my new bleacher chair, before Coach Tom asked, “Is  your daughter here?”  Of course, he knew that Dave had left for her practice. I told him I did not, and he asked to have me manage the dug out.  That meant I had to keep track of the batting order, and the kids in the dugout.  I didn’t want to mess up, as I’ve seen it happen when the kids don’t know who is up next, so I really had to keep track.  I kept texting Dave updates, including the triple play that was made against our team 🙁  Fortunately, Brandon had nothing to do with it.

Memorial Day

Today, we hung around home in the morning. Dave went off with Peyton to get some electronics, while I cleaned up the house with Brandon. Brandon really wanted to go see Big Brandon play in his baseball tournament this afternoon. I wanted Peyton to sleep, but she mentioned that she wanted to go to the game, too. She went off to nap, while Brandon watched the rest of a movie. Dave came down around 230 pm, after installing the software, and asked if we were all going. I had planned for just them to go, but Dave didn’t want to leave Peyton out. So, I went to get her, asleep and all, and dropped her into the car. She was so asleep, even pulling back the covers didn’t faze her. It was a quick trip there, and the only problem was us not being able to find the right field they were playing. I was able to text Jeannie, and in the meantime, Dave found the right field. The game was about half way over, but the kids were happy to watch. Rest of the Tournament!

This morning, the playoff game was set for 10 am. Brandon and Dave left around 830 am to get there for early practice. We ended up walking after I fed Peyton breakfast. I’d packed the ipad, and this time Frozen was alive and well. In order for the team to play the second game, they would have to pull out the win against the team that beat them yesterday afternoon, 16-2. Based on those results, I wasn’t planning to stay more than one game. Oh ye, of little faith. Though we were the visiting team, based on record, we started out strong, with hot bats. We ended the inning with one run. Brandon batted 3rd and he advanced the runner, but got out himself. His second up, he got on base. With this higher caliber team, it was truly nerve-wracking to watch the game. Every out counted, and the league’s pride was at stake! Peyton almost watched the entire movie, and the team was up by 3 runs by the 6th inning. The team had to put together a good defensive stand to beat their opponent. They made the outs to close out the inning, and all the kids celebrated! This is one of Brandon’s few tastes of victory this season. I think only his fourth win (two with our own team, one when he was loaned to another and this). That meant that the kids got a 20 minute break before heading back on to the field. He wasn’t hungry at first, then he got hungry right as the break was drawing to a close. It took too long to make the cheeseburger, and by the time it was done, the team was back on the field to warm up. They had to beat the other team that they’d lost to the first game yesterday. It was a narrow margin yesterday, having lost in the 6th inning, after going into it with a lead. This game was another tough battle. I couldn’t watch in the stands with Peyton, who wanted to go back and forth between the stands and where Dave was seated at the end of the dugout. Finally, the batter before Brandon was up (the batting order was flipped around the second game, so Brandon was third from the last to bat), and Peyton told me she had to go potty. I rushed her to the potty in time to see Brandon bat. I couldn’t film it, but he got a base hit. He ran to first, then turned the corner only to get stuck in a pickle! He was running back and forth, and I could tell he was getting tired because he was slowing down. The first baseman decided to run him down, and only then did Brandon speed up and tag second for the safe play. It was so close! Later, while on base, Brandon got a stern talking-to from the head coach, as he wasn’t looking to his third base coach for signals to run. Apparently he was told yesterday, and then told again earlier today. The coach had had it by the third time, and he let Brandon, and the rest of the team and other coaches, and other team, and fans, know it! The score was within a few runs each inning. Finally, at the top of the 6th inning, Brandon’s team was leading and there was pizza on the line. If they won the tournament, they were going to get a pizza party. But the other team put up score after score. Brandon was on the bench for the last two innings, and honestly, I was all the better for it.  When I used to play co-ed softball with Dave or anytime growing up, I’d always hope that the ball never came to me, especially if I was in the outfield.  Now, when Brandon is in the outfield, I hope that the ball doesn’t come to HIM, too.  It’s too much pressure!  He’s not reliable like the other kids.  He definitely needs more fielding practice.  I know he will get better, as he had some close plays, but too much was riding on this!  By this time, Dave and I were sitting away from the other parents, with Peyton in between our camping chairs, watching TV.  The other team pulled ahead one run at a time, and even though there was 1 out, the team couldn’t hold it, and the winning run scored.  There was a controversial play, and the runner had to go back, but again, they couldn’t be stopped.  The coach did encourage the players, and he encouraged them all to return this summer to play.  He told them not to return their jerseys just yet.  We had a hard time getting Brandon to leave, but Jeannie had texted me that big Brandon was playing baseball at the big baseball complex nearby.  We wanted Brandon to see big league 12 year olds play.  Peyton fell asleep in the car, so I waited with her, while Brandon and Dave went in to watch.  Peyton woke up about 30 minutes later, and she was cranky!  She had issues putting on her socks (they were too small), then she couldn’t get her shoes on (they were too tight, too).  Both of these fit two days ago, but she was moving from Crocs to shoes, and that proved too much for her.  After her meltdown, and subsequent putting back together, she was ready.  We met Jeannie, Dave and Brandon walking toward us to look at the baseball schedule, then we headed back to watch Brandon’s game.  The kids were so much taller than what we’ve been used to seeing!  Brandon was happy to watch for a few innings, then he got a bit bored.  Peyton already was set up with the ipad, so she was happy. I just had to worry about foul balls coming in our direction, as one had come flying off and almost hit us!  Brandon’s team won, and we congratulated him and the team.  We walked out together, and then headed off to dinner on our own.  Peyton’s treat for sitting all day long was ice cream.  Brandon had won it (consolation prize to the pizza party), so he didn’t get any.  Peyton selected the “rose water ice” one, mostly because it was pink.  Brandon still got to eat some of the fruit but less of the ice.  Now, both kids are down for the count, before 8 pm, capping off a super long day of baseball.  We’re hoping Brandon wants to learn more, and will continue to want to play during the summer!
