Fall Festival and Parade

Yesterday was a long day. I started by not knowing that I had Dave around. I planned to take the kids with me to get donut holes (20 dozen of them for the volunteers!). He said he’d be around, so he went to go get donuts while I got the kids ready in their costumes. I met Dave at school in line to see the parade. It was raining, so the route was through the multi and around one loop. There was a path for the parents, and we were on the inside track just outside the multi. The whole school can’t fit all at once, so we had the older kids come through first, then the younger kids. Both were a bit disappointed not being able to see the opposite group of kids, but they did fine. I dropped Peyton off at her class, since it was actively raining. She wanted to line up as usual and was happy to have been first. Before she realized no one was lining up. I waited until H arrived to take a twinsies picture before going to Dave.

We spent the next hour or so just hanging around before the kids all went back to class and set up for the fall festival began. I was in charge of delegating and checking in volunteers. I did some set up as well, and after the rain stopped, I squeegeed the ground to get rid of big puddles. I got to see Peyton at recess, as the kids were let out to run around outside of the set up area. Lunch was eaten in the classrooms since the multi was being used for the festival. Soon, it was 1245 pm, and the kids were released. Both kids knew how to find me, as I was at the volunteer station. But somehow they would know anyways, since I held their tickets. Dave was manning the grill, supervising and grilling meat himself. So, the kids were on their own, going around with their friends. They would check in and out with me, and I asked them to line up with Dave for the second magic show. I snuck in to watch with them, and ended up being pulled up “on stage”. He asked for my ring (same guy Dave has invited to two holiday parties). He did a trick which ended up being attached to his wallet key ring. As I was being pulled up, I heard whispers in the crowd (“That’s Peyton’s mom”). They later said both of them told their respective friends “That’s our mom.” Embarrassing! Luckily, he did give it back 🙂

After the magic show, we had about 15 more minutes remaining, then it was clean up time. We helped clean up a bit, then it was time to get going, since Peyton had basketball practice. We came home, had her change, then took them out to feed them Greek food. We made it to practice early, and they got to shoot around a bit. We had a new parent orientation meeting, so Brandon hung out with G. The meeting lasted about 45 minutes before we came back inside. Brandon and G were out in the back playing two square, while their dad was helping out the girls. They had to get to G’s practice, so they left a bit early. Brandon came back in and said they were talking to some middle school kids who go to the school on that campus. They were telling them all about their campus, so much so that Brandon said he should transfer there! After we were done, we headed to dessert nearby and ran into another teammate of Peyton’s who’d just left practice, too. After that, Peyton needed to practice piano so as not to break her streak. It was about 9 pm, but we couldn’t miss a day or she’d have to start all over again. She’s motivated enough to keep the streak alive, so we got it done.

This morning, we practiced again, and then it was Brandon’s turn. We had a lazy Saturday until the Halloween party for Peyton’s basketball league. We went after eating at home, and there were snacks there. There were also carnival games, a raffle, and crafts. They took part in it all, following each other around. Peyton did leave Brandon’s side when she saw some of her friends/teammates. After the games were done, they turned their tickets in for prizes. Dave bought 6 raffle tickets for $5, and we waited for the raffle. They drew one ticket to be saved for the grand prize, then proceeded to pick numbers for the rest of the 20 or so prizes. We were disappointed with our luck, with the kids trying to see who would go up if we won. Finally, it was the grand prize time, an iPad mini! There were a few series of tickets, with different colors. Luckily, our ticket color was selected. The emcee read off the first 5 numbers, all of which matched our ticket! He had a small drumroll before calling out the last number – 8. Dave had the ticket! He popped up and collected our prize. Since we’re new to the organization, I’m sure no one knew who we were, just a few friends from school, softball, and our team. We sheepishly collected the gift, while Brandon was loudly celebrating like it was going to be HIS ipad. It was a great way to end our day 🙂

School work

While they do not have homework per se, Peyton’s class is plenty busy at school.

They held an election voting on their favorite animals. She learned about the election process, and eventually learned “ballot” is NOT “ballet”.

And finally, she wrote a letter. To her new favorite player, KD. Kershaw is no longer on her radar…baseball season is over. It’s on to basketball.

Sports Sunday

This morning, we were out the door by 830 am. The kids were playing with legos first thing in the morning, but we didn’t have much time. We got Peyton ready for her line up of events. We had snack duty for practice yesterday, and then we had snack duty for basketball practice.

But first, we headed to one field, then changed course for the one I had listed in my calendar. When we arrived, we saw the other coach of the other 10U team, then realized we were at the wrong field (the original one). I had the time right, but not the field in my calendar. So instead of being 15 minutes early, we were 10 minutes late. Ugh. Not a happy camper from Dave. We were not the last to arrive, but still, that doesn’t cut it. We got her warmed up, and she got into her routine. Brandon played with the other brothers on the team – one was his age! and the other is a first grader. Boys seem to be able to play with whatever boy is there without any problems.

Peyton was lead-off batter again, and she drew two walks. She played right field, and knew to back up first on her plays. Even though she doesn’t quite like the outfield, she now knows she has to play whenever the coach asks her to. They played 3 innings, and then they were done. We headed to the team party after taking a few team pictures. We ordered ahead of time to save time for us and beat the rest of our team. We ate and watched the coach speak something nice about each player. He got them beanie babies to choose as he called them up one by one. He was offering encouragement to Dave to coach next fall, and he would help out. He enjoys working with this age kids, though I don’t know if Dave will want to take this on.

We showed up at practice, and I helped her change from softball gear to basketball clothes. I fixed her hair again, and then she was on to sport #2. She was called up to lead her team in drills today. She didn’t show any signs of being tired, which was great. We made it through practice, then went and did some grocery shopping before returning home.

After an early dinner, we got the kids to bed before 730 pm. It’s been a long day!

Debates?

When I picked the kids up from school, Peyton asked me if we could watched the presidential debates at 6 pm. I was a bit surprised, but I wanted to have her engage. They are learning about the government, so she wanted to listen more. She was reading when it started, but I turned it on by 630 or 645. Luckily, we had just passed the women’s rights issues so I didn’t have to explain the procedures they were talking about. Spelling

Peyton had been working on exceptions to plural nouns, like dropping the Y and adding “IES” to the singular. Candy –> Candies. Bully –> Bullies. She had Turkey –> Turkies. It just didn’t look right to me. I questioned her, and she said she did it in class. Scary Costume

Brandon picked a clown outfit out with my mom, who bought it for him. This was just after the clown incidents on the news, so she told ME it wasn’t a good idea. I already knew it wasn’t a good idea, and I would not have selected it in the first place. Dave brought a chocolate crepe home the other day. Peyton and I had our piece of it, but Brandon was still eating his dinner. We all went upstairs and left him to eat the rest of it. In the morning, I saw the paper plate with the crepe on it. I asked him what happened and why he didn’t finish. He told me (no joke), “I saw a clown out in the backyard.” Uh, okay, dude. When I reminded him about the crepe today in the morning, he was excited to inhale it. This levitra from canada in turn invites erectile dysfunction predicament. Now, he was trying to scare Peyton by having her step on the activators for the things that jump out at you. But he ended up scaring himself! He jumped when there was a delayed reaction for one of the jumping spiders. We did return his costume for a Haz Mat suit/zombie thing. At least it’s something we could all agree upon. We can give him test tubes and colored water, and he can look like Walter White.
