Fielding drills

Third day in a row of practice yesterday.  Peyton was asked if she was tired as she looked a little sluggish on defense.  But then she was doing an agility drill where the ball was rolled to one side of her and she had to scoop it up laterally.  Then the ball was rolled to the other side, and she had to field it at the opposite side and throw it back to center.  There were two other stations and after they each did it once, they had to do it in front of the whole group.  As she was up to wait her turn, the manager told the team, “Wanna see some range here?”  Then she ran to get her ball after it was thrown and scooped it up, threw it back, and then headed to get the one rolled in the opposite direction. It felt like a recruiting trip for her! She did try to take soda, but I gave her the “no take” sign.  And, luckily she picked up on it but not before taking a sip.  Brandon and dave had gone to watch an all star game with Brandon’s former teammates. So he wasn’t around to partake but he did hear soda and got excited about it before telling him she didn’t drink the rest of it.

Playing for the other team

Today, Peyton was invited to practice with the younger team. They are trying to convince Peyton to play with them next year, but they are a small, young team. We tried to get there early, but it wasn’t early enough, there were other coaches and players there already 15 minutes before the start of practice. Peyton was a bit shy, and she didn’t want to get her stuff hung up. Finally, Cierra arrived, and she got her stuff out only because C was there. Soon, the team was rallied together for introductions. They quickly learned Peyton’s name, but it was going to take a little longer for the other way around. The manager sent the girls to practice, then he called Peyton to come back. Three coaches surrounded her and wanted to see her pitch. I saw her nodding, and she looked like she was responding. Dave had taken Brandon with him to hit baseballs on the other field. He didn’t want to get involved, even though I told him he should be there to see what they were teaching her. She went out there and threw more strikes than I’ve seen her. They told her to stand tall, and slow her arm down. He wanted to make sure she just focused on accuracy and less on killing it. He said if she had 0-2 on the count, she could fire it in there. That brought a smile to her face. She then faced an adult batter, and she was still able to throw strikes. They worked on fielding, and she was being told to field with two hands, which she sometimes gets over-confident and doesn’t. She was doing some that way, but not all the time. She did get most of what they hit to her. Then, they did some base-running drills. She was shown how to lead off, and then told to run to second. She was made an example of for the other girls to see how to run quickly. How does Kamagra work? They were keeping track of time, and she got 7.6 seconds. She beat the other teammates, but the 5 year old went, and the coach said she passed it in 5 seconds even. Then, it was a water break, and I had to remind Peyton that he was just kidding, and to not throw a fit. She said she knew he was kidding, and that she had won. I told her to keep up the hustle, and to do her best. She then started pitching to a coach, who was batting the ball to make plays. She even caught a pop up, but she didn’t call it as she should have. One coach came up to us and C’s mom told him that they may lose Peyton to 10u next year, even though she could still play 8U. He told us, “I’m not even going to tell Danny that, he may have (another) stroke!” Dave and I were able to watch together, until he was called upon to pitch to our girls. Then, he was asked to pitch to the whole team! I guess the manager is trying to get Dave on board with this team just as much as he is trying to get Peyton to be. Tomorrow, Peyton will have her normal practice, then return on Wednesday with this team again. Thursday will be practice, and then Friday, she will have the other team’s tourney. Busy softball week for her, but glad she was able to have fun, learn something new, and get along with the team.
At the team closing huddle, the manager asked the two new girls who their favorite princesses were. Cierra didn’t answer, but when he asked her who her favorite player was, she said, “Buster Posey” to a roar from the crowd. But when the manager asked Peyton both, she didn’t answer either question. He told her, “I get it, you’re quieter, and don’t like to say much. You like to talk with your bat and your glove. I get it.” Later, I did tell the manager who Peyton’s favorite player was. He got it, and said that he is a good one to admire, and then asked who was a Dodger fan. Then asked if we were CAL or Stanford, and we both said, “Neither.” Hannah’s dad was a bear, so he said, “I like the bruins, they are baby bears,” as the manager is a Stanford guy, having worked there, and growing up in PA.
The coaches did tell Peyton the same thing as Dave, but somehow she responded to them, and wasn’t intimidated as I would have been if three grown men were surrounding me all talking and telling me what to do at the same time. Glad she can take the heat!

Peyton Mommy Moment

There’s a game she plays, BopIt, which is coordination and following the calls, like Simon Says. Part of the game, when it shuts down, will say, “Quick as a cat, ‘meow’!” Peyton recently overtook Brandon’s high score, tapping out at 100 successful commands.

Early one morning, as she had come to our room, and was drifting in and out of sleep, Dave was trying to get her up with the prospect of breakfast. I told him she was not motivated by food like Brandon was. Brandon is more like a dog, while Peyton was more like a cat, doing things on her own terms. At that time, both of us said, “Meow.” I laughed out loud, and then asked her, “Who knows you better than me?” She said, “No one!” Love the weekends…we have one more week before a long weekend next week!

Sunday Funday

Since there was no tourney today, Dave took Brandon out this morning to work on his baseball skills to keep them sharp for later this summer when his practices start. Peyton did some piano and workbook work, while I cleaned up.

When the boys came home, Peyton was already changed for swimming. She figured if she was already there, then Dave wouldn’t say no. We ended up going down south to the indoor pool, so that they didn’t have to lube up in sunblock. Peyton was excited because she didn’t have to wear a rash guard. She was too excited to wear the halter top and small bikini bottoms. When she stripped down, Dave said, “I don’t authorize this!” Her problem is that her bottom and top are different sizes, and it was a set from my mom. So the bottom fits well, but her torso is too long, and she kept tugging at her top to pull it down. Even though they enjoyed the water slide last time, they both headed to the jungle gym structure. They played on that for awhile before they both decided to swim laps. They crammed into one lane and started to race each other, but they were running into each other in the lane. At this time, they blew the whistle for a five minute kid free time. I suppose it’s long enough for the kids to get out and use the restroom before coming back in. I had the kids come out of the lap lane, but the life guard said if they were swimming laps, they could stay. The best part about this place is that there are no crowds, ever! Well, the two times that we’ve been now. So, the kids raced one lap out and then back, each their own lane, before the life guard came back over to ask their ages. Brandon beat Peyton on this one. Their policy is that anyone 9 and under needs to take a swim test. The depth is only 3.5 feet, but they still required them to swim freestyle out and back. Peyton said she wanted to take it, but wanted to know if Brandon would do it with her. I asked if she wanted to rest first, and she said yes, then asked if she could switch lanes with Brandon for the test. Really…like it mattered. Luckily, Brandon was game, and didn’t put up a fight. They switched, put goggles on, and then did it again. This time, she was hanging in before the turn, and once she turned, he picked up more ground on her. She started getting tired half way back, and was doing her “rest” kicks, with her arm up, in rest position on her back. Finally, she came back to my side of the lap, and she earned her wrist band. The lifeguard asked her her name, and whether she was a member. Peyton was able to tell her the first part of the info and shrugged about the membership part. She is. So, she is now in the books if we go back. I left them and went to run while Dave was in there watching and playing his own games. I made it the entire time, 30 minutes, on the treadmill, which is unusual for me at this point. I think I was motivated by old basketball footage as well as the Hot Cocoa run that Brandon and I will do in January. I want to make sure he doesn’t “win” and that I can keep up a good pace with him. We’re only doing the 5K but still, I want it to be respectable. I came back and the kids got out. I helped shower Peyton up, and then we all headed to lunch in downtown MH. There is a BBQ restaurant there that is super yummy, and has a lot of beers on tap. We spent a lot of time there eating and watching the baseball game. We were also watching our friends’ 12 u softball game on the app. It was close, and went into extra innings, with them pulling it out for the one run go ahead. We then headed to the outlets and shopped at three places, one for me, and two for the kids’ clothes. We finally headed back home, and we were all tired. The kids got to hang out a bit, and Peyton practiced piano again, since she’ll be practicing with the other team tomorrow. They were sent to bed rather late, which has been the case for the past few days now.

Tourney weekend

From Thursday, uploaded piano:

The cat came to visit her!

at home:

Friday started the tournament again. I dropped the kids off at the parking lot, per their request, and they walked in together. I went to work and then came back to get them after their last class. I got to see the last part of their martial arts class. The instructor asked if they needed to go early, but I told him I was just there to observe.
Here is what I got to see:

Then Brandon volunteered and was selected:

Other kids struggled, trying more than once to break it. Glad they are beating up on the board and not each other.

I walked there, so we walked home, with a little grumbling. I’d lost the bag to Brandon’s glasses, so instead of walking home with the Grace and her sisters, we re-traced our steps.
We came home, ate lunch, and then chilled out until Dave came home. We all drove to the game early, and Peyton was instructed to take a nap. Here is what she looked like today:

It’s becoming a habit now since the games are at least 20 minutes in traffic to get there.

They played one team on Friday, then three games on Saturday.

Here is one of her hits from the tourney:

She struggled pitching on Friday night, hitting three batters, so she had to do some extra work on Friday night while Brandon was in basketball. Luckily, he was at a high school, so she got to be on the softball field there.

From the “real” high school distance.  She’s at 30 feet now. It helped on Saturday, as she went in to pitch again with the same team from Friday night:
She was able to get this:

She was given the bunt sign and here it was…

an RBI and safe at first!

The team couldn’t pull it out even in extra innings. But it meant a free afternoon, which everyone came home, showered up, and napped!

We stayed up later than usual as we had a free day Sunday.
today, the kids want to go for a swim at the water slides at the gym down south. We’ll go since no sunblock is required!

Siblings coming along

There may be hope for my kids to be civilized to one another. Yesterday, I picked Peyton up for piano and Brandon pleaded to stay. They were playing dodgeball together. She finally got the courage to ask the teachers to be allowed to play with the “big” kids as she said she wished she told them she was 9 so she could be in the big kid group versus the younger kids. They play slightly different games, and less thrilling for the younger kids. I kept Brandon there and returned for him after piano. When we walked back to the car, he threw her a balloon filled with rice that he’d made. He told her he made it for her so she wouldn’t whine about his.  I’ll take it.

This morning, he was looking through his baseball cards and noticed #22 was missing. He asked her immediately of its whereabouts.  She told him it was in her room and they scrambled upstairs to get it. He was upset, which I give him, since she stole it from him!

Finally after the dust had settled and they were eating breakfast again, she told him, “I’m sorry for stealing it from you.”  Totally unprompted. I didn’t make her or tell her to say it. He, of course, kept yelling at her and I told him, “I think what you’re trying to say is, ‘I accept your apology.'” Baby steps.

No practice yesterday as it was too hot. While watching the basketball draft, we found this:

She was bored to sleep.

Newest hardware

Peyton was told to put her trophy up on the shelf.  She said, “Oh I like this!”  Dave was telling her to hurry up and asked why it was taking her so long. Her response, “There are too many on my shelf!”  Really?

Today, they had a repeat of the game she lost last week.  She didn’t go first. She called, “I want to go third to last or fourth to last.”  The parents around me chuckled since they knew what happened last time.  She ended up with 31 hits to put her in the final four against Cierra, Kelsy and Annika, the winner from last week.  They weeded them down to Cierra and Peyton. Peyton started first after losing the Rock Paper Scissors. She got a streak without fouls or strikes of only three.  She walked to the cage and Brandon was consoling her. The other girl was cheering for Peyton! So sweet. Peyton doesn’t have that part in her. She’s all focused on her own performance.  Brandon was chatting with her while the other girl went.  When she fouled off three and her turn ended, Brandon walked away from Peyton and I think patted her on the back. She said, “I didn’t think I would win!” I told her not to think that way.

Before softball, Peyton maxed out on the BopIt, getting it up to 100 successful commands. Brandon is now hot on her heels to beat her!  She did it twice and I’ll have to get it on record.

Brandon asked me today, “When I get your phone, can I have a new case?  Yours is pink.” He’s already planning!

Tourney weekend

P and B wrapped up basketball camp on Friday by 4 pm, and then we picked them up after getting a boba together. (dave got home early to head out to the tourney).

I quickly asked my mom to bring Brandon to his basketball practice at 730 pm. Peyton’s game was at 640 pm, so it was going to overlap. Brandon was at the same gym as his basketball camp, so he was going to be there the majority of his day. Three of us drove down to the game. We got beaten by a team that resides just north of us. Peyton pitched a bit, and then hit an RBI single.

Hit #2 of the tourney:

She did not melt down even though she had a full day of camp and a long game, so I told her she could sleep with us. She was more than excited! We drove back to Brandon and my mom, who also had the girls. We waited for Brandon to finish up at 9 pm, and then we headed to eat dinner, my mom’s fave – Mexican food.

We had a late night, as the kids showered up after that, and fortunately, we had a later game on Saturday. In the morning, I practice piano with Peyton , and when she was done, Dave took Peyton to get fruit, while I worked with Brandon on math. We did more errands, and then Dave went to the end of the season party with Brandon. It was going to be near 100 degrees, and I was equipment manager for Peyton, carrying the wagon with all the gear. We arrived on time, and I had to cart the stuff back and forth across the field. No one felt sorry for Dave as he was at the pool. We were playing the tourney hosts, so we knew we were up for trouble.

Peyton’s first at bat, she was called to bunt. She read her sign appropriately and then this happened:

Dave wanted to know why she was bunting, when she can hit, but I’m glad she listened to her coach.
She did not pitch the first Saturday game, which is less stressful for me. She played at short stop the entire game. The team lost again, in a bad way.
Here’s her second at bat, reached on base by an error on the first baseman.

I drove home with the gear in between games to consolidate with Brandon and Dave. We turned around and went right back to the game after refilling water. When he got back to the field, the manager told Dave about the perfectly placed bunt that she laid down. My parents were coming to this game, but she was not pitching. At first.
She had this double:

She did come into the game and stopped the bleeding, but it was still not enough to pull out the win.

We said good night to my parents, then they headed home, while we headed to the Jaillon’s going away party. They’re leaving for VA later this summer, so they were hosting a taco party. They knew that we would be late, but we would not miss it!

Brandon walked in, saw his friend, and they headed out to shoot hoops in the front of the house. He didn’t even eat! Peyton was close to me just to say hi, and then presented V with a gift, a photo album that we started, and two board books which she signed.

We chatted and hung out with the parents and other friends we knew from school before leaving when the kids had gotten all wet. Like a soppy mess. It was warned that there would be water play, but we had not planned for them to engage.

We had a 940 am game today, so we headed out early with a stop for coffee and breakfast.
Here’s their warmup cheer, with P right in the middle! She’s found her voice among her peers.

We were not expected to win the first game, but we gave them a run for their money. K started pitching, but soon after the first inning, Peyton came in, and pitched over three innings. We were the visiting team, and once we had the lead, we had to hold them. We held them at 8-5 to advance to the semi finals. We seem to always win the first game on Sunday because we show up to play!

The second game was against the team we lost to on Friday. It was definitely a beatable team, but Friday had been a long day for most of the girls, and the other team got the best of us. We had gone to lunch in between games, and we saw the other team at the same place. I took Peyton to the restroom after we ordered and saw a coach huddled around the bathroom with 6 girls. I asked if he was talking strategy or if they were in line. He sheepishly responded, “Strategy” and moved to the side while Peyton and I headed in. Before I had turned the corner, I caught a bit of him telling the girls that they need to “catch those girls offguard.” I think he was referring to base stealing, so Dave told our manager what I’d heard. It’s like having a spy secret mission.

Peyton ground out her first at-bat, but then hit:

She got another RBI.

One thing we were seeing was that a lot of other girls pound their bats into the plate. Most of the girls who do not hit well do this, for possibly intimidation factor. Dave can’t stand it, as it is not good for the plate. He told Peyton not to do it, as she sometimes was show-boating and flipping her bat around. Well, she sure listened

She was told to just tap the plate lightly to make sure she could cover the outside of the base with her bat.

That same at bat:

We capped off this game, again, holding them as visitor, with great plays! One girl, who has struggled at the plate all season long, hit a legitimate triple, down the line, and as she was coming around third, the coach sent her for a homerun. Her dad, the HS principal, who was keeping score, was BEAMING with pride!

I, too, felt so proud of her since she’s struggled and really gets down on herself. She is the one who, when Peyton hit a homerun, went up to Dave, tapped him on the shoulder, and said, “You must be very proud of Peyton for hitting that ball.” She’s really the sweetest kid out there.

Now, the game ended, and the kids had about 30 minutes to regroup before the finals. Only, the Yins were coming back in town, and we told them yesterday we’d be available to get them. Well, they were coming in at 4 pm, and it was just before 3 pm. I grabbed Brandon and the gear, and we headed home. Dave was going to find a ride for he and Peyton. I came home, grabbed their keys, and headed to their house. I parked our car there, and drove the minivan out to the airport. Brandon was happy to be in the AC and away from the field. He was a trooper, taking care of the little boys at the restaurant, eating with them, and helping them in the restroom with handwashing and managing the line. I was watching him from far away, as he tried to keep the boys (5 of them) quiet and going one at a time.

We got to the airport a bit early, as Brandon was giving me a play by play since he was looking at my game app. Luckily, he’s the kid that doesn’t get sick. He was also navigating me to the airport. We parked in the cell phone lot so that I could watch with him, but I was worried about killing the battery on the car, so we sweated it out in the sun without AC. We didn’t have to wait too long, and soon they were ready. We drove back over to get them, and I asked if they could drop us off at the field. They were shocked that I left a championship game to come get them. I told them we were not expected to win any games today, so we were planning to just come home and get their car at some point. They high-tailed it to the field, and when we arrived, they all decided to come in and check things out. I was embarrassed to have them come in to see the end of the game. But by now, since we were down 0-6, and it was now over 100 degrees on the field, the coach called the game in defeat. We arrived to the school and caught the tail end of the award ceremony. They congratulated P and saw some friends they had on other teams. C saw them and her mom headed her over to badger Ryan about basketball coaching. Ryan was very reserved about how he answered, since he didn’t want to definitely commit to anything.

Dave and P then had their ride home, though she wanted to go with us, but Dave convinced her to go with him, while we took a bucket off of Dave’s hands so he wouldn’t have to bring so much back by himself. He did still have Peyton’s bag. Brandon wanted to go with me (which never happens), but of course, we were with the girls. We rode back, and then went to get our car, while Dave and Peyton beat us home. We all showered up, peyton practiced piano (she can’t break her streak!) and then went out for food. (I joked she would be the only teammate that had to go home and practice piano, though one girl missed all of yesterday’s games because of Japanese school. Peyton said if she misses, she has homework.  I asked Peyton which she would do.  She told me, “I’d take the homework.”  We also stopped to get some more fruit and groceries before calling it a night. We have five more days before we do it all over again 🙂

Basketball camp

The kids are in basketball camp this week with one of the assistant coaches being a former softball coach of Peyton’s.  He’s the current HS coach and teacher at the other middle school. He’s at opposite schools of where the kids would go but he’s a fixture since he had one of Peyton’s friend’s dad when he was younger.

The kids have friends there as well as other friends’ kids we know like C and L Chao.

The first day, I got a picture of the kids from another mom, all different grades but from both our Japanese league and softball:

I went early on Tuesday to watch and both kids were wearing their mouth guards.  Lucky them that they were “caught” following directions.

They run mini drills to earn otter pops and they are recognized for good sportsmanship and hustle.  The kids are divided up amongst their age groups with about 10-12 in each group. They encourage friends to move in and out of groups to play together, but Peyton was happy in her group. The older kids play in one gym while Peyton’s age and below are in another. One of Peyton’s girl friends was playing against Brandon at one point, and they were guarding each other. Brandon played her soft and didn’t really guard her while PH went up against him in his face.

She jumped too quickly ahead and didn’t observe what the goal was. She was very upset and threw a fit in front of all her coaches.  She had to write: and will be apologizing to the coach today. She claimed her arm hurt and she couldn’t shag balls. I hinted that the only thing hurt was her pride. Dave and I told her in competitions like that sometimes it’s best to go toward the end so you can see what you need to beat. I never go first in those things. I like to survey the competition. Even her coach said it to her.)

A few times yesterday, she’d stop and say, “I can’t believe I beat my whole team.” So she showed me what she did; running up, sliding right, back peddling, the shuffling left and then running up again.  She did it in the fastest time of her group. She did say she split the third pop with Brandon.
