Kid Free Shopping Day

Yesterday, in the morning, Dave took Brandon to get the car fixed (there was a nail in the tire), while I hung out with Peyton here. She practiced piano and read a book. Then, Jenni came over right after I’d eaten lunch, and we headed up to Carolyn’s to meet Chrissi. The four of us chatted for awhile, then we headed into the city to brave the holiday rush. We had a tea time at 430 pm at the Rotunda, but we wanted to shop a bit beforehand. Traffic prevented us from doing much of that, but we did get to look around and buy a bit before. We had a wonderful tea service, overlooking the square, with ice skating, and looking into the bridal dress fitting gallery down below. It was the same designer as my dress, but that gallery was new from back in the day. We shopped some more after tea, and we didn’t leave the city until a little after 9 pm. While watching the news, I saw the damage from the previous days protests, and I put the damage together with what I saw. Luckily, we didn’t go up there on Black Friday! It was so nice to hang out with these girls, who I’ve known since college days and get to spend some Mommy time with them. I think we should make it an annual event. Thanks to all the dads who watched the kids while we frolicked in the city 🙂

Turkey Trot

Peyton woke up just after 6:30 to go potty.  We were already up getting ready. Dave and Peyton were going to drop us off for the race.  We made it downtown just as the 10k runners were rushing to the corrals.  It was chaotic but luckily parking was free and available all throughout the area. We found an open restaurant for breakfast and Dave got himself and Peyton breakfast just as we headed out. imageWe lined up, and later I heard we were in the 8-9 minute per mile pace. I reminded Brandon about race etiquette and he was armed with my business card with our phone numbers written down. He knows our numbers but in case he was under duress he may not remember. While we waited our turn for the start, I recognized a girl and then her mother.  Elise and  Shenghi. I wasn’t sure so I texted Michelle with a stalker photo to verify.  But before getting a response, while we moved through to the start line I decided to throw caution to the wind and called her name.  She acknowledge and I think she recognized me. I’d thrown out Michelle’s name to give her some context. We waved goodbye and got our race under way.  Brandon and I started out holding hands, something he still enjoys but definitely because he was scared. Though we were in a fast pace, there were many others like us in the wrong corral, walking.  We had to dodge quite a bit, and by half a mile the complaints started. I tried to cheer him up saying we had to hurry since a stroller had just past us. He then complained, “I want to be in a stroller!”so that pep talk backfired.  After a mile, I congratulated him and told him only two to go.  I didn’t want to give him math at that time of despair.  At 1.55 miles in, I told him, “You’re half way there!”  He said, “Okay. But what’s half?”  I’m not sure what he meant – if he didn’t know what the word half was or if he didn’t know his math.  Either way, not a time for me to go over math with him. I’d never run with anyone for so long before.  Usually I start together with someone and run different paces or try to stay together but get off pace somehow. But I’ve never had to deliberately keep up with someone. It helped we were holding hands. And then later that he wasn’t hungry.  I knew that was a bad sign and he was not in a good mood. By the second mile marker, I told him a mile left. He seemed in good spirits to know that but was fading by half a mile left.  Tears started. He wiped them away with his free hand but he wasn’t happy. He kept asking to walk but I told him it’d take longer. He trudged on and then we saw the third mile marker.  There was a sign for 5k/10k split. I joked how we should go to the 10k. He wasn’t laughing and ran toward the 5k split of things.  He wanted to stop but I told him he could at the finish only 0.1 miles to go. I kept my promise and let him walk after we crossed the finish line. He gained his composure after I told him he needed to help me find Daddy. After we walked a bit, his smile returned and he said, “Yeah! That was fun!”  It’s like giving birth! You forget the pain.  Almost.  I was texting Dave to not confuse tears of joy with tears of pain.  We found Dave and Peyton who were waiting in the family area with the leftover pancakes which hit the spot. We played some kids games and then Dave wanted to head out to avoid the crowd. There were still people running even after we were done with the kids area.  I congratulated Brandon again telling him he was done and there were still others on the course!  I think he was happy with his medal and did allow a selfie post race.  imageHere are the pics.  Thanks to Dave and Peyton coming out. She had her cowbell but got scared to use it. She even told me, “I’m not going to show the Giants race part.  Since it’s not the Giants race. Silly Peyton!

We received some magnets from our DVC holiday card. I ripped them off and told Peyton to put them up on our wall (the new magnet one that Dave painted). Daisy

Tonight, Peyton and I attended a girl scout meeting to check it out.  I know that they had a full troop of 10, so we were invited to “observe”.  We arrived just as others were.  I introduced myself to the homeowner/troop leader. I’d already prepped Peyton, and told her that I wasn’t leaving.  She didn’t have to be clingy with me, like she was at the cooking place.  She gathered on the floor as requested with the other girls.  She did introduce herself while going around the circle.  She followed the girls in her group when broken into 3.  Her first station was leaf rubbing.  The troop leader was asking her a question, and she didn’t respond.  She told her that all she requested was either a head nod or shake, but she had to respond.  She did nod her head.  Later, she moved to the Chinese jump rope station.  She watched and held the rope as directed, and was excited to participate and jump as demonstrated.  I was proud of her for getting out there and doing something she probably wasn’t familiar.  Finally, the other two groups had mixed and prepared cupcakes, and Peyton’s role was to frost and serve her new friends, with the other 3 girls in her group.  She was the last to eat one, but she did enjoy it.  I secretly think she frosted her fingers just so she could lick them. One girl did try to tell her off, telling her to count for her while she jumped.  Funny, though, because the girl wasn’t jumping. She told Peyton, “You count by 2’s – 2, 4, 6, 8, see?”  Peyton just stood there and stared at her. The other mom saw it and said, “I think she’s waiting for you to jump first.”  As soon as she started jumping, Peyton started counting, “2, 4, 6, 8,” and so on.  I was telling Dave the story, and he asked me if I was sure I wanted to get her in there.  I told him it would build her character, as she’d have to learn how to navigate all kinds of personalities.  Peyton was super excited on the way home.  She even told Brandon what she’d done. I told her I was excited this was the first activity that she has ever done without Brandon first doing it or doing it at the same time.  She ate a little bit, then went up to shower and go to bed.  We’re going to still work on the head nod versus yes, please.  She told me that I wasn’t the troop leader, so she could listen to the leader, and just nod.  We’ll see about that..I’m hoping she will warm up and get used to the leaders…

Thanksgiving Performance

Peyton asked me if I’d be able to attend her Thanksgiving performance for her class. She asked me on Thursday, with an email from her teacher the same day. Such late notice! I asked for time off (one hour) at the end of my day to attend. Peyton asked Dave with big puppy dog eyes, but he declined her. I attended today, and it was a quick song. Almost not worth it, but it was a cute, little song. Parents all brought food in, so the kids got to snack. Peyton selected two small cookies, then some fruit, popcorn and pretzels. We chatted with V, while she ate her food. We couldn’t leave since we had to wait for Brandon, so we just hung around the classroom. The structure was off limits until the bell rang, so the kids were getting anxious to go outside. Other classrooms weren’t out yet, and some didn’t have parties going on either. V mentioned and asked Peyton why all the “bad” kids were at Lunch Bunch. Peyton told her it was fun, and she had a toy from it today. After school, we headed to pick Brandon up, and headed home for piano and homework/reading. Thanksgiving “song”

When I pointed out on the last picture that the text says she’s wearing a pink dress, but she colored it purple, she said, “Oops!”  She did have another art piece with a leaf wreath; each leaf has something she is thankful for, and she has Brandon’s name on it.  I asked her about her other passage, where she said she wasn’t thankful for her brother.  She responded, “Oh, I was just kidding.”

News Break

This evening, the kids were looking forward to their usual game of Jeopardy.  All the homework, piano, and bathing was done in preparation. They were both here when I turned it on, already two minutes in, since they had to brush teeth.  Peyton got one answer right “Von Trapp family” after yesterday’s performance!   Then, half way through, there was a news break.  Our president came on to denounce the activity in MO tonight.  Peyton and Brandon were both disappointed, with Peyton saying, “Hurry up 44th president!  We want to watch Jeopardy.”  Brandon asked me, “Are they playing Jeopardy without us now?”  I told him, sadly, they were.  They weren’t going to wait for us, and we couldn’t change the channel as they suggested.  Finally, after about 5 minutes away, they changed it back to the regular programming. Double Fluency

While we were wrapping up the parent teacher conference last week with Peyton’s teacher, we were talking about English learners. I told her how Brandon told his kinder teacher he spoke Chinese at home because he knew “bao” and other food-related Chinese words. I told him how that was a wrong statement, and he would be classified differently if he said that. He’d be labelled ELD, and that sets him up with other services. The teacher then asked me, “But Peyton’s fluent?” I asked her, “Fluent in what?” She said, “Chinese.” She was serious. Not even a little bit.  I’m sure both kids are trying to keep up, since they are in the minority in that they only know one language.  Poor things!
