Halloween 2018

We didn’t have pumpkins to carve, and barely had candy to put out. Peyton was excited to make the sign to put out. Dave bought one bag of 55 pieces. Normally, we put to take 2 per person. But she was doing the math, and knew it wouldn’t be many people served. She struggled, but figured out that only 27 kids would get candy if they all followed directions. So, she was contributing candy that she’d gotten at practice last week. Later, Dave brought home more, but she’d already put her sign up on the basket. She thought we would see P and A, our neighbors and friends out trick or treating, as we went with them last year. So she looked through our stash to bring them something. But she said, “A is allergic to peanuts, so I can’t give her the M&M’s or anything from our bucket.” She fished out some stickers and a pencil that she’d received from her coach last weekend at practice. She was going to give the pencil to P and the stickers to A. She put them in her pumpkin, and Dave grabbed his drink, and we headed out. Dave didn’t have a game to watch, so he reluctantly walked around with us. B couldn’t find his costume from last year, so he headed out with just his sweatshirt. He didn’t want to trick or treat, but he wanted to walk around with us “to get exercise”. He half wanted to stay home and pass out candy, but also probably didn’t want to be left alone at night. We met up with N and the girls to give them their presents, and then stopped at a house where some school friends were. We were invited to eat, and gather, while a large group of kids were starting at 7 pm. P found a friend, but she just wanted to go by herself in a small group with the au pair. She started to walk away, when I asked her if P could join her, because the only reason P was inside the house was to stay with A. She grabbed Peyton and both were happy to be in a smaller group. It was easier to maneuver, and not lose anyone. They actually got through the houses more quickly. So, it was Dave, Brandon, the au pair, Evalina, and the girls. They stopped by the fire station, where we took pictures because Evalina’s dad is a fireman. Then, we turned around and made our way to a maze, the corner house with inflatables, and the quieter back street behind our house. Dave and Brandon cut out when Dave’s door dash showed up at the house. They had been watching trick or treaters go past the doorbell on camera. Dave wanted to shout through the intercom to tell them they were being watched. The girls were both scared by the maze, which was set up in a neighbor’s front house. There was black tarp, and little kids jumping out from behind. We ended up seeing Nela and the girls once again and they were with the Yin family! P’s friend is the little sister of one of G’s friends. SO they had a mob walking around together. We had already been to the Yins’ and the girls waved to them and said hi on the camera. In the back street, we found some bowls which were empty. The girls started emptying their baskets into those empty bowls, filling it up the neighbors’ buckets. They would stop in front of the homes and stay there awhile. I was nervous because I didn’t want the neighbors thinking they were STEALING candy! Peyton told me, “Well, you’re not going to let me eat it anyway, so I might as well help someone else!” They were really sweet. They wanted to give out candy as they were walking by younger kids. As we were wrapping up, we headed back home and split off from A and her au pair at our intersecting streets. We came back into the nice bright light, and each kid was able to select 10 pieces of candy to eat. So, basically, Brandon made her do all the work, and reaped the benefit of her labor. She wasn’t even sad about it, either. She totally let him have whatever he wanted AFTER she chose her 10 pieces. They are definitely growing up!

Back to back weekends

We were in Salinas last week and drove back and forth while this week we were in Modesto.

Peyton had basketball practice on Friday night. I had set the alarm for 6:15 but Peyton, not wanting to oversleep, came into the room at 530! She fell back asleep until my alarm went off. We packed up the car and headed then she and I headed out to Modesto before 7 am on Saturday. It was dark, and there was construction on the road from overnight that wasn’t factored in when I checked our drive time the night before. She fell asleep and I high-tailed it out of the Bay Area and headed east. We arrived 10 minutes before warm ups began, but that was still 15 minutes after I’d wanted to arrive. My mom let us there from Auburn and we met in the parking lot. We were behind the coaches for awhile so I knew we weren’t too late. The first game was at 930 am, then 220 and 350 pm. Their first game was the hardest to get going. Somehow they were not putting together their best, making errors here and there. It didn’t help that coach was Hangry!

They managed to win by one run though it should have been by more than that. They had a long break to eat lunch. There is a family with an RV and we hung out in its shade.

Rough life. There is a tv inside and outside.

The girls hung out before they had to go back on the field.

The adults hung out outside until we had to go back in, too. We set up for the warmest part of the day. Meanwhile Brandon and Dave were back at home with Brandon’s two baseball games.

Peyton’s team went 3-0 for the first day and ended up with the number one seed going into Sunday. That meant the first game would be at 145! We would get to sleep in!

We had two queen beds. We checked into the hotel and then promptly met the team at the pool. I watched the girls before another mom and coach showed up. My mom stayed in the room to watch the NLCS final game. We hung out until pizza was delivered. It was almost 9 by the time we headed out of the pool area. We even saw some of the last team we’d just beaten but they were nice to offer pizza to us. I didn’t want to accept given that we would have had to feed at least seven girls.

Peyton showered up and went to bed. She bounced between my Mom’s bed and settled finally in mine. I set my alarm for 9 to get to breakfast in time. But Peyton woke up by 830 am. We went to get breakfast, Peyton read her book that I brought while I hung out with the moms and girls in the RV. Turns out they parked in the parking right by my car. I’d packed up our stuff ahead of out checkout time and let Peyton read quietly.

Warm ups started at 1245 pm but Dave and Brandon, who had been up since 6 am, and played one game, showed up just after noon. We watched one of Peyton’s old teammates play her game that started before ours.

Then we were up to play. It was a game we were supposed to win, as we were the one seed but you can never know what happens in these games. They’re all still learning. We were playing the team from the pool that we’d beaten the day before. And it started out a bit slow, but slowly we pulled away to win 7-3. Then our next game was against the only team that has beaten us this fall season.

They were also the last team that beat us in Tahoe. They brought out their fast pitcher but the girls were seeing it better. Peyton struck out her first time seeing her, the first out in 6 batters, but we scored two after the first inning. Then the next time she saw her, she went down 0-2. But fought back to draw a walk. I think she fouled off three pitches and then waited on the four balls. Overall, we were able to stay on top as the home team as time expired. I’m sure we will face them again. And they will bring it. The team ended undefeated in this tourney with five wins in two days. Peyton played short stop for every inning on defense. She made some great plays. After Saturday, Coach told me, “Peyton made every play hit to her. Except one.” I knew exactly which play he was talking about too. Tough guy to please. The other coach told her directly how proud of her he was while we were at the pool. Sunday she made a backhanded play and stopped the ball from going to the outfield. It would have been a stellar play, but it ended up hitting her in the leg first, so she just stopped it and didn’t fire to first base. Later, she told me it hurt “just a little”. I didn’t even know she was hit! She had another back handed play that took her off line a bit so she missed getting the ball there in time. I had a hard time capturing the footage on defense. I have to record every play in the hopes of getting her on defense. But here’s her offense:

The team calls her “Junior” PeyDay. Junior for a swing like Ken Griffey Junior. She likes it now.

Growth!

I know the kids are growing because other people tell us so. We really don’t “see” it, but I am filling in a roster for Peyton, and last year at this time, she was 51 inches. Now, she’s at least 54 as of March, so I’m projecting she is at least 55 inches now. From March 2017 to March 2018, she grew from 4′ 4.25″ to 4’6.13″! Brandon told us his teammates are all taller than their parents, and he was one of the few who had not yet surpassed a parent. Dave told him good luck catching him, but pointed to my direction. Freaky Friday

While driving back from practice today, Peyton and I were talking about freckles and adding them to her costume this year.

She’ll wear this again at school for their Halloween festival. I was going to do her hair in two braids and give her freckles. She declined freckles. But said if she had a mole, she’d look like me. Then that morphed into what if she dressed like me and was my mini me. I suggested next year she could wear my clothes, get a volunteer sticker and an ABC reader book. She started to mimic me, “My name is Robyn, and I’ll be your ANC reader this year.” By next year, she’ll probably fit my clothes. Then she said, “You can be me! You fit my Sting sweatshirt.” We had a good time thinking how to execute the costumes next year!

Flu shot 2018

Peyton and I went to MTN KP last Friday after school. There was one person in line before us. I asked her if she wanted me to go first or her. She volun-told me to go first. I went first, and it went into my right arm. No biggie. She went next. She offered her left arm, even though she told me that it would affect her catching a ball, since that was her catching arm. Now, she was getting a weekend off from softball, so it was the perfect time. Let’s not count the 5 hours of basketball practice she had between Friday night and Sunday evening. She was about to laugh when the nurse brought the needle to her arm, causing her to pull it back. She let Peyton settle down, and then approached her again. She was successful, and Peyton did great!

We went to pick Brandon up, as he told me that there was no basketball practice. And this was when the madness began. He normally doesn’t like talking to her. But when we were heading down the freeway, he suddenly asked where we were going. Peyton told him, and then he asked me to confirm. His voice was a bit shaky. He asked Peyton if it hurt. She said, “You got one last year, you don’t remember?” He insisted she tell him if it hurt. She said it was like a little pinch. Then, she proceeded to tell him, “There was a long needle.” Keep in mind, she was watching MY needle and NOT her own, which I believe was shorter. He started to get very nervous. “What do you mean a long needle?” Peyton continued, “It goes ALL. THE. WAY. IN.” Brandon was nervously laughing, “What?” Peyton, “Yup, and they hold it in for like 2 minutes until all the juice goes in.” Brandon, “TWO MINUTES!?”

Peyton and I waited in the short all comers line, whereas there was a line downstairs now that we were there almost at closing time. We went up to pediatrics, but it was more formal there. We registered and were given a sheet of paper to complete. We waited in the waiting area and watched as scheduled patients came and left. Every time the door was opened, Brandon expectantly looked up, like he was awaiting his calling to be a tribute in Hunger Games! Each time it wasn’t him, he’d take another deep breath. Meanwhile PEyton was watching Mickey Mouse clubhouse cartoons on the tv in the waiting room. Finally, after an agonizing 10-15 minutes, Brandon was called back. The nurse took us back to a small room. She asked each of us to sit in a chair. Brandon sat closest to her, and there was a small giraffe push toy next to him. It was a toddler toy. She asked him to verify his birthdate and name. He did so, then started to try to psych himself up to receive the shot. The nurse noticed him bristling and teased, “Are you a baby? You’re a big baby, huh?” in her thick Filipina accent. She reassured him while he was taking deep breaths and looking away. He looked far away and jumped when she applied the cold alcohol swab. It was another agonizing moment before the needle went in. She was swift and deliberate before announcing, “All done!” I tried to ask him if he needed a sticker, but he bolted out of the room. We went along our way, and both kids had practice that night. We were all a bit sore, but I used it to my advantage, as neither messed with me this weekend, as I knew what arms each of them had been injected and neither wanted me to touch their arms. Peyton did get a little banged up at practice, even though she told her teammates her arm was a bit sore. She told me she was walking around like she’d broken her arm. She’s never broken her arm, so I’m not sure how she would know that, but she kept her arm straight just after having it poked. Happy to report we’re all back to normal now!

Long day

After two hours of basketball practice and watching former teammates play an inning at softball, we arrived to Brandon’s warmups for a double header. We were an hour plus early for the game. So I had Peyton nap. She jumped up to the front seat and buckled in. Until this:

She fell asleep at the wheel.
