Great Dad

I double-booked myself today for my monthly reading in Brandon’s class in addition to chaperoning for Peyton’s field trip. I couldn’t be in two places at once, so I enlisted Dave’s help for Peyton, since he can’t really do Brandon’s class, since he doesn’t know them or didn’t go to the training. He begrudgingly pitched in, and today is an outdoor field trip, so it was going to be a soggy mess. He took off with Peyton in her rain boots, with an umbrella and her rain jacket in hand. I got a text from him that he had N and K as well. Fortunately, they are all friends. Unfortunately, they can get on each other’s nerves. N is very chatty, and Dave may not be ready for it! Well, he does have to deal with me, but 5 year old me is a different story. After the field trip, he’ll have to take Peyton to piano, where I’ll meet up with them. Then, we have to transport Brandon from CDC to his chess tournament. He asked if we could go out to dinner like we did after his last chess tournament. I asked him if he wanted to go to S. Tomatoes, but he said, “No, I don’t want ice cream.” I thought it was bit odd he’d say that, then I asked him what he did want. He said, “I want fries.” Oh man. Then I lectured him about saturated fat and the effects on his coronary arteries 🙂 I’m sure that’s what he wanted to hear at 7:30 am.

Brandon Funnies

Dave asked for pills instead of syrup for Brandon’s ear infection. But they are huge pills, and we’re having to split them for him to take half at a time, twice a day. He has a little bit of a hard time getting them down. They are the size of a calcium tablet, and I have a hard time swallowing those. When we break the tablet, the exposed edge is chalky. Yesterday, I gave it to him, and Peyton was watching him across the table. She said, “Wow, that was hard.” I had to ask, “Hard for him? or Hard to watch?” Because I didn’t watch, but it looked painful both ways. After he was done with it, he said, “Can’t I just take it at CDC?” I asked him what he meant. He said, “You know, take it four times a day, instead of twice? So I don’t have to take so much all at once.” I was a bit surprised he was able to figure that out by himself. For his ancestor project, Brandon has to research the type of money from his ancestor’s country. I asked him to do this. He said he didn’t know how. I told him that was part of the learning. He said, “Well, anyway, I’m just going to ‘Google’ it.” Then after awhile, staring at the laptop, he asked, “How do I google it?” I told him that was what he was supposed to learn. He said, “Well, I’m just going to go to google.com.” Yes, he figured it out on his own. I did help him select the images that we’d print out for him, but at least he knew how to get to that point.

Handy Man

Dave’s car needed new brakes. So, he decided to do it himself. Maybe he’s watching too much DIY tv, but he ordered all the parts, parked his car inside the garage with the other two outside, and he was working when I went to the gym. I was a little concerned, since I was gone, and the kids were asleep. I had some visions of him being stuck under the car, but I had to trust he was going to be okay. I ran and then came back to see part of the garage cracked open. He’d wanted me to stop by and get him fro-yo, but I didn’t want to ruin my workout with that, so I just came home empty handed. The new gym is right across the street from froyo, so it’s tempting each time I leave! I sat with him for awhile, checking my phone, and supervising. Finally, I went inside, though he was talking to me like I was still there. Oops. He had the garage cracked so that he had some ventilation from the brake fluid. I was hoping the tires wouldn’t just pop off (like Legos), but he came back and said all was good. This morning, it was just starting to rain. I took out some trash, as it was trash day, and saw that the driver’s door to the car was open! I asked him if it was intentional, and he said no. I was afraid the car had been broken into, so he went to go inspect things. I didn’t want to touch anything in case it was a crime scene. He told me that the brake fluid really got to him! Who doesn’t close the door when leaving your car, especially the driver’s door!? His next mission is to change the other car’s brakes now. He says he used better parts for less, and he was assured that they were new bolts, etc, versus “trusting” that the mechanics were not re-using old parts. I was a little concerned when they were a little late coming home, again, thinking that maybe his tires were strewn about the freeway, especially in the rain, but they returned safely. Maybe he can do it! My car is a little tougher, since they are specialized brakes, so we’ll probably still have to take those in.

Books

This week, Peyton’s class is talking about Dr Seuss. One task for the one of the days is to share your favorite Dr Seuss book. She thought about it, and said, “But I cannot choose ‘Go Dog Go’.” Technically, it’s not written by him, but it was edited by him and has this caption: “Originally created by Dr. Seuss, Beginner Books encourage children to read all by themselves, with simple words and illustrations that give clues to their meaning” per Amazon. Diagnosis

Brandon’s been “sick” for the past 3 weeks. Sick for him is a runny nose, and he had a post-nasal drip/cough for a little bit, but he seemed to be doing well. He went into the pool several times, and he didn’t complain. Until last night. He told me his ear hurt. I took a look at it just with a flashlight and naked eye, and it looked ok. I thought maybe he got water in his ear swimming, so I told him to put his ear down to the pillow to let the water drain. I didn’t hear anything further until right before practice. He complained again right as they were leaving for practice. Dave said he’d take him to urgent care after practice. I fed Peyton quickly, giving her a fave of salmon and beets. She is a huge fan of beets! We took off to the gym for a class I was trying to make at 7 pm. I dropped her off at the kids’ club, and she was excited. The teacher there remembered her from last week. I was a little worried about her since she was in the big kid room without Brandon, but even before I’d turned around, the teacher asked her how she was doing. I heard Peyton say, “Fine, my brother is at basketball today.” She answered!! Immediately!! Unheard of! I felt comfortable after that, then I headed upstairs to the cycle area first. I waited about 10 minutes before our class started. It’s called “Surfset”, and Dave remembers seeing it on Shark Tank. It’s like a surf session on land. It’s basically a surf board mounted on 3 slightly deflated exercise balls. I was a little worried, but it’s a beginner’s class, so I figured to give it a go. I was super wobbly at first, but I got a little better. It was fun though, and 30 minutes went by quickly. I hung around to talk to the instructor a little bit, then instead of showering right away, I went back to get Peyton before the kids’ club closed at 8pm. When I got there, they were rainbow-looming, and Peyton was sorting colors of rubber bands. She didn’t want to leave, even after I tried coaxing her out of there. I told her she could come back next time, nothing worked. Finally, the end of my workout came, when I hoisted her up over my shoulder to carry her out, crying the whole way out. I carried her out of the building, through the parking lot, and before both of us fell down, I set her down in the middle of the parking lot. She continued to cry in the car. Later, she told me the big kid whipped her in the eye with a rainbow loom and “didn’t even say sorry!” She got pushed around by another one, and I told her she was free to go to the baby room. She declined that, and I told her she had to stand up for herself in the big kid room. She said a kid took a ball away from her. She told him to give it back but he didn’t. She was smiling when I got her, so I don’t know that she was so miserable. I was only gone for less than an hour, so I don’t know how bad it could have been for her. We came home, and the boys hadn’t gotten back by then. It was almost 8 pm. I jumped in the shower with her, and she got happy again. I got her washed up, then finished up myself, and met her for a story in bed. The boys had gotten home by then, and Dave told me “ear infection” and he was going out to get the antibiotics. Poor guy! He hasn’t had one in 8 years, and bam! Right as he turns 8, he gets one. Hopefully this will clear him up all the way through, but he’s getting amoxicillin, which he had a slight rash in the past. It’s for 10 days, but luckily, it’s twice daily. Dave asked for tablets, since Brandon can tolerate them, but they are “horse pills” per Dave! They are pretty big, at 875 mg, but after breaking them in half, Brandon was able to get them down. He went to bed later, around 9 pm, and while he was in his bed, he told us, “My ear feels different now, like a little better.” I told him maybe it’s because the medicine is kicking in already! Placebo effect going on right now.

Steps

We turned our steps in for today, from the past 5 weeks. My goal was 7500 per day. It turns out, my average was just over 9,000. My best days were definitely the weekdays! Maybe when they’re older, and can get around more. It’s definitely been good timing with this challenge, training for the April race, and the new club membership. Hopefully the myfitnesspal app will also continue to motivate me!

Another Museum Day

This morning, we went to basketball, and there were only 6 kids that showed up. Brandon got to start the game, and he was quickly tired. The other team had 3 guys that were Brandon’s height, and the two quick guys on our team were not there today. Good news is Brandon got a lot of playing time. I don’t think he would have seen it that way. But the team just couldn’t hang with the big guys without their two best players. Brandon made a few rebounds, but was outmatched by the other kids, who were subbed out against him. Toward the end of the game, his arms were no longer up, and the pep in his step was just gone. Today was our turn to bring snacks, and Dave struggled with what to bring. Since it was an early game, I threw out donuts. The other parents usually bring Doritos, fruit snacks and juice, no matter what the time of the game. Dave didn’t want to bring junk given “what it is you do” (meaning my job). I was just keeping in line with what the other kids were bringing, and I didn’t think the parents would mind donuts, since we had the early game. Dave ended up getting cheese sticks, honest kids juice, granola bars, and Cuties. He didn’t take into account one kid had a dairy and nut allergy, and he didn’t want an orange. Oops. Apparently, we’ve never noticed what he’s eaten before, but he looked a bit disappointed. Since it was a small team, we did bring home more snacks than most weekends. At least it’s stuff we’ll mostly eat now. Good call, Dave! I wouldn’t have wanted an extra 2 dozen donuts lying around, that’s for sure. After the game, we came home to change and then headed up to the City to use our coupon for the Creativity Museum. Dave told us at the start he’d give us only a quarter if we saw someone we know. Normally, it’s a dollar, but he was deflating it given the odds of now four of us being able to see someone we know. We got up around noon, and all three passengers were passed out. I woke up when Dave tapped me to turn around and look at the kids. Brandon was hooked around himself, curled up in a ball, with his eyes partially open. Peyton had her mouth wide open, leaned back the way Brandon sometimes sleeps in the car. When I took a picture of Peyton, Brandon had already gotten up (I should’ve done the reverse!) We walked to lunch first, then we headed to the museum. It was Girls Engineering Day, so we participated in a hovercraft-making session, similar to what we’d done at the Tech last weekend. Both kids tried their best, and put their creations in the wind tunnel to see if they’d float in there. We headed upstairs and checked out the other exhibits. There was a karaoke/performance studio that some bigger kids were already checking out. Peyton just wanted to sit and watch, though I know she was probably dying to try it out. One of the songs was “Let it Go” but she insisted she didn’t want to perform, even when the big kids were gone. We went into another room and each kid was handed a “task”. Brandon was supposed to come up with “something that can hear a fly sneeze” and Peyton had to come up with “a cartoon character”. They were given a box of mystery supplies to create their tasks. Both of them got into the task, though Brandon was a little “stuck” at first. He can create anything with Lego’s, but if you give him recycled materials, then he stalled a bit. Finally, he got going with something. I got pictures of both of their “creations”. Later, both went to turn in their boxes and showed the volunteer what they’d made. The volunteer was good with Peyton, picking up different pieces asking her “what’s this part?” and “what does this do?” She had pointed to the character’s arm, nose and eyes. But she didn’t come up with a name, she just called it “Nobody.” Brandon and I were the winners of the quarter, as we were in the clay animation room, and Brandon told me there was a boy named Justin from his school. He said he was in the 4th grade. He was too shy to say hi, but I wasn’t sure if he was right. Later, I saw the mom come in, and I work with her in our reading program. I didn’t know her son, but I definitely knew who she was. She was surprised I remembered her, though I am making an effort, since I try to put faces to the names I’m recording month after month. We chatted for a bit, and learned Justin was actual “Daniel” and that he’s in the 5th grade. Oops. The last activity that we did was a green screen activity. There was a slide in front of a camera, and it projected on different backgrounds – underwater, in space, and clouds.  I think the kids liked this the best.  They were being totally silly! Here is the video the kids made, with Dave’s minion.  Brandon’s Batman was attacking Olaf and the minion at the beach.  🙂  Good times.

After the museum, we headed out to the mall.  While we were there, I was checking out purses, while Dave was waiting for Brandon to tie his shoe.  We met up in the middle, when I heard, “ROBYN!”  I was stunned, and looked to my left to see Tracy, Joyce, Christian, and Vicky!  They were all shopping, and hanging out for lunch.  The last time we saw them was in LV, but I was sick then.  It was much nicer to see them under these circumstances.  Joyce hooked us up with free parking (saving us $17!), and then we went in different directions.  While we walked away, Peyton said, “We saw them in Las Vegas last time!”  She totally remembered.  We shopped for a bit, then gave the kids a snack at the bottom of our parking structure.  As we were headed out, we saw Norm picking Tracy up, and said hello to him, too!  We headed home and had dinner here.  I served my kale salad again, and this time, Brandon said, “YUM, it’s good now!”  I’m not sure why he had a fit yesterday, but is loving it today.  It did marinade overnight with the dressing I’d made with it, so I do agree it was better, but he asked for seconds, which is always a good sign.  Both kids went to sleep as I headed out to the gym.  Day #5 in a row 🙂  I ran 5 miles, then came home to a quiet house.

Brandon’s day

When I picked Brandon up from the big kids’ room, he was wearing his t-shirt, but he had a purple scarf wrapped around his neck. The theme of the day was “winter” so they’d made marshmallow snowmen using mini, regular, and gigantic marshmallows. I asked him how many he ate this time. He said, “We were told it was okay to eat 9 mini marshmallows.” Hmm…again, don’t know if that’s the truth, but I got rid of the bodies when we got home. I kept 3 out for him to finish up, but he forgot about them after dinner. The small snowman had his own scarf; it was part of a fruit roll-up. Dave same him when he got home, and he told him to take off the scarf, too, since it was a choking hazard. He said he had to teach someone how to tie it (he folded it in half, and then fed the ends through loop, like I wear some of my scarves). He did wear it well!

Last Day of Winter Break

For today, I had polar opposite kids again. Brandon was rushing us to get to school, while Peyton told me she didn’t want to go. I told her I wanted her to go for a little bit so she could see the fireman visit planned for today. Brandon didn’t care about going swimming as of this morning, so he told me to come get him later in the day. I told him around 4 pm, so he didn’t spend the last hour from 5-6 pm just playing video games. Yesterday, they made houses for their minion graham crackers, decorated with M&M’s. He was told to only eat one M&M. I’m not sure if that’s really the case. I got Brandon to school by 9 am. As I dropped him off, he asked me if I could come back early to get him, like around 11 am. I asked him why, and he said he wanted to go swimming, too. All this talk all morning long about how he wanted to get to school, and he didn’t want to go swimming or anything that Peyton and I were doing. All talk. I told him I’d come back for him before we went to the pool. Peyton was dropped off shortly after that. I didn’t really know what to do with myself for the couple of hours, since the visit wasn’t until 11 am, so I did something I haven’t done in a long time – shop by myself. I went to visit a new store that had just opened up somewhat close to Peyton’s school. I got there early before the stores even opened, so I did a few laps, walking around for about 20 minutes. Finally, I went in, and I didn’t find as much as I thought I would, but I got to try stuff on without anyone rushing me. I ended up with a wristlet that fits my phone, as well as a pair of shoes. I went back to pick Peyton up, and she was just finishing up lunch. Perfect timing! We took the rest to go, and we headed home. I decided to have her nap first before going to get Brandon. She slept a little, then I had her change into her suit. The pool is heated, and since the weather was fairly warm, especially for this time of year at 70, it would hopefully not be that bad. We got Brandon, and then he decided he wanted to change when we got there. We were in the pool by 3 pm, and both kids took turns waiting on the step like they were supposed to have during lessons. They needed reminders, but more or less stayed there. This time, Brandon was doing much better in the water, actually putting his strokes and breathing together before the end of our time in the pool today. He used to just pop his head straight up, but now he is getting used to turning his head to the side. Peyton just wanted to do flips, around and around in circles. She did practice her floating, and I would pretend that she fell in the deep in and had to get out on her own. I’d throw her, and she had to right herself and try to get back to the side of the pool on her own. She got very tired quickly, so she preferred to hang on me, while Brandon was practicing his strokes. I told them we were getting out of the pool by 4pm, and they were fine with that. I had Brandon shower outside, so I could watch him, then I had him change his clothes in the kids’ area, and signed him in to the kids’ club while I took Peyton inside the women’s locker room. Brandon threw a kink into my plans because he is too old to go into the locker room, and I had to watch out for his safety. He was happy to go into the club, so I wasn’t worried about him. Peyton and I showered up inside, and then we were all ready to leave, having cleaned up. I had brought snacks for after, to get us home in silence, and it worked! We got home, and Peyton and I started reading together, while Brandon worked on some legos until Dave came home. He’d taken the train today, since he knew I was off with the kids. They told him what we did today, and then we sat down for dinner. Dave has his fitness assessment tonight, so I got the kids down while he headed over to the gym. I’m curious to see what his reveals!
