Diagnosis

Brandon’s been “sick” for the past 3 weeks. Sick for him is a runny nose, and he had a post-nasal drip/cough for a little bit, but he seemed to be doing well. He went into the pool several times, and he didn’t complain. Until last night. He told me his ear hurt. I took a look at it just with a flashlight and naked eye, and it looked ok. I thought maybe he got water in his ear swimming, so I told him to put his ear down to the pillow to let the water drain. I didn’t hear anything further until right before practice. He complained again right as they were leaving for practice. Dave said he’d take him to urgent care after practice. I fed Peyton quickly, giving her a fave of salmon and beets. She is a huge fan of beets! We took off to the gym for a class I was trying to make at 7 pm. I dropped her off at the kids’ club, and she was excited. The teacher there remembered her from last week. I was a little worried about her since she was in the big kid room without Brandon, but even before I’d turned around, the teacher asked her how she was doing. I heard Peyton say, “Fine, my brother is at basketball today.” She answered!! Immediately!! Unheard of! I felt comfortable after that, then I headed upstairs to the cycle area first. I waited about 10 minutes before our class started. It’s called “Surfset”, and Dave remembers seeing it on Shark Tank. It’s like a surf session on land. It’s basically a surf board mounted on 3 slightly deflated exercise balls. I was a little worried, but it’s a beginner’s class, so I figured to give it a go. I was super wobbly at first, but I got a little better. It was fun though, and 30 minutes went by quickly. I hung around to talk to the instructor a little bit, then instead of showering right away, I went back to get Peyton before the kids’ club closed at 8pm. When I got there, they were rainbow-looming, and Peyton was sorting colors of rubber bands. She didn’t want to leave, even after I tried coaxing her out of there. I told her she could come back next time, nothing worked. Finally, the end of my workout came, when I hoisted her up over my shoulder to carry her out, crying the whole way out. I carried her out of the building, through the parking lot, and before both of us fell down, I set her down in the middle of the parking lot. She continued to cry in the car. Later, she told me the big kid whipped her in the eye with a rainbow loom and “didn’t even say sorry!” She got pushed around by another one, and I told her she was free to go to the baby room. She declined that, and I told her she had to stand up for herself in the big kid room. She said a kid took a ball away from her. She told him to give it back but he didn’t. She was smiling when I got her, so I don’t know that she was so miserable. I was only gone for less than an hour, so I don’t know how bad it could have been for her. We came home, and the boys hadn’t gotten back by then. It was almost 8 pm. I jumped in the shower with her, and she got happy again. I got her washed up, then finished up myself, and met her for a story in bed. The boys had gotten home by then, and Dave told me “ear infection” and he was going out to get the antibiotics. Poor guy! He hasn’t had one in 8 years, and bam! Right as he turns 8, he gets one. Hopefully this will clear him up all the way through, but he’s getting amoxicillin, which he had a slight rash in the past. It’s for 10 days, but luckily, it’s twice daily. Dave asked for tablets, since Brandon can tolerate them, but they are “horse pills” per Dave! They are pretty big, at 875 mg, but after breaking them in half, Brandon was able to get them down. He went to bed later, around 9 pm, and while he was in his bed, he told us, “My ear feels different now, like a little better.” I told him maybe it’s because the medicine is kicking in already! Placebo effect going on right now.
