Long Day

This morning, I woke up early to get the day started. Peyton had to go to school early so that we could get to swim on time. That set the whole day in motion. Brandon was going to Monterey Bay Aquarium. I was moving this morning, having to call more people than usual due to next week’s outage. While I was on hold with an interpreter close to lunchtime, I got a call from Michelle that Peyton was crying at camp. Her lunch had been dropped, and she was upset. She wasn’t next to M and A; she was sitting alone, sad. Michelle thinks maybe she started crying when she saw her. She was able to comfort her a bit offering her other food. Michelle was listed on the authorized pick up list, so the counselors asked if she wanted to take Peyton out for lunch. She was short on time, but graciously shared snacks with Peyton. She accepted, and later told me she silently thanked her. I informed her that wasn’t enough. At pick up, she was happy, and waved to me at pick up. She told me she had a great day, and when I pressed her, she didn’t answer. I asked her if she saw Auntie Michelle, and she asked me what I knew. I told her I was called, then she reviewed what she ate – macadamia nuts, chocolate covered almonds and two cookies in the shape of pineapples. Followed by, “They were yummy.” I joked that Peyton is going to spill her food again tomorrow. But I just reminded Peyton that Michelle and I are in a meeting tomorrow at lunch so she has no way out tomorrow. She told Dave people laughed at her for having a salad, and that she’d dropped her toppings, but ate her lettuce. She didn’t use dressing because it had goat cheese and she didn’t like goat cheese. Michelle gave her a tickle, since she’d offered a tickle or a hug, and then left. Later, she was telling me that she sounded like a kidnapper. Haha…and we’re talking about strangers, or people offering her food. At least we know Peyton trusts Auntie Michelle. OH, and she was wearing her helmet, as directed this morning. She hadn’t been yesterday, and the consequence of not would be no kandama for the camping trip. While Michelle was there, and Peyton was eating, Michelle suggested she take off her helmet to eat. Peyton declined and wore it all the while during lunch and back on the ice. Peyton told me she went to skate another two hours after lunch (Michelle confirmed from M that Peyton went back to join A and M – they’d finished up lunch first, that’s why they weren’t with her when she was eating.) My NP co worker and I were walking and talking about how cool it was to have a “village” in our work crew. Michelle told the counselors she was Peyton’s friend’s mom, then corrected and said, Peyton’s mom’s friend. Either way, she was correct đŸ™‚ A big thank you to Auntie Michelle for saving the day.

After camp, we rushed to swimming, and had enough time to stop by home for her to go potty. We met Dave and Brandon there, and then Dave took off to do camping errands. I told the kids if they messed around at swim, they’d owe me laps. Last time, I think it was 4, so I doubled the “fine” for consequences. Brandon tested me, and he earned 8, then later 12. But he ended up with 8 when it was all said and done. Peyton walked away with free time. We headed to the club to swim. When we arrived, the WIBIT was set up. The kids were super excited, but I told Brandon he owed me his laps first. The swim instructor saw me looking at the WIBIT, and I was explaining to the kids that they would have to take the swim test before going on the structure. The swim guy told me they had to swim the width of the shallow pool and back without touching bottom. They were both hesitant, but I told them they couldn’t go out there without taking the test. I told the instructor both kids just came from swim class, and that they could do it. Peyton can’t really touch bottom anyway, but Brandon was first guy out. He did just fine, and he was told he passed. Peyton went out, and she also swam well, and she was given the thumbs up. Peyton headed for the line, while Brandon gave me his laps. I took several videos of them. I was dressed in a suit, but I didn’t want to change and be wet, so I let them handle themselves. There were life guards stationed around the pool, and I watched as they swam back each time. I did leave them to buy dinner, after I was sure they were capable of handling themselves. At one point, the two of them were together in line, and they were fighting in place. Brandon turned to the guy behind her, and he told him, “Want to cut me?” and gave up his place in line. It was a mature way of dealing with the situation.

I was still counting Brandon’s laps, while Peyton did her first slide.

There was no race, but the kids seemed to take it on as a challenge:

Last run for her:

It was 7 pm before I pulled them out for dinner. Brandon ate two large tilapia filets, while Peyton ate half. He said, “I’m eating what I saw today.” That reminded me to ask him what he purchased. I was going to give him 10$, then he asked for an extra dollar left over from the movies last time, when he didn’t order anything. He said, “In case my gift is $9.99, and I need extra for tax.” Fair enough! He said he bought a mini orca, and told me, “Everything there is over-priced!” Haha…I had to laugh. He took the camera with him, and he said he only snapped a few pictures. We were home by 8 pm, which means they ate fairly quickly, in less than 30 minutes…they played on the structure while I called Dave, who was selling a bike, and not going to make it. We left just after that.

New week…New Camp

This week, Brandon is in marine science camp, that has a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium mid-week. Peyton was signed up for ice skating lessons after her birthday party held there earlier in the year. Mckayla and Annabelle were also enrolled. Peyton doesn’t know Annabelle well, but I reminded her to act like a big girl and don’t throw fits, and they will all get along well. If not, I told her to walk away and find other friends. I know she can be persistent, and since she is the “little” girl, I wasn’t sure if she’d be three’s a crowd. In the meantime, Michelle was reminding Mckayla to include Peyton, since she and A are good friends. I picked Brandon up at the end of his day. He was in the potty while I was there signing him out, and I didn’t see him at first. He was meh about the camp, saying he liked last week better. This camp is “academic enrichment” so Dave thought I was being cruel. But at the old site, they were just going to the Boardwalk, so I didn’t think that was too exciting for him. Dave had Peyton as I knew I’d be spending a lot of time with her next week. So, I took Brandon to hang out with me and a few friends gathering for an out of town friend’s visit. We chatted with Peyton about her day, since I didn’t want to rely on Dave’s account from her. I knew she’d be in bed by the time we got home, so I didn’t bother waiting. She was so tired, she wasn’t too responsive. Not her usual chatty self. In fact, she was sighing at the prospect of answering another one of my questions. So, I told her goodnight, and Brandon and I enjoyed Thai food. We went to get some books for MJ, who is turning two soon, and Brandon picked one out about tanks. He sat through the conversation, on his end of the table, and later scooted to sit next to MJ to keep her entertained. She didn’t know what to think at first, but he won her over. We wrapped up right around 9 pm, and we were saying goodbye in front of our car. Brandon asked to be let in, and he was prompted to say goodnight, before plopping himself in and buckling up. He was totally fine being in the dark, with us right there chatting. We drove home, and he was very quiet if not asleep. He hits his limit, despite telling all the girls that he could stay up all night, and then he’s down for the count. He showered up, brushed, and got himself to bed.

This morning, Peyton woke up, and I rushed her to get ready. She asked for a quick cuddle, so I gave her a tight squeeze. As I braided her hair, she told me all about her day. She said M, A and she got along skating. I asked her if there were any tears, and she said no. She said she only wore her helmet during the lesson portion, but not during free skate. They played follow the leader. She said she was the leader, and she fell. On purpose. And then the other girls fell, too, because they were following her. She told me that at one point, A told M that she didn’t want to play with her anymore. I asked her what she did, and she told me, “I just walked away from that situation. Well, I just skated away, because I was on skates. Teehee.” They all came together again, and then she told me that on the bus, they had to separate. Only three to a seat, but I guess there was someone else there already. She said M was bothering her on the bus. I asked her how. She said, “Because I was just trying to go to sleep.” I told her Auntie Michelle told M to be nice to P, so she was trying to be nice! She showed me a big bruise on her knee, but otherwise, she seemed like she had lots of fun! She also had a few friends from the week before, since it’s the same site she was at last week.

Today, I picked her up, and she told me she stayed awake on the bus this time and chatted with M. The counselors noticed Brandon’s absence, but were excited for him about his field trip. They were planning our camping trip (they were supposed to do this yesterday, but I guess they forgot). P wants to stay in the tent with M. I reminded her about K, and she said, “K’s coming, too?!? We can ALL stay in the tent together!” We’ll have to find them a tent so they can stay together…Today, Peyton didn’t wear her helmet at all, so we had a talk about safety. We’ll see how the rest of the week goes!

Hiking

I’d contacted Alexa early last week to hang out.  We’d first met in Girl Scout brownies for my first two years in public school. I left the school and GS for private school.  I then changed school districts before joining with my own city’s district for high school.  We remembered each other and the friendship resumed!! Amazing that time didn’t matter.  I tell the kids all the time that the friends they are meeting now could be lifelong friends.

Instead of going to coffee and sitting around, I decided to ask if she wanted to catch up while waking or hiking.  She wasn’t opposed and is in pretty good shape, so after working for a few hours after dropping off kids, I met at her place.  She drove to the trail head and we set out.  Initially, I thought we were going paved, but the trail was shady.  I’d had a hat and glasses along with my water bottle, so I was good.  Parts were pretty sunny, and we stopped to drink.  We walked up and up toward the reservoir before deciding we’d gotten up enough.  We headed mostly back the way we came.  After we reached the bottom, I’d had at least 13,000 steps for the day, so we probably hiked about six miles or so round trip.  Parts were pretty steep, and luckily we survived in running shoes.  We headed to eat after.  I ordered a salad so as not to undo all the good we did.  We headed back to her place so I could pick up my car. It was about four or so. She was showing me her collection of children’s books (she’s a preschool teacher).  I even suggested one for her that we were given.  I went to get the kids from their first full week of Y camp. Both were all smiles!! Peyton had a great day at the water slides.  She was still too short for the slides but enjoyed the lazy river.  She said she fell asleep on the bus home. Brandon stayed on campus the whole day but was wearing his glasses and hat as requested. We just waited for Dave to come home for dinner!! That’s when Brandon was showing me his tricks.

Birthday Celebration, Running

Yesterday, I headed to my step class with the kids while Dave went to his eye appointment at my work. We went to get one thing at the mall, then headed to get a cake for my mom’s birthday. We met Dave at home, then Peyton and I took a nap. I heard Dave say, “Uh-oh” as they were headed out for a bike ride. Peyton didn’t mind, as she proceeded to curl herself around me. She fell asleep again until my grandma, aunt and uncle showed up. Brandon and Dave returned from their ride before my mom came in from her commute. The restaurant opened at 430 pm, and it didn’t take reservations, so we arrived at 425 pm. Geriatic dinner for sure! We had a little wait, then the door opened. We had to order food first before we were seated for the Korean side dishes. We’d gone there for my birthday a couple of years ago with all the families, so our party of 8 didn’t seem too big, but the restaurant only sat 49 people. There was only a twenty person rush or so, then another mad rush at 530 pm. We were done after 6 pm, and we headed home. We started playing a round of MJ, while Brandon did kandama, and Peyton and I worked on a puzzle with my aunt. We took a break for cake and coffee. Since the cake was coffee-based, then the kids got to pick out their own dessert. Peyton picked a raspberry macaron, and Brandon got a chocolate croissant, which they happily ate. We took pictures, then the kids went to sleep. Dave went to pick up yet another bike from someone on CL, so I took over his game. We started another game, and we didn’t finish until after 11 pm. Dave had already set up his running outfit, while I had to scramble in my mental check list to get everything organized. I had a little coffee with dessert, but it was enough, along with the race nerves, which always set in, to not have me sleep until after midnight. I slept until the alarm woke me up. We got ready, then Peyton came in to potty. She told me, “Well, I guess there is not enough time for us to snuggle, right?” I told her no, but I did give her a hug after she was done. Then she said, “Well, I’ll just go snuggle with Grandma later.” I asked her to make sure she waited until 7 am. We headed out to SC, with little traffic. We arrived early, and since we had Dave’s car, we parked on the street instead of the lot. We took the bus in to the start, and we had our breakfast on the street. We had over an hour to wait, but it finally passed. We had our phones, but that meant it started our battery drain early. I listened to my music while tracking myself. Dave and I started together, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up. Not bad considering I hadn’t run much at all since the Bay To Breakers. I crossed the finish, then proceeded to find Dave. We ended up staying in town to get an acai bowl for me, though Dave got one, too, then coffee for Dave in his favorite place. We headed back over the hill and were home just in time for lunch. We had leftovers and food that my grandma had brought the day before. Dave and I headed for a nap, as did Peyton, while Brandon stayed up with my mom. After we woke up, we headed to the gym for a swim. My mom did some aerobic exercise, while Peyton and Brandon did some laps. They “owed” me laps from the last lesson they took. They were messing around, so Brandon owed me two laps, while Peyton did four for her misbehavior earlier in the day. They both got them done, then were free to play with me in the pool. Dave watched from above, especially when they were doing laps. We showered them up right after 5 pm before coming home to eat dinner that Dave prepared. They went to sleep a bit later than usual, but they were out right away. We’re just wrapping up and preparing ourselves for the next week.
Here is our selfie from the race before it got too crowded in our corral.

Yo Mama

While we were in high school/college, “yo mama” jokes were en vogue. I have to hold my tongue when the kids make snarky comments and avoid telling them, “Your mama!” Until today. Peyton was talking to Brandon, telling him off about something, then he said, “Oh ya, your mom does that!” I totally forgot what they were talking about, as it was dinner time, and I just wanted them to eat. Dave and I just looked at each other….then at Brandon. I just told him to eat. Kandama-ing

Brandon has been bringing his kandama to camp since yesterday. He said he was able to bring it, and so far, they aren’t complaining. Maybe this is why he’s having such a great day. He said he sat in the aisle on the bus (with seatbelts), and he was practicing.
Here are some slo-mo videos of him. He was so happy, he wanted to show Daddy. He said, “In your face! He said I couldn’t do it.”

I love the BOOM sound it makes.

Great field trip!

Brandon went to the space center today which was over an hour away. He didn’t take pictures because he said there were too many touch exhibits and not many look exhibits. He said he spent his money on gifts that had Chabot on them and brought his change back.  He said he did the math and they gave him the correct change.  He was only supposed to spend ten dollars from a twenty.  He brought back ten dollars and some change! With his receipt.  And no, he didn’t buy any food and ate his lunch.  He’s growing up!! He’s been learning more on his kandama. Gross…But Funny Response

Peyton was getting ready for bed and telling me about her day. She told me about the boy who had a bad day yesterday had another bad day. He was throwing people’s stuff around and his mom had to be called again today. I asked her what his name was, and she said, “Jake, from State Farm.” Then she told me, “And somebody pooped in the pool today.” I think I had a stunned response, and then, without a beat, she cupped her hand to her mouth and said, “Yeah, THAT, is disgusting.” She proceeded with, “Like 10 of my friends had already told me about it, so I didn’t need to know about it anymore.” I asked, “Wow, you have 10 friends?” She started to count on her fingers, “One, two, three, four, okay, like four.
