We woke up by 6 am to arrive to the field by 7 am. There was already one dad there, but his daughter was in Japanese school, so he was by himself. Peyton made sure to tell us that she was the first KID there. This was already after a stop for breakfast, which Peyton didn’t eat.
The game was a bit rough. Peyton did great at the plate, going three for three, and 3 RBI’s. She scored once. We struggled in pitching, but that was to be expected.
We went to eat a little breakfast, round 2, but again, Peyton didn’t eat. She doesn’t eat much when she’s in tournaments. The next game started at 1130 am, meaning that warm ups started at 1030 am. We were the visitors, so we were up first. Peyton walked the first inning, then her teammate started pitching in the bottom of the inning. Her teammate walked 5, and had a girl hit off her before being pulled out. Peyton then went in. She walked the first batter she faced, but then struck out the next girl with two balls, then three strikes in a row. She walked the next batter, which then ended the inning, as the other team had scored 5 at this time. Peyton was then up again, and she singled, scoring two of her teammates (2 RBIs).
Peyton was pitching again. This time, she walked the first batter, then struck out her next batter. Her next batter popped up, and Peyton ran to get it. She got a glove on it, but it bounced out, and then she was stunned and didn’t chase it down. Runners ran around by this time. After another couple of walks, the coach took Peyton out and put in her other teammate. That inning ended up in 5 runs (the max). Peyton then popped up and the catcher caught. This is not something we typically see, though we usually practice it with the catchers. We only got 4 runs this inning for a total of 9 to 10. We headed home, and the kids got to relax. Peyton did practice piano immediately after coming home (and showering). She’s a trooper! We had them go to bed early, since we found out that the next game would be again at 8 am.
This morning, we got up early and headed out even earlier than yesterday. This time, Peyton did eat a little more breakfast. We arrived by 645 am, and the president and another 10 U coach had just arrived as well. The other coach joked that he wished Peyton could join their team. He’s seen Peyton’s defense work against him during the rec season. He didn’t know she was struggling a bit at the plate, but he’s seen her on the other side of it.
This morning we played the same team as we had lost to last night, 9-10. I saw one of the coaches reviewing the brackets, and he told another man, “Yes, this is the team we beat yesterday.” I had to bite my tongue to avoid saying, “And you won’t do it again!” We were again the visitors, so we started at bat first. Peyton was the second one at bat. She walked. With some walks, we got 4 runs up, but stranded 3 runners.
Her teammate started pitching first at the bottom of the inning. She struck two batters out, and had a fair amount of walks, which unfortunately, ended the inning at 4-5.
It was the top of the 2nd inning, Peyton pop flied to short stop, but with more walks, we got the score up to 9-5.
At the bottom of the inning, Peyton was in to pitch. This is from the app that we were using to keep track of the score.

I noticed something she had been doing since Friday, which was lifting up her foot. I mentioned it, and she admitted it was something new. Dave corrected action and informed her that these things were throwing off her timing, and she shouldn’t be messing around! Well, she pitched this inning with her toe down, as she had even just a week ago. She found her rhythm!
The score was still 9 to 5 our lead with us starting a new inning. We got on base through many walks, but Peyton had another bases loaded situation and popped out to pitcher. Her teammates were hitting better and drove another 5 runs in to end the inning 14 to 5. Since we were only in the third inning, the limit of 5 runs was still in effect. The old limit used to be 4 runs, and anything after the 4th inning, there are an unlimited amount of runs that can be scored. Peyton put up a bunch of walks, then she was pulled by her coach. Her teammate came in and got a strikeout before walking in the 5th run of the inning. Final score 14-10!
That meant we had another game at 3 pm. We went home again to rest; Peyton took a short nap before we headed back to the fields. The semi-final game was to be against the host’s team, which was undefeated.
We were batting first, and Peyton walked. Then, she stole second base, and it was a close throw down by a competent catcher. She had to slide, which she did perfectly! She got all dusty, but she used her sliding pads and was unharmed. Another mom was just asking me what the things on Peyton’s legs were. I told her that they were for if she ever decided to slide. Well, she picked a great time to do it. She had good form, per Dave, with her foot tucked under the top foot (figure 4), and her hands up. She was also wearing her batting gloves, which she hadn’t been up until recently.
Unfortunately, she was stranded on third base, after working so hard to get there. Her teammate pitched for the first inning.
Peyton pitched the second inning after the team went scoreless in the top of the second. She had a few walks, then two strikeouts in a row. She couldn’t close it out, and the score at that time was 0-10. The third inning was cut short with the other team going up by 12 runs, which is the ‘mercy’ rule. The coach was pleased that the team did as well as they did for their first tournament. It is not easy to win a game on Sunday, as it places the team in the semi-finals already. So glad we got them that experience early on. We’ll have a few more tournaments for the rest of the summer.
