Sports day

This morning, Peyton had her first pitching lesson with a coach who was driving up from Fresno. She came recommended by a dad who we know whose daughter is a year older than Brandon. She was running late, but we arrived early enough to get some warm ups in. Last night, we’d already taken both kids out to work on their fielding. I had to hit balls to Brandon since Dave was the recipient at first base. Surprisingly, I was able to hit all 10 balls requested of me to Brandon, who was at short stop. peyton worked on her pop flies, then headed to an hour of basketball practice. B and G got to play, and though G says she’s not good at basketball, she shot a few in Brandon’s face!

The coach arrived just after 830 am, and she had a chance to meet Peyton. She liked that she was already warmed up. They got to know each other a bit, then they started with some drills. She told us Peyton was “coachable” and made adjustments as requested. She didn’t waste our time! It ended promptly at 930 am, giving us just enough time to get to the park and sign her in for evaluations. Well, it was evaluations for the other kids who are old enough, but for Peyton, it was really a try out. She has to make it in the top half of the draft before she will be allowed to play with the “big” kids. She has more kids she knows and will play with at this level than the lower level, and we think she’ll do better skill-wise to play with the older kids. The draft will be on Wednesday, so we’ll see how she fares.

She started off by meeting the KP MD coach that I’d been in contact with to get the low down. He went up to her to say hi, then I came up with her number. I let him know that I was the one who had been in contact with him, and introduced him to Peyton. He told me he figured out who she was already. She was the tiniest one out there.

I really wanted her to catch her pop flies as our friend was saying this was an important dividing line between the top and bottom, and she did, 2 out of 2! I missed the first one, because I was chatting with the moms. I had to text Dave, who asked me, “Why weren’t you watching?!” I had to text Dave to remind Peyton to wear her mask. He told me to go down and tell her, since not many other girls were wearing them. I drew out on the drawing pad “WEAR YOUR MASK” and it animated. Apparently, she got the message, as she was wearing it. On the second throw back to second after catching the pop fly at short, one of the coaches watching shouted, “WOW!”

She bobbled a hit to second, but then picked up the second ball. She fielded two cleanly at short stop, and made the throw to first. This was another metric that our friend encouraged us to make sure she could do, as this separates the top from the bottom in 10u. They were allowed 5 balls off the pitching machine. She hit the first ball up the middle, then she fouled off three and totally missed one. Some girls missed all of them, so she had contact at least.

She wrapped up pitching some.

She definitely wasn’t the best, but she wasn’t terrible either. Hopefully she gets picked up as a work in progress.

After her try outs, we had to rush Brandon to his evaluations. His is truly evaluations, since he’s age-appropriate for his division. Dave had to drop by home to pick up Brandon’s shoes, and I stayed back to feed Peyton. Then, we headed to get our cookies for the year. But, I hadn’t accounted that we were so late from Peyton’s try outs, that we were going to be late for her game. So, Dave, who had forgotten Brandon’s basketball clothes (his coach from basketball was going to be to baseball and take him to the basketball game), came to get Peyton from me. I loaded 20+ cases into my car, then dropped them off at home, to then go back to Peyton’s game. Brandon’s basketball game was at 3 pm, so Dave had to leave Peyton’s game early. I could tell he didn’t want to leave, since he kept lingering. It was confirmed from Peyton, who told me “Daddy said he didn’t want to leave, and he wanted to watch the game!” It was close, and we were playing his ex-coworker’s daughter. Peyton had half-dozen steals, just as she had last night at their practice scrimmage. She also had about 10 rebounds. She also got a “prize” / goodie for boxing out, something only two of them were doing today. She was moving some girl all around the floor with her subtle hip checks while on defense.

As I was leaving, I ran into the dad who recommended the pitching coach to tell him all about the evals and the pitching lesson. He was happy to hear about her performance, though I realize it may not be quite objective. He wanted his friend (the KP MD) to pick Peyton up. I told him that I’d prefer that over another coach we knew from last summer who Dave didn’t like as he yelled at the kids and was very negative. We rushed over to the last 3/4 of Brandon’s game. He had done well in the first half, Dave said, scoring 3 baskets. The team was tied when we arrived, then there was a run on the score, as the team went up by double digits. Dave thinks Brandon has really improved, having a few steals and playing aggressive defense. That’s one thing neither kid has a problem with, aggressive play! After his game, the other baseball parents told us that they didn’t finish up evaluations. So, back to the school we went. Brandon had not yet hit, so he took some swings off the pitching machine.

He also did some pitching, and then it was time to go.

Fortunately for him, he was the only left handed pitcher. He was very slow but he threw strikes. Actually, he hasn’t thrown a pitch in over 6 months or more, so all things considered, he did fairly well with that. So, we brought home two tired kids to practice piano 🙂 I had made a deal with them that we wouldn’t have to do it first thing in the morning, and they were happy at the time. But, we did squeeze it in before a dinner out, and some mochi dessert before bringing home our tired kids for sleep.

Peyton has a tournament tomorrow, back in my hometown area. She’ll play in two games, with the girls’ team. There are 7 of them, and only 5 of them can hit the rim consistently. And only 2-3 of them can actually get it IN the rim. She’ll get to play with H, versus just scrimmaging against her or playing on the alternating team for their other team. Thunder and lightning (what Dave calls them) will be in full effect tomorrow.
