First girls tourney

The girls broke away from the boys to play their own games today. The first game was at 9 close to my hometown. I wanted to make sure we were there early. Brandon wanted to make sure he got up early. So that he didn’t get left behind. He was up at 615. He clearly got up in enough time. Peyton woke up just fifteen minutes later and came in. We got moving and got up to the gym as set up was happening. That meant the girls got more time to shoot. H’s older sister F slept in at home while their mom told me G wanted to come along for the food. And to shoot around with B, which they did. The first game was relatively high scoring game with Peyton getting a handful of steals (Dave thinks 7-8). Toward the end, she was told to pass it and no longer shoot. She got the ball to the two that don’t hit rim, but she was still able to pass it. I think G was keeping score, and it was 16-12, Peyton’s team.
There were two games running simultaneously, and there was a whistle blown on the other court. Our kids stopped, then as they realized it wasn’t their whistle, this happened:

The girls passed really well, enough to have their 70 year old coach say, “The girls’ passing is INSANE!”

After the game, we said goodbye to H’s family who went home. The older two girls had games in two different locations. We went to my mom’s to get her back to the school. We brought her back to watch the boys’ game. They didn’t fare as well against their team. Then, we had another game to watch, so we stayed to watch our friend’s game, and then it was Peyton’s turn again. They were playing on the larger court, in the main gym area against a team from SF. They were a 2nd/3rd grade team, and much bigger. H’s dad thought it was going to be a tough match up, and he wasn’t wrong. The kids were much taller. And the score was very low. The first two minutes were played with a larger, heavier ball, and Peyton missed a few. She couldn’t even hit the rim with the ball! H’s dad noticed and walked over to the coach to question it. The ref checked the ball and sure enough it was too large. After switching out the ball, the girls were doing much better. Baskets were still harder to come by, but they were getting them up higher. Peyton has 3 soccer teammates, and they all had no problem running up and down the larger court. Peyton was getting visibly tired, with the longer distance to travel. She let one girl pass her up and take one to the basket. Fortunately, that was one of two scored by the opposing team. Peyton was not shut down by the coaches this time, and she scored 3 baskets, but also spread it out among her teammates. One of her teammates, so very sweet, told her mom she doesn’t want to play. She is super sweet, but doesn’t have a lot of understanding for the game. At one point, Peyton had to back up so the girl didn’t block her shot as she was shooting. Fortunately, it went in. They ended up beating the team 12 to 4, but it was a hard-fought game!

We stayed again to watch the boys’ team, which was just after ours. I was secretly hoping that Peyton would be called up to help them. Both teams had only 7 kids today, and with each team having 1-2 kids that cannot hit rim (I think Peyton has 3 out of 7 who cannot), it puts a lot of pressure on the others to get open and shoot. Dave refers to P and H as “thunder and lightning”. H is a soccer player, and definitely has speed on her side. Peyton can create shots and make swift passes to her teammates, almost too hard at times.

Rebounds and the pass!

She didn’t like this video as it didn’t end with a score…but I like the toughness and aggressive play from these girls!
Throughout the whole tourney ,the thing that put a smile on my face more than anything was 1) hearing Brandon cheer from the sidelines, and 2) having him tell her “Great job on the steals!”
