Baseball Kids

Today, Peyton had her first softball practice. We had piano as usual, then I had to rush to get gas, in the opposite direction of home, but I was counting miles. I was at 10. And coasting everywhere. So we went home, changed really quickly, then headed out. Brandon had warmed up rice, and he took that to the field to eat. He was grumptastic because he was being rushed and wanted his afternoon snack. He kept it together and ate on the field, while Peyton and I found the coach with his girls setting up the field. Peyton grabbed a base, while I grabbed a base and a tee. We walked over to help set up. Peyton answered the coach’s questions when asked (easy ones, Peyton, Kindergarten, Yes [Do you know Carley?], Mrs. Manundo), which was progress to her selective mutism. I introduced myself to the Coach’s wife, and then we met up with another coach and his daughter. I started throwing with Peyton, but since I didn’t have a glove, I had her soft toss it back to me. She stopped after awhile because more kids started showing up. She even said, “I’m all done,” and then threw her glove down. She went over to the other girls and started doing cartwheels. Finally, practice started. I left her to go get the water bottle in the car, and I wanted to see what she’d do. They were warming the kids up by a “jog” through the field. As we were walking away, I caught a bit of it. I didn’t know if she’d do it, but here she is!

Brandon and I came back, and then Dave came to get Brandon to take him to practice. I was able to chat more with the moms. Natalie brought Sydney, and she was all decked out in new gear. It was color neutral so that Drew can use it when he’s of age. Sydney was happy to see Peyton, and when the girls all introduced each other, Sydney said, “I know Peyton!” I’m so glad Peyton has friends on the team, and she was integrating well. She was in the first group to bat. She watched the first girl, then got herself suited up. She volunteered to be second by just walking up to the plate. The coach set up the ball on the tee, and Peyton hit the base of the tee, but still hit the ball. Later, she hit a solid shot, and then proceeded to hit 6 more balls. The coach asked her, “You look like you’ve done this before, have you?” Peyton gave him one authoritative, slow nod. She happily picked up the balls, then she got behind the cage to mess around with Carley, who’d batted first. Later, she went off to throw, and I was less concerned with her safety by that point. The coaches are too busy instructing, and the parents too busy talking to watch the girls with the bats. Luckily, I have no other kids to watch, but I’m a bit hesitant to have to talk to other kids whose parents are sitting right there, even though they aren’t doing anything. It’s a touchy place to be, especially so early in the season. After practice, Peyton wanted to go watch Brandon’s practice. Luckily we did, as they were scrimmaging Tom’s team. On the way over, she told me, “Well, that was a better practice.” I asked her, “Than what?” She said, “Last year, practices were on Thursdays. And today is Thursday. You know, I didn’t listen as well last year. But I am now.” I commended her for a good practice today. I’m still so sad to miss her first game! We got there right as Brandon was up. Here’s what we saw…

We got home late, but good thing Brandon had done most of his homework at piano. They ate dinner quickly, and Peyton went up first to take a bath. When I got her to bed, she didn’t hesitate, said, “Good night” and was out. Brandon was still eating more, and then went to take a bath, too. Phew…late night for them.

I called Dave on my way home to make sure he didn’t pick up a kid unbeknownst to me like last time. He was just five minutes away, ahead of me. I picked Peyton up then headed to the gym. Brandon was doing his homework with Dave there. Peyton was in her outfit for “Wacky Wednesday” part of the Dr Seuss week. She got some skills time in with Dave. In her tutu. 🙂

After she was done, we headed home. We ate dinner, practiced piano, then headed back to school. I dropped her off with Dave, then I headed to the library to check in on my co-lead who was setting up her presentation at the library. We chatted a bit, then I headed to the restaurant to meet the team. I saw the coach and his wife first, and we started talking. Dave knows the wife from Walk A Thon. They are working together, and Dave made the connection for her, as she wasn’t aware. I know the Coach as he is my reader (and also missing training), and then Natalie, Sydney’s mom showed up. She was wondering why I didn’t step up to Team Admin, and she ended up doing it. I told her I’d help out, but I wasn’t able to make the meeting last night. The coach’s daughter is in a Daisy troop in 1st grade at school, and the mom knows about our troop. The other coach is a neighbor of the head coach, and they were on the same team last year. Each of the families knows another family on the team. When I got home, I told Dave all about our team. We looked through our yearbook from the year that Brandon and the coach’s daughter would have overlapped. We learned that she was on the same team as Peyton’s teammate last year. The coach’s wife and I were talking about Stella, not knowing that we were talking about the same girl, I realized in looking at the yearbook. Then, Dave started looking at the baseball teams more and started seeing all the kids’ faces. Year after year, some kids drop out, but most of them just change teams or coaches. Dave thinks it’ll be a smaller and smaller pool of kids as they get older; it’s just a matter of outlasting the attrition rate. We’ll see if Brandon wants to continue that long! Now we’re crossing over to the girls’ side and will need to make connections there.

GS Meeting

This afternoon, I picked the kids up from CDC. Peyton reported a purple card today, but lost a few stars for socializing at inappropriate times. We came home, did homework, practiced piano, and practiced with Brandon for his audition tomorrow. Peyton showered up, ate dinner, and got ready for our GS meeting. Dave came home right before I had to leave, and Peyton and I took off. Brandon and Dave went out to do some baseball errands. We arrived early to the meeting, and the host was still just getting into the house with her daughter. She took the dog out, and Peyton played with the two girls who were there already. I helped where I could, to set up for the meeting. The girls were making a card out of puzzle pieces and a bird feeder. I didn’t hear their story today, but they were learning camp songs while the parents were settling up on cookies. Everyone heard that Peyton was the top cookie-seller of the troop and was asking me about how we did it. We were told that the pooled boxes would go to the girls who needed help getting to the next prize. I was secretly shooting for 350, just because it was the next round number, though the next prize was 400. One of the troop leaders were trying hard to get Peyton to talk to her. She’d answer her slowly, with one or two word answers. But she got her to pinkie swear on a full sentence next time. I think it’s a game Peyton is playing. The other leader, whose house we were at, came out to review the hand motions to the song they just learned. I pretended like I didn’t know what they were doing, and I told Peyton to show me. They went through it, and Peyton told her goodnight before we left. While we were driving home, I started singing the song, “Down by the banks of the hankey pankey where the bull frogs jump from bank to bank” and Peyton asked, “Wait, you KNOW that song?!” She was incredulous that I would know such a silly song. Little does she know…they were also singing “Boom Chicka Boom” which brings me back to Unicamp days and further back, from girl scouts camp. Glad she is having fun!

Monday Monday

Today, Peyton was happy to get to snuggle this morning, since I was still home. Dave likes to mess with her, but she will push him away and say, “Mama.” Such a momma’s girl. The kids were wearing their favorite colors today for spirit day. While we were picking out clothes last night, I asked Peyton what her favorite color(s) were. She said, “Well of course my favorite colors are pink and purple, so, let’s pick pink and purple.” She had a purple ensemble, but her purple jacket was not laundered, so it was a pink jacket for her. Today was also “Read Across America Day”, so I reminded her to be respectful of her reader. I went to pick the kids up from CDC, but I got a text from Dave that he was already at the middle school. Too bad I was already in front of CDC, not having checked my texts while I was driving 🙁 I dropped off the school forms to register for next year, and then chatted with the director and informed her that the kids will be in golf soon. I went to the middle school, and I found the kids. Funny thing was that Peyton was picking up balls that she’d hit, but she didn’t see me. I walked toward Dave, and was fully on the field, but she was absorbed in what she was doing. I watched the boys throw around, and then another mom came to drop off her son, and we chatted. She was on the team last fall, so we talked about running, as her husband is into marathons. Finally, Peyton was ready to go, so we headed out of the cold. She was excited to tell me about her purple card (like her outfit), and what books she read. They read a “Wocket in my Pocket” and got to design their own monsters. (She says she doesn’t want to be a teacher anymore, but she wants to be a policewoman.) We finished up dinner, then she read some more while I cleaned up. We practiced piano after the boys got home, and then she was off to bed. Brandon was pooped today. He ate, showered, and then said he was tired, so there was no more anything. No reading, no piano. No joke. Good thing he’d already done his homework. He said he got all of his spelling words right, so he doesn’t have to take the quiz on Friday. But he still needed to practice his words for the week. While I tucked her in, Peyton said, “Well, tomorrow’s Tuesday, so I won’t be able to snuggle with you.” But I reminded her of her GS meeting, which marks the end of our cookie sales for the year. Thanks to everyone for the support!

Flipped Schedule

This morning, Dave took Peyton to practice her hitting and fielding. That meant I had Brandon to myself to practice for his audition on Wednesday. He was telling me how some parents will watch toward the end of class, so I told him to go earlier, so they weren’t around. He said, “What’s the difference? Eventually, people are going to see me on stage anyway, so I don’t care when I go.” Wow! No stage fright?! I didn’t introduce what it was, in case he doesn’t have/get it. So, I told him I’d work with him for an hour. He was okay with that and studied his script. Then, we looked at videos from back in the day, and found the specific version he’d be doing. Other kids were singing, so it was easier to follow along with the timing. The last test was to sing on his own with just the soundtrack. We worked on putting it all together, and then he did a few dry runs, from his actual introduction then leading into the song. He has to give his name, a few facts about himself, (he chose, “I am on two basketball teams, and I like to read for fun!”) and then introduce his song. He did all of that, and after a few times, it worked! The hour was up, and we headed on foot to where Dave had last texted. It was the field at the neighboring middle school, not the kids’, so we had to walk in a different direction. Brandon was in shorts, and admittedly, he was cold! That made him put a little more spring in his step, and he was okay to run with me for a little bit. I told him he had to practice for his triathlon, and he didn’t mind. About a mile in, I checked my phone, and my plea to wait for us was answered with, “We left already.” Oops, so I told Brandon the bad news after a mile or so in. We only had a few more blocks to our destination, but we turned right back around. I’d been carrying around cash to deposit in the ATM from our cookie sales, so I wanted to go with Dave. But since plans changed, I was walking back that way, and asked Dave to come from the grocery store to the bank, where I’d be. By the time we got to the bank, we’d walked 2 miles, and in a faster time than I do with my coworker, including stopping at the lights, which we don’t have to do at work. Great workout! Brandon and I arrived and started the deposit when Dave pulled up. Perfect timing! I’d actually thought he was another customer, and was worried about our safety, but when I saw it was him, I was able to continue depositing all the bills. I had a bunch of small bills that I didn’t want in my wallet, but it was kind of silly to deposit so many of them, with the sum being not that big. After that, we headed home. Dave left with Brandon for the birthday party, while I took Peyton to the library. She was there to get her sticker for reaching 850 books. Only 150 to go before she goes to first grade! We got a refill of books, and some for Brandon, too, then turned around and came home. I got Peyton a quick lunch, and she told me she wasn’t tired. So, she got started on her reading after she was done eating. I waited to see how long that would last, and she kept plugging away. After awhile, I practiced piano with her, then we decided to head out to Brandon’s practice. She hadn’t really walked today, so it was a good chance to do so. She whined a bit until she asked if we could listen to the radio. She was happy to hear all the princess songs that came up, and we made it without any trouble. We waited about 30 minutes, but we got to see a few hits.
Good thing Peyton didn’t get injured in the making of this video. She was climbing around, and I ignored her while I was shooting this. After we helped Dave clean up their stuff, we all headed home and actually had a vegan meal tonight! Maybe my challenge is affecting Dave after all 🙂 He cooked tofu, broccoli, and cauliflower, while I supplemented with the soup/stew I made in the slow cooker last night. Peyton didn’t like it; Brandon loved it, and while I didn’t think Dave would like it (no salt), he dipped a spoon into my bowl and said he didn’t think it was too bad. (translation: he likes, he just doesn’t want to tell me “yum” 😉 That’s what I tell myself anyway.)
