Pixie Reveal and Band Concert!

I picked Brandon up from school only long enough to exchange his tshirt, music and clarinet, before taking Peyton to piano. She did better than last week, but she’s still pretty quiet. The new teacher focuses more on musicality, and fine-tuning the playing, which I don’t think Peyton has patience for. She’s learning. But slowly. She gets a little loosey goosey after 30 minutes. We headed back to school, and practice was to last until 4 pm, but as the kids were done, they were leaving. But since I was at piano, I asked Brandon to sit quietly and do his homework, while the band mom was overseeing the process. I touched base with her, but Brandon had his head down. He was working quietly, and he didn’t notice me for awhile. He finally popped his head up, and then he came over. As we headed to the car, he told me he thanked G for the pixie gifts. He came out and said it! I’d been trying to come up with a way to thank her mom all day long, and he just went up to her. Good for him! We headed home and the kids did the rest of their homework, and I fed them before Dave came home. We went back to school to drop Brandon off at the library. He was worried his clarinet was cold, and that it wouldn’t play well. He wanted to wet his reeds but I told him he had plenty of time. We took our seats, and then after some time, the kids filed in and started tuning. Peyton got bored with me, and she wanted to sit with Dave who was standing in the aisle. Soon, Daniel, her buddy, showed up, and they watched respectfully next to Dave. The beginning band started, then a bunch of solos and ensembles followed, Brandon included. Dave was filming from his vantage point, which was way better than where I was sitting. Brandon was tucked in the corner, behind the conductor.

After the intermediate band went, then the bands combined for a super band. After that, the kids were released. The whole concert was over in an hour. Most of them went to put their instruments away, while some went directly to get dessert. They were hoarding like it was going out of style! And no parents to be seen. I had Peyton get in line for Brandon, who came in running! This is why he does band! This is why he’s asked me to sign him up for the next round of drama. He had 48 hours to let me know, since sign ups are tomorrow morning. He had to check with his friend, Caleb, to see if he’d be doing it. I hadn’t even asked him again, but he told me, “I wanna do drama.” I asked him what percent effort he’d give me. He didn’t start off high. Like 20% effort. Dave’s birthday 

Dave’s birthdayStarted out as usual. Peyton went potty and ended up in our bed from Dave’s side. I ignored her until my alarm went off. When I moved, she whispered “Mommy”. I snoozed for nine more minutes before telling her it was time to get up. We got ready and did our usual routine. I left for work and did my thing. We walked at lunch and I checked email after. There was an email from the teacher that said after PE while they were heading back to the classroom, Peyton fell and hit her head on the concrete. She also cut her lip. I chalked it up to being clumsy. I called CDC to let them know since it was almost transition time. I went to pick her up expecting her to look hideous. She looked fine just a bit of a fat lip. I asked her what happened. She told me they were lined up after PE, and she felt dizzy. And “fell down”. She wasn’t moving. She just fell! So I got a bit more worried. The teacher was a bit concerned because she said she was shaking after the fall. But I figured that was from the shock and pain. Dave let us and took Brandon out of the room. The doctor checked her out, and all seemed well. She asked if I wanted labs and I said sure! But Peyton was not so sure. She didn’t cry. But was concerned. I distracted her with her on my lap, and only one phlebotomist was needed to do the work. A second one asked if he needed help, but the first guy called him off. She did great!! Brandon would’ve needed three guys! We met the boys outside then headed to Dave’s birthday dinner. We ate at two places for oysters and then sliders. We ended up home and then as Brandon was showering there was a doorbell ring!! We were confused because we already had been Pixied for the week. Dave was slow to answer, but by the time he did, only a single item remained on our doorstep. A UCLA jello mold. Our pixie knows us. All too well. Put it in my planner

I was telling Brandon there was no band next Tuesday. I wanted to verbalized it so I didn’t forget.  Dave chimed in, “Why would you tell him now?”   Brandon then said, “Just put it in my planner!”   I gave him a sticky note to put in his calendar for next week

The kids were eating their leftover lunch. Brandon told me, “The eggs smell like Vietnam.”   Well then, that was enough for me not to make him eat the eggs!!

Santa!!

I picked the kids up and went home to change clothes. The kids asked what we were doing. I told them we’re going to see Santa. Brandon freaked out, and cried out, “But wait! I don’t have my list yet!” So adorable, considering he was the biggest doubter a few months ago. He changed as requested, as did Peyton. I drove them up to “our fave”, and Dave was already in line. Michelle told me there was only one person in line yesterday, the day Dave didn’t want to go because he was afraid of lines and crowds. Santa was on a break until 6 pm, so he had to clear some of the line that had formed. We rushed ahead of one mom with her two young kids in tow. She had at least a 7 month old (because I asked), and maybe a three year old. While we were in line, the older kid of the two noticed my bag. It was like his mom’s! So, the next five minutes, the three kids were comparing their mom’s purses (hers was larger and navy blue). I asked Dave, “Is that the same santa?” Brandon said, “Of course it’s the same Santa! Why wouldn’t it be?” In the car, Peyton had wondered how Santa was at Disneyland, but then came back to the mall, and why there were different size elves. I told her he has a sleigh, and the elves are made like people – some are big, like people elves, and some are small, like the one on the shelf.

We were up next in line, and I considered letting the mom with the two younger kids go first, since there was no one else behind her. BUT, Dave declined. Good thing though, as we were stepping up, there was a family coming up to the reservation line. They deferred one round as they were awaiting another family. We went up to Santa, and the kids got situated on his lap. Brandon looks so huge now, as we’ve been back to the same set year after year. We took a few pictures with the kids alone, then we jumped in. Dave bought us UCLA beanies, so we all represented. I was embarrassed as we heard “Fight On” and “GO CAL!” from the peanut gallery behind us. They’re just haters since they didn’t have their gear represented. We had to struggle to get Peyton’s hat on, since she didn’t want to mess up her hair or be embarrassed, but we managed.

After we were done, the kids jumped off, ready to leave. But Santa called them back and said, “You didn’t even tell me what you wanted!” They had forgotten! Our Sunday

This morning, since the kids slept in a bit, they didn’t get up until after 730 pm because of the late night yesterday. Dave got us out of the house and into the gym for some basketball. Both kids need some practice. I was in there for a bit, too, shooting with them, and trying to do the drills Dave was asking of them. I dribbled with them, and even raced Peyton up the court. She almost beat me with our dominant hands. She wasn’t as good with her left. Then, I went to run a bit, while I left them in the gym with Dave. Brandon was sitting when I returned. I asked him why, and he said, “Because I’m sweaty!” Really??? He ended up getting up again, and shooting around some more. Then, we ended our time with a little 2 on 2, boys versus girls. Thanks to some Tsao boy turnovers, we were leading by 3-2. Then, Brandon tied it up with a bank shot. Dave called winner take it all by this time, and it was a back and forth with the turnovers, before I was able to sink the winning shot! Peyton was super excited 🙂
We all showered up before heading to eat breakfast. When we came home, it was nap time, since Peyton had her first piano party. We’d been practicing for this, as she had a bit of a melt down on Thursday over it at her practice. I put high stakes on the line including no sleepover party as well as not planning her own birthday. She woke up a bit cranky, but I got her to get out of the house. We arrived 10 minutes early so she could get a feel of the other piano (this is the grand piano in the main part of the house). She did her thing, and at that point, I was going to leave. Three brothers came in; one older, and a set of twins. They were all the same height and looked like triplets! They were introduced to Peyton, and each extended a hand to shake hers without prompting! They were very polite, with the twins at 10 maybe, and the older one at 12. I left the four of them there, and I headed to get groceries for the week. I only had an hour, so I went home, dropped off the food, and returned to get her. The teacher filled me in that she did a great job. She was still a bit shy, but she did what she was asked. She was enjoying her treats, and I was able to meet the girls she attached herself to, an eight year old and a ten year old, who told Peyton she was tall! His boys go to the neighboring school and middle school. With another handful of popcorn, Peyton happily left with me. Elf on the shelf 

Peyton looks forward to seeing elf each morning!  Though this morning, I’d forgotten to move him.  She was headed down the stairs when I told her to stop because Dave had something to say to her.
