Why Should I Help?

Dave had the kids on his own tonight since I had class. Both kids were bathed before I left at 6pm. Dave was recapping to me what happened tonight. Brandon was being asked to put his towel up, then started getting snippy and went back to his room to read. Birthday Dinner

Tonight, we got together for an early dinner to celebrate my birthday. It was great to coordinate 5 families/couples and all the kids. There were 10 adults, 9 kids in attendance. Here’s a picture of the kids minus the twins who were in their stroller: Ted is the only one looking and smiling!  Just getting everyone together is a success, and I could stop right there and that’d be a good story 🙂 But as they all know, that’s not my style.
So we got seated, and the table arrangement was dictated first by Mckayla and Peyton “needing” to sit together, and then we all arranged around that. Of course, it was my pleasure to accommodate the request because both girls enjoy each other’s company. I was seated across the table (a very long table) from Ashlyn, who sat with her parents, and Theresa and Martin, then the Brown’s sat across from Dave and half the Kao’s.  The kids were all set up then we proceeded to order.  Dave took the reins and started the list.  We got a good assortment of food from salads, pastas and entrees.  The adults were able to catch up regionally, as we all had stations to man.  After dinner, while the plates were being cleared, the kids mingled a bit, and swapped places. Peyton told me she had to go potty, as is her usual practice during dinner.  In the bathroom, she told me that Mckayla told her she could watch TV after they were done.  Later, I found out Peyton asked for the phone.  Peyton looks up to Mckayla, as she refused hand sanitizer from Michelle, but took some from Mckayla before dinner.  She was very generous with her HK stickers, too, as she shared that with Peyton in the beginning.  After her return from the restroom, the girls squeezed together to watch the phone. After his 5th round or so of food,  Brandon went to go watch what Peyton and Mckayla were watching. At one point, Dave scolded Peyton for touching Michelle’s phone, which she was not supposed to do.  She threw a fit and buried her face under the table in tears.  She wasn’t stopping, so Dave sent her over to me.  I wasn’t sure what I was to do about it, but she just buried her head into me.  It was at this time that the wait staff came over and brought a huge piece of chocolate cake (that I’ve been thinking about ever since we talked about picking the restaurant!) They started singing their peppy birthday song, and all the attention was on us.  Peyton did not surface, and I covered her head up so she wouldn’t hear all the noise.  She was still trying to recover.  Soon, Mckayla was very sweet and invited her back to sit with her.  With that, and the ice cream that was sitting at the table, Peyton agreed.  She cleaned up nicely, and then was back to her old self with Mckayla’s encouragement.  After eating a few bites of his ice cream, Connor was in the mix. He came over to the big kids, then before we could get a picture, he ducked back around the table.  I invited him to take Peyton’s look and find book, and I started asking him where things were.  I had some cake left to finish, but since I rarely get to interact with Connor, I wanted to take the opportunity.  He was totally engaged in looking for the objects, and when he couldn’t find it, he’d raise his hands up in the air.  Brandon had come back, and he was helping Connor, too.  Brandon wasn’t giving him as much a chance to find things, as he’d point out the objects right away.  Connor flipped through the pages on his own, and Brandon was trying to help him find things.  After everyone had finished their desserts, it was time to wrap up and go.  I didn’t have my phone or watch, but Michelle told me it was 715pm.  Wow!  That was great time.  The kids had already taken a bath after the fun run, so we just needed to get them home and brush their teeth.  I told Brandon he had one less tooth to brush, and that he could spend more time brushing the ones he had left.  I thanked everyone for coming, and got a special hug from Ashlyn.  We went outside to take a picture of all the kids.  Martin helped us do that, while the parents tried to corral all the kids around the twins.  We hadn’t gotten them in a full picture yet, so it was our chance.  We all said our goodbyes and headed in separate directions.  While we were driving home, Brandon said he was tired and was going to sleep.Peyton said she was tired, too.  I didn’t believe Peyton so much since she’d napped, but I could believe Brandon was tired, as he was looking pretty sleepy after he ate all that food. Dave had pleaded with him not to eat so much and throw up.  Dave turned the radio up to have them stay awake.  They were annoyed with us for interrupting their sleep, but we still had to get them home and brush their teeth.  When we got home, neither wanted to get out, but Dave threatened to leave Brandon in the car.  That got him moving, and thus Peyton as well.  We brushed, changed, and got them in bed by 755pm. It’s 845pm, and neither has come out of his/her room.  We ran that kid ragged this morning, and without a nap, he was TIRED.  Maybe we should do that all the time to keep the bedtime routine easy peasy!  I’d already set all their clothes out before leaving for the restaurant, so we were good to go for tomorrow.  Thank you for all that came out.  It makes turning another year easier 🙂

Here’s a picture I took while we were getting getting set up:

Fun Run

This is our second annual Fun Run and our school’s 7th.  The check-in time was 7:30 am, but as we learned last year, since we were already registered, we didn’t really need to get there that early.  So we arrived around 8am, and they were just starting the warm-ups.  We took our family picture, and then headed to get coffee.  We brought the stroller since we made the decision to all run the 5K (3.1 miles).  We were going to have Peyton run the last bit of the way so we could finish together.  I told Brandon he’d start with a green card, and if he ended up on green, he could enjoy the food at the end and have “whatever he wanted”.  We saw the mascot from our local hockey team (too bad about the lockout, but I guess that meant he’s free for things like this), and then we started the race.  Dave had to push Peyton in the stroller across the grass field, and even then Brandon wanted to walk. I told him to just run so we could get off the wet grass, but he was already complaining.  Then, when we were on the street, he complained some more.  He got down to a yellow by then, as he was trying to pull my arm down, or hold on to the stroller.  It took him about a mile in to have him stop whining.  He kept asking me how many miles left.  I randomly counted down mileage, as there were no mile markers to check me.  Luckily, he believed me and that motivated him.  He hit his stride and got back to green, as he was running ahead of me.  Dave wanted me to pace him and I reminded him of the tortoise and the hare.  He asked me, “How do YOU know about that story?”  He learned about it at school, and he thought he was the only one.  He was acting like the hare, and I told him to pace himself.  He slowed down a bit, then we hit the water station.  We found some other first graders, that were in CDC and also t-ball.  They were a set of twins running with another kid and his dad.  They were all blond and then there was Brandon.  It was great motivation for him, since the boys were all competing with each other, trying to outrun one another.  I stayed with them and the dad while Dave ran ahead to get a head start for Peyton.  While the dad, his son and one twin were up ahead, Brandon, the other twin, and I were running behind.  Soon, Carter got his feet tangled up, and ran aground.  He paused a bit, then saw blood and started wailing.  I stopped with him, and called for Dave who had water in the stroller.  Dave turned around, then kept running.  Thanks, dude! I didn’t have any bandages or water, and I couldn’t convince Carter he was okay.  Luckily, Tyler’s dad came back, and picked him up, something I couldn’t do, as this kid was almost Brandon’s size!  He calmed Carter down, made him laugh, and then he caught up with the other three boys that I was running with by then.  We had to monitor the street crossings since there weren’t as many monitors as last year, and cars were trying to sneak by.  We passed the 2K finish, and had to do “another small loop”.  The boys were so disheartened to see the finish line, but knowing we were finishing the 5K, we had to keep going.  They groaned for a second, then caught another wind, and started sprinting again.  Since they knew they’d passed the 2K, Brandon and the boys were talking big.  Brandon said, “The 2K is boring,” while the other boy agreed, “Yeah, I know.  We’re doing the 5K.”  So, the boys were taking turns motivating, and then complaining, and then finally, we saw the final stretch.  The boys had stopped for water, and poured water over their heads, cooling them off.

Peyton got out of the stroller, and I ran with her.  She was ahead of the boys, and I didn’t want her to fall down, since I’d end up dragging her since we were holding hands, so I tried to keep her pace and keep her from falling.  She kept up, and at one point was in front of Brandon, which he could have none of, and sprinted past her.  We made it with the clock saying “40” (minutes) and that’s better than I’d thought.  I thought we’d be “running” a 20 minute/mile pace, but it seems we were at a 12’52” per mile.  We may have run even faster, but we’d stopped for Carter.  One of these years, maybe we can run independently, and the kids can run on their own with their friends as we’d seen some families. After we crossed the finish line, we headed to the food. The kids were served fruit, and a small piece of bundt cake, and a piece of coffee cake.  We made good on our promise to Brandon, and he got to return for seconds and received another helping of bundt and coffee cakes.  We waited around for the raffle, and Dave complained how he never wins anything.  We enjoyed listening to the music, and Peyton gave us her rendition of “Oppa Gangnam” style as well as “Call Me, Maybe”.  😉

We got home and both kids took their baths, since they were sweaty.  Dave took off for a bike ride, while Peyton’s watching Pooh that I’d DVR’d recently.  We discovered “NO” written in pencil on the wall, and Brandon earned himself 50 sentences.  Luckily it was in pencil, and he had the pleasure of erasing it, then writing his sentences.  I figured we’d made it this far without anyone writing on the walls, I thought we’d be in the clear, but Brandon said he did it when he was mad at us.  Two steps forward, one step back.  (Sigh)

Lovin’ Her Room

This morning, I was doing laundry after coming back from my run. The kids had both been playing together, then suddenly, I didn’t see Peyton in Brandon’s room. Because…; Pacing

While we were getting the kids to bed, I reminded Peyton she needed a good night’s sleep for the Fun Run tomorrow. I asked her if she wanted to run with Mommy or Daddy. (Peyton will run 2K and Brandon will attempt 5K). She said, “Mommy!” I asked her why (since I wanted to run the 5K). She replied, “Because I LOVE Mommy!” I guess I may get a break tomorrow. We won’t bring the stroller, so she’ll have to do it on her own. I hope Brandon can make it! He keeps asking how long it will take him. I told him it won’t take him that long if he’s fast 😉

On Friday, when we went to pick Peyton up, I wanted Brandon to show his favorite pre-school teacher his report for the week. He got TWO blues, and two greens (he wasn’t in school on Monday). He didn’t want to at first, but after convincing him, he put the sheet in his pocket. He said, “I don’t want anyone else to see it!” She was still on her lunch, so we waited outside her room to come back before getting Peyton. The other teacher told us she’d be back within a few minutes. One of the administrators came by and said hi to Brandon. Brandon was pacing back and forth, and Mr Tuan asked him if he was okay. He looked down, and said, “First grade.” I think he was pre-emptively answering what he thought he was going to ask. Mr Tuan said, “I know what grade you’re in, are you okay?” Brandon nodded quietly, then put his head down. Mr Tuan kept walking, and soon Ms Tarez showed up. I told Brandon to take out what he’d brought, and he reluctantly did so. She congratulated him, gave him a big hug, and talked again how we’d talk and arrange for her to take him to BR for some ice cream! He kept smiling, and told her about his week. After we chatted for a few minutes, we headed off to pick up Peyton. I secretly thanked her again; she has always been very supportive of Brandon, and been very encouraging to him. He looks forward to his weekly visits with her, even though he gets shy about his achievements.

Fall Festival

Today was the second annual fall festival at work. We went to swimming as usual. Coach Rob told us, “She pushed my hand away for her back float so she could do it herself!” Back floats.  I told him she’s pretty independent, and he said, “I’m learning that quickly!”  They also worked on holding their breath under water. Peyton enjoys dunking herself and doing head bobs.  She’ll stay under there for awhile, while the other boy will go down, then pop up immediately.  So, Rob was trying to go from 3 seconds to 5 seconds and longer.  Over the summer, Peyton held her breath longer than Brandon, mostly due to Brandon giggling and having to come up for air.  We showered the kids up there, then headed over early. We were about 30 minutes early, but since it looked like things were set up, we started our journey through the booths. We did a little back and forth as we had to check in first before going to get our flu shots. Peyton was a bit whiny, and even before we got there, she was complaining about not wanting to get shot. I thought she said she didn’t want to SHOP, but she clarified SHOT. Brandon had already got the nasal shot the last time Dave took him in, but he was not without whining himself. He said, “I don’t want to go and see her get a shot!” Dave took Peyton, while I faced her and got my own. I told her to be a big girl, and no tears! The shot went in, and she had no reaction, then the tears started, but she hid her face in her arm, wanting to be strong and not show tears. She did sob, with lots of tears, and I took her while Dave got his shot done. Last year, there were juice bars right away, which is what we were trying to bribe her with, but this year, we had to wait a bit. We went back to the lobby, then suddenly, someone tapped Brandon on the shoulder. It was Ian!! Kira was there with two dum-dums, and she handed one to Peyton. Both girls are so quiet in public, but Peyton said a very quiet Thank you to her. Kathy’s whole family was waiting in the lobby (minus Jeff and Kaia) for her to register first. When she came back, they were headed to get shots, while we were headed to lunch. We’d seen The Brown’s when we had first gone in to register. It had taken us some time to get back out there, since the line for flu shots had grown from when we’d first come in. At one point, I saw Bonnie and Connor while I was getting our food, but they were walking away from us. We went to get our food and find a spot in the shade. We didn’t bring a stroller, so we had the kids walking on their own in the open area. I was carrying stuff, so I turned to find Peyton and saw this:
It was pretty warm today! Then Mckayla spotted Peyton and went up to say hello. We told them to come find us to eat lunch once they got theirs. Soon enough, Mckayla came back and wanted to sit next to Peyton. The kids ate their lunches, and then Brandon finished half his lunch first, and had his fruit bar. Peyton was still working on her meat, and when she was finished, I told her to wait for Mckayla to finish up. When she was done, both girls got their bars, then headed different directions. Brandon wanted to play some games.  Dave was getting antsy since he had 3 games to watch on TV, even though they were DVR’d, he doesn’t usually like watching recorded sports stuff.  We ran into Mckayla again at the seed planting area.  She was gluing calendula seeds.  Peyton was carefully watching Mckayla, and after she was done, I asked Peyton if she wanted to do it.  She nodded and said she wanted to do it.  She had a choice of the calendula flower, radish or spinach.  I convinced her to do spinach, so we could eat it later. She doesn’t like radishes, or at least I don’t think she does.   I helped her glue four spots on a square of newspaper.  She then picked up each seed, and placed them carefully on the glue areas.  She was then given a stick, and a crayon, and the volunteer asked her to write spinach.  She’d just watched Mckayla write, so she was determined, too.  The lady wasn’t sure if Peyton could write, but Peyton picked up the crayon and went to work.  Here’s what she wrote:

Shuttle Sighting; Reading

Today was a pretty momentous event.  The shuttle was being flown from Up North to Down South.  I wasn’t planning on watching it, but I’d heard about it on the radio.  I took Brandon to school, then dropped Peyton off at school for picture day.  I went to an appointment, then headed home.  I stayed here for a few minutes, then headed out to the gym.  I had planned to go straight to the gym from the appointment, but I had to bring something back home for refrigeration first.  If not for that, I would have missed this!

And this to show the kids if they didn’t get to see it live 🙂

I figured I’d stand there at my car and watch, too.  Since the employees were out, I figured it would be soon, since they can’t afford to just all be out there for a prolonged period of time.  And good thing I didn’t have anywhere to be right away.  Within 5 minutes, I saw the first plane, then the shuttle!  Amazing.  I texted Dave immediately, and he was watching, too.  He hoped that the kids would be able to watch it, too.  He was going to gauge the quality of the school based on if the kid got to see it.  Then, I couldn’t wait to go pick them up and see.  So, I did my mileage, went home and cleaned up.  I even took a nap, then went to get Brandon from garden club. I tried to sneak up on him like last time, but this time he knew my hiding place.  It didn’t distract him too much, as he was just wrapping up.  While we were walking back to the car, he said, “Um, I saw that space shuttle thing today. It was so loud.  They kept changing the time.  I wish they had the Legos in it.”  The entire school was out there looking for it.  I proudly told Dave that Brandon got to see it, whether he knew the importance or not.  So we had some space talk in the car ride to get Peyton.  He wanted to know how it gets up there, how far away Pluto is, how hot Mercury is, and we also discussed gravity and its effects on us.  It was pretty fun and he was definitely asking me questions I couldn’t answer.  I told them we could look them up later.

He also brought home his reading test/placement.  The test indicates he is reading at the 2.5 grade level. That corresponds to what a typical 2nd grader reads after the 5th month of school.  He is also in the 93 percentile of all 1st grade readers nationally.  When I told him of his results, he said, “It must be because of all the reading you made me do over the summer.”  He did tell me he loves to read.

He starts his timed math tests in October.  He wanted me to help him practice but I told him to ask Dave to help him, since I’d monitored the rest of his homework packet this afternoon.  He told me, “But Daddy isn’t good at math! I don’t want him to watch me.”  Haha…the facts he’s trying to learn are “1+3” and “4+1” and sums to 5 to start.  There are 40 facts he has to get right in 3 minutes, then he will pass that level and it becomes harder.  Hopefully Dave can convince him that he DOES know math, so I’m not the only one working with him all the time.  While Brandon was working on his homework packet, Peyton read through her Bob books, and started on her new set.  She gets so excited when she finishes them, and says, “THE END” so emphatically and with a smile.
