Though the kids stayed up until 10 pm yesterday, they were both up about their usual time, only my mom had told them to stay in bed until 7 am. I didn’t officially get up until 8 am, and they were already fed by then. I supposed they didn’t get up until 7 am, but I didn’t ask. We hung around here in the morning, then my mom left to do her errands for the day. We decided to head out ourselves. That brought Dave over the hill to his favorite coffee shop. We stopped by downtown SC for a cup, then headed a few streets over to park. We browsed through a street fair, then headed to the water. There was a bike race in town, so we got to see a little bit of that. It was a circuit race, so the same cyclists were going round and round. I was a bit nervous that one of them would crash and we’d be right in the way, since where we stopped, we were at a turn. I guess it’s all the Tour de Frances I’ve watched over the years and the crashes I’ve seen that can be gruesome. So, we positioned ourselves behind the poles with the gym pads strapped to them, seemingly like a good area, though no so much if they had to pad the street poles. Peyton was whining as usual, and I had the “pleasure” of dragging her around. I was happy that I never had to pick her up, as I was holding coffee in one hand, while hers in my other. We made it to the boardwalk area, and we walked up and down. The rides cannot compare to dland, and I convinced the kids that we could save our money for dland our next trip there. We did let them play one game, like the one they played at Dave and Busters, rolling the ball up the chute to advance the race car. It was just the two of them playing, so we had a guaranteed prize – Tuxedo Sam! Brandon started out with two balls, so Dave quickly took one away to make it fair. Even without the second ball, he clearly had a lead over Peyton. When the buzzer went off, we told both kids good game, and the attendant handed Brandon the penguin. Peyton got her pouty face on, and before I could explain to her that there are sometimes winners and sometimes losers, Brandon handed her the penguin. So much for rivalry! He was so sweet to her. I gave him a big hug for him doing that, and he brushed it off like it was no big deal. She thanked him, and then carried it the rest of the walk. We left shortly after that, and headed in search of food. Peyton was dragging now, and I tempted her to walk so she could get lunch. I told her there was no car, and that she had to keep up. We made it back to the Mexican restaurant we ate at last time we were in town. The kids shared a fish quesadilla, while I had a taco salad, and Dave a burrito. The walk was short back to the car, and Peyton made it without any problems. We then drove out to the local ice cream store on our way back home. Both kids were happy to choose the no sugar, lower fat version of mint chip, while Dave got a caramel-based ice cream, and I got a mud pie scoop. The kids fell asleep on the way home, and we stopped to get some plants for the garden. I stayed in the car with them, while Dave selected two sweet pepper plants to go along with the tomatoes we got at the farmers market yesterday. We’re going to try our luck with tomatoes yet again this year. We headed home, and both kids were up by then. Peyton was talking in her sleep, saying, something about “Not yet, I’m not finished,” before fully waking herself up, asking for water. After we got home, Dave dropped us off to go get some more lumber for the bench, to go along with the table her previously made. He was gone so long, the kids finished the Lion King that was on. After it was over, we turned off the TV, and each kid had a set of Legos to put together. Brandon said he’d open the ones that I got him. Peyton corrected him, and said, “You mean the ones I got you!” She put the set together that we got her for her birthday. She started out strong, not wanting me to help her at all. I played my own games, and only checked in with her when she got stuck. Later, I could tell she was really tired, as she wasn’t thinking about it at all, and at one point was lying down. I suggested putting it away for later, and she had a fit. She was crying, and I told her she had to calm down before I could help her. She was in my lap, and then got up. I asked her where she was going. She said, “To get a tissue to wipe my tears.” She had stopped crying by then, and I guess she wanted to keep going. By this time, Dave had come back, started on some sawing, then came in for dinner. We fed the kids quickly, then it was off to bath and bed. Neither complained, as both were probably tired. I think we maybe walked about 2 miles total today, so we’re going to have to condition Peyton more! Here are the pictures from today:
