Running Club

Last night at the PTA meeting, the members were asked to vote on a mini grant for physical education that was started by one of the teachers. Apparently, it’s already been going on for 3 weeks, but kids signed up and run laps during their 20-minute recess. Brandon had mentioned how he, Carter and Wyatt “run around in circles” at recess. I had a picture that they were like dogs, running around chasing their tails. The teacher had assigned them lap cards, so that the kids could keep track of how many laps they did. Apparently, 336 kids signed up, and over 500+ miles had been run thus far. I was excited to hear about it, and fortunately, the grant was approved by the PTA. This morning, I asked Brandon about it, since by the time I got home yesterday, the kids were sleeping already. Brandon told me, “Yes, I’m in running club.” I asked him how many laps he ran. He said, “Nine.” Each walk-a-thon lap is 0.25 miles, so if it’s anything like that, then he ran a little over 2 miles. In 20 minutes! I told him I thought that was pretty fast. Then, I asked if he was running with his friends. He said, “Oh, no, I don’t run with them; I’m faster than Wyatt, so I run ahead of him. But I’m not as fast as Carter.” I told Brandon that he was going to be faster than me really soon!

Child Labor

We bought some green beans over the weekend at the Farmer’s Market, and Dave involved Peyton in preparing them by having her take the ends off. The family polished off the whole bag in one day, and so we had French beans the next night. Peyton was happy to clip the ends off this bag, too, but since the bag was so big, I helped her. She’s already starting to do her part in the kitchen. Singing

I walked into the classroom to pick Peyton up, and the kids were all sitting on the carpet learning a song for the Winter Sing. Peyton didn’t notice me, and none of the kids did either otherwise they would tell her right away that I was there. Not more than 2 seconds that I was watching did I hear her shout, “That’s not how you sing it! You said ‘____’, but the word is ‘____.'” Since she was turned around to the person behind her, she caught a glimpse of me, and stood up to walk over to me. Email from the Teacher

Dave and I got an email from our teacher today in the middle of the day. The subject line was “Confidential”.  I didn’t want to open it!  It didn’t sound good.  As I read further it went on to say, “We will recognize Brandon for the character trait of Friendship on Friday, 11/22/13 at the flag assembly.  Please plan on being there and cheer for him, also please keep it as a surprise for him”

Sheldon

Peyton is very particular, much like a character in the sitcom that Dave and I have been watching, Big Bang Theory. He is particular about a certain spot on the couch, and everyone else is discouraged from sitting there. While Peyton isn’t *that* bad, she does have her moments. Every day, she chooses her chair for breakfast by standing in front of it, then I put her jacket/sweatshirt on the back of the chair while she sits down. She picks the middle seat, facing the rest of the classroom. If there are a bunch of kids there already, she’s cool about it, and will just sit at an open spot. Then, I never know where she will go. Today, one of the elementary kids, a sister of one of her friends, was sitting down at the breakfast table. She walked over to the other side, at the opposite seat from her, and sat down. As I bent down to put her sweatshirt on the back, she whispered in my ear, “Mia’s sitting in my spot.” I had to bite my tongue to keep from laughing because it was SO “Sheldon-esque”, but I did tell her the chair she picked was equally good.
Earlier in the morning, I was reminding Brandon of something that happened at “the coffee shop.” Peyton said, “It wasn’t a coffee shop. It was Peet’s. AND… they serve tea, too.”

First Tourney

Today was Brandon’s first chess tournament outside of school. I signed him up, and he was agreeable to it. He’s such an easy-going kid sometimes, down for whatever. It started at 9 am with registration. Dave took Brandon, while I took Peyton since we had our own way to go in the middle of the day. Luckily, Dave took Brandon, since we got a bit lost, going to the convention center, then the wrong hotel. Brandon didn’t start until 9 am, so we hung around waiting for the start time. After everyone had registered, they posted the pairings. It’s a bit nerve-wracking (for the parents), since all the kids are in one small meeting room of the hotel. The parents eagerly await their children’s exit from the tournament. Every time the door opens you hope to NOT see your child. Brandon came out about 9:20 am or so, and he wasn’t the first out. He didn’t win, but he still had a smile on his face. There were 5 rounds total, with each round starting 1.5 hours from the previous one. We all went to breakfast between the first and second round, then we waited for him to finish the second before Peyton and I went to Kavya’s birthday party. He didn’t win the second either, but he didn’t mind. He was lasting longer with each round, so that was promising. Peyton and I went to a gym close by to the tournament. I talked to her about being a big girl, and saying “Happy Birthday” to Kavya, and giving her the present. I reviewed how I was going to stay, and that she should enjoy herself on the structures. She was hesitant at first, then found a mentor in Kavya’s older cousin, Tina. Tina was very gracious, too, as she really helped Peyton feel comfortable and took her under her wing. Peyton followed Tina everywhere! After about an hour of jumping around, we moved upstairs for pizza. The hosts took care of all the entertainment of the kids as well as serving pizza and cake. Peyton drink juice, but had herself some cake. She told me she’d take the frosting off herself, which she mostly did. She did want juice, but then when Iris said she wanted some, Peyton pushed hers to her and said, “Here, Iris.” I later asked Peyton how she knew her, other than her nametag, and she said, “From the Halloween party! She was watching the movie Oogie Boogie (The Nightmare Before Christmas) with us, and Kavya’s dad told me her name.” Peyton was really nice to her, and it was really cute to see. After cake, we said “Thank you” and “Goodbye” (Yes, even Peyton!) to Kavya, her mom and dad, then we headed back to the tournament. Dave and I tag-teamed out before the fourth round, as he went up to work. Peyton was happy to do her workbook, making her way through the first grade book now. Brandon was happy to play the ipad when he wasn’t in the tournament. By now, he’d asked to eat lunch, so he scarfed down the sandwich before his last round. Dave made it back by the end of the tournament, as Brandon had to wait to play his final opponent. He won his last match, with a checkmate! I’m glad he finished strong. He was happy, of course, and we went to eat dinner.  Peyton was so tired, she was falling asleep between the hotel and the square.  We went to the food court square downtown, so we had plenty to choose from for food. Dave was getting Brandon pizza, but I told Peyton since we’d both had pizza for lunch, we had to have something else. She suggested, “Why don’t we have a salad?” I told her that was a good idea. She chose a Caesar, while I chose a roasted root vegetable salad. She doesn’t like the dressing, so she had hers plain.  To keep her up on the ride home, we were listening to Josh Groban.  I asked her if they sang “The First Noel” at Bethlehem last year.  She told me, “No, they sang, ‘Fall on your knees, and hear the…'”  I couldn’t think of the name fo the song, but later, I googled it and found out it was “O Holy Night,” and realized she was right!  She totally paid attention last year, and is looking forward to next year.  We came home by 615 pm, and both kids were in bed by 645 pm. Brandon enjoyed an ice pop since Peyton had cake at the birthday party, and he’d not had any sweets today.

Here are some pictures I took of Brandon awaiting his matches, and Peyton at the party. Video of the gym party (where Peyton NOW wants her party to be…)

Salute

Somehow the kids took away with the military salute from last Monday’s Veteran’s day program. Theirs is “Over 10-hut!” and then they salute. Today was a Good Day

We started out by dropping Peyton off, then Brandon at flag salute. I was reading in the classroom again today, and I have most of the kids’ names down. In fact, I saw one of the girls at line up time, and I asked her how she was doing. She said, “I’m doing well; how is Brandon’s sister? She’s so cute!” I had an hour break before heading back into the classroom. We had a good discussion about our book, and the time flew by! It was a short book, so I thought that I’d have to fill in a lot of time, but I ended up taking the whole 30 minutes to review the book and do the activity after. Brandon raised his hand today, and I was sure to call on him, since he said I didn’t call on him last time. A lot of the kids were happy to share with me today, so I didn’t have to fish for answers. I kissed Brandon goodbye and wished him good luck on his chess tournament today. I also reminded him to go to CDC in case I didn’t make it back from my visits later in the afternoon. The kids were on their way out while I was returning my materials. A few of the girls called out, “Mrs Mah!” I turned, and all they wanted to say was, “Bye!” I waved goodbye to them, then I headed home. My plans today were to meet Baby Madeline. She’s 7 weeks old, and Laurie and her parents were staying in a hotel nearby where we grew up. I had to make a stop to buy a birthday present, then met up with the Campbell’s at Starbucks. We hung out a little bit, then headed back to the hotel. The baby was asleep much of the time, but did get up to eat. I got to hold her, and it’s like riding a bike. Normally, I don’t like holding little babies, except for my own, but she was easy. Laurie describes her similarly to Brandon; fidgety, likes to be held, and has a witching hour from 5-8 pm. When I had her, she fussed a little bit, then we got comfy with one another while Alexa and Laurie ate lunch. She ended up falling asleep with me, twice! I tried to put her down, and she woke up (like Brandon), so I picked her up and started over again. After we visited for awhile, Laurie had to go to another friend’s, so I headed back to pick up Peyton, then Brandon. I am glad that Peyton didn’t go, as she would have been jealous. Brandon almost got his wish, to stay at CDC until 5 pm. It was 445 pm, and he was able to rainbow loom this afternoon. More importantly, he was proud to show me his trophy and medal that he was wearing around his neck. He took 10th place and got a trophy (there were only 10 trophies given out), and he got the medal for 2 checkmates. Apparently, the trophies are given out in order that the checkmates are done. So, he was the 10th kid to get a checkmate. Last session, he got 3rd. He was so excited to show me, and I reminded him of his tourney on Sunday. He said, “I can’t wait to go to my tournament!” He was lukewarm about the idea when I’d first signed him up, so I was glad he was more into it. We got home, and he showed me even more good news! His report card came back. With the common core standards now in place, the rubric has changed. The rubric is now from 1-5, with 3-5 being different levels of proficient. The principal tried to convince parents that a “3” was still good, that the child understood the material, and shouldn’t be equivalent to a “C”, but I don’t think parents were seeing it that way. The teachers teach to a “5” and only the material taught is scored, so they aren’t grading to what should be achieved by the end of the year. In any case, Brandon is doing great! He received 5’s (advanced proficiency) in all areas tested thus far: Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Number and Operations in Base Ten, Measurement and Data, Mathematical Practices, Reading – Literature, Reading – Informational Text, Reading Skills – Phonics and Fluency Writing, Speaking and Listening, Geography, Life Science, PE (Motor Skills, Sportsmanship), Visual and Performing Arts – Participation, and all of his lifelong learning skills – Follows school and classroom expectations, respects people and property, consistently completes and returns assignments, contributes collaboratively, and organizes self and materials. He received a 513 on his math level, which according to the range for the beginning of the 2nd grade, should be between 394-515. I think he was most excited about his perfect attendance that he got, which he put on his backpack. It’s a little zipper pull thing. Great job, Brandon!

Now, all of us are watching the UCLA football game on tv. Brandon was so excited about it, that he showered right after coming home so he would be able to watch with Daddy.  He even told Dave he wanted to play football when he was older.

A-ha!

Peyton has been coming out of her room and sneaking into Brandon’s for the past week or so. She had complained of being cold, so I put more blankets on her. But that didn’t change anything. So we broke out the baby gate. We never really used it with either kid, since Brandon tried to hulk over it when we used it in the condo to keep him out of our kitchen. He grabbed the top with both hands and tried to scale it, despite it being a solid piece of plexiglass. We couldn’t use it on our stairs, since it wasn’t sturdy enough, but we never threw it out since it was in good condition. So, we put Peyton in her room, and then put the door in front of it. If she has to go potty after bedtime, then she needs to ask to get carried over the door. It seemed to have worked, and then Dave removes it before he goes to bed so it’s not a fire hazard, and she can get out in the morning to pee. She’s had her “daycare” cough since the weekend, at least, and one night, I couldn’t sleep because I kept hearing her cough and knew she was awake. I went to her room with my big down comforter, and tried to get her to sleep upright against me. Laying down always makes coughing worse. I’d already given her honey and water, but the cough was still there. Nighttime is always the worst for a cough, and this was no different. She was so tired, but still awake because of the cough. She just flopped against me, and cuddled up, but would awaken every time she coughed. Her eyes looked so tired, and she even told me, “Good night,” after I gave her the water. We finally both fell asleep, until I woke up. She was smiling because I was there, and I asked her what time it was (I didn’t have my glasses on). She told me it was 645 am, so I told her it was time to get up. I left my comforter there that day, and into the next night. She went to sleep and stayed in her own room all night long again. Dave figured out that it was the comforter that kept her there! She was nice and toasty and didn’t have to seek warmth in Brandon’s room. We still have to door up to re-train her, which she fights every time she sees it, but then gets over it. It’s funny to see her stand right by the door and ask to be let out, like a dog who needs a potty break. We’re resisting turning a heater on, since it’s not that cold, but the morning does get chilly. Luckily, my mom gave us her comforter, so we have an extra to replace the one that is now in Peyton’s room. She’s got more than enough comforter now, as that one is a king size! I also think she likes it because it’s purple.
