Play Date!

Today was Brandon’s evaluations for Farm Little League.  But first, Dave took off this morning to go coffee-tasting, while I took a tour of our city doing errands with the kids.  First, we gassed up and went on a Costco run.  There was no one in line for gas, but there were tons of people at the check out line, since all those that entered at 10 am – opening time – all decided to check out at the same time.  We then headed to Target for Brandon to spend his money from my uncle.  He had $25 to spend, but I told him it was after tax.  So, effectively, he had $23 to spend.  He chose two pokemon card decks and a mini-figure, and spent $24.93 after tax!  He was so excited to get the most out of what he had to spend.  We made a brief stop at home to deliver the milk to the refrigerator, but the kids stayed in the car while I did that.  Then, we headed to Toys R Us to spend the $3 that each kid got for the their birthdays there.  We saw Joshua and his mom in line at TRU while we were headed in and quickly said hi as they were in line to pay already. They weren’t allowed to buy mini figures there, which we’d done in the past, so I convinced them to buy a book, which I was willing to spend extra for.  Both chose reasonable books – Peyton, a sticker and activity book and Brandon a Pokemon encyclopedia. Both will keep them busy!  Then we headed to TJ’s and saw Josh and his mom again!  They were ahead of us at each step, as they were just leaving while we were on our way in.  We also ran into Bella’s mom, and Brandon said  hi to her.  She mentioned we see each other everywhere, as we will tomorrow at practice.  We did our errands, then it was time to go home.  Three hours had passed since we first headed out to Costco!  Good thing the kids were on board with all we had to do.  Dave was home already, and he rushed Brandon out the door with lunch in hand.  Dave had to prove the kids’ birthdays for their respective baseball teams.  Peyton and I had lunch at home, then we walked over after she was done.  Brandon did a great job at try-outs. It’s really nerve-wracking to be out there, solo, batting, then fielding at shortstop, then over at first base.  The final eval was for pitching.  He threw a strike on his first ball, and the second hit the plate, but it was straight!  We met up with the twins’ mom after, and also coach Tom.  The twins did a great job, and I think they had the coaches buzzing.  Their mom was concerned and wanted to get them on the same team as they’d been in the past, but it may not be possible, since they’re both good!  The boys converged with Peyton on the monkey bars, and their mom mentioned we should have a play date soon.  We said that was a good idea, as both kids had RC cars for Christmas.  Then, the mom suggested that we meet at school.  Then, she said she’d take Brandon straight from the park, and then drop him off later!  Peyton had a meltdown, as she watched her brother take off in someone else’s car.  So sad to hear her say, “Brother!  Brother!” like he was being hauled away in a police car or something.  Brandon grabbed his pokemon cards that he had in Dave’s car, the ones he’d just gotten today, and didn’t look back!  He was so excited. I think this is his first play date, and I hope he behaves himself so that he may have others.  The mom was excited to watch the boys grow up together, especially with the sports.  We played their basketball team yesterday, and Carter made it known to Brandon, “Our team was just a little bit better than yours.”  They light a fire under Brandon that I hadn’t seen before. He ran hard yesterday because he was guarding Carter, and he didn’t want him to get by him.  We’ll have to keep Brandon interested in the game, so that they will all continue to make themselves better.

Catch

Today, after our Red Egg party, we came home and walked to the park. We had our baseball gear to practice as Farm recruiting is tomorrow, and Brandon will have a skills review for possible placement if Dave is not coaching. Both kids practiced hitting off the tee. I played catch with the opposite kid while the other was batting. There were several dog owners with their dogs. Peyton wandered off, and she went to play with one sweet dog. He was playing catch with his owner who had a slingshot-type thing for his tennis ball. Peyton ran alongside the doggie, and then the dog dropped the ball in front of her, far away from the owner. Peyton didn’t know what to do. I yelled at her to throw the ball! Dave said, “Ew, that’s gross.” She tried to pick it up, then stuttered. The dog gave up and took the ball back to his owner. He threw it again, and Peyton chased the dog who had already retrieved the ball. The dog dropped it again, and again, Peyton didn’t know what to do. Finally, the owner came over, and handed Brandon the launcher. Brandon tossed it, but it was only a little further than when he threw it. The dog came back, and then Peyton was handed the launcher. She really threw it far! We told the owner to say thank you, and then came back. The dog and the kids got a lot of exercise! I still have to get my steps in for today, so we’ll head to the mall and walk some more!

First Fall-ure

Tonight, while I was about to start exercising downstairs, after I’d just left Dave in our room, I heard a noise that sounded like a bunch of toys falling down. I thought Dave was up and about, and maybe stepped on a box of legos as I had one time. I went upstairs to inspect, and as I did, Dave was coming out of our room. At that point, I knew it wasn’t him that had made noise. We convened in Peyton’s room. I heard her saying, “I cannot do it, I cannot see!” She was on the floor, rubbing her eyes. Her eyes were closed, and she went back to sleep right away. He shored up the side of the bed with her shams that my mom had just gotten her. She did well for a week, but tonight wasn’t meant to be!

Library Time

Today, there was a whole lot of running around. Dave dropped Peyton off, while I took Brandon to school to read to his class. It’s been two months since I was there to read, and the kids all knew I’d be there when they said hello to me at flag salute. One girl even walked and talked with me to flag salute, telling me how Brandon and another kid in class were talking about Bieber and his troubles. I did hear Brandon tell one boy, “That’s inappropriate to talk about” when he was talking about something else. I was proud of him for that. I did warn him about talking about stuff at school. After reading the class, I went to the library to return the book I’d borrowed to read to the class this month. While there, I learned of a program the library is offering – a book of the month club. The kids read books each month, and then answer a question. If they get it right, they get a stamp. If they collect four stamps, they get a gift card for ice cream. If they get eight, or complete the year, then they get a new book. I thought Brandon would be willing if he heard he got ice cream. And the program started in September, so four months had passed already. The caveat was that the student had to be there in person to sign up. And it is only for 1st graders and above. I asked if the students could pick books in grade levels higher than their own, but the librarian suggested that they stick to their own grade levels. I checked out a few books for both kids, which I hadn’t done in awhile, then left to get Peyton. I picked Peyton up before 11 am, and we went home for lunch. She ate, then took a nap, but it was only 30-45 minutes or so. She woke up around 1230 pm, and then instead of forcing her to sleep more, I decided we could go to the dollar store for more thank you cards. Peyton ran out, so she couldn’t do anymore. We went to piano after that, and she put up a little fight there. I don’t get how she is so enthusiastic while at home, and will tell me she will do well in class, then completely shuts down when it’s “game time”. We are hoping this isn’t going to happen with tee-ball, as it’s pretty ridiculous. After piano was done, we went to return a gift that was a duplicate from her party. She chose something else, along the same lines, and then we left to get Brandon. When I got him, I explained the library program and asked if he was interested. I don’t think he heard past “ice cream”. So we drove back to the library, and he walked up to the librarian. I love that this kid is not afraid to try new things and engage in activities. I’m trying to use him as Peyton’s role model. He may get cranky about things, but in the end, he’s usually willing to give his best effort. So, a different librarian checked him in, and she questioned whether I had the right paperwork and reading lists from the last few months. She probably thought this kid is in 3rd or 4th grade, and that we were sand-bagging to get free ice cream. Well, she got him his book, which he filled out, and gave him a brief explanation of what he needed to do. I proceeded to help him pick out a book for each of the first four months of the program. He read each book within 15-20 minutes, while Peyton read her own books. When he was done, Peyton would read his quiz question to him. He took pride in getting the answer correct, and I had to skim the book to make sure he did. He wanted to take the easy way out for one month, but I told him he should have to work for it a little, and I coerced him into reading a book that was 70 pages. Granted it was big print, but it was still a chapter book. He went four for four in a little over an hour. After he was done, we went back to the same librarian who issued the reading log to him. She looked at him, and said, “You read all those already? Perhaps you should be selecting harder books!” I explained to her that I’d tried to ask if we could go up a reading level, but was told to stick with his own grade level. I did tell Brandon if he participated next year, then he’d have harder books to read, since he would be at the lower end of the grade range. He shrugged, and then said he wouldn’t do it next year. I think Peyton could hold her own, but sadly, she isn’t eligible for two more years. The librarian handed me the gift card; she couldn’t give it to Brandon directly, since he took off to pick out books to check out. He’s a Wimpy Kid fan, so he picked two he hasn’t read yet. He said Uncle Jeff’s books were too hard, and that he’d read them when he got to fourth grade. I’m not sure how he randomly picked that, but he said by then, he’d be able to read them quickly. Not to be outdone, Peyton picked her own Wimpy Kid book, too, to which Brandon said, “Why are you picking that? You can’t read that! Don’t ask me for help, either.” Well, that pretty much solidified it for her, as she stuck to her guns to check it out. It was silence in the car as they were both reading. Only Peyton broke it, when she would spell out a word and ask how it was pronounced. Of course, that set Brandon off with, “See! I told you you couldn’t read it!” When we got home, Dave hadn’t come back yet. I gave the January book to Brandon to complete, while Peyton started reading some of the other books that I’d gotten earlier in the day. It’s amazing how quiet it can be when both kids have new books at their disposal. Finally, they gave into hunger, and I got them dinner. Dave came home shortly after that, and he took over the rest of the evening. Tomorrow we are splitting up, as Brandon and Dave have basketball, while Peyton and I will go to a red egg and ginger party. Brandon didn’t know anything about it, but Peyton told him, “We’re going to Lucas’ party!” Brandon had no idea who or what she was talking about. It’ll be a drive, so we’ll have to leave basketball early. Too bad, since Brandon is playing at least four of his friends from class/school. But no hard feelings, as at least 3 of them, if not all four, will be coming to his birthday party 🙂 Even the teacher weighed in on it, since Carter and Brandon both told her about the game. Her only words were, “Have a good game” to both of them. We’ll see Tyler, Wyatt and Theo, too!

One of Brandon’s classmates moms emailed us some pictures of their last field trip. She drove Brandon when they went to the historic museum downtown. There, they experienced life in the mid-19th century. She thought it was funny that Brandon was really scrubbing the clothes hard on the washboard, and also enjoyed milking the cow.  Glad to be able to see these, since I haven’t been to any of the field trips (they are on non-Fridays, and my car isn’t big enough to warrant going).

Just Dance!

This Christmas Dave got me two XBOX Kinect games to play. I picked the kids up early today, as Dave had a meeting and dropped them off this morning. We were home by 415 pm, and I had them do their homework, and we ate dinner early, by 5pm. They were all done and showered by 6 pm. I turned the game on for the kids, and Brandon just told me that “dancing’s not my thing, I’m just going to watch.” So, Peyton and I were up, ready to dance, then suddenly, Brandon jumped in! Apparently, dancing IS his thing, as he wasn’t in last place! Actually, after a few songs, he ended up the winner (the song was Just Dance, of all songs)! Peyton was complaining that she never won, so I let her pick the songs. I told her there was one song that I’d played before that she could use her “robot” skills. The kids had fun dancing to “Roar” while providing vocals as well, as you get points for that, too. Hopefully they will get tired out, and make up for not playing outside since it was too dark already. Peyton even knew some of the songs that I didn’t – “Gentleman” by Psi! She said she knew it from school. Now the two of them are salsa-ing. Dave came home in the middle of one of the songs, and we all looked guilty, like we were caught in the middle of something we shouldn’t be doing 😉
