Today, I was at work from before 8 to about noon. Dave realized how much food we had still, some yet to be cooked, like green beans, salad (extra greens), and cheese Dave had bought. He wanted more help eating it all, so he texted me to get reinforcement. We hadn’t had the Zhang’s over since they came back. I thought initially that we were going to have Jennifer plus two kids, then realized Jonathan was back, too! I’d been texting Bonnie during the day, too, as I figured we could entertain Connor and Logan, too. Everyone agreed, and Dave ended up getting more meat, to feed the kids (and adults) drumsticks. Bonnie was going to bring over pumpkin muffins, while Jennifer suggested fruit, but Dave declined, since we still had lots of fruit, too. Jennifer changed to bringing ice cream! I got home around 1230, with both kids in bed. They were both awake, but on their way out. Brandon asked me, “What are you doing here?” I’d come through the front door to avoid waking anyone up with the garage door. I took a nap, too, and Peyton came down first. The Brown’s were going to come between 3-4, but they texted they would be arriving in 15 minutes right at 3 p. They prompted arrived in the designated timeframe. Brandon played host by offering Bonnie a drink. The boys played with Brandon and Peyton downstairs a bit, but when they went upstairs, Brandon excluded Peyton from his room. Hers was such a sad face…they were playing beyblades, which he just got out again today. I lured her away with the prospect of coloring a bag she’d gotten for her last birthday. She enjoyed doing that with Bonnie and I talking, while the men were outside. Soon, Bonnie lost sight of Stuart, but later found them putting on the side of the house. Later, the boys came downstairs and all the kids ended up outside. Peyton re-joined the group at that time. The kids were playing with the football and golf balls, until there was a minor injury. Ice took care of the situation, and then playing resumed. As this was happening, the Zhang’s rang the doorbell. Jayden was fascinated with the Skylanders, as were the other kids. Jess went to the backyard, and soon after, dinner was served. We just fit outside in the backyard, with the kids telling us that “we needed to sit down at the other end”. The siblings all split into pairs, sitting across the way from one another. It totally just worked out that way. The kids ate pretty well, with all of them having at least a drumstick. Soon, the kids were all back inside with Dave, while the other 5 adults enjoyed a little quieter time. It was getting dark and a bit cooler, so we headed back inside, bringing all the food back in. Dave had the kids watching a movie, but the xbox gave out on us. The kids all turned around at the same time when the movie went on the fritz. Soon, Dave was back to the rescue with TS3. Phew. Crisis averted. Dessert was served, and all got ice cream except Peyton, who was still banned. She handled it quite well, enjoying her grapes as a substitute. Later, I did comment to her how well she handled the situation. She answered, “And??” I did mention aloud that she’d get her pumpkin pie after the turkey trot, as that was why she was running it. After the movie was done, our guests left. The kids headed up for showers, and they were in bed by 745 pm. Despite both having naps earlier in the day, both were out by 8 pm. Looking forward to a short week!
Here are the pictures I managed to take…

Wicked Connections?

Peyton’s been really into Annie since seeing the musical last week.  She’s  been karaoke-Ing the songs on you tube.  I’ll save the video for our channel 😀.  Spare the audience as it’s a bit rough.  She has been practicing a lot. I want her to get excited about Wicked which is coming next year.  I’ve been showing her videos from the musical so she’s aware of that music.  When I show original cast footage, she says, “That’s Elsa!”   She knows the name so I’m sure that’s how she knows it. But it’s funny that’s her go-to Idina character.

Dave hosted his coworkers to celebrate Cathy’s birthday. The kids made a sign for the backyard but it took a few takes.  They spelled out “Happy birthday, Cathy” one letter for each page.  But since they were working together, when it was all said and done, some letters were done in duplicate while others were missing.  Here’s their final product:

The cake had happy 21 st birthday.  Peyton was convinced she was 21 since the cake said that! I asked her how old I was, and she told me, “40!”   I need a cake with a lower number next time so at least one perish believes I’m younger 😀.  After dinner, Brandon provided some entertainment with his clarinet.  They were impressed considering he’d only been playing since August. Peyton went up and played a bit of piano.  Brandon was able to have a temporary little brother in Trevor, who is 19 months.  He was super sweet with him while Peyton entertained Trevor’s dad.  The evening ended early as we started at 2.  Guests were gone by 830 so it was perfect to get the kids in bed by a so-so hour for having fun with friends and hanging out.

Recess

At the PTC yesterday, Brandon’s teacher informed us that she will go over missed homework and assessments for a chance of a regrade if the student truly didn’t understand what was going on. He had a 2.5, and last night, he took it to heart and re-drew the hand out again to fill it out. He completed it in his room, and then I suggested he go in at recess today to review with his teacher. He refused, saying he didn’t want to miss out on recess (20 minutes). Since it’s a short day, he was calculating that he wouldn’t get free time until later at CDC, like 3 pm. School gets out at 1135 am, so there’s no lunch at school. I told him what his teacher had told us all, and he still said he didn’t want to go and wouldn’t. I didn’t threaten; I just told him he’d get extra practice on the weekend if it didn’t get fixed. Today, when I picked him up from CDC, he told me that he did go during recess. He worked with the teacher for 10 minutes, and he got the re-grade of 5. He fixed all his mistakes, and he still had time to go out with his friends and play. He even had to tell his friends to wait up for him, since he had to be with his teacher. He had 1:1 time, and he ended by telling me he told his teacher that the reason he was there was because “my mom made me”. I asked him what she said about that. Her response, “Good job.” He’s supposed to be taking more responsibility for his actions, but I guess I’m hoping this article applies to boys.

PTC x 2

Parent Teacher conferences were scheduled back to back. We started by meeting with Peyton’s teacher. We had not yet seen her report card, so she provided that to us first before speaking to us about it. Peyton earned 4.5-5’s on everything, expect “investigation and experimentation” where she earned a 4. And in behavior – she earned 3’s in follows school and classroom expectations, and respects people and property. She is meeting expectations, but has a strength (4) in contributing collaboratively, and 5’s (leadership level) in both returning assignments and organizing self and materials. She is showing a 5 in sportsmanship as well. She is reading at a level of N, which is the max for the grade level. They need to be at a J before the end of first grade, and they will not test higher than an N. That’s where she left off in kinder. The teacher said she will need to continue to delve deeper in the texts for Peyton, and has informed us of ways to continue to have her grow in her reading. I was happy to hear that though she will not be tested at a higher reading level, that she will continue to be pushed and challenged. There are a few other kids in M and N, who she will group together when they form their reading groups. I was happy to hear that Ms. A will put Peyton’s RTI folder away for now. It’s a folder that was started last year after her “trouble” with kindergarten. Ms. A hasn’t seen any of the behaviors; she told us she didn’t look at it much, since she hadn’t needed to. Finally, Peyton’s math score is 528; for 1st grade, she is to be between 238-390. I thought she was beating Brandon, but when I looked again, it wasn’t so. For fourth grade, the range is 563-654. I tried to ask what the score meant, and if it was translatable between grade levels, as is the reading, or if the score is scaled only for the individual grade levels. She couldn’t say for sure other than the questions get harder the more correctly they are answered. It is harder for her to be challenged as she likes getting things right. Ms. A knows she strives to be first, and recognizes that she is showing her leadership, but also has to find appropriate ways as well. She is working on learning from her mistakes, and discussing conflict. She and Daniel are “an old married couple.” She nags him if he is not doing something right, and he just lets her boss him around. They get into tiffs, but they get over it quickly, and play together again. She has not been sharing food either! It is fun to teach her, even for me, as she enjoys it! It’s just figuring out how to navigate it so she takes it well and doesn’t shut down.

We went to the book fair to shop. We got one book each for each kid’s class, and then selected one for Peyton to read. It was a Chinese-American theme, much like the one that Brandon received from us. The PTSC (s=student) started with Brandon in the hot seat. I had already received his report card, but he had some things to go over. He had a portfolio that he had to come up with a piece of work that demonstrated a challenge (he picked the job application), a fun activity (science project to make oobleck during the fall festival day),
something he was proud of (all 5’s on 3 tests in a row), and something he learned – plurals. He looked nervous, eyes darting to each of us while he talked. He was speaking softly and calmly otherwise. He got through his packet and inhaled deeply, then looked up for approval. Ms. M asked if Dave or I had feedback for him. Dave sat in silence. Way to throw me under the bus, buddy! So, I complimented him on his thoughtfulness on writing up each of the half-sheets of paper to describe the four pieces of work. We came up with a chart for him to work on – both academically and socially, and the teacher will be holding him accountable, as will we at home. We walked out of the conference with him to get Peyton. He immediately asked, “So how did I do?” He also sheepishly informed me that he got less than stellar marks on 2 out of 3 of his most recent tests. His goal is to slow down with his work and be more thorough. He needs to be more responsible for his work. He turns everything in on time, and he only recalls one time where his assignment wasn’t turned in. He was proud of the fact that he can work independently, and help others, too. His reading score is 615 (415-520 is the range for him), and his math is 699 (grade level for math is 563-654). He’d increased from 647 to 699 in just the three months since starting school. I learned that his 3.5 in “measurement and data” was based on one test, which was word problem-based. He will have more opportunity for this throughout the year. The other 3.5 was for exploration and settlement, which he also needed to improve upon. Rest of the assessments were proficient (4), 4.5 and 5’s (advanced proficiency). Great at following school and classroom expectations, respects people and property, and consistently completes and returns assignments (leadership level). He’s also leadership level for organizing self and materials. We’ll work on neatness and accuracy. Poor guy had to do homework quickly, then go to piano tonight. It was after 6 when he got home, then had to eat dinner and finish up his homework. Peyton was in bed by 8 pm, while Brandon was about half an hour later than she. We’ve had a long day…and we’re only in day #2 of the week!

SW time and sleepy

The kids managed to earn 1:45 of SW time so now they’re well into the second episode.  They are warned before it goes on that if they fight, they will lose their privileges.  I went to turn off the movie just a few minutes after the official time. Both were sitting at the foot of the bed with their respective blankets.  Mesmerized.  Neither complained when I told them it was time.  I’d given them a three minute warning already so it was past that but it was nice that there were no complaints.  I tucked Peyton in, and she was cold. I layered all the blankets and she looked to be almost asleep before I was done. No nap today really did her in.  Reminds me to go tuck her in now.

We saw Annie today with V and her mom.  We ate lunch beforehand, and the play was 2.5 hours.  She hung in there but wasn’t too chatty today.  Hence the early bedtime.  I didn’t take pictures as we weren’t allowed.  They also enjoyed checking out the orchestra and seeing the instruments.

AGD

It’s time.  We’ve been getting AGD catalogs for awhile now, and Peyton will look but never really asked for one.  She would see friends with the dolls and still never showed interested in her own.  She knows most of them are 8+.  And Brandon sweetly told her, “When you’re eight, I’ll get you one of the dolls.”   So I saw a deal at Costco for a discount on a gift certificate.  I got it, and I was trying to find “the right” one that looks most like her. Today, we were looking at the catalog and showing my mom.  I went upstairs to change clothes, and my mom followed me to tell me she had one on order already. Later tonight, before bath time, she took her hair out and shook it out and flung it over her shoulder. Then, she turned her back to Dave and me and asked “Look, isn’t it just like the American girl doll?”  Funny girl.

Birthdays

Today, Brandon had a birthday party to attend so Dave dropped him off and headed to do errands.  I stayed with Peyton and got her to sleep.  She said she wasn’t tired, but I got 45 minutes out of her before the boys came home.  Both kids ate lunch before I sent Brandon to nap.  Peyton and I headed out to the library to check her book of the month answer. We returned to find out that Brandon hadn’t slept but at least he was in his bed trying.  We headed up to the Kong’s.  R was turning 4 so we were there to play with the bounce house for the rest of the rental period.  M was at soccer with Dave while R was playing with his birthday toys.  He and the kids were playing nicely with Legos.  For awhile and it was nice to catch up. They switched positions quite a bit but played well with one another. We stayed until the bounce house had to go then we headed out.  We tried to time it to eat dinner and get back in time for the game.  We succeeded!  The kids didn’t go to bed until 8 but they shouldn’t have problems sleeping.   Fun that we made new friends yesterday and got to catch up with old ones today.
