It’s all in a name

Dave called his mom tonight before they embark on a cruise to Mexico.  He joked with her that she may not be able to be let back into the country.  She didn’t get it. And then he said because of the wall.

Peyton laughed. Because she understands political humor.

Well as Peyton was saying goodbye, she said, “See you in six months!”  Brandon said, “why?”  Apparently Peyton doesn’t want to see them for another six months. Maybe she’s mad at her for forgetting her mom’s name.  We’re going in two weeks. I’ll just repeat my name over and over again.

Brandon told me he couldn’t wait to find out who was president today. I thought he was talking about student council but they did that already.  He told me, “No! Like Trump or Clinton!”  Oops. More political than I thought!

FOMO

FOMO – Fear of Missing Out. That defined our day today.

This morning, the kids woke up at 630 am, not bad considering the time change. It meant we had more time to get stuff done. Like piano. We practiced first thing, then went down to a hot breakfast from Dave. We headed out to the birthday party around 11 am. Nathan’s 1st birthday party was Warrior’s themed. My gift will fit in perfectly! A KD shirt 🙂
We found a seat in the restaurant and waited for lunch. My parents showed up shortly after, and the kids went to say hi. The restaurant got really crowded very quickly, so we ate in a hurry knowing we’d have to leave. Right about an hour later, we said thank you and goodbyes to head to our next event, the fire station tour! We were running late, so Dave dropped us off. The problem was that the fire truck had just left on an emergency call. The girls were all climbing the big tree out in front, even though I told Peyton to not to. Of course, after the truck made its return, one by one the girls got down from the tree. Peyton was the last one in the tree, and with everyone watching, she fell off the last foot or so. She didn’t catch herself in time, and kind of got stuck and caught up on the bottom in her dress. I think she was sufficiently embarrassed enough to teach her a lesson. We headed inside the station for a tour of the truck and the station. We were talked to by one of the few female training officers. She’s been with the department for 16 years. Such a good role model for the girls!

Dave was there, and he whisked us to the piano recital. We dropped Peyton off, then bolted. I returned Dave to his car, while I turned around to go back and wait for Peyton to be done. She was about 45 minutes late to the recital, but her teacher was going to squeeze her in. I waited another 10 minutes before taking her to basketball practice. She was about an hour late for this, but better late than never. H had just gotten there, too. Dave and Brandon were waiting for us. She finished up the remainder of practice, about 45 minutes, then we headed to our last event – the Girl Scout mini fall festival. It was a bunch of booths for the SV troops. The girls had a lot of fun; Peyton was the odd man out, so she joined a pair of girls to be buddies with. I talked to her old softball coach, some parents of other grade levels from school, and then the other moms in our troop. Finally, we gathered around the camp fire and sung songs! She was even daring enough to go perform in front of the large group, though she was with her troopmates. So glad she didnt miss out on anything. She earned a badge for bringing canned goods for the drive and got to spend more fun time with her friends. I learned that another request was made for basketball, as one of the GS troopmates requested Dave as coach, hearing about him from her soccer teammate, who was on Peyton’s softball team. Very small world!

At the end of the last event, Peyton asked what was next. I told her a shower, dinner then sleep. She didn’t disagree. She also noticed it was darker earlier and asked if it was daylight savings being over. She was totally right! I confessed I turned her clock back last night. Haha.

STEM event

The girl scouts had a STEM event at NASA! I convinced Dave to drop me off, since the instructions said it was a bit tricky to navigate through the facility. We practiced piano for both kids in the morning, then we headed off to the event. There were already a ton of people there, but we finally found our troop. After checking in, we went to explore the Coast Guard boat. The girls got to explore on the boat and take pictures with the life ring. They also learned about the different instruments the Coast Guard uses to rescue people.

When we went inside, there were many stations of hands-on demonstrations and learning opportunities. The girls were overwhelmed, but they mostly stayed together and learned a lot about science. They had fun make and takes, and we spent almost our entire session walking around the room. We saw one of Peyton’s softball teammates and a few other kids from school and around town. We were kicked out after 2.5 hours, but we could have easily spent another 2-3 hours exploring all the different stations.

After we were picked up, we headed home to eat lunch. Later, we went out for dinner, then the kids walked back with Dave, while I drove. They got some exercise in, then showered up and prepared for Sunday. I snuck into their rooms to change their clocks back, since I hadn’t previously.

Movie and dinner

We watched the matinee of Trolls on its first day out. It was a 430 show but we were there about thirty minutes before it started. We had assigned seats in our favorite theater.  Dave took the solo seat not attached to anyone else. Of course. Then, Brandon sat next to daddy of course. Then me, then Peyton.  Brandon and I were in the “love seat” with the arm rest that comes up. Peyton was on the other side, and she was not happy to not be sharing. So we took so photos.

Happy guy

Then this:

So I asked if she wanted to sit on me.

Then it became this:

But I could barely breathe. She eventually went over to her own seat.  We had two kids on either side of us slurping icees through their straws. Both moms of said kids were on their phones. Yes, in the theater, partially obscured by a sweatshirt on my side, and in plain sight on Dave’s.  At least I stayed up the whole movie!  Very cute and a great soundtrack.

We headed to dinner after that, trying a place that we’d seen in LA when we were last there. It was good!  We then headed to ice cream where the kids had the tiniest kid’s scoop ever. But Brandon immediately thanked me for it! He didn’t complain at all about the size. It was seriously a half a shot glass full of ice cream.  And it still cost a lot!! Peyton got sorbet and loved it. I told the kids if they agreed upon a flavor, we could’ve gotten them a bigger one to share! They both declined. To each his or her own!

Grammar Police and shoes

Peyton was reading a library book and then looked up at me. “This is not right,” she said. I looked, and then asked her what it should be. It was a sentence, which ended in “too”. But it didn’t have a comma before too. It’s funny she just can’t enjoy the book; she has to find the mistakes!

I bought a pair of shoes for Brandon’s drama performance. They have to be neutral in color to match with his Indian costume. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money, but I also wanted to make sure he could wear them again. I got them in the mail today. From across the room, he told me, “Nope, those aren’t going to work.” So, I made a big deal about them, and opened up the shoe like they used to in old shoe stores. I put his foot on my leg, and worked his foot into the shoe. I even made a big deal about how squishy the footbed was. He was skeptical. Finally, when he got his foot all the way, he looked satisfied. I asked him, “Are these comfortable?” He smugly nodded and said, “Yeahhh….” He hasn’t taken them off yet!
