Last game!

After losing all season long, every game, they had won the last two, against the same team. Because they won on Wednesday, they had to play tonight. Except that I am on the father daughter planning committee and had been working on this for awhile now.  The dance is from 6-8 and Peyton’s game started at 7. Boo.  We had been setting up all morning long. Peyton came in first after dismissal and helped me.  Then Brandon came in, and I sent him to shop for books at the book faire. He played nicely with a friend and for once, my kids were not making trouble.  Dave did come get them around 4. I came home shortly after as we finished up ahead of time.

As far as the game was concerned, Dave compromised and dressed up for the occasion and brought Peyton to the dance.  Brandon had baseball that he missed but he was due for basketball clinic. I asked Tricia if her girls were going to basketball but found out they were going to a different gym.  Tricia was gracious enough to offer to take Brandon anyway!  I did take her up on it and we coordinated.  We had Brandon opening and closing the front door with his key. He had his clothes and water all ready to go. He was told to watch tv only (versus the computer).  He had about an hour and a half to stay alone.

In the meantime, dave contacted an acquaintance he knows loosely from Peyton’s team.  The boy’s older brother is Brandon’s age. Luckily, the dad responded quickly and said he’d watch Brandon just in case. Then, he offered to take him back to wherever he needed to go so Tricia wouldn’t have to go back and get him and in case neither of us were back in time. So we took him up on that.  And relayed the information through Tricia as she hadn’t picked him up yet.  He doesn’t have a phone so he doesn’t have communication with us by this point. Phew. Talk about utilizing the village!

Dave stayed about twenty minutes, just in enough time to take pictures. Then they left. Anna and her dad stayed a bit longer as she wasn’t pitching and he’s not Dave.

I was going to sneak away but it was too far and not worth it.  But I was getting text updates from another mom and Anna’s dad.  Apparently, Peyton had two strikeouts in the first inning! She hit off her other friend, Rory. And got to third but couldn’t be hit home.  Then, she made an awesome catch playing short stop. She was running to third, Dave said “booking it” and caught it with a backhand, a foot off the ground. I heard from Brian first and then an excited dave when I saw him in person.  Then the wheels came off. There was a homerun hit because of a series of errors.

We finished cleaning up as the game was done. I asked dave if he could intercept Brandon because I didn’t want to leave school until I got confirmation that he was there.  Dave did go get him and then I had to drop off a key at a nearby mom’s house. We were all home by 930. And I texted Tricia to inform her we were all together. Phew. What a day and night.  But it turned out beautifully.

Brandon’s recap

Tuesday, Brandon’s team won 2-1. He had sacrifice at bats to score both runs. But, Dave said also let one go past him in the outfield to let the other team score their run. Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner

Last night, I was at girl scouts while Dave was at Brandon’s game. Normally, the kids have the games at the same time, but his was scheduled for Tuesday this week. Good news is that they won their game quickly, so they were at dinner by 7 pm. We headed over by 730 pm to join some of the other kids on the team. They had saved us two plates, and Peyton and I scarfed down our portions. We headed home for a late night.

Today, Peyton had her game, and Open House was going on. I had my PTA shirt on, ready to go to school, but I wasn’t in the mindset to go to school especially since Brandon’s teacher was going to see Hamilton, and Peyton was not free to go visit the third grade classrooms. Peyton started out pitching, and she did a great job of getting the ball over the plate. The first batter hit off of coach pitch, and then the ball was hit to the third baseman who fired it to first. The second batter hit and got on to first. But she tried to steal and the catcher threw the ball down to second, who caught it and tagged out the runner! This is a FIRST for our team, and we don’t even see it that often in Brandon’s league. We practice it all the time, but this time we had all the pieces in place. The final out came when the first baseman hit a pop fly.

She was the second batter, and she hit off of Dave.

Peyton did have a misstep when she tried to catch someone stealing second, while at second, but she had dropped the ball after it was thrown to her. She was looking for the tag, which she knew to do, but she didn’t have the ball in her glove! It had popped out and fell out behind her. She did get another chance, when the shortstop fielded the ball, while the runner was going two bases; she threw the ball to Peyton, who caught it, and tagged the runner cleanly at second for the out. The girls are talking to each other and knowing where the plays are without coach intervention.

There was a pickle play, where there was a girl at first who tried to steal. Peyton was at second, and the runner was trying to steal second. She covered second, and the ball was thrown to her, and she ran the player back to first, all the while staring her down. The parents thought it was so funny that she was daring the runner to go to second. She had her hand held up high with the ball and charged the runner.

Dave also warned the girls in the middle infield that if their best player started to steal, then they should fake the throw back to pitcher, and after she goes, then tag her out. They didn’t have a chance, but Dave was warning his best players of the possibility.

Final: 12-6! Another victory, against the same team that they played on Saturday. Now, they play on Friday, at 7 pm, which is Father-Daughter dance, so we’re missing two of our daughters and two dads. Brandon will be on his own for basketball, and I’ll be at the gym. Tomorrow is the band concert, and Brandon has math and vocab Friday! Just get me to Saturday!

Our SHOT!

Michelle told me about Hamilton tickets opening up but with a “restricted view”. We bought two tickets, separated by a few rows. We had to enlist both parents today, since the kids both had events at 130 pm – Peyton had her piano party while Brandon had his challenger game. My dad didn’t want to go far, so he took Peyton to her one hour party, while my mom took Brandon to his baseball game. They got lost but found it eventually, while Peyton and my dad didn’t go into the piano teacher’s house for quite a while after sitting outside the house.

Dave had to wait around for team photos that he’d missed with Peyton, then we headed up to SF. It was a beautiful day in SF, in the mid-60’s. We ate a quick lunch, then walked a few blocks to the theater. It’s so sketchy down there, I had my phone out, my glasses on, and I moved with a purpose. I didn’t even walk with Dave, walking ahead of him somewhat, and turning around to look out on my own. I was hoping our car would still be there when we got back! We got into the safety of the theater and to the potty we went. We got to the seats and marveled how close we were. We did have seats in the fourth row, two seats in from the aisle with a total 8 in our row. The angle wasn’t too bad, but we weren’t able to see the right wing. We were able to look deep into the left. The show started pretty close to on time, with no fanfare, but just the intro. Peyton and I have listened to a bit of it on Alexa, but I never realized how long it was! In full, it was 3 hours. We chatted with Michelle and Ted in intermission. We were so close, we could see full facial expressions and SPIT! Lots and lots of SPIT! Dave enjoyed it, as did I, and we had a great time. We rushed home just after it was done, as we had to get back to free my parents and take Peyton to her first team party for her summer competitive team. We made it on time, as Dave wanted to make sure we weren’t late, since we requested the coach move the meeting to accommodate our schedule. The kids all got along, and they were playing together and having fun. Here are the pictures from today:

Game Summary

Yesterday, I invited my dad to come to watch both kids’ games, since they were not overlapping. He was to have arrived around 9 so that I could take him to see Brandon’s game, but he showed up almost an hour early, in time to hear Peyton’s piano practice. He decided to head over to Brandon’s warm ups. I stayed and finished up piano, then made a coffee and breakfast run for my dad. I showed up with one minute to spare. Brandon had a good batting day, getting on base twice. He was nervous that my dad was coming to THIS game, since he was playing a strong team. He even asked me, “Why are you having him come to THIS game?” Their team has won most of their games, but he wasn’t convinced that they would win. He didn’t do much on the field, as there were not many plays he was involved in. My dad was trying to continue to entertain Peyton who was trying to keep warm during the game.

We went out to lunch then we went home to relax for the next game. Dave took Peyton over and the rest of us followed shortly thereafter. Brandon was bragging about his sister to my dad, “Apparently, Peyton is the best player on her team,” in front of some of the other parents and families. We told him that Dave took over for the team, but there was a dad that might have said something to her. So, Brandon said, “To make a long story short, she quit.” He about summed it up! She did make some awesome plays, with a backhand popup fly ball, running from second base to call off short stop. She also had a few put-outs from the field to first base. I even heard a “Play’s at first and second (with runners on first and second), watch runner going to 3.” I didn’t know where it came from, but I realized it was Peyton calling out the play from short stop, unprompted! She’s been hesitant to do this in the past, but I told Dave I heard it, and his response was, “Yes, she feels comfortable saying it now, and is taking more of a leadership role in this as she’s understanding the game more now.” She played pitcher for the 4th inning, which is the inning that there are no run limits, like the other innings, where you can only score 4. She struck two out, and then she put out the final out that was hit to her. There were no runs scored on her. The next inning, she got up, and she hit solidly off of Dave. I stopped filming after she got to first, but then she kept running to second.

She ran to third, then slipped and tripped 2-3 feet short of third. She crawled to third, but they overthrew third, so she stood up and ran home. Not the prettiest, but she got the job done. The game ended at the standard four innings tied. We were the home team and just managed to tie it up, so we went into extra innings. The team was able to hang in there, but we were down by 3 runs going into the 5th inning. We had to score 4 runs, but we worked on one at a time. The girl up to bat had no idea how important it was for her to get a base hit, with runners on 2nd and third. There was 1 out, so all she had to do was put the ball in play! She did that, and the runner scored going home. The place erupted! This was our first win all season long! It was really good for the girls to get one, that they worked so hard for! Super exciting for them.

We all went home, but Dave stayed behind to wait for another kid’s mom to show up to pick her up. Peyton showered up, while Brandon got ready for volleyball clinic. Dave wasn’t home yet, so we all went, with Peyton soaking wet, and met Dave at the gym. He stayed for awhile, then left with Peyton to get ready for beer night. He was taking his coworker’s husband, while she was going to the mall. We dropped the men off at the party, and I took the kids to Sweet Tomatoes, since Dave doesn’t like it anyway. Peyton fell asleep on the way there, but she woke up by the time I parked. We made it through dinner, with Brandon even saying, “It reminds me of Cabanas (the buffet restaurant from our Disney cruise),” and then before I even told Brandon what my plan was, he said, “Yeah, I know, brush my teeth, shower and go to sleep.” I told Peyton if she woke up and I was gone, it meant that I had gone to get daddy from the party. She asked, “Then what should I do?” I told her, “Go back to sleep.” She thought about it, then said, “Oh, okay.” I left for about 45 minutes to go pick the boys up and to hang out with school friends. We came home and the kids were right where they were supposed to be, never even knowing we had left!

Friday Community Nights

We had band this morning, so I was out at 730 am with Brandon. Poor Brandon had to bring his science project in, with his giant poster board, and his clarinet and music. Dave stayed home long enough to drop Peyton off 30 minutes later. I stayed until the rest of the show was over, then I headed to work.

I worked until I had to pick up Peyton. We took Hope to the book faire, then we came home with her to hang out for a little bit. They had a snack of apples, and played air hockey and legos before we dropped her back off to her grandma, who is in town visiting while her parents are traveling, and who was waiting for her sister in Brandon’s class. I got a text from a mom friend from school, who has a kid one year younger than each of my kid, with matching genders. She asked if we wanted to come over for a get together that she hosts. I asked Brandon if he wanted to go to C’s house. He said, “Yeah, that sounds good. Are YOU going?” Uh, I’m inviting YOU, kiddo.

We then came home and practiced piano, as that would have been what she would have done if she had stayed home in between pick ups. Dave came home a little later and brought Brandon to batting practice. Peyton and I baked up the taquitos and cookies that we were bringing. Dave and Brandon met us there after baseball. But they were needing to leave for basketball after about an hour. We got to have fun with friends both inside and out of the house. The boys were playing outside while the girls were inside, except Peyton took up a nerf gun and started taking prisoners. Dave was outside and getting caught in Peyton’s fire. When they left, she came back inside to hang out with the girls. The hostess ended up telling me she grew up with families with similar aged kids. But she hadn’t had these for her own kids, so she decided to host her own gigs. She’s an event planner by trade, so she is well-suited for these gatherings. She said there are some parents she knows, but they do not have kids her kids’ age. Or there are some kids who her kids are friends with, but she doesn’t know the parents well. So, she invited both those parents she knows and those who have kids their kids’ age. Win-win! The kids were mostly on their own, doing their own thing except for the food part. Peyton had two immediate classmates there, so she was all set, except she started coming around to me every half an hour after 8 pm. I asked Peyton, “Did you want to go home?” She said, “No.” Then I told her to go find her friends. No one else was coming to check on their parents but Peyton. She still can get a bit clingy. Brandon’s practice was from 730 to 9. By 9 pm, we made our way to thank our hosts. We got home shortly after 9 pm, and Brandon came out into the garage before we even came inside and asked, “How late did you stay there anyway?” like he doesn’t know how far away we live. It’s a monthly event from daylight savings to daylight savings. We’ll see how long the kids last without fighting with each other. There were enough kids there that there shouldn’t be any problems. And that Brandon didn’t have to stay long helped as well. Tomorrow we have a full day of baseball and softball, and my dad’s coming down. Brandon is nervous since he is playing a tough team, and he doesn’t want my dad to come and see them lose. Peyton will most likely lose, but at least she’ll pitch tomorrow.
