Today started out like a typical Saturday – cartoons. Then Dave and Brandon left to get a tree, while Peyton ate breakfast with me. They came back, dropped it off, then headed to Brandon’s dentist appointment. Now that he’s in school, it was hard to reschedule his previous appointment (which I hadn’t factored in 6 months ago when I made it that he’d be in school), so they squeezed him in on a Saturday. I took Peyton to her gymnastics class, and she was the first there, and started alone. That meant she enjoyed it more, running around by herself. She was more shy when the brother and sister family came, but still wanted to listen and behave, since I told her the elf was still watching. And she could play on the high bar when we got to that room. We came back home and Brandon and Dave were already there. We then went to run our errands at the mall, returning some things purchased online, then going up to see my dad for lunch, and grabbing some things at the house. We headed back home; both kids had only napped for about 15 minutes each, so I told them they had to go back home and take another nap. It was pretty late by then, around 230pm. I got frustrated with them coming out, specifically Peyton, since I knew she needed a nap, so I went up to nap with her. By this time, I was tired, and just wanted her to sleep, but she kept touching my face, poking at me, and generally bothering me. Finally, at some point of me getting mad at her, she closed her eyes, and I realized this mid-way through my nap, and was able to go back to sleep in peace. The next thing I knew, Brandon turned on the light to wake us up. It was 530pm! The party started at 6pm. We were going to my work party, and I slowly started to get up. Peyton was still sleepy, crawling out of bed, only to lay down on the pile of clean laundry waiting to be sorted. I convinced her to change into her party dress, and she was more willing to move at that point. Dave had hopped in the shower already, and had ironed his clothes. I quickly scrambled to get the rest of myself and the kids ready. We were rushing out the door, but Peyton said, “Can you braid my hair?” So I sat and braided it quickly, while Brandon and Dave were in the car already. We were out the door by 620pm, by which time Michelle and Bonnie had both texted that they were on their way. We arrived right after Michelle, meeting them on the street. We saw the Brown’s car right behind theirs, so we knew they probably had just arrived, too. The kids were all happy to be there, so I’m glad we decided to bring them. This is our kids’ first year in attendance. There was a DJ, and Peyton was there with Mckayla, who wanted to hold her hand, but Peyton declined, pulling her hand away. The next thing I saw was Mckayla being consoled by Michelle. I asked Michelle if she was sad because Peyton didn’t want to hold her hand. And she said she was! So I showed Peyton what Mckayla looked like, and Peyton then agreed to hold her hand. But didn’t smile; she just held onto her hand and gave me “the look”. Mckayla slowly started to smile, then her full smile returned. Peyton continued to hold onto Mckayla’s hand, but didn’t look all that thrilled. We slowly lowered them to the ground (we had each been holding them up), and they continued to hold hands. At some point, they started to dance on their own, and Peyton was fine as long as she knew I was right there. It was better than her holding up the wall, like a wall flower; I’m glad she was having fun with the other kids. Marcus got a bit jealous seeing Peyton holding Mckayla’s hand, so he cut in, and Peyton returned to me while the siblings danced. Dinner didn’t started until 8pm! Luckily, the kids had had 1.5 rounds of appetizers, but I didn’t want them to eat too much to spoil their appetite. It worked, as after we got dinner for them, both kids ate their food without problem. Peyton tried all three salads, not particularly liking the one with the blue cheese. Half way through dinner, she realized Mckayla was eating while watching Tinkerbell. I told Peyton when she finished her salad and meat, she could join her in watching. She ate all her meat, and most of her chicken. I don’t have to convince her to eat the pasta, she did that all by herself. She was quite the big girl tonight. After she was done, she and Mckayla shared the phone. The girls looked so cute watching together. Every once in awhile, Mckayla tried to put her arm around Peyton and give her a hug. One time, I saw Peyton shrug her hand off her shoulder, but she continued to watch with her. I took Peyton to the potty at some point through the night, and before we even got to the toilet, she said, “Can you hold me? The toilet is dirty.” Seriously such a girl! I did hold her up, figuring she was probably right to not want to sit on the “public” toilet. She did go pee, and stayed dry in her dress all night long.
Brandon was with Dave, so I wasn’t paying as much attention to him. He didn’t seem to eat as much of his dinner, probably too many appetizers. After his dinner, he started playing games on Dave’s phone. We had forgotten all the games we’d planned to bring, since we’d changed cars, and left in a hurry. I went to go check out the desserts (cupcake wars), and was going to take Brandon. Suddenly, Peyton was following Brandon, and I had both of them. Luckily, it wasn’t too crowded up there and the kids were able to see to select their cupcakes. Brandon picked the blue one, while I picked the orange one for Peyton. I figured, it had a piece of fruit on it, it was probably healthier than the others, right? Haha…Ted wasn’t so convinced with my rationalization of this, but I tried. After dessert, Mckayla was getting up to go dance and wanted Peyton to join her. I asked Peyton if she wanted to go, and she stood up. I took that as a yes, so we went up again. This time, instead of rocking out to Christmas music, the DJ was playing “regular” music. We got some video of the girls dancing. Peyton only really wanted to dance with me, but Mckayla kept trying. Michelle got one hand, but Peyton wouldn’t give up my other. We still had fun. I kept checking on Dave, who was talking to the fiance of one of the other MAs there, so I knew he was okay. I asked Peyton if she wanted to stay for one more song, the one that she likes (“Dynamite”). I asked the DJ, and he agreed in 2-3 minutes. The song came on, and Peyton danced as agreed. She heard the song from the Kinect game from last weekend. She even did some of the same moves from the game. After that, I went to talk to Roxy, while Peyton kept asking me, “I wanna see Daddy and Bruddah.” Brandon was happy to play the driving game from Dave’s phone, but when we got back to the table, they were packing up to head out. The Kao’s were leaving, and Brandon made a sweep of his stuff at the table, and grabbed his lego bag. I’m glad he took the initiative to clean up after himself. We brushed their teeth in the car, but I hadn’t brought toothpaste, so we made due. Surprisingly, Peyton stayed up and we were catching Dave up on all that he missed not being on the dance floor. Brandon was trying to go to sleep, but was being disturbed by our talking. About 5 minutes before we got home, Peyton asked me, “Mommy, can I go to sleep?” We laughed hearing that, since she had to ask. Clearly, she benefited from the nap we took, but it was 10pm, and she was done. I asked her to stay up, so I could brush her teeth again. Each kid had at least one cupcake, so I wanted to use toothpaste. We did brush their teeth, and sent them off to bed, again, no complaints! We stayed longer at the party than we did without kids. And I have to admit, this is the first time we’ve really been out on the dance floor, and I credit the kids for that!
