Ice Cream Day

Today was Brandon’s turn to have ice cream, but it was an auction bid with a friend and his teacher. I picked Peyton up and went to piano, while Brandon and his friend, David, went for ice cream. I should have coordinated with her yesterday, and she would have saved some money! Peyton had a good lesson, and then we went back to get Brandon. He and his teacher were in their classroom, as she had already dropped David off at his house. She offered to drop him off at home, but since we weren’t going to be there, I said I’d come back and get him. He was on an ipad, while she was reading something, too. She said he was quiet as a mouse since they got back about 20 minutes before we arrived. I thanked the teacher; Brandon thanked the teacher, and then we walked out. He handed me a piece of paper, which had been stapled, but already opened. I quickly scanned it, and then saw “Math 6/7”. I quickly ran back into the room and confirmed with his teacher that he was placed into advanced math! She confirmed! And then reminded him, “Now we know he can do it as long as he puts his mind to it.”

Backstory: During tech week at drama, Brandon handed me a sheet of paper that had two test scores on it. He had a 1 and a 4. He didn’t remember taking the test where he received the 1. We were not given a head’s up as to when they were, so I’m not even sure when the tests were done. I don’t know if he stayed up late the night before, I don’t know if he ate well, etc. The third data point was an average of his tri-2 math scores (4.5), so he had 9.5 thus far. They need an average of 4 on the 5 tests, for a “magic number” of 20. I was disappointed because even if he scored perfectly, he would not make 20. But based on my attendance at the math placement info session, they would round if needed. So, he had three data points going into the final two tests. I informed him that he needed TWO perfect tests. He was sad during tech week, visibly upset and sullen, sitting by himself. The teacher told me when his tests were to be, and I made sure he slept well the night before. Luckily, he didn’t have baseball games prior to those tests. They take 5 data points to make sure there is no “fluke” that happened so that the whole thing did not rest on a bad test. But a 1 is pretty hard to get, right?!

Well, here it is:

He pulled off the upset! I don’t know how, but he did it. I texted the two mom friends that I shared the earlier bad news. They had consoled me previously, telling me to contact the teacher, his doctor (as he may have been having migraines as he was having headaches which were followed by vomiting), and possibly the middle school principal.

G’s mom texted back, “I’ve been DYING to tell you!!! I am SO excited and proud of him!!! Please pass it on for me!” G had informed her right away after school, since the kids were all checking with each other in class what they placed into.

G’s mom was going to have me call CDC, or him directly, not knowing he was out with the teacher. So happy for him, and I immediately texted Jeff (he was in the first round of texts, since I’d also told him the previous “bad” news) to get resources to keep him in advanced math. He didn’t look well, and I asked him first, “Did you eat too much ice cream?” He said, “Yeah.” He’d never had more than one scoop and he had gotten a sundae. He didn’t eat the whole thing, but he had most of it. Then, I asked him what else was going on. He said, “Math is going to be hard!” I told him we’d get him ready over the summer and that Uncle Jeff has already been informed. We’ll have him help us get resources to keep up what he knows and get him familiar with next year’s material over the summer. He didn’t seem upset by this at all. He knows better by now.
