So Motivated!

This morning, the kids were playing nicely together in Peyton’s room. When I went to call Brandon for piano practice, he even said, “Why? We’re playing so nicely!” I told him he could return when he finished. He had to practice before he was going to practice. I had Peyton practice while the boys went to basketball. While the boys were at practice, I did some more cleaning up, and Peyton watched a movie downstairs. I’d heard her talking, and I thought she was talking to the tv. As I went to check on her, I heard her on speakerphone. She’d answered my phone! I’d called both parents’ cells since they were travelling, and apparently, my dad called back. They were having a full on conversation for I don’t know how long. Good thing I have caller ID so she wasn’t talking to a stranger. I let her talk, and after awhile, she told my dad, “Okay, here’s Mommy.” I talked to my dad for awhile, then asked Peyton if she’d like to go to the library. She happily agreed, so we headed over. Her teacher had noticed on Friday that she has a chapter book she keeps in her backpack to read. It’s my copy of “Fox and the Hound”. The teacher asked her to remind her about getting some chapter books at the school’s library, the next time the class goes to pick out books.
It’s been awhile since we’d been, and I saw that the book of the month club was back. Brandon participated last year, reading a book a month, answering a question, and then turning it in the end for a free paperback. He actually enjoyed it! Peyton is still too young, as you have to be in first grade or higher to participate. But they told me there is a program for the younger kids – 1000 books before 6. The intent is for parents to start at birth, reading at least 1000 books to the kids before they reach 1st grade. The librarian asked Peyton if she was interested, and she hid behind me, but nodded her head. The librarian saw it, and she asked her how old she was. She answered, “Five and a half.” She noted “5” and the date, and then handed her her log. The log states it can be any book, and if a book is read more than once, which is often the case with younger kids (and even older, younger kids) and it is okay to log those as many times as read. Peyton picked about 20 more books, and then we headed home. We went up to her room, and I cleared off her desk to get her situated. I took down a few titles for her to copy, including the author. All the books in her bookshelf she has read at least once. We also entered all the Bob books that she started with. We have two complete box sets, so she wrote each title down. I showed her how to do shortcuts with the author’s name repeated. Some of her baby books didn’t have authors, so she would write, “No Author”. She worked on this for quite awhile. I had been cleaning, and I almost forgot she was here! The folder only had 100 lines at a time, then you return to the library to get a sticker at 50, and a prize at 100. She was still working on it when Brandon and Dave got home. Brandon was working on his own project – disguising a turkey his teacher had given him. He chose to hide the turkey from being eaten by dressing him up as a soccer player, specifically Messi. We had to look up the specifics of the jersey, but Dave had gotten some felt for the turkey’s clothing. Both kids were busy working on their projects while Dave and I hung out and supervised nearby. Finally, Peyton got hungry, and had completed her 100 titles. I reminded her that her reading program also counted as each was a book. Brandon had to physically be present to sign up for the book club, so our plan was to take the kids back. We all headed out, and I had brought Dave in case the librarian gave us a hard time as we’d just picked up the booklet today. But there were two different librarians there. Brandon signed up with one, while Peyton showed the other her reading. She received a sticker as well as a box of crayons and a coloring book. She was so excited! She was even more excited to go home and write the online books into her log. I set her up on the laptop, and she went through one by one and put the books into her log. She was working so quietly, while Dave was getting ready to watch the college football game. Brandon had started his September book of the month book upstairs. He was also playing, too, as his attention is not held that long. Finally, Peyton wrapped up at 150, as she was hungry and tired. Dave felt badly for her, even though I told him I wasn’t MAKING her do anything! The kids watched another movie while the football game was on, but Peyton kept coming back downstairs to see what I was doing. I was working on my calendar pages for the 2015 year that we were given last week. Audrey sent it out to us, and this year, there are 7 participants! It used to be just the girls from high school (Katy, Laurie, Cindy, Audrey, me) and one from Cindy and Audrey’s college years (Julie), and now it’s expanded to one more girl from college (Sheila). I’m looking forward to the finished product. I was assigned January and July, and I thought to make Olaf. I asked the kids if they thought he should go on January or July. Both kids declared he should be on July because “he loves summer!”

CAUGHT!

I was going to go to work after drop off, but Peyton asked me to stay for flag salute. In fact, she said, “Are you coming to me class to read? Make sure you go get your volunteer sticker (needed from the office prior to volunteering in the class).” I told her I’d just stay for Friday flag and then go to work. She was okay with that. I stayed for the announcements, checking my phone for the most part. Then, the caught being goods were announced. These are issued by parents, teacher and staff to kids randomly when good deeds have been noticed. Then, there is a lottery, with the student council picking one of the green caught being good slips. I happened to be there for Brandon the first week he got it in kindergarten. He hasn’t gotten another one since. I wasn’t going to start filming right off the bat, but the student council member started with, “This person is in kindergarten. This person was caught being helpful and responsible. This person was caught by Mrs. M. This person is in Room B. This person is Peyton.” I clicked on record as quickly as I could!!! Here’s what I got. I wasn’t sure if she would get up in front of 1000+ kids and parents to get her prize from the front of the semi-circle, but she had no problems!  She selected what looked like a bag of airplane pretzels, and I couldn’t wait to see what it was. I think Brandon chose a deck of mini-cards.  I met up with the class after she’d won, and Mrs. M was very happy for her.  She thought maybe she’d get it, since she was asking the class how many slips each of them had in the drawing.  Peyton was the only one with two in there. We also each played the big version.  Dave >> Me > Brandon.  I’m sure that will change in another year or so.  When she’s taller, Peyton will get in that equation, too.

Rushing; Disaster!

Everywhere…that’s our lives these days. Today, we had community nights, where the local restaurants would give back money to our schools. Easy dinner, but I had to get back to school for a training I was giving at 630 pm. I met Dave in the parking lot. The kids were excited, and each saw friends in the restaurant area. It’s neat to see Peyton wave to friends now, just like Brandon does. She saw more friends during Halloween than Brandon did, and she is starting to open up more, and will wave to them when waved at. Some of the friends, she will wave first! She said Hi to Stella, from her class, and Colton, and Cole. We HAD to stop by froyo since they were giving back to the school, too 🙂 I headed off to the meeting, while Dave held down the fort. I’d practiced piano with Brandon this morning, so only Peyton was left to do that. The meeting lasted longer than expected, and when I got back, I still had to do some wrap up emails from the meeting. Today was the second day in a row that we received an email from the teacher stating that Peyton had an EXCELLENT day, and ended up with blue both days. She made it through the hardest part of the week for her. I’ve been writing her notes for her to read in the morning, encouraging her good behavior. I did it last night for this morning, even though I was home.

Dave has had bad “car-ma” this year. He got into his accident earlier in the year, and this morning, he was opening up the garage to take out the trash and get ready to leave. The kids were eating breakfast, and I was making lunches. We all heard our garage door stall out, with a scrape. Dave asked me what it was, rhetorically. I just looked at him, as he went to inspect in the garage. He went to the back behind his car, and realized the noise was from the door hitting the back of Dave’s car. His precious! He had to dislodge his car from the garage door, and then realized somehow he didn’t set the parking brake well, and the car rolled back. He parks on the edge of comfort, as he likes more room at the front of his car. I always erred on the side of hitting the baker’s rack in the front of the car rather than the unforgiving garage door, and it used to drive Dave crazy. I tried to keep my mouth shut, as the kids as well, since they knew things didn’t sound good in the garage. Dave was out there for awhile, and I told the kids maybe Dave was crying about his car. Peyton didn’t think so, since she didn’t hear him crying. Both kids were very sweet and each one went independently, and separately to ask Dave about his car. I headed out with my coffee and left, knowing that if it were me, I’d have been totally chewed out. I waited until the end of the evening, when I got home from the training to ask him more about it. He’d already obtained a quote on the repair – $600. Lesson learned…

Pennants

Since the Giants have won now 3 WS’ since the time the kids have been born, I purchased pennants for them each time. It’s only been over this last year, as both were Dodgers that they have become anti-Giants. Either way, the pennants still remain in their rooms. Cleaned!

This morning, Dave took the kids to the gym to shoot some baskets. I was going to go with them, but I was the last to get ready. I headed downstairs, and I heard him leaving. Oops! That left me alone, but that meant I could be productive! I went to clean up Peyton’s room, getting rid of more outgrown toys, then cleaned up and downstairs. It felt great getting a huge box-worth of stuff out of her room. Brandon’s room is helpless and hopeless, and I’d tried to rearrange his books yesterday. They ended up cleaning up what they’d done before we headed out for dinner. With the time change, everything was a bit off, but we knew we wanted them to get down for bed early. They’d gotten up by 6 am (with the time change already), so I guess it could’ve been worse. They did go to sleep around 730 pm, trying to force them into the new time change. Dave didn’t last much longer, leaving me to study.

Deprived

The Christmas catalog came in today, and both kids got their chance to browse.  Brandon looked first, then Peyton took her turn.  I asked Brandon what he wanted, thinking he’d want more Skylanders.  From across the room, he told me, “Page 53.  I circled stuff there.”  I flipped through the magazine to page 53. Work

This morning, Brandon and Dave went to basketball practice.  I wanted to put in a little extra time, so I headed in with Peyton armed with a 150-piece puzzle, a book, and coloring.  I set her up and started working.  I mostly worked on the computer, but I also made a few calls. While I dialed, I made sure to tell her I was going to be on the phone, and she was very quiet.  Otherwise, we had the radio on with Disney songs, and she kept herself entertained.  She put the whole puzzle together in about an hour, then moved on to color Potter the Otter who drinks only water. Candy Preferences

The kids were told they could pick 5 candies each from their stash last night.  Peyton asked, “Five per day?  For five days?”  Nice try.  So, they sorted through their candies, and Brandon picked out Gobstoppers x4 and then 1 pack of M&M’s.  He asked if he could add all his Almond Joy’s to our snack bin.  I said, “Okay,” and then saw the collection.  He told me whenever he was asked to pick 2 candies, he said, “I picked Almond Joys every time.”  Peyton picked 1) Lemonheads, 2) Twizzlers, 3) jelly beans, 4) lollipop, and 5) Gobstoppers.  Neither of these kids are Dave’s.
