Star Wars!

Dave and I had a huge surprise for the kids today. I picked Peyton up after school, handed Brandon his clarinet and folder, then headed to piano. She did a great job with the teacher, earning 3 stamps for each of the songs she’d been practicing. She did her two scales as requested and rose to the challenge of doing five finger patterns with one hand playing legato while the other playing staccato and vice versa. It’s a bit like patting your head with one hand and rubbing your tummy with the opposite, then switching. The teacher was proud of her dexterity and coordination. She hung in there for her full lesson and then some since the kid after her was a bit late, then we headed back to pick up Brandon. We only had 3 minutes before it was time. I told Brandon that there was a surprise for him, but he had to go home and hurry up. He asked if Peyton knew what it was. I told him she didn’t either. Both washed up then finished up their lunches, before grabbing books to read. Peyton had been reading a bit in between activities. Peyton was lagging a bit, and I told her our surprised started at 5 pm. Brandon started to guess what it was that we were doing. The closest he got was Laserquest, since that was close to where we were going. I told Brandon that Daddy was meeting us where we were going, and he was on board. I drove while they read, and in 15 minutes, we were pulling into the movie theater parking. As I was, Brandon told me that one of his last friends had just seen SW last night. Now he doesn’t have anyone to talk to since they’re all talking about the movie, he said. Then, he looked up. And asked, “Wait, what are we doing at the movie theater?” Peyton asked, “Are we going to see SW?” Brandon asked, “Yeah, mommy, is she right?” I told them, “YES!” They were both so excited. We still had about 20 minutes left, and we got a quick sandwich to eat. Brandon snuck his in in his kangaroo pocket, while Dave shoved our sandwiches into my purse! (Good thing it wasn’t the new one!) I didn’t want to start eating the rest of my sandwich until the movie started, since it was still bright. Then, once the movie started, we were too involved to eat! I almost shed a tear when, upon seeing its first appearance in the movie, said, “That’s the Millennium Falcon.” (But then when she saw Luke, asked, “Who’s that?”) Peyton ended up being a bit restless, and was looking around at the source of the projection, and then sprawled out on the chair, and then finally, I had lifted the arm rest and had her cuddle up with me. I’d had my jacket and scarf, so I used those as blankets for her. She was yawning, and I knew she’d be the one who was tired. She tried to instigate with Brandon by looking at him, but true to himself, he was fixated on the screen. This was his first SW movie in the theater after all. He’s always been a good movie-watcher, and he can focus. The movie finished, but we wanted to stay for the credits. Peyton had to go potty, so she took off for the restroom. I stood at the entrance to the theater to watch the rest, and also to look out for Peyton’s return. I knew she’d get lost. After we were done, I ran out into the lobby to find her wandering around looking a bit lost. No tears. Yet. Just a bit panicky. I asked her if she was lost, and she said she’d gone to a different theater, and they were on a different episode. Uh, sure. We came home and they were in bed by 815 pm. Not terrible. Our week flew by already! Race day is on Sunday, and Dave is going to pick up our packets for us.

Crazy Days

Today was the beginning of the second half of the school year. And it was the first day of double practice for Dave. I worked until 430 pm though managed to get almost 6500 steps walking in the rain, then picked Brandon up from CDC. Dave had already picked Peyton and taken her to the gym. While I had him at home by 5pm, Brandon read, did the rest of his homework, and changed his clothes. We showed up for the last 10 minutes (at 540 pm) of Peyton’s practice, and then Dave headed out with Brandon, while I took Peyton home by 6pm. She ate, showered, finished up homework and read by 720 pm at which time I went back to school. As I pulled into the parking spot, Dave and Brandon were just walking out. I opened Peyton’s door, had her go with Dave, and went to my reading meeting at 730 pm. I sat in the training until 845 pm, then chatted with another mom until we got rained on. It’s 915 pm, and I have to do it all over again tomorrow, bright and early at 6 am. Failures – I didn’t check Brandon’s math homework. I had to text Dave the rest of the duties and to keep him abreast (Brandon’s piano, Peyton’s picture of a penguin and to pack piano books for me to take with me), as I didn’t think he’d remember the 1 minute exchange we had in the front of the school. Tomorrow, we have SW tickets at 5 pm! Never a dull moment around here.

First meeting of the year

Tonight was the first Girl Scout meeting of the year.  Dave said he couldn’t come back in time so I had planned to bring Brandon.  But he called five minutes before I was going to leave and told me he’d be home in two minutes.  I was getting ready to go and Brandon was practicing Fur Elise.  Himself! He wants to learn it then have me record him!! He started getting ready to go with me. He asked me when Dave was coming home. I told him a few minutes.  He asked if he didn’t come home what he should do.  I told him to call 911.  Peyton asked, “But what phone will you use, Brandon?”  He said, “I’m coming with you.”  I walked out the door just as Dave came home.  He lucked out. We were the second ones to arrive and there was a game going on.  A girl was blindfolded and another was to call out instructions to navigate her through a set of obstacles. The force is strong with this one…

Peyton was telling me all about Star Wars episodes 1-6.  She knew all the relationships with Luke, Leia and their parents.  She was able to cross back and forth between episodes 1-3 and 4-6. Missed me, Lyrics

After driving in the car for a few hours, Dave would make stops for potty and stretching.  Brandon and Dave would jump out quickly and be ready to get out, while Peyton would slowly get herself together.  That meant I was stuck waiting for her. But part of routine of getting her shoes back on was meeting me with a kiss and a hug. Like she missed me!

One of the stops we went to had a filthy bathroom. I told Peyton that was the reason we don’t walk with our shoes in the house.  Brandon came home and went through the front door. She shrieked, “Brandon! You just walked through the whole house with your dirty shoes! Ew!!”  He hadn’t heard my speech.  It’s always been known that she’s more the clean freak than him.  I’m glad she listened.

What she didn’t sing was “tangled up with you all night”.  Phew.

Funny guy

I was telling Brandon of a story that I saw on FB of a mom who took her son out on dates so she could teach him how to be a gentleman. Sheesh.

So thoughtful

Today, we sent Peyton to school with favors for her classmates for her birthday.  We had 24 paint books with brushes attached that she taped on each one.  When I picked her up, she had the empty bag that is given her.  She told me, “I had two leftover, so I gave one to H and V.”  Both girls are her friends but aren’t in her class.  One of them was going to be for her since she was included in the 24 and some other kid didn’t come today. Long Year-End celebration

After working a few hours on Tuesday, we headed down south. We sped down compared to our last travel timeframe during Thanksgiving. We arrived in time for dinner, so we stopped in MP since traffic was backing up. I texted May, who was at her son’s basketball practice. I’m not sure why kids have practice, since that’s why we missed our cousins. Abby had basketball, too! We headed over to their house after we ate dinner, and they had showered up. Alex and Justin were great hosts to the kids while we chatted with May and Ed. The kids were all playing with Legos, and we were checking out their extensive video game collection. We didn’t want to stay too long, so we headed out after about 30 minutes or so. We headed back to the house, and both kids had fallen asleep by then. We got them ready for bed. We got up the next morning and headed to the park after a quick breakfast at home. We spent most of our time at CA adventure, since DLand was super crowded. We found a new attraction – animation art studio. Here, there is a master artist who teaches his or her students how to draw a Disney character, in under 15 minutes. The kids were fascinated by it, and we ended our evening late Wednesday, staying for 3 sessions to close down the night, after 1130 pm. We had to exit the theater each time, but the kids had no problems waiting in line for re-entry. We got to draw Baymax, Pooh, and Mickey the first night. We returned for a “master class” that was 30 minutes to draw Captain Hook the next day. We also took in 2 sessions of Aladdin, since they now have fast passes for the theater. We tried to stay together on rides, but the kids’ interests divided us in two different ways. We did play some carnival games, which we don’t usually do. Brandon was embarrassed to throw balls with the cousins last time, but he did it this trip. He wasn’t successful; neither was Dave, but he did get close. Peyton bested Brandon in a horse race game, which requires you to roll balls to advance the horse. She won a small Barker Mickey. I beat four strangers at a water-shooting game to win a larger Barker Mickey. We had Brandon try his luck again, but he wasn’t successful. (He did later get a drawing from the master artist of Pooh, and Peyton received one specially drawn for her as we waited the final class on our first night – Olaf, to match her hat.) By New Year’s Eve, the last few hours remaining, Dave picked Peyton up a 7th birthday pin. She was a bit reserved in showing it, but when it came down to riding rides, she wanted to ride alone. Each cast member had to stop her and ask her her age. She proudly said, “Seven!” which allowed her to go on alone. She’d chosen the Tuck and Roll bumper cars, and the kids did it at least 3 times in a row. She took off her hat, and the cast member thought she snuck in. He realized after seeing her hat in her hand, “OH, sorry, I didn’t realize you took your hat off. I remember you.” We watched the countdown in Alice’s Mad T party, which was a bit uneventful. After, we took advantage of the kids taking a nap earlier in the day before heading to the park (by 3 pm), and we headed to dland. There, we rode Haunted Mansion (I found my name on Santa’s list – spelled correctly!), and Brandon rode Pirates with Dave. We even got to see the tail end of Fantasmic! Peyton’s never seen it before, and Brandon had, but back in the day, when he was younger (2), he didn’t like the fireworks, lights and noise. We had to walk away before because he was so scared. We did a bunch more in just an hour after midnight came and went, since most people flocked to Tomorrowland. We couldn’t believe how long the lines were still at that time! Upwards of a 90 minute wait for both Star Tours and Hyperspace Mountain. We decided to leave right around 1:15 am or so, and we didn’t get back until after 2 am. The kids were totally passed out, but kudos to them for making it that long in the first place. We all slept in, then headed back into the park for a shorter day. We got fast passes for Star Tours, and made the most of Peyton’s button with cast members wishing her a happy birthday. She was creeped out by a stranger, non-cast member who wished her a happy birthday. One cast member even asked, “Wait, is today REALLY your birthday?” She nodded, and he said, “Well, all those people were celebrating you last night!” Haha…hopefully she doesn’t really think that. For the second trip in a row, we saw one of Peyton’s classmates. Chloe spotted Peyton while we were coming back from our canoe trip. This was so random, since this was our first time in the canoes, and the line was pretty obscure. We waved hi and bye as Chloe was about to board her own canoe with her family. We separated quite a bit as Peyton and I did a couple of fantasyland rides – Alice and Storybookland, while Dave and Brandon rode Matternhorn. I’d ridden with him earlier in the trip, so I didn’t need to do it again. We also did a few trips into “It’s Tough To Be A Bug”, which the kids enjoyed time and time again. This was also a new one for us, though Dave and I had done it before. The kids had fun trying to memorize the lines from the show, as they were Aladdin’s lines. It was also nice since it was warm inside the theater, so we didn’t protest. After exhausting most of what they wanted, we headed home to eat a late dinner with the grandparents. They’d gotten Peyton a cake, and made her a nice dinner. Everyone turned in early, as we’d had a long three days. We awoke on Saturday and ate lunch before heading out on our drive. Dave wanted to drive at night to avoid kid-issues, but his parents told him otherwise. We left at 2 pm, and didn’t get home until after 10 pm 🙁 Fail. It was like t-day traffic! Brandon was very happy to be home in his own bed.
We resumed normal life today, with the kids going to basketball practice at the gym with Dave, while I did all the laundry that hadn’t been done at the parents’ house. I put away all our ornaments just as the kids came home. They showered up, then we headed to celebrate my dad’s birthday. Peyton had asked me when we were going to celebrate his birthday while we were on our trip. So we were making good at it. We’d already given him his present before we left, but we went to take him out to lunch. The kids were excited for the trip up. We ate lunch, then walked around a bit before heading back to the house. My dad also had dinner plans, unbeknownst to us, so he left before we were done watching the niner game. We called the kids to come up from watching tv to leave after the game was done. The kids were in bed before 730 pm. I had Peyton start reading Harry Potter, the illustrated version. The print is larger, so she only got through 4 pages, but it was a good start for her. I’ll have fun reading it over with her. Tomorrow we’ll start the new year off with school and work!

Pictures are a bit out of order since my phone wouldn’t let me upload them all at once.
