Class Update

Today, Peyton was to spend two hours in the morning in the new classroom. I was psyching her up for it this morning, as I was worried she’d be nervous. Brandon slept in, and he wasn’t up by 715 am. I was already out the door with Peyton, and told her to grab her clip from the bathroom and get ready to go. She didn’t come back to the bathroom, so I thought she was disturbing Brandon. Turns out, she was already downstairs, with the clip in her hair, and putting on her shoes. She was ready! She was also very respectful, and she whispered the whole morning since she knew Brandon was still asleep. She threw her hands up in the air and said, “It’s 715 am, Brandon’s STILL sleeping?!” I got her out the door, and somehow Dave thought I was still waiting for Brandon, while I thought he agreed to take him. Lucky for me, he did hang around, though he was NOT happy, since they had practice early today. I got Peyton off to school, then I went to work early so I could head out for practice and the team pizza party after. The morning was busy, and at around 12:15 pm, I received a text from Peyton’s new teacher: “So Peyton has decided she doesn’t want to go back to Adventureland! She is staying the whole day with us, she told me she wanted to stay in Jungle.” I first read it that Peyton changed her mind and wanted to go back with her friends in Adventureland, then read it again, and realized she’s already transitioned herself. She did already tell me Ms T was her favorite teacher, and that she’s been acting up lately, so I had to remind her to listen to the teachers. Ms T said she was doing well listening, had no problems, and had been having fun. Phew! I wanted to know how that all went down. I could imagine the teachers saying it was time to go back to her own room, and her just sitting there, not moving, but staring right at them. Alternatively, I could see her shouting “NO” and throwing a fit to stay. Ms Elena told me it was more of the former. She sat there with her finger in her mouth, not talking. After eating lunch with them, they asked her if she wanted to sleep in the new or old classroom. After no response, they asked her if she wanted to stay. She nodded to Ms T. And she will stay the rest of the week! We walked over to Brandon’s practice, and Peyton had fun playing on the structures. Soon, Kai came off the field and came over to play with Peyton. He kept wanting to play tag, and finally said, “You know, you touch me, then I fall down and laugh, cuz that’s a lot of fun.” He didn’t want to play baseball anymore, just run around with Peyton. So, they had fun until dinner was served. The kids all washed up, then chowed down on pizza. After they were down, all of them played on the structure. It was fun to see the kids just be kids and play around. Usually, they are confined to the baseball field, practicing, but not really being able to hang out, or getting yelled at for not focusing. I was able to talk to the other moms a little bit, but still had to keep an eye on Peyton, as she was smaller and younger than the rest of the kids there. Soon, she followed the two girl members on the team, who are older than Brandon. They were all running around on the blacktop, burning off energy. After everyone said goodbye, Brandon and I walked home, while Peyton rode in Brandon’s carseat. She enjoys being in “the big seat” and I knew she couldn’t handle the short walk home. She’d already had a long day. They kids have been going to sleep about a half an hour later than normal, but it feels like such a disruption in routine! We are definitely taking advantage of all the sunlight we’re getting.

Kelly Who?; Sneaky; Transfer Papers

The other day, Peyton told me on our car ride into school, “Kelly Clarkson is getting married. I heard it in Daddy’s car. (pause) Who is Kelly Clarkson?” I told her she was a singer. She said, “What song does she sing? I don’t know.” I told her the next time we heard a song, I’d point it out. Today, we heard “Catch My Breath,” and I told Peyton it was Kelly Clarkson. It’s a catchy song, and she started singing along with the words by the second time she heard the chorus. Both of us were totally off-key, hitting about 50% of the words correctly, but it was fun! She now told me, “That’s my favorite song. It used to be Bruno Mars (“Locked out of Heaven”), but now it’s this song.” She continued to sing it for Dave when he got home, as she was practicing dribbling while Dave grilled dinner outside. While we ate our dinner, both kids were excited to have chicken, salmon, and for Peyton it was the asparagus, while Brandon liked the green beans. After she finished her first round of asparagus, she asked for more before finishing up her salmon. We told her to finish the salmon first before eating more vegetables. Dave looked at me after he said it, thinking, “Did I really just say that?” After she was finished, we saw her sneaking some asparagus, like she was playing pick up sticks. One kid sneaks candy, the other sneaks asparagus. I guess together, it averages out.
Finally, we piled it on her plate, and she was so happy! But she got sad again because she wanted green beans, and we weren’t giving her any of those! Sheesh. She’s definitely got her fiber in her today.
Today, Peyton was given “new orders”. She’ll be shipping out of her old classroom, and moving on to the next. I’d been encouraged by her new teachers to ask the office to move her. We’d been told a few months ago that there would be no moves until the new school year in September. But the old and new teachers were encouraging me to talk to the office. The final straw was when I went to visit with Brandon on Friday. The teachers helped me formulate my list of arguments for my case: 1) both sets of teachers feel she is ready and according to her old teachers, she is the first to go when there is room, 2) she can read independently, and has been doing so for awhile now, 3) she’s been in the classroom for over a year now (I’d forgotten that point), 4) she’s been learning Spanish with the teacher that will be moving to the next class as of Monday, and I wanted to continue that, 5) it’s her last chance to be with Ms T (Peyton’s FAVORITE teacher) who is moving to the afterschool program with the big kids in the fall, and 6) there was room opening up as kids were already starting to leave for the summer. With that, I went to the office, leaving Brandon behind, so I could be uninterrupted. As soon as I got my nerve and started talking, the preschool director told me, “Her transfer paperwork will be in her file on Monday.” I didn’t even have to tell her my list! I even found out more detail about the transfer of teachers, as the current teachers weren’t even in the loop. Today, when I walked past her new classroom, Ms T stopped me and showed me that she’d made a file for Peyton already, and got her a cubbie all ready. She wanted me to fill out my paperwork for Peyton, with the emergency contact info (I told Ms T that Peyton already knew the cell phone numbers at least), and just orient me to the field trip schedule. She’ll get the benefit of the upcoming water field trip for her old class, and then the first of the next class will be the following Friday. I’d already made her eye doctor appointment, coordinated with Brandon’s, so it probably won’t work out. I was planning on keeping them both home, but maybe I could bring them both to HH. We’ll see about that. In any case, she is going to the new class tomorrow for a couple of hours in the morning, then a couple of hours the next day in the afternoon, and then will start her first full day on Thursday. I did have to inform her that her friends won’t join until next week. I told her that the teachers felt she was a big girl and could transition on her own. She was excited, and I’m looking forward to hearing about her progress. She was being a pill today though while I was reading with Brandon. I think she was jockeying for attention, as Dave was cooking, and she didn’t have a parent to play with. She started jumping on the couch, which she knows very well not to do. She looked bold face at Dave who told her to get down, and she continued. Brandon and I ignored her and kept reading. He started reading this book set in WDW, thanks to Meg for suggesting it. It’s meant for older kids, so it’s a good way to practice his vocabulary. I want to be able to read along with him, so he doesn’t just blow by the words, and can actually understand what he is reading. As for Peyton, she got to wait until we were all eating before she could join us (again, it was dinner she wanted, so she was quite upset about it, but I hope she learned her lesson). She was her sweet self after dinner and bathtime were both done, and she was ready for her hug. Tomorrow is another busy day with the end of the season pizza party after practice. Then, we meet up with a college friend on Wednesday, and game on Thursday. It’s no wonder the days fly by!

You’re Out!

Today was an early game, 9 am, which was good, since it was supposed to be a really hot day. Dave and Brandon left at 815 am to get there for warm-ups, while Peyton and I took our time getting ready, then set out on foot. The game was at the t-ball field, so Dave brought our chairs to set up. I wanted Peyton to sit still so I could watch the last Saturday game, so I packed up a bag for her. I brought her activity books, a regular book to read, and some pencils and pens. I also told her if she sat still, she’d get a snack shack ticket (we still had 5 for all the ones we’d taken away from Brandon during the season). I told him he’d get one back for the purples this week, and then he could see if he could earn another from the game. Turns out the game started at 930 am, so we were really early. The team was in the field, with the batters practicing, but Peyton sat right next to me and started reading. Finally, the other team showed up, and the Yankee’s were the home team. Right before the teams got up, coaches Tom and Dave were throwing the ball to each other and practicing pop-ups. Dave knew he was being watched, but he and Tom just wanted to have fun. I was smiling because the two of them looked like a couple of kids. All of the parents were around by this time, and Dave later told me maybe they were throwing, not because it was fun, but to give them some “street cred”.
Then the game started. Brandon started at first base, and the first batter hit a pop fly right to him. He stuck his glove up in the air, right under it, and caught it! He had this goofy grin on his face, as I don’t think he could believe it. He threw it back to the other team’s pitcher, and then tried his best to field the rest of the balls that were thrown his way from his teammates. Then, the rest of the game was fairly uneventful, with the exception of some heated parents who had something to say about the kids’ coaching. The parent, of one of OUR team, went to sideline coach, which is discouraged. It was very disappointing to see and hear, as I was overhearing other parents talking about how the kids should be learning this or that. These include counseling and sex therapy for men buy viagra cheap with erectile dysfunction to solve this problem. Some men have no erectile dysfunction condition. cialis generic online No PDE inhibitor is to be employed more than one time a day. get viagra prescription cialis order levitra Although all forms are good to treat the condition and normalize the health. Interestingly, these parents are NOT present during practice, when Head Coach Tom, Dave and Eric are doing their best, with a sound coaching philosophy, and most importantly, with Dave and Tom, experience playing the game. The game ended after stretching it to four innings, and the kids got their snack shack tickets, oblivious to their parents’ tension. We went to pick up some nachos, and a sleeve of corn-nuts for Peyton. She was only able to eat half, since she started wandering away and not listening during the fourth inning. Had the game ended when it should have, she would have gotten the whole thing. The snack shack is in front of the majors field, and there was a battle in extra innings between the two teams. Dave and I wanted to stay and watch, but the kids were a little restless. We had Peyton watch the game through the slats of the backstop. Brandon wanted to watch, but he was hot. We watched the final two innings, but as much as our parents were too intense, this was even worse. Dave heard some of the moms swearing, and trying to argue umpire calls, without fully understanding the game (you don’t need to tag the player in a force out!). After Dave got home, he got an email from Coach Tom, who was just venting. I had been texting Dave during the game the annoying things I was hearing from the sidelines, too, so he had those as responses to Tom. The parents’ attitudes will only get worse as the kids get older, if it is already starting at this age, when no score is kept. Good thing Dave is on the right side of things in this case and isn’t feeding into it. The last game is next Thursday, and it is against the team that Brandon missed playing, when we were on vacation. Supposedly they are also a competitive team, with the coach pleading with the players to get three outs and extra snack shack tickets would be rewarded. Unbelievable. Incidentally, they were not able to do that against the Yankee’s, so this upcoming game will be very interesting 🙂

Of note, one dad did come up to Dave and thanked him for his coaching.  He said something like, “Now that we’ve seen some of the other coaches, I thank you for what you do.”  Not sure what that means, but I think it was a compliment.
