Experience of a Lifetime!

Because of the awesome cookie sales, the girl scout troop earned a trip to stay overnight in a museum or other facility. They voted on the SF aquarium. So, we chose carpool buddies and headed up to SF. Some girls in the troop were meeting for dinner, but because we had a softball birthday party earlier in the day, I wanted Peyton well-rested. She’d gotten a black eye at the jump house, which was better than what I envisioned – a broken arm. I’d warned her about tucking in her arms when falling, but I didn’t account for her brother’s shoulder in her face. We put ice on it and called it a day for her jumping around. The girls and brothers played on the structure instead at the park. She came home, showered up, and then took a nap. The program was to last from 830 pm to 1130 pm! So I took a nap, too. We picked up our buddy down the street and drove into the city. It was an easy drive, especially since I’d looked up the Giants scheduled and knew to avoid that area. We arrived with about 30 minutes to spare, so we walked around and looked at sea lions, some of the shops, and then headed to get our stuff for the overnight. The girls were shown all the different parts of the aquarium and given docent-led tours. I’d been with the preschool at least 3 times, and I’d never had such an in-depth tour. We even got to put the otters to bed! The aquarium had pizza for snack, Amici’s that was delivered. The parents helped themselves, too. At the end of the tour, the kids were shown two tunnels to sleep – the light and the dark. I was still changing when the girls got settled. Peyton even snagged my pillow that I’d packed for myself. I later took it back 😉 I couldn’t find her in the light tunnel and was surprised she chose the dark tunnel. The light tunnel had the sharks. Only 4 kids chose the dark tunnel. That was just fine with me! We had to sleep head to head or toe to toe to avoid kicks to the head. Peyton was settled in with her friends, so I took a head to head position with another mom. I had a hard time falling asleep, and then staying asleep. The girls were chatting a bit, then suddenly, it got quiet.

I woke up at 620 am to girls whispering. I wasn’t sure who it was, but I wasn’t too surprised when I saw Peyton’s sleeping bag was zipped tightly. I waited until we were woken up at 7 am by the docents there to “kick” us out. Peyton got her stuff packed, while I got mine all wrapped up. We headed upstairs to brush teeth, change clothes and then eat breakfast. Boudin had delivered quite a spread, so we got fed! The final activity was to go around the kids’ table to tell the group 1) what they liked, and 2) what they learned. Peyton was third to speak, but I could imagine the terror upon her hearing the activity. Her like was sleeping in the tunnel. They skipped her on the what she learned. She was almost off the hook as the docent forgot her, but I reminded them. With some thought, she came up with that she learned sea cucumbers eat other animals’ poop. (And Brandon eats sea cucumbers!) We all packed up and headed out. While I drove back, Peyton passed out in the backseat. Our other girl stayed awake, quietly looking out the windows. We dropped them off, and Peyton woke up to say goodbye, then we headed back home. We found the house empty; we unloaded our stuff and were going to take a nap until the boys came in. Dave swapped kids and took Peyton to practice softball. Brandon had just come from there, so we did piano instead. After he brought Peyton back, she showered up and then headed for a nap. She lasted until about an hour before we headed to our second softball birthday party – to CEC. It was all fun and games, and no bouncy house. The kids tore through their tokens, but they did manage to get a few tickets to spend. Peyton even got some tickets that she got when the attendant “made it rain!” The attendant flipped tickets at the kids right in front of Peyton, so it was like a pinata scramble. We chatted with the adults about the upcoming season, and then after the birthday girl’s parents had finished wrapping up, we finally took off. We were exhausted, but I kept trying to keep the kids awake. They lasted until dinner, then with an early bed time of 730 pm. Now to start off another week with back to school nights x 2 and a CE dinner for me midweek! Bring it on!

Rest of the first week

Was fortunately uneventful.
Friday, I got the kids to school by 730 so that I could help with the volunteer faire. That lasted until about 930 am before I headed into work. I worked until it was time to pick up Peyton. At pick up, we saw H’s mom, who thanked Peyton for being a nice friend trying to help H overcome her change in routine nerves (crying). H’s mom was hoping they wouldn’t get sick of each other being in class, and two basketball leagues together. On the way home, I asked P if that was going to happen, and she said, “No.”

Dave was home already by the time I got back. I had Peyton shower up, while I packed and then showered as well before going back to get Brandon. When I got back with Brandon, Dave already had Peyton in the car and ready to go. We headed out to beat the traffic. Peyton fell asleep for a bit, but woke up when we got to the grocery store to get some last minute items. I asked her if she wanted to stay in the tent again with Mckayla, but she said she wanted to not talk all night long, so she said she just wanted to sleep with me. But then, she said, “Oh, but HE (daddy) snores! Can I just sleep by myself in my own tent?” She is getting braver! We got up to the site and set up shop. Soon after, the Brown’s arrived and the kids had more playmates. We didn’t stay up too late, though it was later than usual for the kids. We had hot dogs, hamburgers and burritos that first night. We had glow sticks as well! Dave did snore overnight, and it kept me up most of the night. Then, when he wasn’t snoring, the crows were cawing! The kids were mostly up at the same time, and soon, we started our day with eggs for breakfast. We hung around the campsite and the Kao’s arrived. We had sausages for lunch before heading out for a nature talk with the ranger on survival. The first half was in a picnic area, while the second portion was a short hike to props and stations the ranger had hidden over time to show his stuff without anyone disturbing it. Peyton and I hung out and stayed for the second portion, while Bonnie and Michelle took their kids back. I wanted Peyton to listen for the girl scout aspect, so she could be more exposed to these types of things. She was worried about walking far, but we didn’t go very far. We learned how to distill water, about the bugs that were out there as well as animals. She hung in there and was able to lead us back to camp. She was happy to be back with her friends, and I think it perked her up a bit. We played some more before it was dinner time. Kira, Ian, Chris and Kathy showed up right before dinner time. Kira had a soccer game, so that threw off their timing.
The chicken took a bit longer to cook, so dinner was bit later than usual, but s’mores came right up after that! I think because half of us had stayed overnight the first night, they kids were more tired out. They only needed me to tell them not to talk 3 times before actually going to sleep so that I could go return to the adults. We stayed up until after 11 pm, then turned in. I slept in with Peyton until after 7 am! She didn’t hear Brandon and Dave get out. Both needed to use the restroom; I heard them leave, but I was trying not to get up as I knew it would wake Peyton up. Peyton was very brave and went to the restroom most often by herself. At dusk on the first night, she was going to go without a light, and then Brandon was going to go with her. He changed his mind, and she was going to set off before turning around and asking, “Aren’t you going to come with me?” I really thought she’d go on her own. What I’d told them both was, “If it’s light outside, you can go on your own. If it’s dark, ask Daddy.” Luckily, the bathroom was close enough to the camp site.

Dave was rushing Peyton to finish the puzzle she was working on. She said, “I only have two hands, bro!” Brandon said Ian used “bro” often this weekend. He also said Ian told him not to stress in middle school (Brandon told him he was a bit nervous to start middle school), but he also told him to work hard. I hope that settles in for him!

So thoughtful! I love that the “village” looked out for her last week, and that I even got proof of it. Another mom/leader came up to me to check and see if Peyton had a good time. I told her had BEYOND a good time..she had a GREAT time. Another mom who was listening said it was a “letting go” moment. It was just right before I told her I hadn’t seen Peyton in a few hours because she was arriving with another family. I’ve really taken to the idea of “letting her go” now 🙂

Our Overnight Trip

Yesterday, after nap and lunch, we dropped Peyton off at her troop leader’s house. S came out to say hello, then we transferred Peyton’s gear from our car to theirs. They went in to say hello to S’s dad and brother and say bye there. She had to go potty (again, don’t know why she didn’t go when we left the house), but she made her way to the potty first before coming back to say goodbye. Her dad came out and met Dave and Brandon. He asked Brandon what school he was going, and asked which grade. Brandon answered, and then he told him he’d see him in middle school. Brandon nodded respectfully, then S’s dad asked him, “Do you know what I do at the middle school?” Brandon shrugged and said no. He told him, “I’m the principal there.” Brandon didn’t say much, but in my mind, I was hoping Brandon didn’t have to spend too much time seeing S’s dad. We said goodbye, and we were off. We’d forgotten our transponder, so we went back home to get it. It cost about 30 minutes, but we were hoping it may save us time later. We set off on our drive, and it did help somewhat so we didn’t have to wait in line at the toll booths. We got up there in about 3 hours, having hit some traffic on our way up. My mom met us at the casino, and we found her playing some random slot by our meeting point. She was going to take Brandon to dinner at the buffet, while we went to go get quick food. They came back to see us again and told us that the buffet line was too long, and they’d go to get food at the cafe. We took our food and ate outside. It was a perfect evening, with the outside venue. It wasn’t too hot or too cold, and I was in a sleeveless dress. We had floor seats, 18 rows from the stage. We took one selfie before the show, and Dave scored a free t-shirt that was thrown off the stage. Some other shirts were being launched from cannons, but those were sent past us. The show was to start at 7 pm, and only after 15 minutes, the first performer, Babyface, made his way on to the stage. No pomp, no circumstance, just on the stage! He sang most of his older popular songs, and then launched into a medley of songs he’d written for other artists. This was my favorite part of his show, as in the past when I’d seen him. This was Dave’s first time seeing him, and he enjoyed this, too. He sang a song by James Taylor, another from Eric Clapton, and his other artists he’d collaborated.

Here is the song from our wedding CD given out as favors:

He played for about an hour, then it was time to change sets for Boyz II Men. Dave and I were playing Name that Tune with some of the songs in between sets. They came on with a similar intro to that in Vegas, which Dave hadn’t seen either. Later, they, too, had a medley, from covers ranging from Ed Sheeran, Nirvana, and the Beatles!

Again, fun to hear songs from other artists in addition to their own songs. They went on for over an hour before calling it quits. There was no encore as I was hoping, but we exited the venue calmly. We went to the pool to see if the afterparty had started, but Dave just wanted to go home. We headed back and got home in 25 minutes. My mom left the door unlocked, though Brandon was worried about going to sleep with the door open. It was 11 pm, and we locked up behind us. We showered up to get the casino smoke off us, and then we headed to bed.
I was awoken by the ringing of the phone. I had no idea where I was, what time of the day it was, nothing! It took me a few seconds to realize where I was, and even longer for my heart rate to return to resting! It was good though, as we had time to clean up and get ready to go. Brandon was already up, and he ate breakfast, while Dave put my mom’s keyboard together as she’d requested. I wanted to get going back to Peyton. I hadn’t heard anything from them, which I figured was good news. We set out by 8 am with a stop by a coffee place for Dave. He’d been eyeing it for some time now. It was in downtown D, a college town. Brandon asked if he could go to school there. Dave didn’t want to have to come there to visit, since he wanted somewhere further away. I suggested Boston 🙂 Then, Dave got to thinking Brandon could go there for vintner’s school! Suddenly, he didn’t mind visiting him. We were on the road and projected to come back into town around 1030 am. I texted the troop leader by now, and then started getting pictures back! They were in their morning program, learning about more animals. They were going to be done by 10 am, and then they were allowed to go to the rides and other parts of the zoo. They were looking to be done by 11 am. So we got in to town, and we headed to a potty inside W-mart. Then, we waited in the parking lot for them to arrive. I saw them before they saw me, and Peyton turned and said, “MOMMY!” It was the sweetest! I walked over with them to their car to retrieve her belongings. I got a brief update about their time there, and found out they were the only troop/group for the overnight! They had a night program yesterday, and then a morning session. Peyton did a great job overnight, and in general. S, another troop leader, came up behind us with M, and she also told me that Peyton did an awesome job overnight. When I told Peyton to say a thank you, she suddenly became shy! Both of the leaders said that was not how she was before, and that she was jabbering away. She did get a hug and tickle in with S’s mom, and I believe a high five in for M’s mom. I thanked both for the opportunity afforded to Peyton to have them take her. We said our goodbyes, then headed to the grocery store. Peyton recounted what she’d done. They saw a hedgehog, capybarra, a LARGE rodent, a jaguar named Sophia, a large bunny, how bats catch food in a little web with their feet and eat, how skunks can do hand stands, how hedgehogs can get poop on themselves to camouflage themselves from predators, and got to feed sheep and a large cow-looking animal. They slept on the hard floor in the classroom area, and they had snacks – one chips ahoy last night, pretzels, and cocoa. This morning, they had pancakes, and she had two. She said she missed all of us, but she didn’t tell anyone. She didn’t have to potty overnight. They went to sleep around 1030 pm, and they were awoken by 7 am by Mandy, the guide. She said she really liked her name. She rode the Frog ride twice, one with the troop without an adult, and the other time, she and S went on it alone since they wanted to go again. Last night, they had pizza at PMH, and she had cheese since they didn’t have Hawaiian as she normally gets. S LOVES pineapple, too. She had milk. Dave got groceries while I took P to get an acai bowl. When we got home, she said she was tired. That earned her a trip to her room for a nap. She didn’t put up too much of a fight, though I’d wanted her to change and put her stuff away. She didn’t get that far. We woke up and went to Brandon’s scrimmage at a field nearby. I’d brought some food for her, since she skipped lunch. She threw around with Dave, and then we headed home. Both practiced piano, and Peyton was waiting for a dog-walking with Cody. Tricia let me know they were late due to F’s soccer tournament going longer due to their win. I told her Peyton had to get to bed early, so if it didn’t work out, that’s okay. Peyton was disappointed, but I read her the text, so she knew I had tried at least. They’re ready for their first full week at school!
Here are the picures…

They are mostly of Sophia. She was able to tell us they were of the tail, the head, etc. I don’t know though. It’s pretty dark.

Ice skating and camping

The girls wrapped up their ice skating session. Here are the pictures michelle took upon her arrival Friday.  I was there just after

I was there earlier in the day but was asked to leave by my kid.  I didn’t take a picture since they were still in the middle of their lesson. But I got their videos.  After that, we picked Brandon up.  Both were showered up as was I to get ready for camping. We waited for Dave to get home, then we headed out for dinner at Ike’s sandwiches. We bought three sandwiches for four of us. We were meeting up with theresa and Martin after making “The Climb”.  No joke of a hill.  We had lots of gear, and we started up the mountain. The kids each had something to carry – their backpacks and another bag for each.  I was carrying things up when I came upon a man with a cart.  I was doing him the favor of not having to haul it back down. Dave struggled with his own wagon.  We had to drop weight along the route as we were too ambitious.  We had the kids going back and forth picking up things along the route.  We set up shop in about an hour and a half meeting theresa and Martin along the way. I was soaked in my one sweat by the time we were done.  I wasted my shower! And because of it, I was also getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.  I layered up on clothes and sprays, lotions and the bracelet. The majority of the damage had been done.  They were sneaky and ate between my knuckles!! The kids fared better fortunately. We ate while theresa and Martin made their food which was surprisingly yummy!!  Peyton wanted their stroganoff more than her own sandwich!! We gathered around the fire until Peyton asked to go to bed.  She was tired. Brandon stayed up a bit later but a tip in his chair and a bonk on his head sent him to bed early, too. He didn’t argue when we suggested it after Peyton was asleep. It made things easier though. He was quite calm by then.  I couldn’t sleep that night well because the three of them slept with a blow up pillow. It squeaked every time they moved. The kids did not. But Dave couldn’t sleep. And kept tossing and turning. I mean squeaking and squeaking. When Brandon woke up the next morning, he said he still had a headache.

I’d warned him about tipping in the chair even before it happened but he never listens to my warnings.  We ate breakfast and then Martin and theresa joined us for their biscuits and gravy meal. That was yummy too! Peyton ate some eggs that Dave pealed for her.  As she ate, I heard crunching noises.  I asked her, “Shell?”   She quietly nodded. Poor thing! Brandon was given a knife to whittle a stick then helped Dave with some firewood to bring up.  I was scared he’d lose a digit or slice his knee.  Finally, he finished and I did a count.  Phew nothing lost. We waited for our next guests, The Brown’s to arrive.  We hung out with L and C to give them lunch while their parents unpacked the car.  They wouldn’t eat until their parents came back. I think they didn’t want food from strangers but were too polite to tell us that.  C told us, “I like cold food.”  They both told us they were hungry. They passed the stranger test at least!!  We enjoyed the brown rice spam musubi and cookies Bonnie made.

Both Theresa and Dave brought hot dogs for Bonnie and both bought Hawaiian buns.  That made me happy!! We all enjoyed lunch before kathy and Chris arrived with the kids. They had three carts and three of them pushing! Ian was a pusher and definitely pushed his weight’s worth!!  He then became babysitter for the younger kids.  He helped show Brandon more tricks in the kendama as well as fixed his broken one from the night before. Chris told Brandon, “Ian is the Doc Mcstuffins of kendamas!”  So true. He’s also the kid whisperer.  After the kaos arrived, the whole gang was there!! Everyone had smiles on their faces, which I was worried about because of the hike. Dave had told me the night before to not talk to him while he pushed the cart uphill.  Bonnie had her scavenger hunt all prepped and ready to go. The kids were paired up let loose about the camp site.  It was cute to see them working together.  Food was being prepped and cooked for dinner. It was still early but better to do it before hunger sets in and kids like mine become “hangry”.

Peyton set up “her tent” up high for her and Mckayla. Kira didn’t want to join them but didn’t mind being next door neighbors.  It had to be situated a bit but it worked out.

Dinner was a hit with Korean short ribs, pork chops and green beans. We had more Hawaiian bread and fruit, too.  We also had a s’more assembly line that chris put together.  He also used this power torch!! Luckily his eyebrows and lashes survived.

The kids played with their toys from Bonnie and even had a light show going. Depending on shutter speed, some pretty cool light pictures were taken!  We had a campfire going again and the kids were put to bed about the time the lights went out.  Now it was a matter of put to bed versus asleep.  Especially the two girls on top.  They had a few potty runs only because I was afraid of Peyton getting up to potty in the middle of the night.  Did I mention the portapotties that the park used to save water?! Ick.  Dave went to bed before ten. He didn’t want to be too tired for his flight.  I went to sleep by eleven. Apparently the girls didn’t until midnight!! Our kathy listened to them next door.  Both were in okay spirits in the morning! They were up by seven or so. I was picking up the tent while Peyton asked me to go potty with her. We all cleaned up the site early because we knew we had to get going early. And going down in shifts and together would be helpful. After breakfast and packing up and our requisite photo (take two from the previous night) we headed downhill.  Three groups got down in one haul.  Chris helped me with our wagon while I held his stuff then he was going to return the carts uphill to get the rest of their stuff.  We headed out behind the Kaos. Peyton was melting down slowly but surely so I got her to take a much-needed shower then an even more-needed nap.  She was out cold even while Dave packed up and left.  Brandon was sweet and told me at drop off “have a nice trip!” She woke up and had no clue where daddy was. We locked up a few hours later and went to my parents’. I didn’t have time for my usual post-camp nap as I did two loads of laundry along with sorting.  Next year will be our fifth camping anniversary and we’re already looking forward to it. We’ll see where our adventures to us.

What A Day, Part 2

Just when I thought yesterday couldn’t get any worse…today happened! Morning with the kids was the usual except Dave forgot Peyton’s bike for bike day, despite me reminding him 10 times, the last of which was as he headed downstairs to leave for work.  I popped my trunk open to NOT see the bike there.  Luckily, Peyton was not bent out of shape about it.   His response to me texting him about it was, “Oops.”   I got in to work and knew it was going to be a busy day with lots of labs to sort through. Then at 830 am, my coworker called to report “a problem”. I wasn’t online yet, so I didn’t know if she’d made it in. She called to tell me she was stuck in traffic, behind a “major multiple-fatality” car accident. She was telling me she was stuck 20 cars behind the crash. She wasn’t going anywhere, so she wanted me to get in touch with someone to cover her work. She then proceeded to lose it, as she telling me what she was seeing. “War zone” and “bodies everywhere on the street”, and then the cursing! She was totally losing it. She was previously an ED RN, who makes fun of me for being squeamish with bodily fluids. She went to NO after Hurricane Katrina, and now she was totally losing it! Her voice was shaking, and she started crying. She was near another truck driver who had watched another truck driver, his friend, crash into all these cars. I hung up with Paula, and set into motion plans to get her coverage. Bonnie and I got things settled and looked for information online. We found it right away! A single fatality. So far, but multiple injuries. The lanes were closed, and no one was going anywhere. Things settled down, then I started calling more people. About an hour later, Melissa got a call from Kathy. All we heard was, “Are you alright? Is everyone okay?” When she got off the phone, she informed us that Kathy was in a head on collision, which totaled the car. Both kids were in the backseat, and freaking out, but no one was seriously hurt. Kathy had some neck pain and was going to come in to get evaluated. But otherwise, wasn’t coming in to work. Turns out they were hit by an 85 year old who had no driver’s license, and he’d run the red light hitting two cars, one of which was Kathy’s. Luckily she has a big car! Now I really couldn’t concentrate! I got more updates from the first crash, pictures, from Melissa’s cousin, too. Scary pictures! Debris all over the place. We got to see Kathy who came in after her appointment. She was going to get xrays to make sure there were no hairline fractures.  We were able to have a nice long walk at lunch.  I was slightly afraid of walking on the sidewalk outside, for fear of some random car crash, with the way the week had been going.  Luckily, we tempted fate, and nothing happened!  It was good to be outdoors.  The rest of the afternoon was business as usual, and then we all headed out after a trying day.  I went back to pick Peyton up from school, explained to the teachers it wasn’t me who left the bike.  Peyton told me she was going to talk to “David” about it.  Brandon and Dave came home; we all ate, and then they headed to piano first.  Peyton and I walked over a few minutes later.  Both lessons went well, then Dave and Brandon left to go work on his homework, while Peyton and I walked back. Here’s video 1 (Sight reading).  Video 2 (London Bridge) . at the beginning of the week, she couldn’t play it without messing up notes.  She nailed it in front of the teacher, which she’s done several times now, when she plays in front of her.  Poor kids both look back at Mommy after they’ve finished up a song.

When we arrived at the piano teacher’s, we were still a bit early, so Peyton got to play with the dog.  Brandon only got a little time with the dog. Here are the pics:

So cute how fascinated they were by the dog, who was so calm and nonchalant about the whole thing, after he’d sniffed us out when we first arrived.

Brandon came home and told us “we ran into a lot of traffic today going to our field trip!”  He had no idea what he’d faced.  He said it was still bad traffic coming home, too.  I never thought about his field trip, not even once!  Glad I didn’t, otherwise, I wouldn’t have been able to stay at work at all…
