Today, after getting up, I had to go out and get wrapping paper. We got the next two birthday kids these board games, which didn’t really fit into a bag. Dave and I each wrapped one, and my goal was to get Brandon down by about 1030-11am for nap before our first party at 1230pm, thinking we’d leave around 12pm. Since we had gotten home so late last night, and the kids got up around the same time, they were pretty tired. I sent Brandon to sleep at around 1045am, and Dave fought with Peyton to go to sleep. He locked me out of our room, so I headed to her room to take a nap. I say “fought” because she was screaming for me, while I covered my head and tried to tune her out. I was afraid of oversleeping, so I kept checking my watch. I got up around 12pm, and Brandon was sound asleep. I even turned off his music thinking that might wake him up. Turns out, I didn’t wake him until about 1220pm. He slowly got up, went potty, and finally put his socks on. We didn’t get out of the house until about 1230pm. We were one of the last to arrive, and given he was still sleepy (his head was against the seat rest the entire drive), and the party was in full swing, he was a bit shy. I signed the waiver while another mom helped me get his shoes and socks off (he can normally do this by himself, but he was resisting doing anything). I had to force him into the circle, which had only kids, no adults. I wasn’t used to being the mom of the shy kid. Normally, he bursts into a room and fits right in! The other moms from our previous school couldn’t believe how big he was! Truly, he was twice as big as some of the kids in his former class. He made some of his former classmates look like Peyton’s size to me. He sat next to me during introductions. Joey, the leader, was really good, and I’m sure he had experience getting kids to participate. After going around the room, he asked all the kids, “Go sit on the white line that Brandon is sitting on.” Brandon stayed on the white line (I was happy to see). Joey was describing the next event – the hot dog. The kids were supposed to ride on the hot dog, which was a huge cylinder. The objective was for the child to stay on as long as possible, while the teachers sat on either side and tried to knock them off by bouncing and rotating the cylinder. Brandon watched as Joey picked all the kids to go. He finally started showing life when he saw one kid jump off. He shouted, “Hey, he jumped off! He didn’t even go on it!” with a big smile across his face. Brandon was the fourth to the last to get picked (Joey was probably trying to make sure was sufficiently warmed up). Brandon sprung up, and eagerly took his turn. I had a few seconds to grab my phone, and take a video of him. He too jumped off, before being thrown off. Just like Brandon, doing it on his own terms. Some of the other kids were really tossed off, especially the light ones. So Brandon was taking proactive measures to avoid the wipeout. After that, he went over to sit next to the birthday boy, and his good friend, Decki. Then I had to turn into helicopter mom and watch Brandon like a hawk, since he was now warmed up. Given he was one of the bigger kids there, it meant really watching his body. Decki’s brother has always had beef with Brandon, and even threw a few punches when Brandon was playing with some blocks that he was trying to take away. Brandon looked at him just puzzled, and I shouted for Brandon to walk away. Brandon did so without taking a second look at him. He also got kicked in the ball pit, and still no retaliation. I worry if he’ll take it out on someone else, later on this week, which has been the problem in the past. He had fun, running around during the free play and also doing the organized stuff. Most of the other parents checked out, when in fact, they should have been watching closely. There were some other fistfights with a few other kids. Fortunately, Brandon wasn’t involved in any of them. Some of the kids were kicked out and had to take timeouts. It was easy to see that most kids needed a nap by the end of the party. Any little thing would set some of them off to tears. It was cupcake time, but I squeezed a lavash roll into him before he was able to eat it. Then, the birthday dad passed out juice. I asked Brandon if he wanted juice or his vanilla cupcake (I was surprised that he picked vanilla over chocolate). He picked juice! He was glad to give up his cupcake. I decided to give him a bit of the cupcake, after he was willing to give it up. He enjoyed his juice, and ate a little more fruit and hummus before digging into his cupcake bite. The last activity was the zipline into the ball pit. He had fun with this, too. Here he is on the zipline. After we sang happy birthday to Decki, the kids all ran back to the parents to put their shoes on. Brandon was now with it enough to put everything back on himself. After he got his stuff together, he walked right up to Decki to wait. Decki was passing out the goodie bags. Brandon waited in line for his. Then he came back to show me (a superhero kite), and I told him to go back, say “Happy birthday to Decki”, and say “Thank you” to Amy and Andrew. I waited while I watched him do all three (Amy and Andrew were standing in two separate areas). We got back to the car, and I told him that he’d now accompany me to Theresa’s party. As I drove up to find a parking spot, he asked me who else would be there. Based on the cars there already, I told him “The twins,” and he said, “Auntie Thuy is going to be there?” Then, I went down the line, and said, “Auntie Michelle and Uncle Ted, Auntie Julie and Uncle Robert, Auntie Bonnie and Uncle Stuart.” We found our spot, and went inside. Right as soon as we went inside, there was a group picture being taken. We found a spot, and smiled for the camera. As soon as we broke, Thuy had a kid and asked Brandon, “Which one?” Brandon took a second, “Tyson.” Thuy said, “Yeah, you’re right.” I still don’t get it. We sang Happy birthday to Theresa, and cake was cut. It was banana cake, and it was ALL Brandon’s. I fed it to him so as not to make a mess. Jenny came up to him to say hello, and he kept ducking behind me. We were around the bar, and I was afraid of the glassware, so I told him he could hide behind me, even though I wasn’t sure why he was hiding in the first place. The other kids were just ready to leave when we had arrived, since they had been there awhile. Brandon wanted to know why Mckayla was crying. Ted had asked Brandon if he knew who he was. Brandon didn’t respond (more on this later). It was her naptime, and they were getting ready to leave. Brandon quickly made a friend in Dong, who showed him his phone with his games. He quickly found the boxing game, which I repeatedly reminded him in the car on the way home, that it was just a game. Brandon played nicely on the last stair in the hallway, while I sat next to him. I didn’t want to go too far from him, given he had a smartphone in his possession, someone else’s at that. We headed out after taking a picture with the birthday girl. On the way home, I was quizzing him, and said, “Whose Daddy is Uncle Ted?” Brandon said, “Mckayla’s.” Then I asked, “Who is Ashlyn’s daddy?” He said, “Uncle Robert.” Then I asked him, “Who is Ashlyn’s mommy?” Brandon replied, “Auntie Julie.” Then, I asked, “Do you know Auntie Jenny?” Brandon said, “Ah, kinda.” Funny. We met up with Dave and Peyton who were in MTN eating pho. I didn’t want to wait for them to come home, since I missed her! Brandon didn’t want to go, because he said, “Then I can’t go home and show Daddy my kite!” I told him even if we went home, he couldn’t show Daddy the kite, since Daddy wasn’t home. He was okay with it, after I told him he could show him later. He also was great about handing me all the candy that was in the goodie bag – a chocolate-shaped car. We met up with them at their restaurant, and she shouted out, “Mommy!” Then she said, “I moosed you, Bruddah.” Dave said she kept asking where “Bruddah” was all afternoon.
When we got home, we all played Jr Monopoly. Peyton was my dice-roller. It was a good exercise in math skills for Brandon as Dave tried to trick him and see if he was paying attention when giving him his “rent”. We sent the kids to bed around 8pm. Peyton had slept for 2.5 hours with Dave (lucky!), so she took a little more convincing to go to sleep, while Brandon willingly went down. Dave was patting Peyton to sleep, and she said, “Not my bottom!” Peyton’s last act before going down was to walk over to Brandon’s room. When I went in there, Brandon said, “She’s just trying to give me a hug goodnight.” She was on his stool, trying to climb on his bed. I got her up there, and she gave him a kiss on the cheek and a hug. Brandon said, “Hey, she didn’t even ask me!”
Now we’re sitting down to watch a movie Dave went out to get, only to have Dave realize he’s rented it before (I hadn’t watched it with him last time, so I was no help to remind him he’d seen it). He had a senior moment, and one of many more to come, I’m sure.
