Beer; Baseball

Tonight, Dave wanted to check out a local beer store to look for grapefruit beer like we had in Florida. Brandon was having a problem hearing, so he asked, “Deer store? But we already ate dinner.” Peyton responded, “No, BEER. With a B.” Dave and I just left it alone, but it was funny they were having their own convoluted conversation, about beer no less.
When we got home, Dave turned the SF/LA baseball game on while Peyton was in the bath. Kershaw was up, and he wanted Peyton to hurry up and finish her bath. Brandon up to tell her, and she rushed down, dripping wet, but missed his ups. Peyton’s Art

While walking through the hall today at pick up, Peyton stopped me to look at her art work on the wall. Like last night at Brandon’s school, I took a picture. This time, I had two hands, and it wasn’t as blurry.

Back To School Night

Today was a first. We were dropping Peyton off at CDC for the time that we were going to back to school night. We’d told her all week long, when we found out that that’s what we were going to do. It wasn’t worth my dad coming down for 45 minutes, leaving work early, and since she’s potty-trained, she was eligible to attend. This morning, I was reviewing the rules with the two of them. They always act out for attention when together at CDC around new people. Peyton looks for the attention in it, and this gets Brandon right into it, too. I told both of them they had to keep their hands to themselves. Brandon even went so far as to tell her, “Peyton, I will be playing with my friends. YOU need to go find some other girls to play with.” She brushed it off, and told us, “I’m going to go tell all of my friends that I’m going to my brother’s CDC.” She even wanted Neha to sit next to her, which isn’t usually the case in the mornings, since she talks too much she said. So, I left it at that, paying my money to the morning crew. It was $15 for Brandon, and $10 for Peyton. Basically, paying for the late fee for Brandon after 6 pm, and $10 for Peyton. And they were feeding them. Bonus! I went to work, ran 3.1 miles at lunch, and then left about 15 minutes early. I gave myself plenty of time, even stopping by home to get Dave. We arrived 15 minutes early, but it was too soon, since the staff wasn’t going to be in ratio until right at 530pm or so. So, we hung out in the garden for about 10 minutes, then later, we went back to CDC. As soon as we walked in the door, one of the boys said, “Hi, Peyton!” I think this made her feel welcome, because she was scanning the room for Brandon. It was Akhil, who we hadn’t seen since the first day of school. She didn’t say hi, but at least had someone she knew there. His little brother was there, but he didn’t seem happy to be left there. Other parents were checking in their younger kids, so we did the same. Peyton went off to find Brandon, then we saw Grace’s family come in. I wanted to introduce Peyton to Hope. They are the same age, and I’m sure will see a lot of each other next year. But, she was too busy with Brandon, and Hope was with her sisters, Faith and Grace. I quickly gave Peyton a hug, and she was left in the younger kid room, while Brandon ran back over to the big kids. She looked a little nervous, but she was fine. Dave and I went back to Brandon’s classroom and found his seat. He had written a note for us, along with a drawing. The teacher talked for about 30 minutes, then showed a slide show for about 15 minutes. There was no question and answer, as she asked parents to reserve questions for a later time to be turned in on an index card. Definitely saved us time! We went back to get the kids, and they were right about to eat pizza for dinner! They wanted to stay, but we agreed to bring a slice home for each to eat. The teachers said they both did well, and we thanked them and took off. We headed out to eat, and told the kids we’d save their pizza for the next day. While in his class, I took a picture of his self-portrait:

He also wrote a little biography of himself, and said, “I was born in America, at my mom’s work.” Nice, I can only imagine what the teacher thinks of that!

Monster; Presidents/Vice-Presidents

Peyton was telling me she had a dream last night. Her dream was that there was a monster in her closet, playing with her dresses (that’s where they are all hung). I was worried where this conversation was going to go, so I asked her if she was scared. She said, “No, I was playing with the monster! He wasn’t scary.” I was glad to hear she wasn’t bothered by her dream. So Peyton was telling Brandon and me today in the car, “Okay, Brandon and Mommy, don’t tell me, but who is the vice president for George Washington? But don’t tell me!” Basically, she was asking herself the question. We both didn’t say anything, then she answered herself, “John Adams.” Then she proceeded to ask her next question, “Who is the vice president for John Adams? But don’t tell me, Mommy and Brandon.” Before we said anything, she answered, “Thomas Jefferson.” Brandon butted in and said, “That’s funny, she knows the presidents and vice presidents. How do you KNOW that Peyton?” She replied, “From my flash cards.” She’s got two presidents down, 42 to go 🙂

Reading

Last week, Dave was reading with Brandon. They are supposed to read for 20 minutes. Apparently, Dave’s definition of reading with Brandon is sitting with him, but looking at his phone, surfing, whatever. I read along with him, making sure he doesn’t omit, insert, or invert words, which he tends to do. It sounds fluent, but he is not reading as written. So, when I saw them this way, I told both of them that the time hadn’t started, though they were 15 minutes in or so. Now, yesterday, they were reading again, but Dave was putting Brandon’s clothes away. I was walking by, and heard Brandon tell Dave, “You have to watch me otherwise Mommy will make us do it over again!” Haha…he learned his lesson.

Another Busy Weekend

Saturday morning, Dave went to take the kids to my parents’ house right after they got up. He had to come back for the team’s practice, but since my parents were leaving to go to the football game, there was no other time to “deliver” the packages. I got the morning to myself, until Dave came home. We both got ready for Theresa and Martin’s ceremony. We got there just in time, and got seated quickly. It soon started, and proceeded for almost the next two hours! It was a good thing we didn’t have kids there, as I don’t think they would have been able to last. After we stayed for one group picture, we headed to lunch. It was close to 100 degrees that day! Luckily, we were inside and it was cool. We headed to Islands, which we hadn’t been since it’d opened after I’d read the nutritional information. But since we didn’t have kids, and were able order around them, we took advantage. Dave had a burger, and I poke. We took advantage of the endless fries, and had the initial basket plus two others. Glutinous, I know. Then, we headed home, and I took a nap, while Dave watched football. We got ready to go the second half of the festivities. The reception was about an hour away, so we planned accordingly. We’d taken our family photos at this winery about two years ago, so we knew more or less where it was. We got there about 10 minutes before it was supposed to start. We met up with our neighbors, Nela and Josh, and the rest of our friends. Appetizers were already set up, as well as the bar! I ordered one of the signature drinks, the Perfect Pear. And it was – yummy! We hung out a little more outside before being asked to be seated at the tables. The venue was beautiful as as the bride (and groom). I love weddings, and this was no exception. We had a great family style dinner, and Dave was nice enough to give me a refill of my perfect pear. He’d wanted to cut me off, but since he was driving, I went for it! I really didn’t think there was any alcohol in it, which was dangerous. Dave cut me off at two. He did agree to dance after Kimthy pulled me up, and I pulled him. We danced for a couple of songs before heading out shortly after the other parents. We stopped for our milk and cookie on the way out. Genius! We did get a photo booth picture of ourselves, along with a group shot that I’ll have to get a copy of.
We headed back to my parents’ house, and we found the kids in the same room together. My mom was still up, and she told me she thought she lost Peyton. I was expecting her to tell me at the football game, but she said, “No, in your room!” She went to check on her, and she couldn’t find her in my room. She looked under the blankets, pillows, and then went to Brandon’s room. She said he’d fallen asleep first, and she must have joined him, not wanting to sleep on her own. I’m surprised they slept together and were able to sleep. No sooner did I take the picture did she fall off said bed. At that point, we brought her back with me to my room. She stayed there and didn’t move until the morning, after Brandon turned on the light in the bathroom, thus waking us both up. After very little sleep, we all got up to eat breakfast. Dave wanted to go out, but the kids just wanted pancakes and waffles. After breakfast, we all headed our separate ways. My dad went to work, my mom went to get her nails done, and we went to get my grandma a birthday present. In this time, Peyton had fallen asleep. We dropped her off to my mom, then Brandon, Dave and I headed back home for his first baseball game of fall ball. Peyton didn’t mind, and even waved at me, saying, “Bye-bye, Mommy!” She went home for a full nap (she’d only slept for 15 minutes in the car). Brandon went to sleep in his room until Dave woke him up after 30 minutes. He was cranky for having been woken up (he can dish it out, but he cannot take it). He changed into his uniform, and we headed out. It wasn’t as hot as I’d thought it was going to be, and the game was mostly played in the shade. Brandon did fairly well, considering he was tired. He got two base hits at three at-bats, and an RBI on the out that he did get. Brandon’s team ended up winning at the bottom of the last inning, as they were exchanging runs back and forth. We then took off to drive back to SSF for dinner. Everyone was already there, since we knew we were going to be late. Peyton was already set up with activities next to my mom. We ate dinner, and stayed until 745 pm! Peyton was supposed to have taken a bath before dinner, but when I asked her about it she said, “Oh Grandma forgot!” Haha…she was right. Brandon fell asleep in the car, as did I. We didn’t get home until about 830 pm, and the kids not in bed until about 9pm. Neither gave us problems, but hopefully they will not have problems at school tomorrow.

Family Picnic

So, I went to pick Brandon up, and then dropped him off at CDC.  I went to Costco to return the kids yogurt that I was worried about, then headed to get Peyton.  I stopped by to thank Ms Barbara, who claimed she was just doing her job. I told her she did much more than that, and she was very humble about it.  Peyton had just woken up from her nap.  We came home, and she started looking through some pictures to get a baby and family picture.  There’s a set of already-printed baby pictures, but unfortunately, they are bath pictures. She’s holding a shampoo bottle over her lady parts, but still, she’d be totally embarrassed.  While we were doing that, we heard noise downstairs.  We were in the back room, so I couldn’t be sure that there was someone there.  I called out to Dave, then sent Peyton to check.  Haha…what if it were a burglar!  She came back to announce Brandon and Daddy were home.  I didn’t think Dave would get him, but I guess it was like every other day.  We headed out to get dinner to bring for the picnic.  We got a few slices of pizza, then headed to school.  I’d brought cookies to share and put them on the community table.  We put our blankets down on the grass, but it was sooo hot!  Peyton wanted to check out the fire truck and playground structure, so we did that, while Brandon and Dave threw the football around.  Soon, Peyton got into the act, and wanted to throw, too.  Brandon was playing soccer with his friends, and Peyton tried to kick a few, but I saw a possible ER visit with that scenario, so we convinced her to throw some more.  However, that was a bit dicey, too, since Dave threw the ball and knocked her hat off!  Dave threw some to me, too, and luckily, NO ONE got hurt.  Peyton and I got dessert first, and Brandon declined initially, choosing to play instead.  Finally, as Dave walked away, he followed.  He brought back a jello cup with whipped cream.  Peyton had eaten her bag of chocolate cookies, which she’d shared with Brandon.  She whimpered, and he decided to share with her. Peyton was pretty interested in the fire truck. It was only later that other kids were going inside to sit.  I think she wanted to do that, too, but didn’t have the guts to ask.

Big Wheels

Dave bought Brandon a rolling backpack, but it didn’t arrive until last week.  I didn’t want him to take it last week because it wasn’t properly labelled.  As soon as Dave wheeled it into the house last week, Brandon noticed the wheels lit up.  Dave didn’t want to mention it because he didn’t want Brandon to play with the wheels.  When Dave set it down, Brandon went to read the description on the card attached to the bag.  He confirmed the wheels were supposed to light up and told Dave right away.  Dave tried to hide his surprise.  We told him he could take it on Tuesday.  He actually decided he didn’t want to take it because he was worried someone was going to ruin it. We told him he had to keep it nice until 5th grade, since his last backpack barely made it two years.  He was playing with the telescoping handle, and we told him that would break first if he continued to mess around with it.  He’s been careful all week, getting it in and out of my car, and rolling it instead of carrying as he’d tried to last week, defeating the purpose of the wheels.  It’s pretty heavy, even empty, but rolling it is okay.  It’s big enough for his lunch, water bottle, and a few books.  Today, I went to pick him up, and he said he’d rather go to CDC instead of hanging out with me, doing errands (Costco) and getting his sister.  They are working on a cardboard project, and he didn’t want to miss out.  So, now I’m back at home, then will get some food for our back to school picnic on the grass.  It’s weird having no kids on a Friday afternoon!
Here’s a pic he let me take before I rolled his backpack back to my car alone:

Advanced Planning

Today, we all went to Brandon’s flag salute. We walked a little way, just a few blocks, but still enough for Peyton to complain a little bit. She was better when she walked with Brandon, but dragged a bit on the way back. Brandon didn’t want us to stand near him, but did agree to hugs for both of us. After the assembly, we drove to Peyton’s school. She was happy, singing, but did tell me, “I’m going to cry.” It was so out of context to her current mood. Then, she said, “Just kidding. I won’t. But I’m going to.” I told her she didn’t need to cry, and that kindergarteners don’t cry. Especially since she never cries on any other day. She wondered what her friends would be doing, if they’d be out on the playground, and she knew it was “8 o’clock” so it was past breakfast. All normal. Then, we got to school. Still happy. She followed me into her classroom, put her share toy away, and then headed out to the playground. I wanted to tell Ms E that we’d found her jacket from yesterday, but Peyton told me to go alone. As I was walking back to say goodbye, she got up from her seated position on the ground, and bolted for the door. She ran through her classroom, ran out door number one, and was almost through door number two before I caught up to her. I kept giving her a chance to come back to me, but when I realized that might not happen, and she’d go to the car, I took off after her. I brought her back with all four limbs in different directions. Ms Barbara saw the struggle, and asked Peyton what was going on. She was crying by this time; I’m not even sure at what point the tears started, as I was concentrating on not dropping her. She was giggling when I picked her up initially, so somewhere in the hall. Ms Barbara took over, while I told her I’d come back later to get her.
It’s weird, she’s been crying more lately, for no good reason, when she can’t get her way. I’ve told her it doesn’t help, even though she may think otherwise. I reinforced with Brandon that kindergarteners don’t cry, but he chimed in that he did cry once in kinder. I asked him when, and he responded, “When I stapled my finger.” Uh, yeah, that’s different.

The teachers said yesterday she brought her baby picture in, but didn’t want to share it. The kids all thought it was cute that she had a baby picture, but she wasn’t having it. This morning we reviewed her share toy, where she got it, from whom she got it, and how she picked that color (purple). I told her kinders have to present in class, in front of the class. When we first entered the classroom, there were dictations up on the board from each of the kids. The question was, “What do you love?” Peyton’s response that was written down was, “I love my family.” I browsed the other answers, and they were all different. Some were “brother, sister, pet,” but the answers were a bit different. In the past, with Brandon’s classes, there were only one or two distinct answers to questions, but it seems this class has more independent thinkers. The teacher heard me talking about it, and said, “Yeah, sometimes she’s quiet, but other times, she will speak up and give an answer.”
