Even though the kids weren’t with us overnight, Dave still woke up at the crack of dawn. I tried to sleep in, but he was taking pictures of our view and our room in the morning. We started our morning off in search of breakfast. He thought he’d read somewhere that breakfast was included, but it was better for us to go explore. We walked to the public market, and Dave found a coffee place inside, then went to another stand for a breakfast taco. I was happy with two warm, freshly-made tortillas. In that time, my mom had texted that Brandon hadn’t been feeling well, and actually threw up! I called to check in, and she could tell something was wrong when he tried to go back to sleep after waking up and coming down to her room. Then, he disappeared, and she found him back in his room, again trying to go to sleep. I suggested to tank him up on Pedialyte and gave him bland foods for the day. I thought there was some GI bug floating around that I’d heard of. All three of us, my mom, Dave and me, all asked the same question – “What’d you eat?”
They were going to go back to my parents’ house eventually, as they would stay overnight as we made our way back home.
We walked back to the hotel to watch a bit of the basketball game, only to head out before halftime to do what we intended to do – wine-taste. I was the designated driver, and after the first winery, I took over. We went to Clos du Val, and I had fun shopping while Dave tasted. 
We then headed to another place, Chimney Rock winery. 
We made another stop at Silverado winery, and that’s where Dave made up for our lack of a Disney pass this year. He joined the club! And it’s subtly Disney, as the founder was Walt’s daughter, who recently passed away earlier this year. 
Then, we headed to get something to eat at Bouchon Bakery. The line was about 20-30 minutes long, but since it was sunny outside, it helped offset how cold it would have been otherwise. I got a quiche, while Dave got a pork belly sandwich for a late lunch. We shared some pastries before heading to the last winery. 
We did take a few home, too. Dave had sobered up a bit by now, and was able to do a last round. This last place, Trefethen, was the most crowded. 
Again, there were lots of things for me to look at, so it was nice to shop around. We finished up there just as it was closing, and then we drove over to change in the car for dinner. Dave didn’t think we’d need to change, but I thought it was better just in case. We headed to our 5 o’ clock reservation at Morimoto’s, and as soon as we walked into the door, we saw jeans. Dave was right! We were seated right away, and we were asking if the chef was at the restaurant. Dave used to work at the chef’s dad’s lab, and the two younger ones were the same age, so they would hang out at Christmas parties and such. The son was also in science, but later, quit grad school for a culinary pursuit. Dave was disappointed that he wasn’t able to see his old friend and catch up. But we did get an app on the house 
(hamachi tacos), in addition to the amuse-bouche, 
– lobster with pink lady apple and ikura, which was being served. Dave had the chef’s tasting menu, while I created my own meal of an appetizer, toro tartare 
with seaweed, wasabi, sour cream, chopped chives, guacamole, and tiny Japanese crackers (Dave’s came with a bit of caviar), abalone pot pie 
, and whole fried fish with papaya salad, and spicy tofu 
. The waiter told Dave that the bites were small, but Dave was so full about half-way through! We tried to take pictures of the food before our phones died. Dave was distracted with the people sitting next to us, who came in around course #3. They kept looking at him, making him feel self-conscious. I was able to ignore them, but I was distracted with Dave’s sideways looks at the couple. They were pretty young, and I did notice they were staring. They’d ordered the chef’s tasting menu, too, so I’m sure they were staring for that reason, to see what was up next for them. The tables were pretty close together, so it was hard not to be up in each other’s business. Here’s Dave’s second course: a kampachi tartare, with micro cilantro and yuzu 
, then his 3rd was olive oil fondue with mixed seasonal veggies (kale chips, carrot, onion, romanesco broccoli)

then the palette cleanser – a cucumber mint ice with sesame meringue and powdered olive oil (I didn’t get that taste, it was just powder-like)

– surf turf and turf. Surf was shrimp in angry sauce, pork belly waldorf salad, and American A-5 wagyu. I was still struggling with my fish, which had been deboned and then put back together such that you could eat the whole fish! I got through most of it, and the waiters were awaiting my tapping out of that before bringing on dessert – a coconut panna cotta, with mango sorbet, and at the bottom of the panna cotta, there were pop rocks! They were so loud, I could hear them popping in Dave’s mouth from across the table! 
The second and third desserts were an ice cream scoop (I think it was cookie dough!) for Dave’s birthday and a candle 
, and then the finale which was a branch representing that qualities of the Napa Valley. The waiter sprinkled some soy powder directly onto the table, then placed a gelee of some sort (we were so full, and out of battery on the phones, we didn’t remember what it was), and some fuji apple cotton candy, a caramel, and green tea sponge cake. Later, as they were cleaning up and removing the branch, I saw the small piece of transparency film that was placed below the branch, which was what was covering the table under the soy powder. At least I knew we weren’t eating off the table!

We checked with the staff again to see if Chef Kang had come in by now, but it turns out he wasn’t going to be in especially since he hadn’t arrived by now, 2.5 hours later when we first entered. Dave had emailed him the couple of weeks before, and he told Dave he’d be in and was looking forward to seeing him. We headed out, and prepared for our drive home. I had wanted to walk around a little bit, but the problem was it was too cold! We got home, and it was only a little after 9 pm. My parents were up and giving us the run-down about how the rest of the day went. I headed it with Peyton to sleep with her, since my mom told her if she fell asleep and didn’t get out, I would. Brandon was tucked in the guest room, so Dave took the couch in the family room. It was a whirlwind of a day, and thanks to my parents for watching the kids!
