Playdate

In the middle of the night, Peyton woke up and felt my face and head Helen Keller-style, since it was so dark in my old room.  I told her to lay down, and she went right back to sleep.  She was in the middle of the blow up bed, so I had to curl myself around her, so I didn’t fully awake her when I first got in.  She woke up this morning, and whispered, “Are my friends coming over to our house today?”  I nodded, and then she plopped back down until she said she had to go potty.  It was 815 am by the time I got up.  My mom had made eggs and waffles, so we ate a quick breakfast, then headed home.  My grandma wanted to know if we were all going out for Dave’s birthday, and come day-of, he agreed, so we left Brandon there much to his delight!  We headed home with Peyton to get ready for her friends to come over for a gingerbread-decorating party.  Dave and Peyton headed out to do some errands, while I vacuumed, and cleaned up here.  They came home after about an hour, and I sent her right to nap. It was noon, and the girls were to be over by 2pm.  I took a nap, too, and woke up by 145 pm. Peyton was still sound asleep, but I had to wake her up to let her get her grumpies out.  I stood in her room and just watched her sleep, and she didn’t look close to waking at all. I gave her a hug, and she slowly opened her eyes. As I suspected, she was a bit grumpy, but she worked it out, as I fixed her hair.  Neha and her mom showed up right at 2 pm.  Peyton snapped out of it, and both girls took off to Peyton’s room.  Later, Sydney and Natalie came over, and Dave let them in, as they didn’t ring the doorbell.  The three girls continued to play with puzzles, and Peyton’s kitchen.  Peyton wanted to turn the Christmas music on, as she LOVES the songs.  Dave had it going downstairs, too, so that’s definitely something they have in common.  Finally, Misha and Sona arrived, and the girls did a puzzle together before heading down to decorate.  Dave had warmed up some snacks for the girls, while I was getting the cookie decorating things ready.  He helped take pictures, while the girls decorated.  I had some coloring books, stickers, and other activities prepared, but the girls just wanted to color.  Then, they headed back to Peyton’s room, and then Peyton looked a bit stressed.  I asked her what’s wrong, and she was worried they were going to make her room messy.  I told her that she just needed to tell them to put her toys back where they found them.  I tried to help out, too, so there wouldn’t be a total mess when they left.  We had also had the twistable crayons all splayed out, and the moms asked if we usual put the crayons back each time. I told them we did, and usually Peyton doesn’t take them all out at once.  She’s pretty anal, and was hovering around her room, trying to monitor everything.  The adults were downstairs, and the girls were slowly migrating with toys downstairs.  Peyton kept telling them to keep it upstairs, so I’d go back and bring stuff back upstairs.  Pretty soon, Misha had to leave, then Neha, and then Sydney.  I think they all had fun, and eventually, Peyton loosened up a bit and just enjoyed herself.  Here are the pictures Dave took.

We headed up to get Brandon, (Sydney was the only girl who asked about Brandon, as she knows him the best from the field trip, when they sat next to each other) as my mom and dad were meeting us there with him.  My grandma, aunt and uncle also met up there, too.  We had a nice warm, Chinese dinner, and then we headed back to my parents’ house for some cake.  My mom told Dave, “If you don’t like the cake, Brandon picked it out.”  We asked what it was, and he told us, “It’s coconut. And chocolate.”  My mom shook her head at the chocolate part, as it was coconut cream.  It looked like a big Hostess snowball.  Dave was able to blow out the 5 candles (4 – one for each decade of life, and then one to grow on), but then they re-lit.  My mom had gotten re-lighting/trick candles, and it didn’t take Dave long to figure it out.  The kids were loving it!  And they tried to help out, too, but they kept re-lighting.  We packed up and left by then, as it was late for them.  We got them home by 8 pm, and whisked off to bed. Brandon was already showered thanks to my mom, and then I got Peyton bathed.  Neither kid came out, as I think both had a long weekend!

Best line of the night, as my grandma’s handing Dave his present, she says, “Here’s to the YOUNG man!”

Birthday Boy’s Weekend

Even though the kids weren’t with us overnight, Dave still woke up at the crack of dawn. I tried to sleep in, but he was taking pictures of our view and our room in the morning. We started our morning off in search of breakfast. He thought he’d read somewhere that breakfast was included, but it was better for us to go explore. We walked to the public market, and Dave found a coffee place inside, then went to another stand for a breakfast taco. I was happy with two warm, freshly-made tortillas. In that time, my mom had texted that Brandon hadn’t been feeling well, and actually threw up! I called to check in, and she could tell something was wrong when he tried to go back to sleep after waking up and coming down to her room. Then, he disappeared, and she found him back in his room, again trying to go to sleep. I suggested to tank him up on Pedialyte and gave him bland foods for the day. I thought there was some GI bug floating around that I’d heard of. All three of us, my mom, Dave and me, all asked the same question – “What’d you eat?”
They were going to go back to my parents’ house eventually, as they would stay overnight as we made our way back home.
We walked back to the hotel to watch a bit of the basketball game, only to head out before halftime to do what we intended to do – wine-taste. I was the designated driver, and after the first winery, I took over. We went to Clos du Val, and I had fun shopping while Dave tasted.  We then headed to another place, Chimney Rock winery.  We made another stop at Silverado winery, and that’s where Dave made up for our lack of a Disney pass this year. He joined the club! And it’s subtly Disney, as the founder was Walt’s daughter, who recently passed away earlier this year.  Then, we headed to get something to eat at Bouchon Bakery. The line was about 20-30 minutes long, but since it was sunny outside, it helped offset how cold it would have been otherwise. I got a quiche, while Dave got a pork belly sandwich for a late lunch. We shared some pastries before heading to the last winery.  We did take a few home, too.   Dave had sobered up a bit by now, and was able to do a last round. This last place, Trefethen, was the most crowded. Again, there were lots of things for me to look at, so it was nice to shop around. We finished up there just as it was closing, and then we drove over to change in the car for dinner. Dave didn’t think we’d need to change, but I thought it was better just in case. We headed to our 5 o’ clock reservation at Morimoto’s, and as soon as we walked into the door, we saw jeans. Dave was right! We were seated right away, and we were asking if the chef was at the restaurant. Dave used to work at the chef’s dad’s lab, and the two younger ones were the same age, so they would hang out at Christmas parties and such. The son was also in science, but later, quit grad school for a culinary pursuit. Dave was disappointed that he wasn’t able to see his old friend and catch up. But we did get an app on the house   (hamachi tacos), in addition to the amuse-bouche,  – lobster with pink lady apple and ikura, which was being served. Dave had the chef’s tasting menu, while I created my own meal of an appetizer, toro tartare with seaweed, wasabi, sour cream, chopped chives, guacamole, and tiny Japanese crackers (Dave’s came with a bit of caviar), abalone pot pie  , and whole fried fish with papaya salad, and spicy tofu . The waiter told Dave that the bites were small, but Dave was so full about half-way through! We tried to take pictures of the food before our phones died. Dave was distracted with the people sitting next to us, who came in around course #3. They kept looking at him, making him feel self-conscious. I was able to ignore them, but I was distracted with Dave’s sideways looks at the couple. They were pretty young, and I did notice they were staring. They’d ordered the chef’s tasting menu, too, so I’m sure they were staring for that reason, to see what was up next for them. The tables were pretty close together, so it was hard not to be up in each other’s business.  Here’s Dave’s second course: a kampachi tartare, with micro cilantro and yuzu , then his 3rd was olive oil fondue with mixed seasonal veggies (kale chips, carrot, onion, romanesco broccoli) , then chawan mushi with lobster knuckles then the palette cleanser – a cucumber mint ice with sesame meringue and powdered olive oil (I didn’t get that taste, it was just powder-like), then for Dave’s proteins: , then – surf turf and turf.  Surf was shrimp in angry sauce, pork belly waldorf salad, and American A-5 wagyu.  I was still struggling with my fish, which had been deboned and then put back together such that you could eat the whole fish!  I got through most of it, and the waiters were awaiting my tapping out of that before bringing on dessert – a coconut panna cotta, with mango sorbet, and at the bottom of the panna cotta, there were pop rocks!  They were so loud, I could hear them popping in Dave’s mouth from across the table!  The second and third desserts were an ice cream scoop (I think it was cookie dough!) for Dave’s birthday and a candle , and then the finale which was a branch representing that qualities of the Napa Valley.  The waiter sprinkled some soy powder directly onto the table, then placed a gelee of some sort (we were so full, and out of battery on the phones, we didn’t remember what it was), and some fuji apple cotton candy, a caramel, and green tea sponge cake.  Later, as they were cleaning up and removing the branch, I saw the small piece of transparency film that was placed below the branch, which was what was covering the table under the soy powder.  At least I knew we weren’t eating off the table!

We checked with the staff again to see if Chef Kang had come in by now, but it turns out he wasn’t going to be in especially since he hadn’t arrived by now, 2.5 hours later when we first entered.  Dave had emailed him the couple of weeks before, and he told Dave he’d be in and was looking forward to seeing him.  We headed out, and prepared for our drive home.  I had wanted to walk around a little bit, but the problem was it was too cold!  We got home, and it was only a little after 9 pm. My parents were up and giving us the run-down about how the rest of the day went.  I headed it with Peyton to sleep with her, since my mom told her if she fell asleep and didn’t get out, I would.  Brandon was tucked in the guest room, so Dave took the couch in the family room.  It was a whirlwind of a day, and thanks to my parents for watching the kids!

HR skills; Old Ladies

Awhile back, when we went to my dad’s office, Brandon went into the conference room and sat down at the head of the table. He looked to the empty chairs and started to tell each one, “You’re fired! You’re fired! You’re fired!” He doesn’t watch the Apprentice, but maybe he’s seen the commercials. In any case, I hope he doesn’t end up in HR else the unemployment rates will surge!
My mom brought home two articles in the newspaper for Brandon to read. He started to read one, then Peyton grabbed the other. DDS, Winter Sing, Nutcracker

This morning was a rush to get Brandon to school.  Peyton was sluggish from a late night and wasn’t that cooperative.  Brandon was easy and ate breakfast pn his own. Dave left early since he had to come back early for Peyton’s performance.  We got Brandon to school right as the bell had rung, which is our latest yet! We stayed for the assembly though it was super cold. Brandon wasn’t of course, but he was wearing an extra layer per his request.  Peyton was easy at drop off. The kids were still inside the classroom.  I headed to work for a few hours.  Then left to get Brandon from school. We headed to the dentist.  He had some xrays but I was filling in paperwork so no photos there.  He did well because he was watching Turbo the whole time.  After being told he had no cavities,  I reminded him he had to replace Peyton’s tiara that he broke.  The dental assistant told him to pick two things!  He was in luck!  He picked a parachute man for himself and find a pink tiara for Peyton.  He wanted me to take him back to CDC because there was an auction they were having to spend the money they earn there.  There was a set of Pokemon cards up for auction. He had $47 to spend, but his friend, who also wanted them,  had $48. I told him how auctions work.  I offered to get him a set of cards if he hung out with me and didn’t cause problems.  He reluctantly agreed.  It helped my mom was already at school when we got there.  Curren, Orion’s brother, was there, too, and had an ipad. My mom went to go get hers and, both boys were set. Brandon’s got a pretty good grasp of time. He asked me when the performance started.  And I told him what time it was, and he said,  “What? That’s like an hour!” Luckily the principal let us in early since it was cold outside.  I’d had a blanket in case, but Brandon just sat on it because of course he’s not cold. We enjoyed the performance,  with Dave’s arrival 10 minutes to show time.  He and Sydney’s dad were trying to plan it tightly to make the most of their work days. After the performance,  we headed to eat ramen. Perfect for the cold day. Then Peyton and I headed up to the Nutcracker performance.  This is the same ballet company we saw last year with Mckayla, but this year we were coming to SEE  Mckayla! We beat the Kao’s there, but they arrived a few minutes later. Marcus and Peyton didn’t want to sit next to each other and were both being shy. Peyton was fidgety while the lights were on, but as soon as they went out, she sat nicely in her seat.  In fact,  when I tried to talk to her, she was kind of annoyed at me!! At intermission, I whisked her to the potty again. We had gone before the show started, but Mckayla was in the second half, and I didn’t want to leave. Michelle told me Mckayla was telling her how Peyton can do it next year. I had a hard time spotting Mckayla because all the girls had tight buns in their hair,  but I did see her smile.  I told Peyton what Mckayla had suggested about her doing it next year,  and Peyton shushed me!! She put her finger to her lips and said, “Shhhh!”  I think she would really like it! I reminded her that Mckayla had to practice a lot, but it paid off because she did a great job!  After the show,  Peyton was happy to give Mckayla the flowers we brought for her. She’d gotten her own after her performance, but I have it to her in the car to not embarrass her.  Her face lit up as did Mckayla’s. Unfortunately,  she tried to give Peyton a hug, but Peyton kept backing up. She is averse to touching others besides family. She refused to hold hands at the end of the performance for their finale and bow.  She’s just like the character, Sheldon!
After we got home,  I packed up to head out of town to celebrate Dave’s birthday, while Peyton changed and went to bed. Brandon was already asleep. I told him he could stay up until 9 but Dave got him down by 815 pm with only a slight complaint.  Then, he was out. My mom said she didn’t hear another word. We headed out in the rain,  but still made good time!  1.5 hours.  We’ll go wine-tasting tomorrow then an early dinner.

Bethlehem!

Both of us brought a kid home and started the bedtime routine right away. We got them to take their baths. Brandon and Dave got a head start. We left the house to get dinner first, then headed over to the church. Just like last year, it was all decked out to replicate the old city. Based on our experience last year, we started out in the city, then headed to the back, bypassing the main show to find a good seat for the next show. We did stop for a pinch of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Brandon was excited about the prospect of getting gold. We plopped down on the bench and drank the hot cocoa that we got on the way in. There were 3 songs, and Peyton was so into them! She didn’t sing like the guy behind us who was humming out of tune (Dave thinks those who are tone-deaf shouldn’t bother to sing). But really, the guy was ruining our experience. When the performance finished up, we headed back to the car for warmth. We passed by the camel again on our way out. It was nice to get into the nice, warm car. Teeth were brushed, and then Brandon and I started to read. It was a later night than usual, so hopefully they both do well tomorrow, since Peyton has her performance!

Left Behind

Awhile back, my mom was telling Brandon how she left one of my friends behind in a restaurant one time, when she was responsible for her.  She didn’t bring her, but she was supposed to bring her home.  We didn’t get very far before my mom figured it out, and I think we were about Brandon’s age.  So, Michelle and I were talking before about the kids’ club and having the kids feel comfortable being left behind.  Last summer, Brandon Therefore get on your prescription levitra guard and proceed solely once you get a inexperienced signal from the doctor. Believe

Peyton asked me today, “I know you and Daddy move the elf around.” I asked her how she knew that (hoping she didn’t see me!). She said, “Well, how else does he get from place to place?” Brandon wasn’t around, so it was an easier conversation. I told her that the elf goes back to Santa each night, and then finds his own place to sit to come back. She didn’t say anymore, so I assumed she agreed. It’s totally different with Brandon. He came down this morning for breakfast, saw the Elf sitting on the shelf where my keys were. I poured him milk for his cereal, then told him to eat his breakfast nicely since the Elf was watching him. He nodded, put his head down, and started to eat.
