Last night, I gave Brandon a choice of staying home with me or going to CDC. At first, he told me he wanted to go to CDC, but when I told him I wanted to go on a scooter/run like we did over the summer, then follow it up with a donut run. He agreed! This morning, he changed his mind. He was adamant. When I asked him why he felt that way, he told me that he was afraid I’d leave him on the trail. I assured him I would not, and he changed his mind again, wanting to go. We dropped Peyton off before the end of breakfast, then we headed to my work site to park. We went on the trail, and just like last year, he started off shaky. I kept having to slow down and wait for him, since he was behind me. After a mile or so in, he had the hang of it again, and he lead most of the way. I kept counting down to Brandon, as I’d wanted to go about 4.5 miles in, then turn around and do the rest of the 10 miles closer to the car. I ran with my Camelback, and another water for Brandon, but he ended up drinking from the fountain. We made good time for the first half, as I was trying to beat our time last year. We went farther than last year, and he had NO complaints at all. He kept scootering, and I didn’t have to warn him as much of the rules of the road. At one point, he was out of sight! I was hoping he knew where to go, but good thing he has Dave’s sense of direction. He fell about 3 times, and one was without me even seeing him. He said someone asked if he was okay, and he said, “Yes,” and then got back up and kept going. I asked him how he fell on that one, and he said he was going under the tunnel, and he was afraid of running into something since it was dark. I was afraid of running into vagrants, since apparently there are some resident ones per yelp. There were plenty of “normal” people, and I didn’t see any un-natural wildlife (I did see a turtle!). He did get unnecessarily yelled at by some grumpy old guy. I wasn’t sure if he was being yelled at or encouraged, but the guy’s face didn’t look happy. Brandon was passing a pedestrian while a cyclist was coming up. Brandon was still to the right of the yellow line, and as I ran up, while he was walking uphill, I asked if he got yelled at. The woman Brandon passed said, “Yes, he did.” I told Brandon he was doing okay, and the guy had no reason to yell at him. He didn’t care anyways. I think it bothered me more than it did him.
We made it back as it was getting warm. Brandon was tired, so I had him sit on a bench, while I finished up a half mile, running back and forth around him. We even ran by Victor, though Brandon scooted and had no clue. I was thinking maybe Victor didn’t know who I was out of context either.
After we finished up, I was giving Brandon a choice of going out for breakfast or getting the donuts close by work. He chose the latter, which was the original plan. I told him the donuts that were bigger than his face, he could only eat half of, while he could eat a whole, normal sized one. He ended up picking a chocolate donut with powdered sugar. Totally simple! None of the ones that were cereal-crusted, jelly filled, etc etc were appealing to him, or he didn’t want to cut in half. I was going to ask him to wait to eat it at home, but that was impossible. I wanted to head over to the other work site to get his height and weight, and then Costco to get my fruit for tomorrow’s Easter party at my aunt’s house. He enjoyed his donut in the car, but when he asked me to roll up the window, I was a bit worried. He told me that the wind blew all the sugar around. Oops. We got to KP, and after 10 minutes, we got his height and weight. Brandon is now 60# and 53.5 inches. We then headed over to Costco, and we got in and out and on our way back home to dump off the groceries before heading out again. I didn’t shower up because I was on borrowed time – the kid was hungry. I gave him a snack, but with his monster appetite, it wasn’t going to last long. He said he wanted to go to Gott’s, but I warned him there may be a line. He was okay with that. I didn’t even bother with a kids’ size burger anymore, opting for the full-sized cheeseburger, minus the “special sauce”. Hey, I tried. I got the ahi burger, and took off the bun, so I could eat the sweet potato fries, which I ended up giving him half of. We waited about 15 minutes for our food, but we were indoors and cool, and enjoying our water with lemon wedge. We then walked around the shopping center, and I took him in for ice cream. It was more for me, and I gave him the choice of ginger or sorbet. He chose ginger. Finally, I took him into a sports clothing shop that I’ve been meaning to go into, but it has been closed the other times we’ve been in the area. He sat near the dressing room, while I shopped. He was completely content, and the salespeople were friendly to him, too! I tried a few things on, then ended up with a new bathing suit 🙂 Hard to find, so I’m glad to have gotten a new one. We then left to get a smoked turkey from the place that normally sells ham. We’re already getting ham from my mom, and I’d requested the smoked turkey from Dave yesterday, but he brought home the oven-roasted. The breasts are smaller, so it wouldn’t hurt to have two differently prepared ones on Sunday, with my mom’s side of the family. Plus, if we have leftovers, I can pack them for Brandon’s lunch, since those start again as of Monday. We then headed home, and I told him he could play, but I realized we didn’t have that much time. He went potty, and then basically, it was time to leave again. I got in a quick vacuum downstairs and up the stairs, and even then, I was pushing it. He was calling out time checks to me periodically, and finally, I wrapped up by a quarter to 4. Brandon was instructed to change his clothes to the swim stuff, and then we headed out to get Peyton. We picked her up, but Brandon didn’t want to come all the way in because he was in a swim suit. I didn’t want to leave him in the car, since it was too warm, so he sat outside on the bench outside of the school. I got Peyton, who was at the snack table. She came with me, and we headed to swim. Dave called in the meantime, and he was headed home, so I asked him to meet me at the pool. The kids did okay in the pool, but Peyton seems to be having problems listening to her coaches. They both dove into the deep end, then made their way back to the shallow end. After class, I took them home to change, while Dave went on a sports errand. He found a glove for Brandon for $29, originally priced at $149. He said buying stuff for lefties is so great! He just got home, and the kids are almost done with dinner. Seriously, after 7 pm, beer me. Okay, so it’s hard apple cider, but this time, I’m not sharing.
