Tourney Day

Today was Brandon’s first U-8 (8 and under) baseball tournament game.  Dave had to work the snack shack, but he was able to see most of the game.  Peyton and I were in the stands, and she was mostly kept company with the ipad, but she ran between Dave and me as well.  It was an exciting game, with both teams exchanging hits back and forth during the innings.  Brandon’s at bats ended in two outs, but he did get a runner to advance as well as an RBI, so it wasn’t all for naught.  He wasn’t hitting as strongly as he normally does, but he was third up, which is little league equivalent to clean up.  The level of players was higher, and even though it’s a voluntary gig, it’s playing out like All Stars.  That’s what they are calling this, as the other teams actually had try-outs.  Our team is mostly the Coach’s kids.  We had another former teammate’s dad told us that his son didn’t make the team, though he was requested to try out.  Our team was the home team, and by the 6th inning, we were up about 7 runs.  Typically there are only 5 runs allowed per inning, but since it was the last inning, there were “unlimited” runs.  Unfortunately, the team took advantage of this, and they ran up the score!  They ended up 3 runs ahead, and it was back to our team to score.  We weren’t able to hang in there, but Brandon did make a few plays at first base, where he played for most of the game. .  The team was playing another game at 2pm, but Peyton’s only usually good for one game, so we were going to go swim.  We did see my OB, whose kid is on the opposing team.  She wanted to know which player Brandon was (she knows his name, but hasn’t seen his face since the last ultrasound she took).  I pointed to him, and she said, “You know, I took care of you when you were in there?”  He had NO idea what she was talking about!  We then headed to the Kao’s. I had the GPS on, since I still don’t know turn by turn, and Peyton called me out on it.  She said, “How come Daddy knows how to get there, but you don’t know?” I told her I still don’t know, and that I get lost easily.

Marcus and Ted were there, while Mckayla and Michelle were still in Chinese school. It was good that we were there early, as Peyton sat with Marcus working on a book, while I chatted with Ted.  Soon, the Brown’s arrived.  Mckayla came home shortly after, and then play started!  The kids were playing in the backyard, while the adults sat down to eat first.  Ted had made sausages, chicken, and broccoli, and the kids were told swimming would start after food was done.  We heard talking at the kids’ table, but Peyton came over first, stating she was done.  She loves chicken drumsticks and broccoli, so the meal was right up her alley.  “Kudos to the chef” is what being done first means for Peyton. Otherwise, the motto is “More eating, less talking,” which we have to repeat over and over when there’s food she is not as interested in.  But given her recent history of puking, I told her to take it easy.  In fact, after lunch, she must have had food coma.  She was content to hang out with me in my chair, looking like she was falling asleep.  She’d woken up before Brandon today!  Finally, everyone was done, and Mckayla had asked to change her clothes.  Peyton then got excited to change. I’d brought her Tinkerbell swimsuit, and she was excited to change into it!  We went to change, and I had to slow her down and put her sunblock on.  She agreed, even though the Kao’s were already in the water.  She got in, and she had a blast!  She did some flips, both front and back, and then some switches from front to back floats/glides.  She also went diving for toys, and then squirted water guns.  She had a great time looking at the “Sea Creatures (Ted and Stuart, swimming at the bottom of the pool)”.  She thought Stuart looked like a shark!  Peyton played with Connor, trying to get him to put his face in the water (he did for a second), while she looked up at him from underneath the water.  She had fun trying to shoot Logan with the water cannon.  Dave bought us some pool noodles, so we brought those to share.  We stayed in the water for over an hour!  The kids didn’t want to get out, but the prospect of dessert lured them.  We showered up, and then headed out again.  The kids sat down for ice cream cone s’mores.  Peyton declared she was done when she was down to the tip.  She didn’t want to “over do” it.  I also warned her that there would be dessert at the birthday party.  The adults shared some of Bonnie’s homemade chocolate pie!  The kids moved inside, and with the lack of naps, the mood was a bit touch and go for Peyton.  She mostly kept it together, and was playing cards with Marcus.  They played well with Jenga at one point, too, but later, pieces were all over the place.    She and Mckayla played Bananagrams, and I was very curious what words they were spelling out, but I was too lazy to get up and look 🙂 Finally, after all the fun, we had to leave to go to Advay’s birthday party.  We were already late, but since it was at PIU, I wasn’t in that big of a hurry to get there. Sometimes the party can go long, especially when Peyton has her moments.  Knowing she didn’t nap, it was a real issue.  We said goodbye and thank you to the Kao’s (well, Peyton gave Ted a high five).  She was talking to me all the way down the hill, then it got quiet.  I thought she was sleeping, and I pushed my fitness bracelet to see my status, and I heard from the backseat, “Did ya get enough yet?”  I answered her quickly (no), and then stopped talking.  The next light, I turned around, and then saw this:

The song right before we got to PIU was “All the Single Ladies”, and Peyton suddenly woke up, and said, “Oh, I thought I heard my favorite song!”  I warned her it was time to go, and she got moving when I stopped the car. I was expecting her to drag out of the car, but she sprung to life!  We happily went into the party, and she immediately ran off, yelling “Connor!  SYDNEY!!!”    She surprised me!  She didn’t look back.  She did come check in with me periodically, but otherwise, the party was all her school friends. I was saddened that this would come to an end soon, and she’d have to start all over again.  Advay’s mom come over to say hello, and she told me 25 out of 30 kids were in attendance.  These kids have been around for the past 3 years, and they’d be moving on, but they’re all so comfortable with one another!  We moved to the next room, and the parents were all talking.  Then, Sydney was crying, and Peyton was on top of her.  I called to Sydney to come out, and then Peyton followed her.  She was calm, but when she came out, she started crying, too. I tried to tell her she wasn’t in trouble, but I wanted to find out why Sydney was crying.  She told me she was pushed into Sydney.  She lost it and couldn’t stop crying.  The staff member came up to the girls to offer ice packs.  Suddenly that made them feel better.  Soon, dinner time was called.  It was amazing how all the kids lined up, and did what was asked of them.  I was sharing my amazement with Neha’s dad and thanking school for getting these kids to where they are.  This party, with the exception of the owie, was a breeze, in that the kids followed directions, and took turns.  They responded well to the staff members, and were all good listeners.

We sung to Advay first, then pizza was all ready for the kids.  They filed in and started eating. I got Peyton some water and fruit, and she ate only one slice of pizza.  She had a piece of cake, and then we said goodbye.  She selected a library book as a party favor (SWEET!) and then we headed home.  I gave her another bath, since she’d been rolling around at PIU.  She had turned colors from being in the sun.  At the Kao’s, she told me, “I’m like an Indian!”  I told her that she is still Chinese.  She said, “Why? But I want to be Indian! I like Indians!”  But she won’t eat Indian food…!  We had such a fun day, and Peyton really surprised me.  She was asleep within 5 minutes, which was NOT a surprise to me.  Brandon didn’t stay up too much longer than that.   Yay for two more days of weekend!  I need it.
