Today, Brandon had his second tournament for the summer. This is the official U8, so the kids all had to be 8 and under. They were playing at a different host tournament, and Brandon’s first game was at 1030 am. They left by 9 am to go warm-up, while Peyton and I did errands around the house. I vacuumed while she colored. Then, we went to go get fruit for the party we were attending later in the day. While we were headed to the game, I called my dad to invite him to the game. I should’ve done it earlier, but I didn’t have a free time to do so until I headed to the game. We were about 10 minutes out, so I wasn’t giving him much time since he was at home watching soccer. He was going to see my grandma, but he decided to head south to us instead. He asked me to text him, but since I was driving, I passed the phone to Peyton at a red light. I gave her the address, one number at a time, then spelled out the street. It was a Spanish word and article, so I had to spell it out, too. She knew the city name (where her school is), and after she’d done it all, I told her to press the “triangle pointing to the right.” She said, “Okay, did it.” I asked her if there was a single check, and she said, “Yep!” I didn’t check again until I got to the park, but she’d done it right! So glad the kids are proving of use nowadays. The game was a bit rough, with the other team racking up hit after hit. They were losing so bad, the coach just shook his head and said nothing. We took a break for lunch, and fed Brandon a lot of it! Peyton had some snacks – blueberries and green beans – at the game. I ended up downloading a map app for her to learn more of the states before I’d left home. She only had access to 2 states, since it was the “lite” version, but since she was having a good time, my dad tethered wifi for me to download the rest of the app. It kept her busy until the battery on the ipad ran out (boo). She was content to watch the game by then. We still had an hour to go before the next game, so we went shopping for shoes for the kids, as well as a coffee run for Dave and my dad. We got back to the field, and my dad warmed Brandon up. Peyton discovered a play structure on the other side of the park, where she went to play. She was wearing sandals, so it wasn’t helping her grip, but I played around with her until the game started. Brandon’s team did better, but Brandon made a running error (he didn’t listen to the base coach and stopped instead of run), and he got lit up by the coaches. Dave was in the dugout managing the kids, but he bristled a bit. I muttered to my dad that Brandon deserved it, as he cost the team a run. (He eventually scored with the next batter.) Brandon kept it together, but Dave didn’t think it was cool. Brandon was threatened with not playing if he ever did it again. I just think it’s the drill sargent mentality to try to get the kids better, by making a point. He was pulling kids out who weren’t listening, and replacing them with bench players when on the field. Luckily, Brandon passed that test, only because he was wearing sunglasses 🙂 Good thing he can shake it off. The coach later asked if Brandon was coming back Sunday. Brandon told him yes, and the coach smiled and said, “Just listen to the coaches, k?” Later, I asked him if he wanted to cry. He said, “Yes but I held it in.” Dave and I were calmer with him about it, and explained to him the coach’s mentality. They ended up winning by 12 runs, so at least the game ended on a good note. Hopefully Brandon has a better play tomorrow. He’ll be up by 8 am to get to the batting cages. He wanted Dave to wake him up to take him there and was concerned. After baseball, we both headed home to quickly change, then head over to see the Bryan’s who are in town for the weekend. They have baby MJ, and we played with her a bit. She has more stranger anxiety now, but I did get to hold her for a few minutes. I had Peyton’s eyes on me the entire time, and when I gave the baby back, Peyton jumped up into my arms, marking her territory. She’s so funny like that! Brandon could care less that I was holding anyone. He was happy watching the baseball game that was on. Later, when he got antsy, Dave took him out for some batting practice. Peyton had her rainbow looms, and she was happy by herself with that. We didn’t end up leaving until 8 pm, and then we started the going to bed process. Both kids were exhausted, but Peyton asked me if we were going to practice piano. She is totally into it! I told her we’d do it tomorrow. I’ll work with her in the morning, while Dave goes out with Brandon. No pictures from today, since we were so busy watching the games to take pictures.
It is amazing how much he is learning, but hopefully we just remind him that he’s doing well, and that no matter what he hears, everyone wants him to do well. We are looking forward to baseball camp. Nathan, one of his teammates from the Dodgers and this all-star team, is going to be there, too, so I’m sure they’ll have fun together as long as they stay together. They are pretty much the same ability, so hopefully they get to stay together, as long as they don’t screw around together.
