Today was Brandon’s second visit to the dentist. It started out quickly, as the hygenist brought him back without much of a wait. Last time I got there too early and ended up waiting around too long, which is bad with a squirmy little kid. She sat us both in the chair and asked me if she should keep going if he cried. I told her it was fine (apparently there must be some parents who ask them to stop if their kid cries?) – I could have given her a 100% guarantee that he would cry, so no need to stop the process for a little crying. She tried to alleviate his fear by showing him the brush, letting him feel it on his hand, telling him it wouldn’t hurt, all the usual things I’m sure they do to calm the kids down. Really, it was all just fluff, it wasn’t going to make a difference. The chair was out in the open with other chairs and other kids. As soon as she started, he cried. And cried and cried and cried. Nothing different than when we brush his teeth at home. They even told me to wrap my legs around his so that he wouldn’t squirm as much. He cried so much she stopped the cleaning and moved us to a sound-proof room so as not to bother the other kids in the room. He said, “All done?” and we both told him, “Nice try.” After we were in the sound-proof room, she told him, “Now, you can cry all you want”. They had “Cars” projecting up on the screens above the chairs, but it didn’t make much of a difference to him. She finished her cleaning, then stepped out to get some fluoride for a fluoride treatment. He calmed down, realized that “Cars” was on and started watching. “Cars!” he said. I told him if he wasn’t so busy crying, he could’ve been watching it. As soon as she came back with the fluoride foam, he turned around and saw her and started crying again. Full on crying, not even just a whimper. He knew she was going to do something to him! But it was harmless, just a little foam, he wouldn’t even let her use the water squirter into his mouth, so she just wiped it off with some These supplements can bring the intended benefits without causing cialis viagra any side effects. I’m sure she was just trying to help, but it shouldn’t be by rewarding him with candy, especially since he’s never had it before. Plus, he only knows, “candy – no, no, no.” Anyways, she was all done, she gave him a balloon, toothbrush and stickers. He then warmed up to her and told her about the fire truck and the “wooo-wooo-wooo” sound that a fire truck makes. but then there was the actual dental exam. The dentist came in and put gloves on and told Brandon they were “teeth-counting gloves”. He counted Brandon’s two ears, one nose, and showed him they didn’t hurt. Brandon was not convinced, he kept giving the dentist the “evil Kenny eye”, that leer that he had only previously reserved for Uncle Kenny. Then again, as soon as his teeth were being touched, he cried. After it was all over, Dr Fridgen reviewed some things with me, and then Brandon was truly all done. I was concerned because Brandon has some yellowing in his teeth sometimes, but then it goes away mostly when we brush. That’s why we fight him to brush, even though he’s kicking and screaming. It’s easier now every day than having to deal with cavities. The dentist said to just keep up brushing and flossing (which he doesn’t mind as much because it tastes like mint). It’s ok to use a toothbrush or the washcloth which I find works better in that he doesn’t cry (as much).
After the dentist left, the hygenist told us we could go pick out a toy and then make a follow up appointment. I picked up an airplane, thinking he’d like it, made the follow up and left. No sooner does he get in the car, he’s out! Well, yeah, after so much crying, he wore himself out. He fell asleep with the airplane in his hand. I brought him upstairs, laid him down and then he woke up. He started crying again and muttering something that sounded like, “Ah-pane, waaahhh…air-pane” – what, you remembered? I had stuffed it my bag, which I was still carrying, so I pulled it out and gave it to him. So no afternoon nap, but maybe that means he’ll fall asleep on the plane tonight on our flight to Ontario (CA). There’s always hope.
Flossing is more critical at this point so if he doesn’t mind that then you’re lucky.
After hearing your story, I’m going to start brushing Katie’s gums tonight so she’s used to it.
As soon as we he got his first tooth out, we used a washcloth to rub his gums, then graduated to a rubber toothbrush thing that fits over your finger, which he started to bite down on, and then the toothbrush. Hopefully Katie will not mind as much as Brandon!
