Art Morning

This morning I took the kids to school to do Peyton’s art class. I was an art helper but the other mom tried to put me on the spot to ask if I wanted to lead the show. She said she’d forgotten how to do the art part and had only studied the lesson part. I’d helped with Brandon’s class last month for the same project but I still wasn’t prepared to do the lesson alone! Another mom have her the run-down and she felt confident again to do the lesson. We helped put the supplies out and when we were done I had a chance to look at the kids’ art from last week. Hanging up was the art from a simple black dot. The dot represents what people focus on, the negative. But people miss the other 80% of the white space or the positive. The task was to create something with the black dot, incorporate it into their picture. Here’s what they did:

I didn’t get any pictures from today’s project since we were busy helping. It was a portrait session, drawing their teacher like da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, while listening to Beethoven. Peyton was fairly quiet, working hard on her project. After an hour, we were done and the kids headed off to recess. I headed off to work for an hour. I’d told Peyton I’d miss out on lunch but hoped to get back during recess. I worked fast but didn’t get back in time. I did go back to school right as they were lining up. Peyton saw me and came over to the fence. I looked like a creepy lady talking to a little girl through the school’s fence. I stayed long enough to ask her what color her card was (green) and encourage her to keep it that way for 45 more minutes. I went home and ate lunch then returned to pick her up. She happily showed me her 45/45 stars for today. She made it a whole week on green or blue!! She knew her reward would be Mommy and me time. Instead of practicing piano, we made headbands! I told her we only had 50 minutes as we had to pick Brandon up from chess club. She did two and was all done. We cleaned up then headed back to school for Brandon. She made a purple one (no surprise) but also an orange one! (Giants??). Here’s her pictures with the purple one:

Dave stayed for happy hour at work. I got the pleasure of both kids this afternoon. We went back to my work for food I’d left earlier in the week. Then we came home and practiced piano. I got them all done before 5 pm to watch the game. They did their own thing while I watched. Later they watched jeopardy at 7. The seventh inning was just wrapping up. I told Brandon he could watch the rest of this inning before going to bed. He said, “Go Giants!!” He knows enough about baseball to know that the Giants were the bottom of the inning. Funny kid. That’s the way I can get him to root for the Giants. Peyton’s such a non Giants fan, she read a book while we watched.
